Maryland won its 23rd consecutive match, despite the absence of All-American attacker Karri Ellen Johnson, who was out with a concussion for the second straight game. Schwarzmann and Merrifield picked up the slack offensively, totaling eight goals on 14 shots. On the whole, the Terrapin attack was extremely efficient, posting a.480 shot percentage against a Carolina defense that was giving up a mere 7.83 goals per game. With two assists on the day, Mollison extended her streak to 58 straight games with a point and moved into sole possession of third on Maryland s career assists list with 112. Jones tallied a team-high four draw controls, Sanza registered a career-high four caused turnovers and Dipper posted seven saves in the cage to lead the Terps, who moved to 47-1 in College Park in the Cathy Reese-era. The Terps are giving up an average of 6.46 goals per game in 2011 including holding No. 16 Penn State and George Mason to two goals - a feat not done by Maryland since NATIONALLY SPEAKING... The two-time IWLCA All-American is currently ranked fourth all-time in career goals at Maryland with 177. Mollison boasts a string of 58 consecutive games with either an assist or a goal. Johnson has scored a point in all 56 games she has appeared in since her arrival as a freshman. Maryland, which has played host to the ACC Women s Lacrosse Championship twice, has won the tournament in both attempts with defeats of Carolina in the title game on each occasion. T E R P S L A X - A FAMILY AFFAIR Maryland freshmen Abbey Clipp and Annie Farrell have a family link to the Terps. Clipp s sister Becky is a former All- American for the women s lacrosse program. THE YOUNG AND TALENTED Four freshmen once again represented the University of Maryland when they played in the 2010 Under Armour All- America Game. Brooke Griffin led all South scorers with three goals as the North edged the South. Beth Glaros, Amalie Trentzsch and Kelsey Horton all earned starts and joined Griffin. Horton tallied a team-high four assists on the day, including two to Griffin, while adding a goal. Glaros scooped a ground ball and the combo of Griffin and Horton gathered a combined six draw controls in the all-star action. No. 1 Maryland vs. No. 12 Princeton G A L L A G H E R R ET U R N S F O R DEFENSE After serving a redshirt season during Maryland s run to the national title in 2010, Katie Gallagher returns to action in 2011 to help rejuvenate a defense that will be without the services of departing seniors Abby Caso and Karissa Taylor. Gallagher is entering her third season as a starter and totaled 24 caused turnovers and 33 ground balls prior to her redshirt senior season in CAPTAINS Cathy Reese has named seniors Sarah Mollison, Katie Gallagher and Laura Merrifield captains for the 2011 campaign. Mollison served as captain last year as a junior. The attacker was third on the team last season with 45 goals. The Melbourne, Australia, native is a two-time All-American and returns for her third season as a starter. Gallagher missed last season with an illness but is poised to lead the Terrapin defense in One of Maryland s strongest players, Gallagher is a threeyear starter for the Terps and played a key role in the squad capturing the 2009 ACC Championship. Merrifield has been a steady force in the midfield for Maryland since her arrival. As one of the tallest players in the country, she brings an imposing stature to the Terps offensive scheme and also boasts the speed to allow Maryland to run its fastpaced style of play. REESE RETURNS FOR FIFTH SEASON Head coach Cathy Reese returns for her fifth season at her alma mater. Johnson, who extended her streak to 46 consecutive games with a goal, landed on Maryland s career goals list, ranking eighth in program history with 150. Mollison s six helpers tied a Terrapin single-game record and vaulted the senior to ninth in career assists (81) at Maryland. The reigning national champions kicked off the season with an offensive onslaught, leaping out to a 9-0 lead to start the 2011 campaign. Johnson scored four goals in Maryland s opening run and Kristy Black added two. Freshman Beth Glaros capped the drive with her first goal as a Terp at 14:30. Richmond did not counter until a Mary Flowers goal at 12:06. Flowers, the 2010 A-10 Midfielder of the Year, led the Spiders with three scores on the day. Offensively, Maryland (3-0) was led by a trio of hat tricks from Sarah Mollison, Katie Schwarzmann and Kristy Black. Despite having her streak of consecutive games with a goal snapped at 47, Karri Ellen Johnson tied a career-high with three assists. The Terps traded goals to open the match before PSU s Elaine Welch scored at 20:51 to give Maryland its first deficit of the 2011 campaign. The Terrapins (6-0, 2-0 ACC), who utilized all but two players on their roster, were led in scoring by freshman Amalie Trentzsch s three goals, including the first of her career. Seven players tallied two goals each including Kristy Black, Colleen Dawson, Danielle Kirk, Katie Schwarzmann, Sarah Mollison, Meris Walsh and Bria Phillips. In addition to Trentzsch, freshmen Jen Mendez and Walsh also tallied their first career goals in the Red and Black. Maryland jumped out to an incredible 17-0 lead in the first half and did not allow a George Mason (1-4) shot until the five-minute mark. Nine of the Terps 17 scores were assisted and Maryland capped the half with a devastating 29-4 shot advantage. The Terps did not play one of their regular starters in the second half and still managed to outscore the Patriots 4-2 in the final stanza. In a rematch of last season s national semifinal, it was evident early that Syracuse, led by former Maryland assistant Gary Gait, had visions of holding the ball as long as possible to limit the Terrapin attack s scoring opportunities. The Terps managed only six shots in the first half but capitalized on four of them to boast a 4-2 lead through 30 minutes. The two teams broke even in the second stanza, both posting three goals, but back-to-back scores by Johnson and Mollison around the14- minute mark and a solid defensive effort provided the Terps with enough momentum for the win. Maryland was led in scoring by Laura Merrifield, who totaled four goals on the day including a hat trick in the first half. Despite a slow start, Karri Ellen Johnson ended the match with three scores to move past Allison Comito for fourth all-time in career goals at Maryland with 177. Katie Schwarzmann, Brandi Jones, Beth Glaros and Sarah Mollison all netted two. Mollison added four assists to her pair of goals for a game-high six points. The Melbourne, Australia, native tallied her 100th career helper with 1:01 remaining in the first stanza when she found favorite target Johnson to extend the Terrapin lead to six. On the whole, the Terrapin attack was extremely efficient, posting a.480 shot percentage against a Carolina defense that was giving up a mere 7.83 goals per game. After an evenly matched first half, where the Terps and fourth-ranked Tar Heels exchanged goals with five ties in the stanza, Maryland kicked off the second period on a devastating 3-0 run. 13 Head Coach Cathy Reese Fifth season/eighth overall Maryland, record at Maryland No. 1 Maryland vs. No. 12 Princeton Former Maryland standout and reigning IWLCA National Coach of the Year Cathy Reese enters her fifth season at the helm of the Terrapins women s lacrosse program after guiding Maryland to its first national championship since 2001 last season. With the Terps falling just once in regular season play, Maryland wrapped up the 2010 campaign on a devastating 10-game winning streak, which concluded in elation with a gallant comeback against five-time defending national champion Northwestern in the NCAA Women s Lacrosse Championship at Towson. Reese coached Maryland s first Tewaaraton Award winner since Jen Adams as Caitlyn McFadden was tabbed the top player in all of women s lacrosse. Four other Terrapins landed All-America status as well and Reese garnered IWLCA National Coach of the Year honors along with being named the top coach in the conference for the second straight season. Reese had Maryland on the verge of perfection in 2009, leading the Terps to a 21-1 record, an NCAA Final Four trip, and ACC Tournament and Regular Season championships. She boasted three Tewaaraton nominees, five All-Americans, five All-ACC honorees, the ACC Player and Rookie of the Year and the IWLCA Midfielder of the Year. Reese also earned a few honors of her own, racking up IWLCA South Region Coach of the Year accolades along with her second ACC Coach of the Year award in only three short seasons at the helm of the storied Maryland program. Reese continued to move Maryland in a positive direction in 2008, steering the Terps to an 18-3 record and an Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title. Once again, Reese boasted some of the top talent in the nation as senior Dana Dobbie was tabbed ACC Player of the Year in addition to being named a finalist for the Tewaarton Trophy, given annually to the nation s best player. Dobbie and fellow seniors Kelly Kasper and Lauren Cohen joined sophomore Caitlyn McFadden on the All-America team while Kasper accompanied Dobbie as a Tewaarton finalist. The Terps 18-3 record was the best for the program since 2003 as Maryland punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the 18th consecutive season. Reese returned to her alma mater in 2007 as the head coach and guided the Terps to a 16-4 record, including a first-place finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference at 4-1, earning the conference s Coach of the Year award. Maryland had bowed out of the NCAA Tournament in the first round the previous two seasons, but Reese s Terps advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2004 and had the most wins since Included in those 16 wins were a pair against teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the country against North Carolina and Duke, respectively. Reese s guidance produced more than just team success. Dana Dobbie was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy, given annually to the nation s best player, and was the ACC Player of the Year. In addition, Dobbie along with Becky Clipp, Kelly Kasper, and Krista Pellizzi were named All- Americans. Reese returned to Maryland after spending her first three seasons as head coach at the University of Denver where she guided the Pioneers to their most successful season in school history in Denver finished that year with a 16-5 record and rattled off 11-straight wins over the course of 43 days. With a 4-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) record, the Pioneers won its first-ever regular season championship in For her efforts, Reese was named the 2006 MPSF Coach of the Year. In addition, two of her student-athletes were also given season-ending awards as Denver sweeped the conference accolades. Kristie Leggio was tabbed the Player of the Year and Karen Morton was the Newcomer of the Year. In her three seasons in the Mile High City, 11 student-athletes were named to the All-MPSF Team. Not only did her students excel on the field, but they also achieved in the classroom as Denver studentathletes were named to the Academic All-Conference team 11 times. Prior to lifting the Denver program to national attention, Reese spent nine seasons in College Park, four as a student-athlete and five as an assistant coach. During that span, the women s lacrosse program had one of the most successful streaks seen in collegiate women s sports history. The Terps won seven national championships in her first nine years on campus. That is the third-longest streak in women s NCAA history in any sport. When Reese first stepped foot on campus as a freshman, it was impossible to gauge how successful she and the Terps would be. Maryland did not lose in her first two seasons as a student-athlete, and it did not lose until midway through her junior campaign. In all, Reese and the Terps went 50-straight games without a loss. In her playing career, Reese guided the Terps to an incredible 75-4 record. Reese graduated in 1998 with a degree in speech communications. She and her husband, Brian, who is also a volunteer coach for the program, have three children, Riley, who is six years old, and Brody, who is four years old.
