UMBC Stadium Series Record Loyola leads, Last Meeting Loyola won, 7-4 February 23, 2010, in Catonsville, Md. Series History Loyola leads the series, , and has won two straight. The Greyhounds took the 2010 contest on February 23 by a score of 7-4 in Catonsville, Md. Grace Gavin produced three points with two goals and an assist and Caroline Hager tallied twice to lead Loyola s offensive attack. Kerry Stoothoff was outstanding in goal, allowing just the four goals while collecting 16 saves. The series dates back to 1973 and the teams played annually until The series was renewed to annual in 2000 and the teams have met every season since. Scouting the Retrievers UMBC has won three straight and fi ve of six entering today. The Retrievers have victories over Towson and Delaware both teams Loyola has beaten thus far. The Retrievers score at a rate of goals per game and are getting 80.6 percent of their 98 goals from fi ve players. Erika Braerman is the leading scorer with 17 goals and 13 assists for 30 points. Amanda Pappas matches her with 17 tallies. Off And Running Loyola s 6-0 start is its best since the 2003 Final Four team raced out to 14 straight victories en route to a 17-2 fi nal record. That team ended the regular season ranked No. 1. The Greyhounds remained at No. 5 in the Inside Lacrosse/deBeer Media poll and No. 6 in the IWLCA Coaches poll released Monday. The rankings are the highest for Loyola since the 2004 season. Collecting Hardware Loyola s string of BIG EAST honors continued Monday when senior Meg Decker was selected as the Offensive Player of the Week. She collected six goals and three assists for nine points during the week, matching her career-best with six points at Delaware with four goals and two assists. Thus far, the only week during which the Greyhounds have not received one of the two weekly winners was February 28 when their only contest was the exhibition against the English National Team. Loyola is the only BIG EAST team to sweep the awards through fi ve weeks of honors. Seniors Grace Gavin and Abby Rehfuss each scored three times and senior Meg Decker and freshman Marlee Paton tallied twice apiece for 10 of Loyola s 11 goals. Sophomore Joanna Dalton added the last Greyhounds goal and Decker and senior Caroline Hager added assists. Junior Kerry Stoothoff got the win in goal. The Greyhounds opened the season with a 15-8 home win over then-no. 7 Virginia and followed that in their next outing with a 12-2 win over then-no. 17 Towson. The Greyhounds remain within the state lines through the month of March, not leaving the state again until a BIG EAST trip to Cincinnati and Notre Dame on the fi rst weekend of April. Last year, the Greyhounds opened the season with four consecutive road games before hosting nearby-rival Towson in the home opener. Turning Delaware Blue Freshman Marlee Paton scored with 34 seconds remaining to give Loyola a come-from-behind win Wednesday at Delaware. Loyola trailed with 5:12 remaining before mounting the furious comeback. Senior Meg Decker tallied four times and added a pair of assists for six points. Senior Meg Steffe collected her fi rst win of the season, entering the game in the second half and recording a pair of saves. Lions, Tigers and Bears After a two-week layoff from NCAA competition following the 15-8 season-opening win over Virginia, Loyola played the Tigers, the Lions and the Bears over the next week. The run started with a 12-2 win at the then-no. 17 Towson Tigers. The Greyhounds returned home to host and collect wins over the Penn State Nittany Lions (10-7) and the Cornell Big Red (14-9). She assisted on an eighth goal to equal her career-high for points in a game. Junior Kelly Stoothoff collected 12 saves for her fourth straight win to open the season. She turned away 10 fi rst-half shots. Senior Abby Rehfuss was the only additional multiple-goal scorer with two as fi ve other Greyhounds tallied once. Penned In The Greyhounds picked up their third win with a 10-7 victory over Penn State on March 8, rallying from a 5-1 deficit early in the second half by scoring nine in the second stanza to win. Meg Decker and Grace Gavin tallied hat tricks in the win. Kellye Gallagher set a new career high with fi ve ground balls to lead the team in that category. Decker controlled seven draws in the win, one away from her career high. Tiger Trap Loyola took the 39th meeting with local rival Towson on March 5 by dominating both ends of the fi eld, rolling to a 12-2 win at Towson s Unitas Stadium. The 12-2 result matched the biggest Greyhounds win over the Tigers since March 28, 2001, when Loyola turned in a 13-3 win on the road. Loyola now leads the all-time series, Kerry Stoothoff came up big for Loyola once again, making 10 saves, including seven in the second half, for her second win of the season. Four Greyhounds scored two goals each (Grace Gavin, Caroline Hager, Marlee Paton and Abby Rehfuss) and four more each tallied one (Cara Filippelli, Taryn VanThof, Ali Carpenter and Ashley Cahill). 4 Cahill, VanThof and Carpenter each scored their fi rst career goal in the win. Jolly Good Loyola hosted the England national team on February 24 in exhibition action and bested the British visitors, A pair of freshmen enjoyed a successful evening as Marlee Paton and Taryn VanThof tied for the team lead with three goals each. Eight different players scored for the Greyhounds on the night. Joanna Dalton and Meg Decker each added two, and Grace Gavin, Abby Rehfuss, Caroline Hager and Alison Habicht all added one apiece. Heck UVa Win Loyola began its 39th season in impressive fashion, knocking off the then-ranked No. 7 Virginia Cavaliers by a score of 15-8 on Saturday, Feb. 19. Eight different Greyhounds tallied goals for Loyola, including freshman Marlee Paton, who led all scorers with four goals. Grace Gavin added three and Caroline Hager and Meg Decker each chipped in two. Prior to the win against Virginia, the last time Loyola boasted eight scorers in a game was on March 24, 2010, when the Greyhounds topped Stony Brook, Nine different players scored for Loyola in the win over the Seawolves. Amazing Grace Grace Gavin enters the year with the chance to make signifi cant strides in the Loyola record books. She sits 53 points short of tying the Loyola career point record, 47 goals short of the career goal mark and 61 assists shy of the career assists record. Gavin enters this week on a 46-game goal streak after scoring three in the team s 11-7 win over James Madison on March 19. Paton s Place Freshman Marlee Paton was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on February 21 after scoring four goals in her collegiate debut against Virginia, leading all scorers. For her effort, Paton was named the WomensLax.com Rookie of the Week the week of February 21 as well. Hard Road to Travel The Greyhounds 2011 schedule includes fi ve opponents in the March 21 edition of the IWLCA Top 20. Loyola has already defeated No. 8 Virginia (15-8) and No. 10 James Madison (11-7). Other opponents appearing on the Greyhounds schedule in the top 20 include: No. 17 Notre Dame (April 3), No. 13 Georgetown (April 19) and No. 11 Syracuse (April 29). The Greyhounds also have defeated Penn State (10-7) and play Rutgers (April 23), both of whom are receiving votes in the poll. Leaders of the Pack Midfi elder Cara Filippelli, midfi elder Abby Rehfuss and goalkeeper Kerry Stoothoff serve as captains for Loyola this year. Big Respect in the BIG EAST BIG EAST coaches predicted Loyola to fi nish fourth in the conference in the annual preseason conference poll. The Greyhounds went 5-3 in BIG EAST play last year en route to a fourth-place fi nish. Georgetown took top honors, followed by Syracuse and Notre Dame. Grace Gavin, Cara Filippelli and Abby Rehfuss were named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on January 25. Gavin was a unanimous selection, as well as taking BIG EAST Preseason Attack Player of the Year honors. The announcement marked Gavin s third straight year on the team, Filippelli s second and Rehfuss fi rst. Old `Hounds, New Tricks Loyola returns 10 starters from the 2010 team that ended the year ranked No. 13, including 2010 BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year Grace Gavin. Gavin fi nished the year with 64 goals and 23 assists for 87 points, also earning IWLCA Second-Team All- American and WomensLax.com All-American honors. The returners for Loyola in 2011 combined for 198 goals and 81 assists last year. The team also sees three Second-Team All-BIG EAST selections from 2010 return for this season. Rehfuss and Filippelli earned the honor in addition to junior defender Ana Heneberry, who ranked second on the team with 35 caused turnovers and third with 39 ground balls. The Greyhounds lose only two starters from last year s squad that reached the BIG EAST Semifi nals, but two players who served big roles for Loyola. Emily Gibson tallied 48 points for the Greyhounds (33 goals and 15 assists), second-most on the team, while Tara Gardner led the team from the defensive end, starting all 18 games. Party at Our Place Loyola will host the 2013 BIG EAST Women s Lacrosse Championship at the Ridley Athletic Complex on May 2 and 4, The event will mark the fi rst BIG EAST postseason event Loyola has hosted. In nine years, BIG EAST teams have made 23 appearances in the NCAA tournament and six teams have made it to the fi nal four. Three teams (Syracuse, Notre Dame and Georgetown) have appeared in the tournament for three years straight. Young Pups Loyola welcomes seven freshmen to the team in Top incoming players include Ali Carpenter (Baltimore Sun Player to Watch, hat trick in the IAAM-A Maryland State Championship Game), Taryn VanThof (Led high school team in goals, assists and ground balls for all four years and scored fi rst goal against Towson) and Marlee Paton (Youngest player on the Australian Senior National Team that took the silver medal at the 2009 Women s Lacrosse World Cup, scored four goals in debut against Virginia). Steering the Ship Head Coach Jen Adams returns to lead the Greyhounds for the third year, looking to build on a record at Loyola. In 2010 under Adams, Loyola reached its fi rst ever BIG EAST Semifi nal and led the nation in caused turnovers (13.06/game) for the second consecutive season. The team also enjoyed its best-ever season in the BIG EAST (5-3) and ranked in the top 25 in fi ve statistical categories. Assistant Coach Dana Dobbie also returns for her third season. A two-time All-American and Tewaaraton Trophy fi nalist at Maryland, Dobbie has overseen a Loyola midfi eld unit that has produced four All-BIG EAST selections and led the in caused turnovers over the last two years. Loyola adds new assistant coach Katie Chrest to the coaching staff this year. Chrest, a three-time All-American at Duke, played on the championship-winning 2009 U.S. Women s World Cup Team after becoming the Blue Devils all-time leading scorer and winning the 2005 Tewaaraton Trophy. Plotting the Course After tonight, the Greyhounds return to action Sunday when it hosts Denver at noon at the Ridley Athletic Complex. The contest is the fi nal non-conference clash of the season before Loyola opens BIG EAST play on April 1 with a trip to Cincinnati and a match at Notre Dame two days later.

6 Jen Adams Head Coach Maryland 01 Third Season Innovative. Difference-Maker. Creative. Stellar. Spectacular: All words used to describe Jen Adams throughout her illustrious playing career on the collegiate and international levels. Those same adjectives hold true for her coaching and leadership styles as she enters her second season at the helm of the Loyola women s lacrosse program. Over her fi rst two seasons with the Greyhounds, Adams has directed a resurgence of the program back to national prominence. She has helped Loyola to a record during that time and a berth in the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Championships. In her second season at the helm, Adams built on the winning season from her fi rst campaign, helping the Greyhounds to their best BIG EAST record in program history (5-3) and an 11-7 record. Loyola ended the year with a No. 13 ranking in the coaches poll and a No. 15 ranking in the media poll. Adams continued her emphasis on defense, as Loyola led the country in caused turnovers per game (13.06) for the second straight year. Additionally, the 2010 team fi nished 21st in scoring offense, 22nd in points (327 in 18 games), 24th in scoring defense, 24th in draw controls (13.22/game) and 24th in scoring margin. The season featured a six-game winning streak that included a victory over No. 20 Rutgers, the fi rst win at Ridley Athletic Complex by any Loyola program. Adams team in 2010 also produced the BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year and four players who were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. In her fi rst season as a head coach in 2009, Adams got the Greyhounds off to a great start, winning seven of their fi rst eight games, and concluded the season at The winning record was the fi rst for the Loyola program since the 2004 season. The Greyhounds who fi nished the year ranked 18th in the fi nal national poll, led the nation with caused turnovers per game. Additionally, Loyola collected ground balls per game, ranking sixth in the country. Loyola, which has traditionally been a strong defensive team, continued that distinction in Adams fi rst season at the helm. Through Adams guidance, the `Hounds added another aspect to its repertoire, becoming one of the elite offensive teams in the nation, averaging goals per game, ranking third in the highly-competitive BIG EAST Conference and 13th in the NCAA. Considered by most to be the best women s lacrosse player of all time and the top young coach in America, Jen Adams became the seventh head coach of Loyola women s lacrosse in the 36-year history of the program on June 6, Adams served as the associate head coach at the University of Maryland during the 2007 and 2008 seasons and was an assistant coach to current Maryland Head Coach Cathy Reese at the University of Denver from At Maryland, Adams rejuvenated the Terrapins offense to play in her up-tempo attacking style. In her fi rst season as associate head coach, Maryland scored 287 goals, the most it had recorded in a season since 2001, Adams senior year as a student-athlete. In 2008, Adams helped Maryland ascend to a No. 2 rank nationally. The Terrapins, who fi nished with an 18-3 record, scored an average of 14.9 goals per game, sixth nationally, and were second in Division I with 477 total points. Two Maryland student-athletes fi nished in the top 50 nationally in goals per game, and three were in that same range for assists per game. Adams put together arguably the best collegiate lacrosse career of any player in the collegiate ranks during her tenure at Maryland from She racked up honors like she scored goals and recorded assists and was named to the NCAA Division I Women s Lacrosse 25th Anniversary Team in April The Brighton, South Australia native, was named the three-time national player of the year and was the fi rst recipient of the Tewaaraton Trophy in Adams set every scoring record for the Terrapins - season and career - helping them win national titles in each of the four seasons she spent in College Park. She fi nished her storied career with 267 goals, 178 assists and 445 total points. Her marks for total points stands today as an NCAA record, and her goals total is still a record at Maryland. In addition to her career marks, Adams ADAMS HEAD COACHING CAREER RECORD Year Team Overall BIG EAST 2009 Loyola Loyola Loyola Total 3 Years had single-season performances that also rank amongst the best in Maryland and NCAA history. During her Teawaarton-winning senior season, Adams led the nation with 88 goals, 60 assists and 148 total points, setting school single-season marks in the process. Those season totals only added her name one rung higher, as she had set school records with 81 goals, 55 assists and 136 total points the previous season. Adams efforts were not limited just to the lacrosse fi eld. In addition to her three All- America honors as a player, Adams earned the 2000 and 2001 Honda/Broderick Award for women s lacrosse excellence in the classroom and on the fi eld. She also garnered CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team honors as a senior. She was also named the National Attacker of the Year in 1999, 2000 and 2001 and earned Atlantic Coast Conference Female Athlete of the Year laurels in 2000 and Adams accomplishments did not end when she hung up her cleats for the Terrapins. She has been a member of the Australian National Team since her pre-maryland days. In 2005, Adams led the Aussie National Team to a 14-7 defeat of the United States in the Women s Lacrosse World Cup. She scored four goals, and assisted on three others, in the gold medal game. She earned All-World honors at the games, leading all players with 26 assists and 47 total points. Adams was also a member of the Australian National Team that took home the silver medal the 2009 Women s World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic. Adams recorded a team-high 15 goals and led the tournament with 26 assists and 41 total points in the World Cup and recorded a goal and a pair of assists against the United States in the gold medal game. In addition to her continued participation with the Australian National Team, Adams has been a highly-sought clinician around the world and is the primary spokeswoman for STX Women s Lacrosse. Adams graduated from Maryland in 2001 with a bachelor of arts degree in sports marketing.
