Denver Women s Lacrosse DU_WLAX NOTES LOOKING BACK TO LAST TIME OUT [23/RV] Denver defeated UConn 13-5 to earn its first BIG EAST win of the season Quintin Hoch-Bullen led the visitors in scoring with five goals, her third-consecutive hat trick, and added an assist for a team-high six points Eliza Radochonski had a hat trick, her second of the season, and added an assist for four points in the game Kendra Lanuza, Caitlin Derry, Hoch-Bullen and Radochonski all had one assist The Pioneers were 5-9 on free-position attempts, while holding the Huskies to 2-7 Freshmen accounted for nine goals in the contest, including the last eight scored by the Pioneers Carson Gregg made 11 saves in the game on 16 shots on goal, and only allowed one goal in the second half, which came with 9:08 remaining. The sophomore goalkeeper kept the Huskies to their lowest score this season Molly Little had a season-high seven draw controls, Elizabeth Behrins and Audrey Schreck each recorded three caused turnovers and Behrins tallied a team-high five ground balls Denver had the statistical advantage in the contest in shots (38-24/ shots on goal), draw controls (11-9), and ground balls (24-20) HISTORY VS COLORADO The Pioneers are 2-2 versus the Buffaloes Both teams are 1-1 in Denver, with Denver winning the first two meetings and Colorado the last two in the series In their last meeting, No. 14 Denver lost to No. 13 Colorado, 14-3, on March 3, 2017 Emily Conway scored two of DU s goals with Caitlin Derry tallying the other. All goals were unassisted The Pioneers faced a 10-1 halftime deficit after the Buffaloes scored four of the first five goals of the game by the midway mark of the opening half Denver has averaged 9.5 goals per game against Colorado, while the Buffaloes have averaged 8.75 in the four contests SCOUTING THE BUFFALOES Colorado was 16-4 last season, 7-1 in the MPSF, and made it to the NCAA tournament where they lost in the first round They are 2-3 on the road this season The Buffs went on an 8-2 run in their last game, against Oregon, to defeat the Ducks 14-9 behind six goals from Samantha Nemirov Of their 144 goals, 30 were on free-position shots and 96 were unassisted Senior attacker Darby Kiernan leads the Buffaloes with 34 goals, 13 assists, 47 points and 83 draw controls. She has taken 61 total shots, 51 of which were shots on goal (.836 sog%). She is also tied with a team-high eight free-position goals Senior defender Kelsie Garrison has a team-high 29 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers on the season Senior defender Cassie Ekstrom has a team-high 16 caused turnovers Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Lisells has appeared in eight games (started seven games) for Colorado, allowing 62 goals and making 83 saves on 182 shots faced in 450:41 minutes in net. She has a goals allowed average of 8.25 and a save percentage of.572. Senior Sophia Gambitsky (150 minutes, 34 goals allowed, 18 saves, 64 shots faced,.346 save %, 13.6 G.A.A.) started the first three games As a unit, the goaltenders are allowing 96 goals with 101 saves on 246 shots faced, for a saves % of.513 and a G.A.A. of 9.59 PIONEERS IN THE POLLS In the IWLCA Coaches Poll this week, Denver ranked tied for 25th (50 pts) while receiving votes in the Inside Lacrosse Cascade Media Poll Denver reached its highest ranking in the polls in nearly four years last season at the No. 13 spot in both the IWLCA Coaches Poll and the Cascade Media Poll the week of March 20, 2017 DENVER S SCHEDULE The Pioneers will have played or will face seven opponents on their schedule who were either ranked or receiving votes in the latest media poll, and six ranked teams in the IWLCA poll DU shares four common opponents with Colorado: Florida, San Diego State, Virginia Tech and Stanford. CU lost 16-9 to Florida, but beat San Diego State 17-12, Virginia Tech 18-3 and Stanford HOME IS WHERE THE W S ARE Denver was 8-0 at home in 2017, outscoring opponents ( goals per game average) In the last five years, DU is 36-7 (.837) at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, including a perfect 12-0 record in 2014 In Coach Kelly s tenure at DU, the Pioneers are (.835) at home, including back-to-back 8-0 home records in 2012 and 2013 Prior to the March 7 home loss, the last time that the Pioneers lost at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium was April 10, 2016 in a 9-6 loss to Southern California FINDING NEW CONTRIBUTORS Through the eight games, freshmen Quintin Hoch-Bullen and Eliza Radochonski have accounted for 27 goals and 38 points, including hat tricks from Radochonski against Stanford and UConn and three-straight hat tricks from Hoch- Bullen against Niagara, Temple and UConn As a class, freshmen have tallied 46 pts (30 G, 16 A). Radochonski is second on the team in assists (6) and Hoch- Bullen and Hannah Liddy are third and fourth with five and four, respectively. Hoch-Bullen is second on the team in goals (16) and points (21) and Radochonski is third in points (17) and fourth in goals (11) Hannah Liddy is tied for fourth on the team in assists with four and scored a goal against Niagara for five points on the year Caroline Wiseman scored her first career goal against San Diego State and Liddy against Niagara, and her second against UConn GAME 9 DENVER VS COLORADO 2

3 Sophomore transfer Molly Little scored nine goals and is second on the team with 29 draw controls, starting in seven games for the Crimson and Gold Lanuza leads the team with 10 assists The Pioneers had goals from six different players, and eight different players recorded a point in the victory over Stanford. Against Louisville, seven different players scored a goal and eight different players recorded a point. In the game against San Diego State, 10 different players recorded at least one point, against Virginia Tech, seven different Pioneers recorded a point, against Niagara 10 different players recorded a point and against UConn seven different players recorded a point Maddie Baum has taken the majority of the draw controls, recording 40 Besides Carson Gregg in net, freshman midfielder Caroline Wiseman started in her first career collegiate game against Stanford, as did junior midfielder Maddie Baum, and Molly Litlle started her first game as a Pioneer against Louisville. Katy Miele started her first game against Temple MILESTONE ALERT Elizabeth Behrins currently sits at 97 career points, and would be the 18th player to reach the 100 career point milestone, and the second Pioneer to reach it this season (Kendra Lanuza reached it Feb. 23) Julia Feiss is right behind Behrins with 92 career points SMOOTH TRANSITION This will be Denver s second year in the BIG EAST after spending 13 seasons as a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation DU advanced to the BIG EAST Championship game against Florida in its first year in the conference after going 7-2 in the regular season and defeating Georgetown 9-8 in the semifinals Denver owns a record against BIG EAST opponents, having faced Vanderbilt the most (seven times, 4-3 record), but is searching for its first win against Florida (0-5) 2018 BIG EAST Denver was picked to finish second in the BIG EAST Preseason Poll with 73 total points and one first-place vote. DU had two representatives on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team in junior attackers Julia Feiss and Kendra Lanuza (unanimous selection) Carson Gregg earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week in weeks one, two and seven, and Julia Feiss was named Attacker of the Week in week five. Quintin Hoch-Bullen was named Freshman of the Week in week seven Denver leads the BIG EAST in goals against average (9.75) with 78 goals allowed, is second in fewest total turnovers (130), fourth in saves percentage (.466) and turnovers per game (16.25) and fifth in caused turnovers per game (10.0) SENIORS The Pioneers have only four seniors on the roster this year Riley Eggeman will help man the midfield, Katy Miele has moved to goalkeeper and captains Caitlin Derry and Hanna Bocklet will be a part of the attack and draw specialist groups, respectively NOTES Eggeman has started in 35 games throughout her DU career and appeared in 52 games. Derry has played in 57 games, starting in three, and Bocklet has appeared in 27 games Derry was third on the team in assists in 2017, contributing on 10 goals JUNIORS 10 juniors return to the 2018 roster, highlighted by Elizabeth Behrins, Julia Feiss, Kendra Lanuza and Audrey Schreck, four of the top five point- and goal-scorers from last season, and the four top returners Feiss enters the game on 20-game goal and point streaks, dating back to March 12, 2017 vs. Vermont Kendra Lanuza s 16-game point streak was snapped against Virginia Tech on March 7, 2018 Lanuza recorded her 100th career point in the first half against the Aztecs, the 17th player in program history to do so Feiss leads the team with 22 goals and 25 points, nine of the goals coming off of free-position shots Lanuza leads the team with eight assists and Kennedy Milburn is tied for the team-high with 11 ground balls Feiss led in goals scored with 50 goals and Lanuza led in points with 70 (33 goals, 37 assists) last season Lanuza led the Pioneers in assists last year with her 37, and Feiss was second with 14 Nicki Wilkinson and Milburn are the top-returners for the defense, with both starting in 17 games last year. Senior Layne Voorhees and sophomore Kendra Lanuza were unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST selections and the duo would also earned spots on the IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region first and second teams, respectively. Sophomore Elizabeth Behrins and senior goalkeeper Maddy Stevenson were both named to the Second Team All-BIG EAST in leading the Pioneers to their best record in three years. In 2017, the Pioneers finished 4th in the nation in scoring defense (8.44), 8th in caused turnovers per game (11.61) and 11th in scoring margin (4.83). Denver led the BIG EAST in scoring defense, while on an individual basis, Voorhees led the conference in caused turnovers by game (2.33), Julia Feiss led in shots on goal per game (4.94) and Stevenson led in goals-against average at On March 12, 2017, Kelly recorded her 200th career win with a 14-4 victory over Vermont. In 2016, DU went.500 at 9-9, while in 2015, Kelly led the Pioneers to a 13-5 finish and their fourth straight winning season. Kelly led the Pioneers to their second-straight NCAA Tournament in 2014, where they beat Jacksonville to advance to the Round of 16. Denver went undefeated in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for the second season in a row in 2014 and finished the year with a 19-2 record. Denver completed the 2013 season with an 18-3 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in the MPSF. DU was ranked No. 16 in the final IWLCA Coaches Poll. The Crimson and Gold ranked second in the nation in caused turnovers (11.76), fourth in win percentage (.857), fifth in points (433.0) and ninth in scoring offense (13.9). Denver broke a team record, set a season before, by winning 15-straight games. In 2012, the Pioneers posted a 12-3 overall record and a 6-1 record in the MPSF. DU was No. 1 in the nation in caused turnovers (12.6 per game), 10th in scoring offense (13.93 goals per game) and 11th in scoring margin (4.2). The Pioneers also set a team record by winning 12-straight games. The Pioneers went 13-5 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the MPSF in Denver advanced to the MPSF Championship Tournament final, which DU hosted at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, but was Assistant Coach Tee Ladouceur Alma Mater: Syracuse, 11 Experience: First Season edged by Stanford in double overtime. Denver ended the season ranked No. 20 in the nation. Kelly led the Pioneers to a record of 13-6 overall and 5-0 in the MPSF, concluding the 2008 season ranked No. 19 in the nation. In 2007, Kelly steered DU to a 16-3 mark and a 5-0 sweep of the MPSF schedule, ending the season ranked No. 15. In Kelly s first two years at DU she led her players to success. Kristie Leggio (2007) and Kelly O Connell (2008) picked up IWLCA All-America honors during their careers and were named MPSF Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008, respectively. In addition to her duties with Denver s team, Kelly serves on the NCAA Division I Women s Lacrosse committee. Prior to DU, Kelly served five years as the head coach at Boston University. The Baltimore native posted an impressive (.660) mark as head coach at BU, including consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and America East regular season and tournament championships in 2005 and The Terriers finished in the top-10 in the national rankings in Kelly s final two seasons, and Kelly was named America East Coach of the Year twice during her five-year tenure at BU. During Kelly s tenure, 24 players were named to the America East Honor Roll, while five received selection to the Commissioner s High Honor Roll. In addition, six Terriers received IWLCA Academic Honor Roll accolades. During her five seasons at BU, 15 different Terriers earned a combined 26 selections to the allconference first team, while 11 players received a combined 19 regional All-America accolades, including the first two first-team All-Americans in program history. Before taking over the reins at BU, Kelly served under Linda Ohrin as an assistant coach at Towson University for three years. Kelly coached the Tigers defense and assisted in scouting and recruiting. As a player, Kelly was a standout midfielder at the University of Delaware from , earning All-America honors in 1996, 1997 and 1998, before playing for the United States National team from Kelly was inducted into the University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Baltimore Chapter of U.S Lacrosse Hall of Fame in Kelly has held a number of coaching positions. In addition to traveling throughout the U.S. teaching lacrosse, she has been an ambassador for the game of lacrosse all over the world.
