The opening draw is set for 2 p.m. at PSU s indoor football facility, Holuba Hall. This marks the 34th meeting all-time between the teams, with PSU leading It s also JMU s first of three regular-season games against Big Ten teams. The 2019 JMU lacrosse season is presented by O Neill s Grill. JMU-PSU SERIES BY THE NUMBERS The JMU-Penn State series dates back to 1981, and Wednesday s meeting marks the seventh straight year the teams have met. Prior to 2013, JMU and PSU played at least once every year between 1981 and PSU holds a 14-5 advantage in games played in University Park, while the Dukes are an even 7-7 at home. Last time the teams met, JMU held off Penn State at home back on March 7, Penn State won both meetings at home in 2017, including a 12-9 win on March 8 and a victory in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament on May 14. Since 2013, six of the seven games have been decided by three goals or less, including four by a single goal. LIZZY FOX TAKES HOME CAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Lizzy Fox was named CAA Rookie of the Week on March 5 following a career performance in JMU s 21-4 win last Friday versus Canisius. Fox registered two goals and two assists for a career-high four points. It was her first game tallying more than a single goal and assist in a game. She had a goal and an assist in each half, helping JMU to tie for its ninth-highest goal total in school history. TRIO NAMED TO TEWAARATON WATCH LIST Three JMU players in Hanna Haven, Caroline Sdanowich and Molly Dougherty were named to the 2019 Tewaaraton Award Watch List. It marks the second straight season JMU placed three players on the initial watch list. The Tewaaraton Award, now in its 19th season, is presented annually to the top male and female collegiate lacrosse players in the United States. The selection committees are comprised of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed each year by the Tewaaraton Foundation. The Dukes were one of nine Division I programs with at least three honorees. Maryland led the country with six while Boston College and Florida also had four picks. 3 SCOUTING PENN STATE The Nittany Lions enter the midweek showdown with a 3-2 record and are coming off a pair of road losses last week at Princeton (10-21) and Loyola (8-13). PSU averages 12.0 goals per game while conceding 11.6 to its foes. Madison Carter leads the offense with 16 goals and four assists, to go with 18 draw controls. Kayla Brisolari has eight goals, five helpers and a team-high 21 draws, while Quinn Nicolai has scored seven times. Missy Doherty is in her ninth season leading the program, holding a record. She s also in her 16th season as a head coach, having led CAA-rival Towson until JMU TIES ON PSU COACHING STAFF PSU Associate Head Coach Amy Altig is in her ninth season on the Nittany Lion staff and is a former all-conference goalkeeper for the Dukes. She earned Second Team All-CAA honors in both the 2003 and 2004 seasons, helping the Dukes to CAA titles in each of those years. She ranks in the top 20 of four JMU career categories, including ranking seventh in saves (452). Altig is also 10th in save percentage (.495), 11th in goals against average (9.2) and tied for 17th in ground balls (102). RECAPPING LAST JMU-PSU MEETING Last season, JMU held off Penn State for a win in Harrisonburg on March 7, Haley Warden recorded five goals, one assist, three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Elena Romesburg had a hat trick while tying her career high with five draw controls and collecting four ground balls. Hanna Haven and Kristen Gaudian each scored twice. Leading 7-4 at halftime, the Dukes scored six of seven to open the second to take a 13-5 lead with 13:33 to play. PSU came back with a 7-1 run but a save by Ellie Harmeyer with a minute to play sealed the win. DUKES DROP 21 ON CANISIUS JMU turned in its largest win of the young season with a 21-4 rout against Canisius on March 1 in Harrisonburg. The Dukes utilized a 15-goal run and held the Golden Griffins without a score for nearly 37 minutes to win for the fourth straight game. Halle Duenkel tied her career high with three goals, while Lizzy Fox had a career-high four points off two goals and two assists. A total of eight players scored at least two goals and the Dukes dominated nearly every category on the stat sheet. FRANTZ, KNOBLOCH FACE HS TEAMMATE Former high school teammates from New Jersey reunite on the lacrosse field Wednesday on opposite sidelines in JMU s Ava Frantz and Kacey Knobloch and Penn State s Quinn Nicolai. The three all played at Moorestown High School, as Nicolai graduated in 2017 and the JMU duo are 2018 high school grads. JMU VS. The Dukes fell a spot from sixth to seventh in the coaches poll, as Virginia leapfrogged JMU. The media poll spot is two higher from last week s No. 9 ranking. The win for JMU was its fourth straight and 17th in a row at home, dating back to April 1, JMU is one of two CAA teams to be ranked as Towson is 25th in this week s coaches poll. JMU has a +19 margin in draw controls and +15 in caused turnovers over the past four games. The Dukes held Virginia Tech without a goal for over 11 minutes three times in their first win of the year. They followed that up with back-to-back games not allowing a goal for a span of 23 minutes against both UConn and High Point. In the latest game, JMU went on a 15-0 run, holding Canisius off the board for almost 37 minutes to turn in its biggest win of the year. DUKES THE FAVORITE TO WIN CAA JMU was voted the favorite to win the Colonial Athletic Association title for a third straight season in The Dukes received six first-place votes and 36 points, while rival Towson was selected second with one first-place vote and 31 points. Elon was third, followed by Hofstra, Delaware, Drexel and William & Mary. JMU has won the CAA regular-season title in seven of the past nine seasons, winning five tournament championships during that span. The Dukes have claimed the regular-season crown in each of the previous three seasons, winning the tournament in 2017 and Six players were honored, as making the Preseason All-CAA Team were Hanna Haven, Charlotte Haggerty, Emma Johnson, Caroline Sdanowich and Molly Dougherty. Maddie McDaniel was also Honorable Mention. FOUR PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS JMU had four players named to the Inside Lacrosse Women s Division I Preseason Media All-America Team. Caroline Sdanowich, who anchors JMU s defense in 2019, is a Second Team Preseason All-American. Hanna Haven, Charlotte Haggerty and Emma Johnson were named Honorable Mention. DOUGHERTY, HAGGERTY PLAY FOR TEAM USA A pair of JMU sophomores were afforded the opportunity to compete with the best players in the world, as both were part of Team USA. Both Molly Dougherty and Charlotte Haggerty were named to the U.S. National Team s roster at the IWLCA President s Cup in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. in November. From there, Dougherty also earned a roster spot for the team s trip to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Spring Premiere at Stanford in January. Additionally, 2018 All-American Elena Romesburg joined Dougherty and Haggerty on Team USA back in November.
