2 12 Straight NCAA Tournaments 5 National Semifinals (1999, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008) What They re Saying: We re just excited to keep playing so excited to have the opportunity to keep playing with such a special group, said Duke Head Coach Kerstin Kimel. We re looking forward to a road trip to Penn with so many girls on our team from that area. We look forward to getting going and our preparations for Penn. Home Sweet Home: A total of 13 Duke women s lacrosse players call either Pennsylania or New Jersey home, and will get the chance to play close by this weekend. Looking At The Bracket: Of the 16 available slots, seven automatic bids to the 2009 NCAA Championships were awarded to conference tournament winners in Boston University (America East), Maryland (ACC), UMass (Atlantic 10), Notre Dame (Big East), Towson (Colonial), Penn (Ivy), and Colgate (Patriot), while Fairfield (MAAC) earned a berth with a win in the MAAC-NEC play-in game over Sacred Heart. That left eight remaining at-large spaces. Four-time defending national champions Northwestern will look to defend their title and received the top seed, while Maryland got the two, North Carolina the three, and Penn the four ahead of the Blue Devils. Notre Dame (6), Syracuse (7), and Princeton (8) rounded out the top-8 seedings. Duke is 4-5 against team s in the field this season. First-Round Action: All eight of the seeded teams advanced past the first round on May 10. Elsewhere in the bracket, Northwestern defeated UMass, 23-6; Princeton downed Georgetown, 15-9; North Carolina defeated Towson, 15-4; Notre Dame beat Vanderbilt, 19-13; Syracuse defeated Boston U, 20-10, and Maryland romped Colgate, Duke In The Tournament: This season marks Duke s 12th consecutive trip and 12th overall trip to the tournament. The Duke squad is (.542) all-time in NCAA Championships play. That winning percentage ranks eighth in tournament history. In 2008, Duke advanced to the national semifinals for the fourth straight year with wins over Georgetown and Maryland, before falling, 9-8, to the University of Pennsylvania in overtime on May 23. The Blue Devils will be in search of their fifth consecutive appearance in the semifinals, and first championship. DUKE AS THE... #1 Seed: 2-1 (2006) #2 Seed: 4-2 (2005, 2007) #4 Seed: 0-1 (2003) #5 Seed: 1-0 (2009) Kimel In The Tournament: All of those apparances have come under current head coach Kerstin Kimel, the fourth-most by any coach. Kimel s 23 tournament games coached also ranks fourth, while her 13 wins ranks fifth. The Mighty ACC: The Atlantic Coast Conference leads all leagues with three teams remaining in the eight-team quarterfinal field in Duke, Maryland, and North Carolina. Both the Big East (Syracuse, Notre Dame) and the Ivy League (Penn, Princeton) have two teams left, while the American Lacrosse Conference has one left in Northwestern. Looking Ahead: The 2009 semifinals & finals will again be hosted by Towson University and played at Johnny Unitas Stadium. The semifinal match-up is set for Friday, May 22, and will be televised on the CBS College Sports Network. The finals are Sunday, May 24, at 5:30 p.m. and will also air on CBS College Sports. Perhaps the biggest storyline of the tourmament will be the Northwestern Wildcats looking to defend their title and go for the team s fifth-straight NCAA Championship. Against The Quakers: Not having faced Penn during the 2009 regular-season, the Blue Devils hold a slim 2-1 all-time record over Penn in the series history. However, that one loss did hurt, as it was the Quakers who ousted Duke from the tournament last season in a 9-8 overtime game in the semifinals on May 23, A Look At Penn: The Quakers enter the contest with five 30+ goal scorers in Ali DeLuca (33g, 13a), Courtney Lubbe (26g, 16a), Erin Brennan (24g, 15a), Becca Edwards (22g, 12a), and Emma Spiro (30g, 3a). Keeper Emily Szelest has started all 16 games for Penn, allowing just 5.53 goals per game and stopping 49 percent of shots. The goals-against average ranks first in the nation, while the save percentage ranks 16th. Brennan, who was named the National Rookie of the Week on May 12, is the 2009 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, while Spiro was named the Co-Player of the Year. In Penn s first round game, a 10-8 victory over MAAC opponent Fairfield, the Quakers received a balance effort as they got two goals apiece from Edwards, DeLuca, Brennan, and Spiro. The squad was undefeated heading into the final week of the regular season, where it dropped a pair of contests to Northwestern (11-9) and Stanford (8-6). Duke s Leaders: Davis has led the team offensively this season, logging 59 goals and 15 assists for 74 total points, adding 20 ground balls, 31 draws, and 18 caused turnovers. Cryer now has 44 goals and 34 assists for a team-best 78 points, adding 46 draws, 12 caused turnovers, and 15 ground balls. Gilbride is next with 55 goals and 16 assists totaling 71 points, and has posted a squad-leading four game-winning goals which includes the Virginia game when she scored in the first overtime period on a free position shot to put Duke up Del Monte has posted a balanced 27 goals and 30 assists for 57 points. Bullard has scored 38 goals and leads all field players with 30 ground ball pickups, while Hamm leads the team in draw controls with 51 after she coralled a season-high seven in the first round. Imbesi has stepped up her play in recent weeks, notching 26 saves in the ACC Tournament and stopping 149 shots this season while scooping up 46 ground balls and eclipsing the 1,000-minute mark with 1067:04 played in She stopped nine versus UVA, including two big ones at the end of regulation and in overtime to preserve the Blue Devil lead. She has averaged eight saves-per-game in her last five contests. In ACC Play: In 2009 during ACC play, the Blue Devils posted a 3-2 record with victories over Virginia, Virginia Tech, and

3 12 Straight NCAA Tournaments 5 National Semifinals (1999, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008) BC, suffering losses to UNC and Maryland. Duke players have shined in ACC games, with senior Carolyn Davis ranking third in the Atlantic Coast Conference in goals per game (3.11) and fourth in points per game (3.89). Caroline Cryer ranks second in assists per game (1.78), third in points per game (4.00), and ninth in goals per game (2.22), while Megan Del Monte ranks third in assists per game (1.69), and Lindsay Gilbride sits fifth in goals per game (2.68) and 10th in points per game (3.42). Kim Imbesi ranks third in both goals against average (9.53) and save percentage (.468). In The ACC Tournament: The thirdseeded Duke women s lacrosse team erased an early 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 halftime lead, and led by as many four goals in the second half, but couldn t hang on as top-seeded Maryland downed the Blue Devils, 12-11, on April 26 to capture the 2009 ACC Championship at Virginia Tech s Thompson Field. The Terrapins outscored Duke 8-6 in what turned out to be a telling second half. Maryland s victory defended its regular-season ACC crown, as the team picked up its sixth ACC Championship and first since Duke is now 1-4 all-time in the ACC finals. Imbesi made six saves in the finals to finish a strong tournament with 26 total stops - just four off the tournament record held by Duke Assistant Coach Alex Kahoe. In three tournament games, Gilbride led the Blue Devils with eight goals, while Davis had seven, Sarah Bullard six, and Cryer five. Talking About The Tewaaraton: On May 5, it was announced that Davis is one of five finalists for the 2009 Tewaaraton Trophy, given annually to the top player in the country on both the men s and women s side. The five were selected from the 25 nominees selected by coaches across all three divisions. She becomes Duke s fifth finalist for the trophy, with the Blue Devils one winner coming in 2005 with Katie Chrest. The ninth annual men s and women s Tewaaraton Trophy winners will be announced at an awards ceremony May 28 in the nation s capital. Davis joins Notre Dame s Jillian Byers, North Carolina s Amber Falcone, Maryland s Caitlyn McFadden, and Northwestern s Hannah Nielsen who received the award in The Blue Devils Ned Crotty is a finalist on the men s side. Cryer and Davis joined Davis as Tewaaraton nominees, while Hamm also appeared on the Watch List announced prior to the season. World Cup Action: Cryer and Bullard were named to the 2009 women s lacrosse World Cup team along with former Blue Devils Katie Chrest and Megan Huether, it was announced in February. The Duke foursome is among the 18-member roster that will compete this summer and represent the United States in Prague, Czech Republic, from June The group was selected after competing in the fourth-annual Champion Challenge as members of the U.S. Elite THE KERSTIN KIMEL FILE Duke University - Head Coach Overall Davidson College - Head Coach Career Record University of Maryland 93 Speech Communications Four-Year Letterwinner in Lacrosse Haverford High School 89 Hometown: Havertown, Pa. team. Cryer and Bullard are two of only six collegiate players chosen, while Bullard becomes the youngest member of the team in its history, making the roster as just a sophomore. The team will be looking to get back to its winning ways in 2009, after its streak of four-straight World Cup championships was snapped in 2005 with a 14-7 loss to Australia. The United States won the 1989, 1993, 1997, and 2001 titles in addition to the inaugural game in Duke s Kate Kaiser was a member of the 2005 team, as she led the way with two goals in the loss and seven in total.
