Duke Women s Lacrosse Duke s first year of competition in women s lacrosse came in 199 when head coach Kerstin Kimel led the Blue Devils to a 3-12 record. The program came back in 1997 during its second campaign to secure an 8-8 mark, a solid improvement for Duke s newest sport. Then, the 1998 squad jumped to a new level, recording a 10-7 overall record and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. In 1999, the Blue Devils advanced to the national semifinals while turning in a 13-5 record. Duke posted an 11- record and advanced to the quarterfinals in The 2001 season was another stellar one, as the Blue Devils registered a 15-4 record on the season, advanced to the finals of the ACC Tournament and made the school s third consecutive trip to the national quarterfinals. In 2002, 2003, and 2004, Duke put together three more winning seasons with 10, 13 and 13 wins, respectively, and three trips to the NCAA Tournament. The 2005 season was one of the most successful in school history as Duke compiled a 17-4 record, advanced to the seminfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the second time and claimed its first ACC Tournament Championship. Katie Chrest was awarded the Tewaaraton Trophy as National Player of the Year and Megan Huether received US Lacrosse Goalie of the Year. In 200 the Blue Devils compiled an 18-3 record and made their second straight trip to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. Duke also reached the ACC Tournament final for the third year in a row. The 2007 squad earned a trip to the national semifinals, marking the third consecutive season and fourth time overall that the Blue Devils reached that plateau. The team finished with an 1-4 record and Caroline Cryer set the school record for goals in a season with 71. Women s lacrosse became the 12th women s varsity sport at Duke University. Other women s sports include basketball, cross country, fencing, field hockey, golf, indoor track, outdoor track, rowing, soccer, swimming, tennis and volleyball. 11

2 2008 SEASON OUTLOOK Duke enters the 2008 season with high expectations and is ranked No. 3 in the Lacrosse Magazine preseason poll. The Blue Devils are coming off a 1-4 record in 2007 that included their third consecutive trip to the NCAA semifinals and fourth overall in school history. The trip to the NCAA tournament was the 10th straight appearance for the Blue Devils. The team returns 23 letterwinners and seven of 12 starters while bringing in 10 new freshmen. The freshmen class was ranked second nationally as a group by Inside Lacrosse. The last three seasons have been the best in the history of Duke Women s Lacrosse, says Kimel. And while we graduated incredible talent and experience from our roster, we will work for and expect nothing less of ourselves in We have incredible young talent, depth, leadership in the senior class and a warrior mentality that is prevalent amongst our team leaders. These qualities will be essential and will serve us well in our fight for both the ACC and National Championship in Attack The Blue Devils graduated three of their top four and four of their top eight scorers from 2007, including starting attackers Kristen Waagbo and Leigh Jester. That team was ranked second in NCAA Division I in goals per game with However, Duke will return one starter and a significant contributor off the bench at attack, as well as add three top notch freshmen up top. Senior captain Caroline Cryer will look to lead at attack for the Blue Devils in Cryer was one of five finalists for the 2007 Tewaaraton Trophy as national player of the year as she scored a Duke record 71 goals and led the team on draw controls with. She was second on the team in points with 89 and a consensus first team All-America. Cryer is already eighth on the career goals list with 122 and in seventh place on the career assists and points lists with 40 and 12, respectively. Lindsay Gilbride sense and can finish in tough situations. Christie Kaestner has tremendous vision, stick skills and is a quick read. We are counting on her to be an integral part of facilitating our fast and secondary break. Morgan is an incredibly dynamic athlete. She is a great ball handler and has an exceptional ability to finish. Caroline has become the special player that we thought she could be, says Kimel. Her passion for the game and her work ethic has fueled her development in the last few years. These qualities combined with the support of outstanding teammates have made her into one of the nation s best players. Our freshmen offensive trio carries quite a punch and I expect all three to have an impact on our offensive unit this season. As a junior, Caroline did a tremendous job facilitating our transition game, winning the draw and being a major threat with and without the ball on offense. As a senior, she will continue to build on her success and assume more leadership responsibility on the field. In what looks to be the deepest midfield the team has ever had, senior Allie Johnson and junior Carolyn Davis will lead the way. The squad will definitely miss departed starters Michelle Menser and Rachel Sanford, who combined for 51 goals, 13 assists, 55 ground balls, draw controls and 49 caused turnovers in 2007, but looks to four returning players to step up and brings in a strong freshmen class. Three starters return from a unit led NCAA Division I in draw controls at per game, and 9.1 percent of those 304 total draws are by players who return this season. Hoping to move into a starting role and become a leader on attack will be junior Megan Del Monte. The native of Lutherville, Md., has played a key role as a reserve the last two seasons, amassing 18 goals and 1 assists in 38 games. Last season she was sixth in assists and ninth in points on the team, making her the Blue Devils highest scoring player off the bench. Del Monte showed what she is capable of in Duke s Jan. 27 exhibition against the U.S. Elite team when she went off for four goals and one assist. The experience that Megan gained in the last two seasons has prepared her to step in and assume a much greater leadership and scoring role for us, says Kimel. We will be counting on her steady play, field sense and vision to help pace our offense throughout the season. The three incoming freshmen who show a great deal of promise are Virginia Crotty, Christie Kaestner and Morgan Miller. Crotty was a member of the U.S. under-19 team that won the world championship in August of Kaestner and Miller are both two-time All-America team members. Virginia is quick and savvy, says Kimel. She has tremendous game Megan Del Monte Midfield Johnson played in all 20 games last season and started in 10 of them. She contributed 13 goals and five assists, which ranked sixth and seventh on the team. Johnson also picked up the third-most draw controls on the team with 40. Davis returns after suffering an ACL tear in the final game of the 2007 season. The Skaneateles, N.Y., native has been a force to be reckoned with since the day she stepped on campus, playing in all 41 games and starting in 38 the past two seasons. Davis was a third team All-America choice in 2007 and was in the top five on the team in goals, assists, points and draw controls. Showing why she is the consummate midfielder with strong defensive play, she led the team in ground balls with 33 and was second in caused turnovers with 27. Allie broke into the starting line up mid-season and never left, says Kimel. Her ability to win the draw, battle between the 30 s for loose balls and be a strong connection in our midfield was integral to our success in After successful reconstruction of her left ankle I am looking forward seeing Allie build on her successful junior year and become an even bigger force in the midfield for us. Carolyn developed into our all-around most valuable midfielder in her sophomore season, says Kimel. She was a major scoring threat on offense and was able to handle the toughest defensive match ups as well. This season, we expect her to bounce back from knee surgery in the off-season and pick up where she left off last season. Juniors Jess Adam and sophomores Christie Barnes, Lindsay Gilbride and Danielle Kachulis all had solid years in 2007 and hope to step up their game this season. Adam saw action in all 20 games while Barnes played in 17. Kachulis made appearances in each game and started two matches while Gilbride was a consistent starter before an injury hampered her late in the season. The quartet combined for 33 goals, 10 assists, 4 ground balls, 28 draw controls and 32 caused turnovers. Junior Jessica McBride and sophomore Jillian Heinz will seek more playing time in 2008 after strong offseasons. Jess Adam continues to grow and impress our coaching staff all over the field, says Kimel. Her game sense and ability to communicate are essential to the success of our team. Jess will also be counted on to be a vocal leader for us on the field. 22 four Final Fours - 10 Straight NCAA tournament Appearances

3 2008 SEASON OUTLOOK for eight starts last season when Ferguson and Pastrana were injured and filled their roles well. The trio cumulatively had 18 ground balls, eight caused turnovers and six draw controls. Sarah [Kirchhofer] had a breakthrough season in 2007, says Kimel. She balances tremendous athleticism and defensive instinct she is one of our most valuable assets at this end of the field. Abigail and Sara [Giedgowd] both were steady contributors in They both bring a great defensive game sense and an ability to communicate and direct the unit. I expect both of them to play and make significant contributions this season. Goalie Danielle Kachulis The Blue Devils will have junior Kim Imbesi and senior Regan Bosch minding the net for the second consecutive season. Imbesi started all 20 games in 2007 and earned a spot on the NCAA All-Tournament team after making 1 saves in the national semifinals. Her 109:29 minutes was the fifth-most ever in a season for a Blue Devil and her 154 saves ranked sixth. Imbesi posted a goals against average and a.449 save percentage on the season. Bosch played in seven contests, logged 112:18 and registered an 8.55 goals against average. Her.543 save percentage was the fifth-best in Duke history and her.487 career save percentage ranks fourth all-time. Danielle had a great freshman season in As the fastest player on our team, Danielle was a major force in our transition game both bringing the ball up field and slowing the ball down on defense. She has worked tirelessly in the off-season to improve her overall game and become a complete player. I could not have been more pleased with the development of both Kim and Regan last season, says Kimel. They improved tremendously over the course of 2007 and made big contributions in big games. While Kim was our starter for most of the season, I expect Regan to continue pushing her and earning potential opportunities to compete along the way. Lindsay Gilbride and Christie Barnes both saw significant time last season in the midfield. We look forward to them taking big steps forward in their sophomore years. Schedule Three players who will look to make contributions early in their collegiate careers are the talented trio of freshmen Sarah Bullard, Emma Hamm and Caroline Spearman. Bullard and Hamm were members of the world champion U.S. under-19 team this past summer and all three were high school All-America selections. Sarah and Emma s experience with the U.S. U-19 World Cup team was an incredible one that really helped make their transition to the college game seamless, says Kimel. They are both gifted athletes and have the ability to make big plays between the 30 s and at the offensive and defensive ends of the field. I am very excited about the prospect of our midfield group this season, says Kimel. We return starters in Allie, Carolyn and Lindsay and we expect Jess Adam, Christie Barnes, Danielle Kachulis to play more significant roles in Add in Jessica McBride, Jillian Heinz, Sarah Bullard, Emma Hamm and Caroline Spearman and we expect to be the deepest and most athletic midfield group in the history of Duke women s lacrosse. Defense This will mark the first year in recent memory that the defense returns mostly intact, with only Meghan Ferguson having graduated. Filling the leadership role voided by Ferguson will be senior Aiyana Newton and senior captain Abigail Meyer, with Newton and juniors Christina Germinario and Kimberly Pastrana as the returning starters. The unit started out the season with a new goalie behind them for the first time in four years and improved steadily throughout its 20 games. It is now arguably the most experienced position for the Blue Devils, with four seniors and two juniors. Newton will be starting in the back for the third straight year, and has made 41 straight starts in the Duke uniform. She had 1 draw controls, 15 ground balls and five caused turnovers last season. Newton was usually the Duke defender matched up with the opposition s top scorer, which included a dominating performance over NCAA points-scoring leader Mary Key of Johns Hopkins in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. Germinario should continue to make a big impact after starting all 20 games last year. She tied for second on the team with 30 ground balls and was third with 18 caused turnovers. Pastrana was a big factor and starter on the defense and as a defensive midfielder until a torn ACL sidelined her late in the season. Duke will once again face one of the toughest schedules in women s lacrosse this season. The Blue Devils will play five of the other nine teams ranked in the preseason top 10 and 11 ranked teams in all.* The season begins with a home game against No. 1 Denver on Feb. 15. The team then travels to Dallas, Texas for a neutral site match at Southern Methodist University against Stanford on Feb. 17. On Feb. 22 and 24, Duke makes a swing through Virginia to play No. 20 Richmond and William & Mary. The Blue Devils ACC opener is versus No. 4 Maryland on March 1. Duke hits the road to face No. 7 Princeton on March 8. Following that game the Blue Devils play seven straight games in the state of North Carolina, including six at home. Vermont and No. 11 Georgetown visit on March 11 and 15 before Duke heads to Chapel Hill to take on archrival and No. 8 North Carolina on March 22. No. 2 Virginia, No. 12 Notre Dame and No. 1 Northwestern all come calling to Koskinen Stadium in a span of nine days beginning on March 29. That will complete a stretch of five straight games against teams ranked in the top 12 for Duke. ACC foe Boston College is the Blue Devils final regular season home opponent on April 12. Duke plays at Virginia Tech on April 14 and at No. 13 Vanderbilt on April 20. The ACC Tournament will be held from April at Virginia s Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. The final regular season game of the year will be on May 4 at No. 18 Dartmouth. If Duke makes the NCAA Tournament for the 11th year in a row, it will be played from May 11-25, with the first two rounds being held at the higher seed s home field and the Final Four taking place at Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md. We have always taken enormous pride in the quality and competitiveness of our schedule, and 2008 is no different, says Kimel. My staff, the team and I look forward to preparing for the challenges we will face both in conference play and against our traditional rivals. *Official rankings taken from the Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Poll Sara Giedgowd Yani [Aiyana Newton] is now the senior leader of our defensive unit and is well-seasoned and ready to serve that role, says Kimel. In 2007, she saw every top match up we faced and now is even more primed to step into the role of being our leader and top match-up defender. Christina was a steady presence in our defensive unit last season and she is ready to step in and have a breakthrough year. Her work ethic coupled with her innate defensive abilities makes her one of our best pure defenders. Looking to step up into even more of a significant role will be Meyer, senior Sarah Kirchhofer and sophomore Sara Giedgowd. The trio combined 3 3

4 Head Coach Kerstin Kimel Head Coach Kerstin Manning Kimel came to Duke in 199 with the dream of creating a national championship caliber team with a reputation for winning and a commitment to excellence. After 12 seasons and a record, she has done just that. In just three years, Kimel took the Blue Devils to the NCAA Tournament and now has been to 10 straight with four national semifinal appearances. Duke is widely considered as one of the top women s lacrosse programs in the nation. The 2007 season was another in a string of successful campaigns throughout Kimel s career. Duke 10 of their first 11 contests and finished the regular season They finished with a 4-1 mark in the ACC, good for a tie for first place.
