NORTHWESTERN SETTING THE SCENE Ninth-ranked Duke (9-3, 2-3 ACC) continues a threegame road swing Friday, Apr. 12 with a visit to No. 4 Northwestern at 7 p.m. CST in Evanston, Ill. The Blue Devils are 3-2 this spring against ranked opponents and 3-2 overall in road contests following a 10-9 loss to Boston College Apr. 6 in Newton, Mass. The Wildcats enter the matchup on a nine-game win streak and own a ledger of 11-1 after topping Virginia, 11-6, on Apr. 7. THE SERIES HISTORY Friday night s contest marks the 13th meeting between Duke and Northwestern with the Wildcats leading the all-time series by a 10-2 margin. Alyssa Leonard ranks second in the nation with 83 draw controls in 12 contests for an average of 6.92 per game... As a team, Northwestern is sixth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing opponents just 7.50 goals per game... Defender Gabriella Flibotte is tied for fifth in the country with 2.50 caused turnovers per outing... SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS Duke fell three spots to No. 9 in the IWLCA rankings following a narrow 10-9 loss on the road to Boston College Apr The Blue Devils now rank fourth in the ACC standings with a conference ledger of 2-3 and an overall record of Sophomore Kerrin Maurer leads the team in points (46) and assists (21) while senior Makenzie Hommel has scored a team-high 33 goals... Maurer is second in the league in assists per game (1.75) and fourth in points per game (3.83)... Junior Taylor Virden leads Duke and the ACC with 24 ground balls and moved into ninth place on the Blue Devils all-time draw controls chart with 106 for her career... LAST TIME OUT Freshman Kelci Smesko netted three goals and senior Makenzie Hommel added two, but the sixth-ranked Blue Devils came up short in a 10-9 road loss to Boston College Apr The Eagles outshot Duke, 20-13, and won the draw by a 14-7 margin while limiting the Blue Devils to just one free position goal on the afternoon... Hommel s second score of the day pulled Duke back within one with 3:44 remaining but Boston College won the ensuing draw and was able to fend off the Blue Devil defense the rest of the way... Duke also ranked among the top 20 teams in the country in scoring offense (16th, gpg), scoring defense (19th, 8.75 gapg) and in scoring margin (15th, 4.67). BALANCED ATTACK Fourteen different Blue Devils have scored a goal and 12 players have notched at least one assist through 11 games this season... Seven Blue Devils have also recorded hat tricks this spring, led by senior Makenzie Hommel with seven... In a 23-0 shutout of Presbyterian on Feb. 10, 13 different Duke players found the back of the net. DEVILISH ON DEFENSE The Blue Devils defense ranks third in the ACC and 19th nationally, allowing opponents just 8.75 goals per game... Duke has limited opponents to single-digit scoring six times this season, including in a three-game span against Jacksonville (March 13), Dartmouth (March 17) and Virginia (March 23)... The team collected the second shutout in program history and first since the 1998 season in a 23-0 victory over Presbyterian (Feb. 10)... 6 EDUCATION University of Maryland 93 PLAYING CAREER University of Maryland ( ) U.S. Elite Team ( ) KERSTIN KIMEL HEAD COACH 19TH SEASON 18TH SEASON AT DUKE The only head coach in Duke women s lacrosse history, Kerstin Manning Kimel has led the program from its inception in 1996, molding the Blue Devils into one of the nation s elite teams. In Kimel s 17 seasons at the helm of Duke women s lacrosse, she has compiled a record, leading the Blue Devils to six national semifinals, four ACC regular season titles, an ACC Tournament Championship and 15 consecutive NCAA Tournaments - the third longest current streak in the nation. A five-time ACC Coach of the Year, Kimel has also coached 33 All-America selections, 44 all-region honorees and 37 All-ACC picks. In addition, four of her former players were named to the 2009 U.S. National Team, representing the United States at the World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic. The Blue Devils have achieved equal success in the classroom during Kimel s tenure, collecting 19 Academic All-America accolades since Prior her arrival at Duke, Kimel was the head coach at Davidson College, leading the newly-created Wildcats program to a 4-8 record in 1994 as one of the nation s youngest head coaches in her first and only season at Davidson. Kimel was no stranger to NCAA Division I women s lacrosse before her time at Davidson, having played at the University of Maryland from During her career, she led the Terrapins to four consecutive national semifinal appearances and the 1992 NCAA National Championship. The Havertown, Pa., native was a two-time All-America selection and the 1993 NCAA National Defensive Player of the Year, appearing in Sports Illustrated s Faces in the Crowd. Kimel graduated from Maryland in 1993 with a bachelor s degree in speech communications. Prior to her collegiate career, Kimel was a standout at Haverford High School, earning first team All-Central League, All-Delaware County and USWLA All-America honors. Her numerous accomplishments have landed her in both the Haverford Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame - Delaware County. Kimel has also been a prominent figure on the international level as a member of the U.S. Elite Team from and as an alternate for the U.S. national team that captured a gold medal at the 1993 World Cup. In addition, Kimel served as chair of the IWLCA Growth Committee from and as Chair of the NCAA South Region Selection Committee. From , she was on the selection committee for the U.S. Elite/ Development squads, also working as an assistant coach for the U.S. Development squad from Kimel has also worked as Chair of the IWLCA/USL Division I All-America committee and completed a four-year term as a member of the NCAA Division I Women s Lacrosse Committee in In 2006, she became co-chair of the IWLCA External Relations Committee and served on the Tewaaraton award selection committee in During the summer of 2008, Kimel was elected to the IWLCA Board of Directors and acts as a Division I representative. Kimel s family tree includes many outstanding athletes, beginning with her father, Mike Manning, who played basketball at West Chester University, and her mother, Sallie Manning, who was a member of the tennis and field hockey squads at West Chester. Both her brother, Mike, and husband, Jack, played baseball at Western Carolina before moving on to play for the Texas Rangers organization, while her sister, Lindsay, played lacrosse at James Madison University and served as an assistant coach for the 2003 and 2007 World Champion U.S. under-19 teams. Her extended family also includes three collegiate basketball players - uncles Ed (Villanova) and Chris Manning (Philadelphia College of Textile) and cousin Alicia Manning (Lafayette) - one collegiate swimmer - uncle John Manning (Villanova) - two baseball players - cousins Brian Manning (Villanova) and Pat Manning (Atlanta Braves minor league) - and one hockey standout - brother-in-law Matt Mulhern (Boston College).
