2 BACK TO DEFEND A B1G TITLE For the second straight year, the Nittany Lions are the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. The Nittany Lions won the inaugural crown. The Nittany Lions await the winner of third-seeded Northwestern and No. 6 seed Michigan. Last year, Penn State defeated the similarly seeded Wildcats, 13-10, in the semifinals. SIX LIONS GARNER ALL-BIG TEN HONORS The 2016 All-Big Ten selections were announced on Wednesday morning and Penn State garnered six spots. Madison Cyr and Abby Smucker became twotime All-Big Ten honorees and were both unanimous selections. Cyr and Smucker were joined by Madison Carter, Jenna Mosketti, Steph Lazo and Katie O Donnell. Penn State and Maryland each had six players honored. The six all-conference honors match that of the 2003 team when Penn State had six All-ALC selections. CYR GETTING IT DONE ON BOTH SIDES Penn State senior midfielder Madison Cyr leads the team in goals (47), points (63), shots (105), ground balls (28) and caused turnovers (30). Cyr ranks second in the Big Ten in goals per game and ranks 17th nationally. Cyr s 1.88 caused turnovers per game are second in the conference only to twotime Tewaaraton Award winner Taylor Cummings of Maryland. Cyr is 22nd nationally. Cyr has scored in every game this season and is currently on a 25-game scoring streak dating back to last year. This season, Cyr has tallied at least two points in every game and has 10 hat tricks. Cyr s two goals vs. UMD brought her career total to 144 which has her in sole possession of 8th all-time at Penn State. Her three points vs. UMD brought her career total to 182, good for 15th all-time at Penn State. Cyr s 3.94 points per game rank 18th nationally. CYR NAMED A TEWAARATON NOMINEE Penn State senior standout Madison Cyr was named a nominee for the Tewaaraton Award as one of the top 25 players in college lacrosse on Friday night, April 29. Cyr and the other 24 women s nominees will be whittled down to a list of five finalists with their male counterparts on May 12. The 16th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held June 2 in Washington, D.C. Cyr is a first-time nominee and represents the fifth Nittany Lion woman to be among the top 25 nominees. Cyr represents the fourth occasion an athlete under head coach Missy Doherty s tutelage as a nominee joining Dana Cahill (2012) and Maggie McCormick (2013, 2015). LAZO PASSING THE ROCK Junior attack Steph Lazo is leading the Big Ten in assists per game (1.88) and has 30 for the season through 16 games. Lazo had nine assists all of last season. Lazo ranks 16th nationally in assists per game (1.88) and 41st in points per game (3.56). NITTANY LIONS NEARLY UPSET NO. 1 TERPS The 11th-ranked Nittany Lions looked to be the first team to beat top-ranked Maryland, but a late threegoal run by the Terps produced a 10-9 loss for the Lions Thursday night, April 28. Steph Lazo had a five-point night in Penn State s attempt to upstage the undefeated Terrapins. By virtue of its win, Maryland (17-0, 5-0 Big Ten) denied Penn State s (11-5, 3-2 Big Ten) bid to share the Big Ten title. In cage, Emi Smith was spectacular, saving 10 Terrapin effort, while Penn State withstood Maryland s aggressive ride, clearing 15-of-16 times. Penn State turned the ball over just nine times on a cold, rainy night. In all, seven Nittany Lions contributed to the scoring effort with two earning multi-goal games: Madison Cyr and Lazo. Cyr ended with three points on two goals and an assist while scooping two ground balls, a draw control and causing two turnovers. The Nittany Lions used a 5-1 run to take an 8-7 lead with 10:27 to play, giving Maryland its latest deficit of the season, which lasted to the 6:45 mark. SCORE A GOAL, CONTROL THE BALL Penn State has ranked among the top 15 teams all season in goals per game and draw controls. PSU averages goals per game, which is 11th best in the nation, while pulling down draws a game, which ranks seventh nationally. PSU is also 11th in the country in caused turnovers per game (10.81). Senior goalkeeper Emi Smith, senior midfielder/attack Jenna Mosketti and junior midfielder Abby Smucker were among the 50 watch list candidates. ABOUT THE WILDCATS The Northwestern Wildcats (8-8) again boast one of the toughest schedules in the country, having already played 12 ranked teams.
