This is Maryland s second time as the tournament s third seed (last year was the other). Maryland enter the tournament on a three-game winning streak, all against ranked opponents. Maryland senior Annie Collins became the third Terp in as many weeks to earn ACC Player of the Week honors on April 25 after her career-high seven point performance against No. 13 Syracuse on Sunday. Appelt helped ignite the UVa rally with a pair of quick scores to start the second half. The Cavs ended up with a 7-0 run that spanned the halves that proved to be the difference. Laura Warren scored the only Maryland goal in the second half. Delia Cox and Kirah Miles were named to the All-Tournament team. Cox had two goals against UVa, and Miles had 17 saves. In nine of Maryland s 10 victories, the Terps have held their opponents under the doubledigit threshold. Dating back to last season, the Terps are 0-8 when failing to score double-digits. A TALE OFTWO HALVES Whether it be a slow start and a hot finish, or a quick start before cooling off, the Terps have been completely different teams in halves of the same games this season. Against Duke and Old Dominion, Maryland managed just one goal first half goal in each game. However, the Terps outscored their opponents 18-7 in the final 30 minutes. Maryland had just six goals against Brown before exploding for 14 goals in the second frame. Against Richmond, Maryland raced out and scored 10 goals in the first half, but managed just four goals the rest of the way. The Terps fell behind 7-3 against George Mason, but exploded for six goals in the second half and got the game-winner in overtime for the win. At the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the Terps put together a great first half against Penn State (10 goals) and a great second half against Ohio State (nine goals). However, in the other halves of those games, the Terps managed just two goals against PSU and four against OSU. Maryland scored six in the first half against Georgetown, but only scored two in the second half and was held scoreless over the game s final 23 minutes. The Terps put together back-to-back complete offensive games on the road at North Carolina and at home against Syracuse. Generally, the Terps seem to be a second half team, outscoring opponents in the final 30 minutes. PLAYINGQUARTERS The final 15 minutes of the first half (the unofficial second quarter ) of the game proved to be the difference in Maryland s first game against UVa. The Hoos pivotal 7-1 run broke a 1-1 tie to a 8-2 halftime advantage for UVa. CAREERYEARS Several Terps are having the best years of their careers this season. SCOUTINGTHE TOURNAMENT Duke, the top seed in the ACC Tournament for the second straight season, went 3-1 in the league. The Blue Devils defeated Virginia, 16-12, to secure the top seed. Duke is led by Tewaaraton candidate Katie Chrest who has 54 goals and 16 assists on the year. Chrest also has 42 draw controls and is among the team s leaders in caused turnovers and ground balls. Duke is the only team other than newcomer Virginia Tech to not win the ACC Tournament. UNC is the tournament s fourth seed, despite being the only league team to defeat Duke this season. The Tar Heels lost to Virginia and Maryland this season. UNC has four players with over 20 points, led by Allison Higgins 43. Newcomer Virginia Tech is the tournament s fifth seed. The Hokies are led by one of the top freshmen in the league in Natsha Fuchs. Fuchs is among the ACC and national leaders in assists with 35. Britt Faulkner leads the team with 36 goals. SCOUTINGVIRGINIA Virginia, the defending ACC and NCAA champions, enter the tournament with a 12-3 record. The Cavs went 3-1 in ACC play, but lost the tiebreaker to Duke based on head-to-head meetings. UVa is led by Amy Appelt, who is the reigning ACC and National Player of the Year. This season, Appelt has 72 points on 42 goals and 30 assists. Tyler Leachman has taken some of the offensive burden off of Appelt scoring a team-best 47 goals this season. After those players, the offensive production drops a bit with Cary Chasney (38 points) and Kate Breslin (25 points). The Virginia defense has held 11 of its 15 opponents to single-digit scoring (including Maryland on March 8). Elizabeth Pinney leads the team with 18 caused turnovers, followed closely by Molly Urlock (16). Ginger Miles has been solid in the cage for UVa in her first season as a starter. She is among the ACC s leaders in goals-against average (7.61) and averages over eight saves per game. 2005MARYLANDwomen s lacrosse

Delia Cox and Acacia Walker each scored a hat trick, and Brooke Richards led all scorers with four points on two goals and two assists. The Spiders won the ensuing draw, but another Miles save started the Maryland offense. Cox put Maryland up 2-0 after converting on a free-position shot at 22:09. After an Ashley Friend free-position goal at 17:14, it was all Terps the rest of the first half as Maryland won 10 of the next 11 draw controls and went on a 6-0 run over the next 11 minutes to take command of the game. Greta Sommers scored a goal and two assists and shut down Georgetown's Coco Stanwick on defense, but the Hoyas managed to keep the Terps off the board in the game's final 23 minutes to complete the comeback. Sommers helped stake Maryland out to a 3-1 in the first 10 minutes of the game by leading the Terps in transition. Sommers dished two assists carrying the ball into the zone and scored on herself to give Maryland the early lead. After Annie Collins connected on a pass to Dorney to put Maryland up 4-1 at the 16:54 mark, the goalies took over the game. Georgetown's Lucy Poole broke through for the Hoyas with just over three minutes left in the first half with a freeposition goal to cut Maryland's lead to 4-2 going into the half. Maryland stretched its lead to 6-2 with a pair of goals in the first seven minutes of the second half. From there, Georgetown slowly chipped away at the Maryland lead and stymied Maryland's transition. A Maryland turnover in its on zone sparked the Georgetown momentum as Lauren Redler picked off an errant Terp pass and drove to the cage uncontested for the score. The Hoyas won the ensuing draw and Poole cut the Maryland lead to 6-4 with an unassisted goal at 18:01. The Terps again failed to control the draw, and after a restart behind the cage on a missed free-position shot by Allison Chambers, Catherine Elbe found Chambers off the re-start for the score. The Hoyas tied the game at 6-6 after Laryn Bernier used a strong one-on-one move to get past her defender and finish. Stanwick's lone goal of the game turned out to be the game-winner just 47 seconds after the Bernier tied the game.
