8 2003 In Review So many words could be used to describe the incredible, emotional whirlwind that was Loyola lacrosse in If you could only use one word, however, to sum up what the season was all about you would have to use together. Greyhounds won together, they lost together, they cried together, even laughed together and most importantly - stayed together through the end. Together was what the Greyhounds chanted before and after every game and every practice. One word together. And with that motto, Loyola marched deep into the postseason, breaking record after record, having itself the best season in school history.. it couldn t have come at a better time. Under the inspirational direction of Head Coach Diane Geppi-Aikens, the Hounds landed their first ever No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament and truly had a season to remember. Loyola finished the year with a teamrecord 17 wins and only two losses. Intercollegiate Women s Lacrosse Coaches Association ranked the squad number one in the nation in eight of its 10 weekly polls. defense allowed the fewest goals of any team in the country. And the national media was there to see it Kate Hardesty 34 all unfold. NBC, ABC, CBS and ESPN all followed the Greyhounds and their heart-felt, tear-jerking story. But what mattered most to the members of the 2003 squad was being on that field together, everyday, with their courageous head coach. season opened at Curley Field in the freezing cold with a match-up against the Retrievers of UMBC, coached by former Greyhound Monica Yeakel. Talia Shacklock started things off quickly for the Greyhounds with two goals in the first five minutes of play. UMBC s Jen Dragoni responded with a goal of her own before the Greyhounds went on a seven-goal run to seal the victory. Rachel Shuck led Loyola in scoring with four goals in a 16-4 win. Tarheels of North Carolina visited the still frigid Curley Field later that week, and the Greyhounds kept them in the cold by scoring all 10 of their goals even before UNC was able to find the scoreboard. Suzanne Eyler led the charge Marianne Gioffre with her four goals while Shuck added three as well as an assist en route to a 10-4 final score. An early-season showdown with defending national champion and top-ranked Princeton would follow. Tigers controlled the tempo early, taking a 4-2 halftime lead, before Loyola took over. Greyhounds scored three unanswered goals in the second half to gain a 5-4 lead with goals from Shacklock, Eyler and freshman Sydney Greene. Whitney Miller scored the equalizer before Eyler and Greene nabbed two more goals for a 7-5 Loyola lead. Princeton would not go quietly, and with two goals in the final 90 seconds of regulation, overtime would be needed to decide this classic. Greene scored the first overtime goal off an assist from Shuck only 58 seconds into the period. Princeton s All-America resa Sherry evened the score in the second overtime period to force sudden death. That s when Shuck, from behind the net, found Shacklock for the

9 game-winner. Loyola was for real and a 9-8 win over defending champion Princeton proved that to everyone. Greyhound goalies made an astounding 16 saves against the Tigers, with Kim Lawton making 10 in the first half and Cindy Nicolaus six in the second half and overtime periods. With the win over Princeton, the Greyhounds earned the No. 1 spot in the IWLCA poll and traveled to the University of Delaware for a meeting with the Blue Hens. Delaware kept pace with Loyola early, but Shuck broke the flood gates open, starting a five-goal rally to put Loyola up 8-2. Blue Hens made a run in the closing minutes of play but the Greyhounds held on to win, 12-8, and retain their No. 1 ranking. It was up the road to Towson for the first game at Towson Stadium and the Tigers put up a fight. Greyhounds took a 5-2 lead behind a four-goal spurt by Suzanne Eyler in the first half. teams traded goals until Towson finished out the scoring with three goals in the last 23 minutes of play for a 9-8 final score. Greyhounds were still undefeated. Against Boston University, Greene exploded with the score tied at 1-1 with four of her six goals on the day. In less than eight minutes Greene changed the score to 5-1 before giving the Terriers another chance. She went on to score her last two goals of the day in the first minutes of the second half. BU tallied three more goals before Stephanie Walker closed out the scoring for a 9-5 Loyola win. With six straight wins to open the season, a confident Loyola team moved on to face Pennsylvania. Greene opened the scoring within Christy McNew four minutes of play before Walker tallied two of her career-high five goals for a 3-0 Loyola lead. Lindsey Cassidy got the Quakers on the board with a free-position goal before the Greyhounds went on a four-goal run with scores from Jen Schuerholz, Walker, Eyler and Shuck. Penn closed out the first half with another goal but the Hounds still held a 7-2 advantage at the break. Walker started another Greyhound run in the first 20 seconds of the second half and the Quakes could not recover, scoring just one more goal before Shuck and Walker finished off a 12-3 win for Loyola In Review Ready for another challenge, Loyola visited James Madison, another ranked program. Dukes showed little resistance, however, as the Green and Grey ran away with a 15-3 win, outscoring JMU 8-1 in the first and 7-2 in the second half of play. Greene had another stellar outing, opening play with a goal less than four minutes in and going on to score four more on the night. Eyler added four goals while the Loyola s defense stifled the Dukes with 15 caused turnovers and 42 groundballs. Greyhounds returned to Curley Field for a meeting with long-time rival George Mason. GMU scored the first goal of the game only 53 seconds in. Loyola was not fazed at all. Hounds ran up eight straight goals over the next 15 minutes to put the game away. Shacklock led the team this time with four goals in the 14-5 win, while Eyler had another multiple-goal game with three goals. Shuck added three assists, as well as a goal and the defensive unit had another strong performance with 12 caused turnovers and 39 groundballs. Greyhound coach Geppi- Aikens saw one of her dreams come alive in Loyola s next game against Penn State at Curley Field. It was the first televised game for the Loyola College women s lacrosse program and the Greyhounds and Nittany Lions gave Jen Albright the Baltimore viewing audience one of college lacrosse s best games of the season with a thrilling win over the Lions. Loyola started the scoring with goals from Shacklock and Shuck, before Penn State s Shari Maslin got a shot past Lawton in the Loyola cage. Greyhounds added two more goals, one on a free position from Walker and another from Eyler for a 4-1 cushion. PSU s Katie Jeschke nabbed another goal for the Nittany Lions 10 minutes into the contest before Eyler and Shuck each scored goals for a 6-2 lead. Penn State would fight back though, and the Nittany Lions scored three goals in three minutes to pull within one of the Greyhounds. two teams continued to battle back

10 and forth before Colleen O Hara scored two goals in the last 22 seconds of the first half for a 10-9 halftime score. Nittany Lions quickly evened out the score at less than three minutes into the second half. Loyola scored five of the next six goals in an attempt to put the game away. Penn State scored the final three goals but the Greyhounds controlled the tempo and played gritty defense in the last minutes of play for their ninth straight victory. In Loyola s next game against Hoftra, defensive specialist Kristi Korrow earned the spotlight, scoring a careerhigh four goals in Loyola s 10 th Caroline Cooper win. Hounds earned a comfortable lead early, owning the game at 6-0 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Eyler tallied three of the five goals in the run and Korrow scored three of Loyola s second-half goals. Eyler tied Korrow with four goals on the day and Shuck was credited with four assists. Greyhounds looked unstoppable at this points and total domination of William & Mary, the team s next opponent, showed that the squad was clicking on all cylinders. Seven Greyhounds scored goals as Loyola opened up a 12-0 lead and ran away with a 12-2 win. Eyler tallied a game-high three goals; Walker, Shacklock and Katie Guarino each added two and Jaclyn Borrone and Susan Tyrrell each scored one goal. Shuck added two more assists found herself among the nation s assists leaders at game s end. Loyola s next two games would take them to opposite sides of the country, Stanford and Syracuse. Greyhounds made their West Coast trip over the Easter break to visit the Cardinal. Playing in its first game on grass all season, Loyola started off slowly but picked up the pace midway through the first half with two quick goals, one from Schuerholz and another from Eyler. Loyola offense put together yet another run, scoring seven goals before Stanford tallied the last two of the game for a 9-4 final. Eyler and Walker each ended the game with two goals 36 while Shuck, Greene, Shacklock, Schuerholz and Tyrrell all scored one. Nicolaus tied her career-high for saves with 10, all in the second half, while Lawton stopped seven shots in the first half. Greyhounds visited the Carrier Dome next, with the hope of returning for the national semifinals that May. It was the first meeting between the two teams and the first chance for sisters Stephanie and Jacquelyn Walker to go against each other on the lacrosse field. Stephanie showed a lot of poise, scoring the first goal of the game just over five minutes into the Sara Shoaf contest. Loyola gained a three-goal lead with four goals in less than four minutes from four different players. Greene, Shuck, Shacklock and Eyler each scored to give Loyola a 5-2 lead. Syracuse added another goal before the Greyhounds closed out the first half with more goals from Eyler and Shacklock, and the first of three from Jackie Borrone. Orangewomen nabbed the first goal of the second half to pull within 8-4 before Borrone continued her own run with two more goals to bring the Loyola lead up to Syracuse tried Susan Tyrell

11 to answer Borrone s efforts with Leigh-Ann Zimmer s freeposition goals at the 25-minute mark. Walker then added her second goal, Eyler s chipped in with her third on the day and Shuck scored twice. Orangewomen made a fight in the last eight minutes of play, outscoring the Greyhounds 5-1, but in the end, Loyola was victorious again, winning Against Virginia, Loyola held a 9-7 lead with just 1:08 seconds left to play before the Cavaliers made a miraculous comeback. Lauren Aumiller scored to bring UVA within one. Cavs won the draw and Aumiller scored again to tie the game. With just five seconds remaining, Cary Chasney ended Loyola s dream of an undefeated season with a game-winning goal. Although an undefeated season was out of the picture, the Greyhounds were motivated and at the end of the day, the Virginia loss would prove to be a mere speed bump on the road to the Final Four. Greyhounds picked themselves up quickly and traveled to College Park, where they met Maryland in front of one of the largest crowds of the season. Suzanne Eyler Greyhounds made their objective clear early and took a 3-0 lead in the first seven minutes of play on goals from Susan Tyrrell, Eyler and Shacklock, however, the Terps were not going to make it easy on the Hounds. Maryland went on a 4-0 run to take a 4-3 lead before Borrone evened out the score with just four minutes remaining in the half. Maryland added a free position with just three seconds remaining in the first half for a 5-4 lead. Terps increased their lead again with a goal less than a minute into the second half. Walker then scored one for the Greyhounds to cut the lead to one. Maryland continued its offensive threats with two more goals the last 13 minutes of play - it was all Loyola after that. Eyler scored three goals and Schuerholz added one for the Greyhounds to earn a come-from-behind victory of their own, defeating Maryland for just the third time in team history, ending the regular season with an inspired 15-1 record. victory over Maryland earned Loyola the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, its first ever. Local opponent UMBC was first on the postseason slate. offensive duo of Eyler and Shuck shined, combining for 13 points. Eyler scored four goals and added an assist while Shuck tallied a career-high six assists and scoring two goals of her own in the 18-3 victory over the Retrievers. Yale came next. After defeating Syracuse, the Bulldogs seemed confident but could not compete with the heart and determination of the Greyhounds. Eyler and Shuck did it again with Eyler scoring four more goals and Shuck dishing out four assists and scoring two goals of her own. Loyola won game 13-7 and earned an invitation back to the Carrier Dome. It seemed like no one could stop the Loyola offense or compete with the defense. That was until Princeton in the national semifinals. Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 10 minutes of play. Eyler piloted her team with the first Loyola goal at 14:15 on a free-position opportunity. Defensive midfielder Korrow tied the score with her breakaway unassisted goal at 19:59. Neither team would break the 2-2 score going into halftime. Eyler gave the Greyhounds their only lead of the game by earning a freeposition at 33:17. Princeton s Elizabeth Pillion would take two free-position goals of her own giving the Tigers a 4-3 lead by 47:27. resa Sherry went on to add Princeton s insurance goal at 58:38. Loyola took just eight shots, scoring three goals. Princeton went on to win 5-3 But again, Loyola didn t seem fazed. y huddled up and chanted Together! one last time, they congratulated their opponents, kissed their coach, collected their trophy and returned to the locker room. ir season was over but they had each other.
