4 CAROLINA WOMEN S LACROSSE: 2006 PREVIEW North Carolina head coach Jenny Levy sat down in the fall of 2005 to discuss her team s outlook for the 2006 campaign. The following are excerpts from that conversation. Jenn Cook On the experience of a veteran 2006 team We did not feel that we played very well in the NCAA quarterfinal against Duke which has spurred this team over the summer. Most of our team got to school a week early just to get together, fraternize and do a little team-building. The direction of the team is really going to be steered by the seniors and what they want to accomplish this year. They want to lead us further into the postseason. We only have three seniors this year, Lindsey Stover, Stephanie Scurachio and Kristen Tadlock. Our junior class has been a mainstay on our field since their freshmen year, playing major roles in big games. They are as seasoned as they come and will combine with the seniors to lead this team. Due to our injuries to upperclassmen last year, our current sophomores also start this year with a lot of big game experience under their belts, which can only help us this year. Our freshman class has the ability to push the starters and compete for significant playing time. Our depth is the best it has been in the history of our program due to changes in the number of recruited freshmen that we can admit. This change will have an enormous impact on our program this year and in the future because it brings our number of recruited athletes even with our competitors. With more veteran presence on the field, we are looking to improve on things that were sloppy last season like ball possession, scoring goals, pushing tempo and getting off to quicker starts in games. Our 2006 team has good leadership, good athletes and a workmanship attitude, and certainly has the potential to make some waves this season. With veteran players and a great base of experience returning, we feel like we can really challenge this team to reach an extremely high level of play. On the Goalkeepers Kristen Hordy is back as a third-year starter, and I know she worked hard on her game this summer. She s focused on becoming a leader in the backfield and taking her game to the next level. She started last season with a bang, recording seven games above a 65 percent save average and 10 games above 60 percent. At the top of her game, Hordy can be the best goalkeeper in the country. On the Defenders In front of Hordy, there is not only a lot of experience returning, but a lot of tough and committed kids. The combination of players is not set but we have options; Morgan Russell did a great job of communicating and organizing the defense last year. We also have Julie Gladchuk returning. Last summer, she was injured but this summer she has been healthy and really working on improving her play. Additionally, Lindsey Stover, our senior captain, returns healthy and is the best player/coach I have ever had in our program. Also in the backfield, Britta Williams saw the field a lot last year and Jamie Hanssen looked good in the preseason last year. With a year under their belt, I think they both will contribute more this year. On the Midfielders Jenn Cook is a defensive midfielder who is going to anchor things for us. She was named second-team All-America and had a phenomenal sophomore year. She is an intense kid and a big-time team player. She will not have Gina Allen [lost to graduation] there next to her, but we feel like we have a lot of options. Jess Allen, Erica LaGrow and Katie Brooks all played a lot of minutes as middies last year. Jess is a great defender with good instincts and offensively she can not be underestimated or left alone. Katie Brooks and Erica LaGrow came in last year as freshmen and, because of the injuries to our junior middies, were expected to play major roles. Both are strong and fast with the ability to defend and produce on the offensive end. Last year they combined for 7 of our 12 goals in our regular season win against Duke, we are looking forward to more of that this year! Kelly Taylor is a freshman who possibly may contribute in the midfield. She used to be a world-class competitive skier and won championships in the Super G and Downhill but decided she wanted to tackle the challenges of lacrosse. Another freshmen middie who could contribute immediately is PAGE 4: 2006 CAROLINA WOMEN S LACROSSE MEDIA GUIDE Karen Jonas Karen Jonas Christina Juras Stephanie Scurachio Brooke Dieringer Amber Falcone. Her background is in soccer, so she s extremely aggressive with great feet. Both Taylor and Falcone already have college strength and will not back down to competition. Also returning in the midfield are Brooke Dieringer and Melissa McCarthy, who we expect to be healthy after sitting out the 2005 season with torn ACLs. They have both been important cogs for us in the past and it hurt us not having them last year. Christina Juras and Kelly Renzi are back in the offensive part of the midfield. Christina is fast, athletic, and so creative on the offensive end that she s completely capable of dominating the midfield. Kelly Renzi has really worked hard on her defense, but I also look for her to score a lot more goals this season. The other middie who returns who we anticipate contributing is Julia Ryan. She is strong and tall with quick hands. She s going to be a force for us at some point in the future, and that could start this year. Freshman Chelsea Parks has great size, can score and has great vision that is already an asset. On the Attackers We return Steph Scurachio, who did a great job for us last year. She is strong and smart, and with the captainship this year she will take control of the offensive unit. Meg Freshwater is a clutch player who scored some big goals for us last year, including game winners against Loyola and Duke. Chrissy Rude gives us a big lefty presence. She can be very hard to stop when she goes hard to the cage. Lindsay Higgins underwent ankle surgery this summer. Her presence, toughness and leadership on field will impact our team as she gets back into action.
