The two parties signed a new 10-year contract in May 2009 for Nike to continue as the exclusive supplier of athletic footwear, apparel and accessories. Nike will provide the athletic department with shoes, uniforms, coaching gear, balls and other equipment. Nike also gave the University $2 million for the Chancellor s Academic Enhancement Fund to support faculty. Levy enters the 2017 season with a career record of , including in ACC play. She has led the Tar Heels to nine appearances in the NCAA Tournament semifinals, including six in the last eight years. Her 29 NCAA Tournament wins are fourth in NCAA history. Levy is the fourth coach in women s lacrosse history to win an NCAA championship as a player (with Virginia in 1991) and as a head coach. She is the eighth coach to win multiple NCAA titles. In 2016, UNC set a school record for most wins (20) and fewest losses (two) in a season, went 7-0 to win the ACC regular season and won the second ACC Tournament and NCAA Tournament titles in program history. The Tar Heels also won a program-record 17 games in a row to close the season. Levy earned National Coach of the Year honors after the season. In 2013, Carolina beat defending national champion Northwestern in an NCAA semifinal, then bested top-ranked Maryland in three overtimes for the title in one of the most thrilling games in the sport s history. She earned nationalcoach-of-the-year honors from Inside Lacrosse, the IWLCA and Lacrosse Magazine. She has been a mainstay on various NCAA, IWLCA and US Lacrosse national committees. She also is a fourtime ACC Coach of the Year. 18 Carolina Lacrosse Staff PHIL BARNES ASSISTANT COACH RECRUITING COORDINATOR 13TH SEASON AT CAROLINA ASSUMPTION 98 One of the nation s most experienced assistant coaches and a keen-eyed recruiter, Phil Barnes has been a key part of Carolina s women s lacrosse success since In November 2012, the IWLCA named Barnes its assistant coach of the year. On the field, Barnes works with the Tar Heel defense and goalkeepers, while also heading up the program s recruiting efforts. Barnes defensive tutelage has paid off for the Tar Heels. In 2009, Logan Ripley earned National Goalkeeper of the Year honors and Amber Falcone was named the National Defender of the Year. Jen Russell was named National Defender of the Year in Two of the 2017 U.S. World Cup team are Tar Heel defenders in Kristen Carr ( 10) and Jen Russell ( 10). Barnes is a former head coach at Holy Cross and the University of Massachusetts who also has coached prep lacrosse. He was the head coach at UMass for three seasons ( ), capturing the Atlantic 10 regular-season and tournament championships and leading the nation in scoring defense in Barnes was an assistant coach at UMass during the 1998 and 99 seasons prior to taking over as head coach. He was also the head coach at the College of the Holy Cross during the 1996 and 1997 seasons, earning Patriot League Coach-of-the-Year honors in 96. Barnes earned a B.A. in history from Assumption College in He is a native of Milford, N.H. JOSH DIONNE ASSISTANT COACH FIRST SEASON AT CAROLINA duke 14 Josh Dionne (pronounced DYE-on ) joined the University of North Carolina women s lacrosse staff in July of 2016 as an assistant coach. He works with the Tar Heel offense and midfield. Dionne, a two-time All-America attacker and NCAA champion as a player at Duke, served as an assistant women s lacrosse coach at the United States Naval Academy for two seasons before coming to Chapel Hill. While on staff at Navy in 2015 and 2016 for Cindy Timchal, the winningest head coach in NCAA women s lacrosse history, Dionne coached the offensive unit and had an active role in recruiting. The Midshipmen went in his two seasons in Annapolis, including 15-5 in 2015 and 13-6 in Dionne helped Loren Generi become the first player in NCAA history to accumulate at least 300 points, 200 goals and 400 draw controls in a career. Generi compiled career highs with 86 points on 57 goals and 29 assists in 2015 under Dionne s tutelage. As a player, Dionne helped lead Duke to back-to-back NCAA championships in 2013 and He was a two-time USILA All-America attacker and a four-year letterman with the Blue Devils who tallied 162 points on 140 goals and 22 assists in 78 career games. He was selected 18th overall in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Draft by the Charlotte Hounds. Dionne began his coaching career in the summer of 2011 with the New England Select team (a squad of 14 to 16-year old players). He graduated from Duke in 2014 with a bachelor of arts degree in history.
