All times local to site. The Tar Heels and Nike The University of North Carolina has a long-term agreement with Nike, which provides UNC teams with shoes, apparel, equipment bags and other products. The contract, signed in 1994 and again in 1997, was extended for a period of eight more years beginning in July In addition to Nike products, the agreement provides $100,000 annually to the Chancellor's Academic Enhancement Fund for undergraduate teaching and $100,000 annually to the UNC athletic department to reward Olympic sport programs and coaches for academic and athletic excellence. The Tar Heel women s basketball team wears uniforms and shoes from Michael Jordan s line for Nike. Carolina was the first team to wear the Jordan women s shoes, which debuted in UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell and Carolina alum Charlotte Smith, now an assistant coach, helped introduce the shoes that fall in New York. 5 Carolina Women s Basketball Season Preview As the Tar Heels prepared for the season, head coach Sylvia Hatchell sat down with Tar Heel Monthly s Lauren Brownlow to preview the upcoming campaign. LB: How is Ivory (Latta) s recovery going? SH: It s going well. She had surgery in April. She had a severe meniscus tear, but the biggest thing was the bone bruise. She had a severe bone bruise, and bone bruises take a long time to heel. That s mainly where her pain was coming from, and that s what s taking so long. She s still not 100% yet, but she s in rehab and she s working out about every day and getting stronger and getting better. So we re expecting her to be ready to go once the season starts. She s not quite at 100% yet, but she s getting close to it. LB: How important will the seniors (Ivory Latta and Camille Little) be to this year s team? SH: They re two big seniors, two of the best players in the country, without a doubt. They re two great kids. Their leadership abilities are tremendous. They re two of the best basketball players in the country. They both have tremendous basketball mentality and knowledge. LB: You lost a few starters to graduation (La Tangela Atkinson and Jessica Sell). How do you begin to replace their contributions? SH: Every year you re going to lose great players. That s where you try to recruit to fill those voids and those gaps. We have a lot of young players that I think are going to have a tremendous opportunity to play this year. We could see great things from Rashanda McCants, Christina Dewitt, Jessica Breland, Heather Claytor, we ve got a lot of young players who I think are now going to have an opportunity and will do a nice job for us. LB: How has the team been taking the season-ending loss to Maryland (in the Final Four)? SH: We were in the Final Four, but yet we had just beaten Maryland three weeks earlier for the ACC championship. So we feel like several factors played into that game, the fact that we just played them a few weeks earlier, and also, Ivory getting hurt was a major factor. I think our players feel like, okay, we ve got another chance. Last year s over, let s learn from it and move on. And trust me, they ve learned from it. So they re just excited to play all of our games, but especially the Maryland game. LB: A lot of people like to classify your team as being athletic and fast, but don t like to give you credit for being physical and tough. How do you guys treat that assumption? SH: Well, everybody has their opinions, and that s their right. But we know what our strengths and weaknesses are. We know what makes us good. I would put my team, as far as their physical strength, I would put them up against any team in the country. I guarantee you that we d be one of the strongest teams in America. LB: What kind of players are your freshmen? SH: We only got two, but both of them are North Carolina girls. Trinity Bursey - extremely good athlete - she can grab the rim - quick, fast, athletic. We want to increase her shooting range and make her more of a perimeter player. She played inside a lot in high school. She ll give us a lot of depth to start out with, but I really think she ll get better. Jessica Breland great, great athlete. The biggest thing is just getting her work ethic a little tougher, because when you re so good in high school and you re so much better than everybody else, sometimes you just don t have to work that hard. She has the potential to be a tremendous player. But, like I said, we ve just got to get her working a little harder. I think as we get out there in compete in the conference, she ll realize that she s got to step it up a little more. It s not going to come as easily as it did in high school, but yet she has potential to be one of the best players in the country. LB: Who are some younger, lesser-known players that should have an impact this season? SH: Heather (Claytor) is a great shooter; we re just trying to get her in a little better physical condition. Rashanda McCants played some last year, but she s worked hard this summer. Christina Dewitt, Alex Miller, and LaToya Pringle - Pringle s going to be a great player for us. Our second five could probably finish at least in the middle of the conference if that was our starting team. We re excited about those kids having chances to play where our seniors have graduated, and then also just the way we play, our style of play, we play more people with trapping and pressing and going up and down the floor. They get tired, and so we substitute a little bit more. So they all know to be ready, because they could be called on at any time and expected to go at a tremendous speed. LB: How important is it to your team that you maintain that fast tempo? SH: That s just the way we play. Our players love playing like that, and I think the fans enjoy it. I know television likes it, high-scoring games. We just have a lot of fun playing that way, and that s the way we want to promote women s basketball. We just call it Carolina basketball. LB: You ve had pretty high expectations, and they re just as high now. How do you keep your team level psychologically? SH: Well, they know that everybody s after us, and every time we walk out on that court, we ve got to be at our best, because everybody s trying to get us, and we re going to have a war and a battle every time we walk out there. They all know that they ve got to have each other. They may be good as individual players, but they re never as good as an individual player as they would be with their teammates. So they know that it s all about the team and that they ve got to have each other, and it s a war and a battle every time we walk out there, so we can t let our guard down. We ve got to go out and just play Carolina basketball.
