Coach Hatchell continues to do great and is exceeding all expectations, said Dr. Pete Voorhees, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology. Her leukemia is in a complete molecular remission. She is tolerating therapy extraordinarily well. She has several more planned sessions of chemotherapy to wipe out any residual disease that might be left behind. This is standard practice. We remain highly optimistic and look forward to getting her back to the team! Hatchell, who learned she had leukemia back in October, has had a busy week after spending Wednesday at the Raleigh Sports Club, addressing the crowd for one of her first public appearances since she was diagnosed. She has attended four of North Carolina s women s basketball games recently, and spoke to the crowd at halftime of the game against Maryland on Jan. 5 in Chapel Hill. As she addressed the Carmichael Arena crowd, Hatchell mentioned for the first time publicly that she has gone into remission. She remains optimistic to rejoin her team this season. HATCHELL STEPS AWAY FOR HEALTH REASONS University of North Carolina women s basketball head coach Sylvia Hatchell is temporarily stepping away from her on-the-court coaching responsibilities due to a recent diagnosis of leukemia. I am going to be involved in a treatment plan established by Dr. Pete Voorhees, medical oncologist, and his team from the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, says Hatchell. I have the utmost confidence in my doctors. There is a reason why the North Carolina Cancer Hospital ranks as one of the top cancer facilities in the nation. I will remain very much involved with my team and day-to-day operations here at UNC and expect to return to my sideline responsibilities as soon as possible. My veteran staff and team will be well prepared and meet any challenges until my return. Don t forget I am a Tar Heel woman! Coach Hatchell has been a tireless ambassador for our cancer center for the last 15 years, says Shelley Earp, MD, Director, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. She has helped us in countless ways. Now it is our turn to be there for her with the best care and our team s full support. Associate head coach Andrew Calder will direct the team during Coach Hatchell s absence. Calder is also in his 28th season with the Tar Heels. He s been a part of six 30-win seasons and three Final Fours, including the national championship in Billy Lee, UNC s director of video and scouting and special assistant to the head coach, will temporarily be added to the coaching staff so that the Tar Heels may have a full number of coaches on the court at practice. 8 North Carolina head coach Sylvia Hatchell solidified her place among the legends of basketball in 2013 when the winningest active coach in women s basketball was chosen for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a member of the class of After a season that saw Hatchell join Pat Summitt and Jody Conradt in the 900-win club, Hatchell s induction into the Naismith Hall of Fame cements her status as one of the greatest ever to coach the women s game. Entering her 28th season in Chapel Hill and her 39th overall as a head coach, Hatchell s career record of gives her more wins than any other active women s coach. With a mark at Carolina, she also stands as one of only three coaches - along with Kay Yow and Debbie Ryan - to reach the 600-win mark at an Atlantic Coast Conference school. Beyond the sheer magnitude of wins, Hatchell s credentials are sterling. She was inducted into the Women s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004, has been named national coach of the year three times and has led teams to at least 20 wins 29 times, fourth-most nationally. While Hatchell keeps impressive company in many categories, she is also part of an exclusive club that features just one member. When UNC defeated Louisiana Tech to win the 1994 NCAA Championship, Hatchell became the first and only coach to lead teams to national championships at the AIAW, NAIA and NCAA levels. Those titles - the first two coming at Francis Marion - are the crown jewels in one of the most decorated coaching careers in women s basketball history. Since coming to Chapel Hill in 1986, Hatchell has forged a tradition of excellence at Carolina. Under her direction, the Tar Heels have won a national championship and eight ACC titles, compiled six 30-win seasons and claimed five ACC Player of the Year and six ACC Rookie of the Year honors. With the reputation of the school, the image, the location and the athletic programs - including the men s basketball program - I knew we could build a tremendous women s basketball program here, Hatchell says. While that 1994 championship season, which capped back-to-back 30-win seasons, marked Carolina as a player on the national scene, Hatchell and the Tar Heels have surged to the forefront of that scene in recent years. Since the beginning of the season, UNC has compiled a record of , won four Atlantic Coast Conference titles and made two Final Four appearances. In addition to the personal accolades Hatchell acquired in , the season also saw Carolina reclaim its position as one of the top teams in America. The Tar Heels finished with a record of 29-7 that featured a Preseason WNIT championship and a run to the ACC Tournament title game. UNC received the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Bridgeport Region, its highest NCAA seed since earning four consecutive No. 1 seeds from The campaign featured a Carolina first under Hatchell - the Tar Heels completed an undefeated ACC regular season. In addition to winning all 14 regular season contests, the Tar Heels brought home a fourth-straight tournament crown by defeating Duke, UNC earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight postseason and advanced to the Elite Eight. Hatchell s Tar Heels were among the nation s best throughout the season, which saw Carolina establish a school record for wins with 34. UNC opened the campaign with a 24-game winning streak, the best start to a season in school history. Along the way the Tar Heels defeated national powers Tennessee and Connecticut as well as defending national champion Maryland. March saw Carolina win its third ACC championship in as many years and advance to the Final Four for the third time in program history. The season was one of the most successful in program history and Hatchell was honored accordingly. The Tar Heels earned the program s first in-season No. 1 ranking, won a second-consecutive ACC title and reached the Final Four. Hatchell was honored as national coach of the year by the Associated Press, the WBCA and Basketball Times. She also received the Naismith Award and was named ACC Coach of the Year. Among the players Hatchell has coached during her career are Charlotte Smith, a national player of the year whose last-second shot won the 1994 national championship and who now coaches Elon University; Marion Jones, the point guard on the 1994 team; forward Tracy Reid, a two-time ACC Player of the Year and the 1998 WNBA Rookie of the Year; and Ivory Latta, the 2006 national player of the year and a 2013 WNBA All-Star with Washington. Other former Tar Heels with WNBA experience are Nikki Teasley, who hit the winning shot as the Los Angeles Sparks won the 2002 league championship and was named MVP of the 2003 WNBA All-Star Game; Coretta Brown, who played for the Chicago Sky; La Tangela Atkinson, a firstround draft pick in 2006; Camille Little, another firstround pick who won a WNBA title with Seattle; Erlana Larkins, a consensus All- America in 2008 who won a WNBA title with Indiana; LaToya Pringle, UNC s career leader in blocks; Jessica Breland, who bravely returned from a battle with Hodgkin s lymphoma to lead the Tar Heels to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen; and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt, who went from undrafted free agent to key contributor for Washington in In preparation for a career in coaching, Hatchell earned a B.S. degree in physical education and health from Carson-Newman in While at Carson-Newman, in addition to playing basketball and volleyball, Hatchell coached the Talbott School girls basketball team to a winning season and a trip to the playoffs. She then spent a year coaching the junior varsity women s team and earning a master s degree at the University of Tennessee. Prior to taking over the Tar Heel program, Hatchell guided Francis Marion to a mark over 11 seasons. She coached the 1986 Lady Patriots to a remarkable 36-2 record and a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national championship. Her 1982 team was her first national championship squad, as Francis Marion captured the AIAW small college division crown. In 1984, the Lady Patriots posted a 28-5 record, advancing to the quarterfinals of the NAIA national tournament, and received the Fellowship of Christian Athletes National Team Sportsmanship Award. Under Hatchell s direction, Francis Marion routinely led the nation in scoring and the Lady Patriots were never ranked lower than 18th during her 11 seasons. In 1993, Hatchell was inducted into the Francis Marion University Athletic Hall of Fame. Hatchell s collegiate success is only a part of her impressive head coaching resume. In August 1995, she led the U.S. to a silver medal at the World University Games in Fukuoka, Japan. Former Tar Heels Sylvia Crawley and Charlotte Smith were key members of the team, and Marion Jones was named to the team but broke a bone in her foot and could not compete. During the summer of 1994, Hatchell directed the United States team to the gold medal in the R. William Jones Cup. The team s 8-0 record included a win over Canada and a overtime victory against Korea in the championship game. Hatchell also has extensive international experience as an assistant coach of U.S. women s teams. She was an assistant coach for the U.S. team that claimed the gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games and served in the same capacity for the 1986 U.S. national women s squad that won gold medals at both the Goodwill Games and World Championships. In fact, she was at training camp with that national team at Eastern Michigan University when she received the call from Swofford informing her that she would be Carolina s next coach. Hatchell s stints in international competition also include serving as an assistant coach for the U.S. World University Games team that won the gold medal in 1983 and the team that won a silver medal in She was a court coach at the U.S. Olympic basketball tryouts in both 1984 and 1992 and also worked on the Olympic Games basketball events staff in Los Angeles in In her initial task for the Amateur Basketball Association of the United States of America, she coached the South More On Hatchell... In 1979, Hatchell joined legendary Maryland coach Chris Weller to coach the East All-Stars at the Hanes All-American Classic. The West team was led by Jody Conradt of Texas and Sonja Hogg of Louisiana Tech. In addition to her national coach of the year honors, Hatchell s long list of coaching awards includes the 1986 Converse NAIA Regional Coach of the Year and the 1986 AMF Voit Championship Coach Award. In 1995, she was named College Basketball Coach of the Year by Athletes International Ministries. Actively involved in shaping the sport of women s basketball, Hatchell served as president of the Women s Basketball Coaches Association during the season. Hatchell graduated cum laude from Carson-Newman College, where she played basketball and volleyball. In March 1994, she was honored as the Carson-Newman Distinguished Alumnus of the Year and in 1999 she was inducted into the school s Athletic Hall of Fame. In the summer of 2009, Hatchell had the honor of being inducted into both the North Carolina and South Carolina Sports Halls of Fame. Hatchell s husband, Sammy, is also a basketball coach. Formerly the all-time winningest coach at Meredith College in Raleigh, Sammy is currently the associate head coach of the Shaw University women s team that won the 2012 Division II national title. Fittingly, the couple met at a summer league basketball game and attended a basketball clinic on their first date. They married two years later, in Sammy helps run the North Carolina basketball camps each summer. The Hatchells have a 24-year-old son, Van, a former all-state and Carolina men s basketball player who is a recent graduate of UNC. Van has grown up around our players and staff and Sammy has known them all as long as I have, Hatchell says. So instead of having a family of three, Van and Sammy and I have a family of 20.

Gray had 17 points and 10 rebounds to help the No. 13 Tar Heels beat the No. 8 Terrapins Rookie Diamond DeShields scored 22 points to lead the sixth-seeded Tar Heels, who led all but 5 seconds but still had to fight to put away the Big Ten-bound Terrapins in what turned out to be their final ACC game. Now UNC is back in the semifinals for the 28th time in 37 tournaments with a chance at a three-game season sweep of No. 10 Duke on Saturday. March 8 - Duke 66, UNC 61 Duke hit the go-ahead free throws with 44.1 seconds to rally past Carolina in the semifinals of the ACC tournament. The two free throws broke a 60-all tie and helped the Blue Devils avoid a three-game sweep by the Tar Heels. Duke went 6 for 6 at the foul line in the final minute of a tight game. After Oderah Chidom hit two more free throws to make it with 17.5 seconds left, Diamond DeShields launched a 3-pointer for the tie but it rattled out. Chidom got the rebound and was fouled, knocking down two more free throws with 9.2 seconds left to seal the win. DeShields led all scorers with 25 points. Classmates Allisha Gray had 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting from distance and Stephanie Mavunga provided 13 points and nine rebounds going up against ACC Defensive Player of the Year Elizabeth Williams.

The Daily Tar Heel :: Diamond DeShields dares to dream 3/17/14 2:10 PM The Daily Tar Heel URL: Current Date: Mon, 17 Mar :10: Diamond DeShields dares to dream By Dylan Howlett The Daily Tar Heel Updated: 01/24/14 1:23am Diamond DeShields has enough dreams to fill a book, so she does. Not long after the morning sunlight creeps into her bedroom, she snatches her dream book and writes. Dreams, nightmares, fragments of both they all get chronicled. She can relive delight, and fright, with one flick of the page. Some don t need their own chapter. Some remain embedded in DeShields, immortalized by memory, fossilized by emotion. Helping others makes her happy, gives her a degree of satisfaction that basketball will never reach. When asked why she feels this way, the incendiary guard of the North Carolina women s basketball team recalls a real-life dream interwoven with a nightmare. An aspiring basketball player getting to meet her idol, a women s basketball star. The indifferent, I m-too-good-for-this attitude of the idol, whose identity DeShields withheld out of respect. A crushed middle school girl from the Atlanta suburbs making an ironclad pact with herself. I just told myself Her smile, enough to make a lighthouse squint, disappears. Her face dissolves into tears. that if I m in a position to be that good of a player More tears. that I wouldn t do that to somebody else that looks up to me. An ode to her past, a splash of the present, a nod to the future. Dreams, nightmares, insecurities, sources of pride they re all a part of Diamond DeShields, a strand of DNA, inextricably one. Human highlight reel Basketball can make DeShields happy. UNC s leading scorer can splice two defenders, perform pirouettes on her way to the basket, make passes that some point guards would never dare try to make. When she makes a routine play by her standards, a highlight reel, did-you-see-that?! play by layman s standards, DeShields, 18, simply smiles, a cheek-to-cheek glow that lifts her 6-foot-1-inch body off the hard court. It can make me very happy, DeShields said of basketball, but it can also make me really mad. Such as now, for instance. DeShields, outfitted in a Tar Heels tracksuit and sweatpants, kneads her non-shooting left hand after a Friday practice. She broke several bones in her hand Dec. 21, a result of a hard foul and collision during the game against High Point. She sat out one game and returned with the aid of a brace. The sport, of course, has given DeShields ample happiness. She won multiple world championships on U.S. national teams. She won three state titles at Georgia s Norcross High School. She won the 2013 Naismith Award as the nation s top high school player of the year. Along the way, she has stupefied coaches and players with her ability, at once supernatural and dumbfounding. Angie Hembree, who coached DeShields at Norcross and once coached Maya Moore when she was in high school, said DeShields outpaced Moore, a star at Connecticut and the 2011 No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA, in athleticism. Both players could dunk as high school freshmen. I would say, athletically, she s right there with the best of the best, Hembree said. Allisha Gray, a freshman guard, has seen it, too, ever since she met DeShields on their seventh-grade AAU team and became best friends with the smiling girl who reached out to her shy teammate. Page 1 of 3

The Daily Tar Heel :: Diamond DeShields dares to dream 3/17/14 2:10 PM A girl who can grab the rim with ease and dunk? That s weird, Gray said. I ve never seen that before. That s just stupid athletic ability. It could, in Gray s words, get even more stupid. So long as her health and enviable skills remain loyal to DeShields, she wants to be the best basketball player ever. But she has little interest in the trappings of fame. DeShields likes to stay in her room with Gray, her roommate, and play Call of Duty or NBA2K14. She keeps a bookshelf in her room and keeps it full. Her Bible sits nearby. If she has to shop, she does so online. The things I like and the things that I don t like are pretty unconventional for a basketball player of my caliber, DeShields said. It s true. After all, rarely does a basketball prodigy fall out of love with the sport. Not her first love Diamond DeShields grew up playing baseball. She owes more than nostalgia to the sport: Her name, her parents say, comes from her father s baseball career. Delino DeShields played 13 years in the majors, and the Houston Astros drafted his son, Delino, Jr., 8th overall in the 2010 MLB draft. DeShields wanted to follow in her brother and father s footsteps. She didn t play her first game of organized basketball until sixth grade. With her dad and mom, Tisha, an All-America runner at Tennessee, DeShields had a lethal brew of athletic genes and a lust for winning. In middle school, she ran track and played tennis, softball and football. The middle school coach asked her to play quarterback. Even bowling and golf came naturally. Basketball didn t, at least in terms of enjoyment. DeShields hated it, hated it so much that she quit, hated it so much that she threw down her AAU jersey and vowed never to play again. My team was terrible, DeShields said. I do not like losing. I don t like losing at all. DeShields played well, but her teammates became an albatross around her neck. She couldn t do everything by herself in a team sport, she said. It was time to find something in which she could carry her own weight without worrying about somebody else s. So I quit, and I played tennis and I was like, You know, I can win this by myself. And then I started losing in tennis, DeShields said, laughing. All the pressure was on me. That, of course, neglects the ease with which she took to tennis. DeShields went to Florida to train with Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena. She was good, damn good, and thinks she could play professionally now if she had stuck with it. A tennis racket sits in her Carmichael Arena locker, should the urge to hit a few balls strike. Dream on DeShields has never wanted to be like somebody else. Not even her parents. Not even herself. When she burst onto the national high school basketball scene during her freshman year, interviewers would quickly invoke her parents. How fortunate to have such advantageous genes, they d say. DeShields preferred her hard work to speak for itself. Analysts compare DeShields to Moore and another college basketball and WNBA star, Candace Parker. That s all, DeShields said. A comparison, not some sort of lifelong membership to an exclusive club. They re great in their own right, and I want to be great in my own right, DeShields said. I don t want to be like them. And then there s herself. Respectful, Gray said, a great motivator, a sisterly friend. A hard worker, coach Andrew Calder said, always the first one at practice, taking shots by herself. A leader, Hembree said, a good-as-gold role model. There s no doubt that I love that child, she said. Be warned, DeShields said she laments what she calls her own issues, namely putting pressure on herself in matters big and small. DeShields and her teammates went bowling recently, a time to decompress. DeShields fumed during most of the outing, livid with herself for a subpar performance on the lanes. When girls tell her that they want to be her, they want to be just like Diamond DeShields, DeShields smiles outwardly and cringes inwardly. I wouldn t want anybody to be like me, but they don t know my issues, DeShields said. I wouldn t want someone to be out with their team just really getting mad over something that small. I just tell anybody to be themselves. Page 2 of 3

The Daily Tar Heel :: Diamond DeShields dares to dream 3/17/14 2:10 PM Perhaps she told that to her middle school self to be like you, not like the standoffish idol standing before you. Perhaps that s why DeShields grew up to be nothing like her former hero. As part of a local charity organization, she grew up devoting hours on Thanksgiving to preparing and distributing meals to the homeless. She helped arrange the purchase of school supplies for underprivileged students. When her 9-year-old sister needs Division I assistance at practice, DeShields shows up as a guest coach. It s just good to help people and know that people want your help, DeShields said. The WNBA? It s a goal, DeShields said. But injury the unforeseen can derail that in an instant. Her dream? Living comfortably, happily. Having her family close by. To be loved, to have somebody to love. To work in science or technology for the betterment of society, to make people s lives easier. What I try to do in life is bigger than basketball, and I try not to be so focused on basketball that I lose sight of everything else that s surrounding me that s important, she said. It could be that the most important thing happened last night, during her sleep. An inspiration, a message, a calling. DeShields keeps her pen close by, the empty pages in her dream book even closer. sports@dailytarheel.com Published January 22, 2014 in Women's basketball, Sports Powered by Solutions by The State News Page 3 of 3

The Daily Tar Heel :: Ivory Latta brings toughness, perspective to Tar Heels 3/17/14 2:15 PM The Daily Tar Heel URL: Current Date: Mon, 17 Mar :15: Ivory Latta brings toughness, perspective to Tar Heels By Robbie Harms The Daily Tar Heel Updated: 01/24/14 1:23am There was surely some day like this all those years ago. Some gray Tuesday just before 3 p.m., and Ivory Latta, the player, would be hopping around Carmichael Arena, laughing, her trademark damndid-you-just-see-that look on her face: eyes wide open, jaw dropped, jokingly incredulous. Some nondescript afternoon, and Ivory Latta, the player, would be yelling, There you go! There you go! That s it! after the North Carolina women s basketball team rotated well and forced a tough shot by its practice opponent. Some routine weekday, and Ivory Latta, the player, wearing dark basketball shorts, blue-and-black Nikes and a ponytail a quarter of the way down her back, would be dapping up North Carolina players, smiling and animated, the master of the court. The difference now, of course, is that Ivory Latta, the player, is now Ivory Latta, the coach. Latta the 2006 national player of the year and UNC s all-time leading scorer is no longer the fiery college point guard who led the Tar Heels to back-to-back Final Fours with a playing style that reflected her coach s toughness. She s the fiery pro point guard hired as UNC s assistant coach in July 2013 to help the team return to national prominence. And so far UNC seems poised to do just that. The Tar Heels are 16-3 and ranked No. 7 in the country all without the sideline presence of Hallof-Fame coach Sylvia Hatchell. It feels good to be back, Latta says. Did she ever really leave? Toughness, born Latta was born in McConnells, S.C., pop. 266, in Nineteen years later, the town would celebrate Ivory Latta Day. She was, and is, beloved there. It was her Chapel Hill before she got to Chapel Hill. As a kid she would pick plums, climb trees, help her father garden. And play basketball. She started at age 4. She s the youngest of seven, so she learned quickly that quick beats most other traits. Four brothers, she says, so they pretty much beat me up all the time. The pounding only continued. Her dad made her play with older girls. I was 11, but I had to play with the 13-and-under team, Latta says. My dad never allowed me to play with anybody my age. The older, bigger competition molded her into the best scorer in South Carolina history. She averaged 44.6 points per game as a senior at York Comprehensive High School, and once scored 70. (She also had 12 assists and 14 rebounds that game.) The accolades swelled, naturally, and she had to decide at which college she d continue her auspicious career. Her older brother loved to watch a player named Michael Jordan on TV, and Latta would join him. Every time he watched the game I had to sit down and watch it, she says. Then all of a sudden I was like, Man, I wanna go to North Carolina. Page 1 of 3

The Daily Tar Heel :: Ivory Latta brings toughness, perspective to Tar Heels 3/17/14 2:15 PM When I first got my letter, I thought, I m going there. I don t want another letter, ever. She received others, of course, but it didn t matter: Latta was going to UNC. Heart of a lion You could say Latta learned to be tough out of necessity: her brothers, then her older opponents, never let her forget who was young and small, and who wasn t. Then she met Sylvia Hatchell. Hatchell, who wasn t available for an interview for this story, approaches basketball much in the same way she approaches life: there will be obstacles, and you re defined by how you handle them. Latta loved it. It was her childhood, relived. Her and coach Hatchell have always gotten along really well because they re very similar, says Bobby Hundley, the team s former sports information director. They have a similar outlook on the world. Latta possessed that outlook, in part, before she came to UNC, but it was cemented by Hatchell. Coach Hatchell always taught me never take anything for granted, Latta says. She always told me I had the heart of a lion, and I always took that with me. She s like, You a tough cookie. She always told me: You a tough cookie. The tough cookie flourished in Chapel Hill. By the end of her career in addition to the all-time scoring mark she would set UNC records for 3-pointers made, 3-point percentage and free-throw percentage. One of the principal reasons for Latta s success was Hatchell s loose leash for her point guard. Hatchell didn t constrict Latta, didn t force her to be something she wasn t or play within a system. She let Latta be Latta. She allowed me to really just go out there and be myself and play, Latta says. She made me and molded me into the person and player that I am today. Person and player. Hatchell ensured Latta wasn t a basketball-over-everything, singularly focused athlete. They both knew there was more to life than a game that once used peach baskets as hoops. That became even clearer last year. Hatchell was diagnosed with cancer. Toughness, gained UNC hired Latta as an assistant coach in July Hatchell was diagnosed with leukemia in October She has since gone into remission and could return to the sideline as early as this season. The news shook Latta. But she knew Hatchell too well to think that d it make the coach give up basketball and adopt a woe-is-me attitude. She s a soldier, Latta says. With all the stuff that she s going through I realize she is who I got my toughness from. She will be back, trust me, she continues. There s nothing that s going to hold a lady like that down. Ivory Latta, the coach, had an even more important job in Hatchell s absence. She told me, Hey, you gotta step up. God brought you here for a reason. You are here for a reason, so I m gonna need you to step up and be the leader that I know you can be, Latta says. That s all she had to tell me. It was just like old times, all those years ago: Hatchell would instruct, and Latta would carry out. The roles haven t changed, only the positions. On- and off-the-court, she s been a very good presence since coach Hatchell left, says junior guard Latifah Coleman. It s been good having her. Latta s primary task is taking care of UNC s guards. She knows what it s like to be a Division I athlete with class and studying and sleep and Page 2 of 3

The Daily Tar Heel :: Ivory Latta brings toughness, perspective to Tar Heels 3/17/14 2:15 PM basketball to worry about. She also knows what it s like to be a professional player: in UNC s offseason, she ll return to the WNBA s Washington Mystics. She brings that perspective of being a player, says junior guard Megan Buckland. Knowing the work ethic that we have to have in order to make it to that next level She knows what our bodies are going through. Ivory Latta, the coach On this day Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013 their bodies are going through a scrimmage against UNC s men s club basketball team. The girls wear blue; the guys, white. The next day the No. 18 Tar Heels will beat No. 15 Nebraska by 13 to improve to 7-2. Sneakers squeak, players sweat and associate head coach Andrew Calder barks instructions and forcefully motions players into position. Guys, I need y all to rebound! he shouts. Eighty-fifth in the country in rebounding! Latta stands near the sideline opposite the players. She s unfailingly animated, yelling encouragement, looking amazed and biting the nail of her left ring finger, sometimes all at once. She has a fun, bubbly personality that makes you wanna hang out with her, makes you wanna have that conversation with her, Buckland says after practice. She s that coach that makes working out outside of practice fun. At practice, it s mostly business. Aye, good switch! she bellows after UNC forces a club player to throw the ball out of bounds. Mostly business. UNC guard Brittany Rountree slaps the ball away from a club player. Latta runs up to him. Oh, oh, oh! she playfully teases him. Another club player is set to shoot. Aye. Aye. Miss it, Latta says, a mock-serious look on her face. When the practice ends, Calder calls his players to huddle at half court. Academics, academics, academics, he stresses, before providing the schedule for the following day: a shootaround from 1:15-1:45 p.m., pregame meal at 2 p.m., game time at 6 p.m. Be ready to play, ladies, he says. Be ready to play. Latta stands outside the huddle. She d be ready to play, but now she s Ivory Latta, the coach. Sky s the limit, Calder says to his team. Someone surely said that to Latta all those years ago. sports@dailytarheel.com Published January 22, 2014 in Men's basketball Sports Powered by Solutions by The State News Page 3 of 3

ESPN.com - Xylina McDaniel steps up for UNC 3/17/14 2:14 PM ESPN.com: Women's College Basketball Tuesday, January 21, 2014 Updated: January 22, 9:38 AM ET Xylina McDaniel steps up for UNC images] [Print without By Michelle Smith espnw.com Xylina McDaniel looks at all these freshmen sometimes and shakes her head. "Lord, did I act like them?" she asks, laughing. "And I'm sure I did." It wouldn't take much for the North Carolina forward to try and recall those days. They were only a year ago. But McDaniel is a sophomore now, and that qualifies her as a veteran, a veritable fountain of college basketball experience, on this youthful North Carolina team. The 19-year-old McDaniel is in the Tar Heels' starting lineup every night with four freshmen. McDaniel, last year's ACC rookie of the year, referred to herself as an "upperclassmen" during a recent news conference. Technically, it's incorrect, but on a team with six freshmen, three sophomores and no seniors, no one is really arguing. "She's really had to be that leader, on and off the court," North Carolina assistant coach Ivory Latta said. "And if you are not in the right place or doing the right thing, trust me, she is going to let you know." McDaniel has been where the rookies are, a young star facing high expectations in her first collegiate season. And much still is expected of her, this time as a leader, a mentor and an example. On the court, McDaniel directs the action, plays the calming influence, gives directions and hands out confidence boosts. Off the court, she's a sounding board and a resource. "I get a lot of questions from them," McDaniel said. And though sometimes they drag their feet, the rookies know McDaniel is there for them. "Sometimes we are too shy to ask her things," freshman forward Stephanie Mavunga said. "We say, 'Well never mind.' And she says, 'Just ask me.' She's really patient with us. She just got done doing this and she relates to us. Some of us forget that she's a sophomore." As a freshman, McDaniel started 33 games, averaging 11.3 points and 7.1 rebounds a game for a team that went 29-7, losing to Elena Delle Donne and Delaware in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Page 1 of 3

ESPN.com - Xylina McDaniel steps up for UNC 3/17/14 2:14 PM This season, North Carolina is 16-3 overall and 4-1 in ACC play, has won 11 of its last 12 games and moved up to No. 7 in the AP Top 25, the program's highest ranking since January McDaniel is averaging 12.4 points and 6.2 rebounds a game. She ranks fourth on the team in scoring -- behind three of those freshmen whom she's mentoring. "These freshmen are smart," McDaniel said of the group that made up the nation's No. 1 recruiting class last year. "They know how to play the game." She makes the game easier for me, she's made my transition much easier than it would have been. She works really hard, and that's something I can look to. She's only a year older, but she has the experience. -- UNC reshman Stepanie Mavunga on Xylina McDaniel The same can certainly be said about McDaniel. She has been around basketball almost her entire life, groomed for this by her father, former NBA star Xavier McDaniel, best known as the '"X-Man." Dad has taken care of the basketball skills, worked her and coached her and pushed her until her game was ready for prime time. He coached her AAU teams while Xylina was a high schooler in South Carolina. Heck, he's still coaching her. She can hear his voice as clear as day when he's in the gym. She can hear him even when he's not there. "No matter where he's sitting, no matter what gym we are in, I hear everything he's saying," she said. "Sometimes I want to tune him out and I can't. I can actually hear what he's saying to me through the TV. "He's gotten me to where I am. We've spent so much time, late nights, early mornings. I still talk to him every day." But Xavier McDaniel admits he hasn't covered much ground when it comes to leadership. "That's a situation where she's got to learn to count on herself," Xavier McDaniel said. "With a team this young, they all can be leaders. "I've told her that she can learn how to be a vocal leader, how to say something, but also to be an example on the floor. Go out and work hard. Be the first one in the gym and the last one to leave. You can't always talk during a game, you have to show it, too." Latta acknowledged that Xylina McDaniel has been asked to take on a lot of responsibility in a short amount of time. "As a sophomore, she should be looking for a senior to take her under their wing," Latta said. "But everybody is looking to her for advice. They look at every little thing, your body language, your facial expressions. We've told her, 'How you play is going to determine how far we go. And she's stepped up to that challenge." Mavunga said she calls McDaniel her "P.O.C."-- her partner on the court. Page 2 of 3

CAROLINA: Warrior Princess By Amy Hoots Her name is Stephanie; her name is Tafadzwa. She's from the Midwest; she was born in Zimbabwe. She is a fierce competitor; she is a princess. She's never met a stranger; she misses her family. She takes her faith seriously, but not herself. Don't try to put Stephanie Mavunga into a box-she won't fit. Not her 6-3 frame and not her equally large personality. She's the freshman forward from Indiana who is a character and has character. Her bubbling spirit and basketball presence shine as bright as her lips. Princess Steph When Mavunga stepped on Carolina's campus for the first time, none of her teammates knew about the nickname she left behind in Indiana. So when the same nickname was used for the first time by one of her Carolina teammates, she was extremely surprised. Evidently when "Princess Steph" transplanted from Indiana to Chapel Hill, she didn't leave her crown behind. "I guess they say I'm high maintenance," she laughed. So what sort of things does she do to earn that name? "She has to drink everything out of a straw," said sophomore Xylina McDaniel. "If I don't have a straw, I'm waterfalling it into my mouth," said Mavunga, who doesn't like to touch her lips to cups. Thankfully, the water bottles on the bench allow Mavunga to drink without calling for a straw. But her quirks do extend to timeouts when she can be seen applying lip gloss before reentering the game. Assistant coach Tracey Williams has the high honor of holding the tube for the princess. That led to this conversation between Mavunga and a reporter. Q: So let me get this straight, you wear lip gloss during the game and reapply throughout? A: Well, my lips get chapped. Q: Ever tried chapstick? A: Yeah, that but that leaves a weird feeling. I like how the lip gloss feels. Q: Be honest, you want to look good. A: Haha. Ok, yeah. But you've got to look good to play good! If you knew nothing else of the freshman Tar Heel, you may call her a prima donna, or perhaps worse. But get to know Mavunga and you see why "Princess Steph" is voiced with affection-not annoyance-by her coaches and teammates. Assistant coach Ivory Latta has high praise for Mavunga. "She's a lovable kid. She's so humble and she loves to have fun. She works hard and wants to be the best post player out there. She's got a great attitude; you can see a smile on her face all the time." And her "royal" ways? "That's her, that her personality, that's who she is," Latta laughed. Journey to Carolina Mavunga was born Tafadzwa Stephanie Paula Mavunga in Harare, Zimbabwe. Hoping to provide a better education for Mavunga and her two brothers, her parents moved the family to Indiana when Mavunga was three years old. She went by her given name, Tafadzwa, until she was in the third grade. At that time she transferred from a school with a very diverse students to a school that was almost exclusively Caucasian. At roll call, the teacher stumbled over her name and hearing titters from her classmates, Mavunga asked the teacher to call her Stephanie. She grew up around the game of basketball and the sport is a common bond between her two brothers. Her older brother, Julian, played at Miami of Ohio and is currently playing in Ukraine. Her younger brother, Jordache, is playing high school hoops back in Indiana, living in the shadow of his sister, the reigning Indiana Miss Basketball. Mavunga visited North Carolina the summer before her junior year. She recalls stepping on the court and thinking, "This is where I want to go." But second thoughts entered her head and worries of homesickness and she entertained other options, including Duke and Notre Dame, the latter being closer to home. Enter the Internet.

One day, her dad was perusing the computer and asked her, "Have you ever talked to Diamond DeShields before? She, Jessica Washington, and Allisha Gray went to UNC for a recruiting trip. These girls look like they mean business!" Mavunga crossed paths with these players at various times but didn't know any of them well. After some internet research, she realized the trio was very talented and each played different positions, a motivating factor for Mavunga to team up with these women in college. Mavunga started a private conversation with DeShields via Twitter, swapping stories, discussing visits, and dreaming of a team that had a superstar freshman class. The rest, as they say, is history. The four became a package deal and Carolina basketball was the lucky recipient of this pool of talent. Q: If it weren't for the other three, do you think you'd have ended up at North Carolina? A: No, I don't think so. Q: Don't tell me...you would've ended up eight miles down the road? A long pause. Nervous laughter and a smile. A: Yeah. If it wasn't for that, I'd be at Duke. Her Inspiration Written on her shoes is a phrase, PFC: Playing for Christ. When Mavunga opens her iphone, the first thing she sees is the phrase, "Let go and let God." She has prayers on her dorm wall she prays each night before going to bed. Her attitude on the court is always positive. "I try to walk off situations and smile when the ref makes what I think is a bad call. Looking down at my shoes, the sayings that are on there, and looking down at the name on my jersey really help me calm down and remember why I'm playing and who I'm playing for." Her assets on the court extend beyond her good attitude and her girly ways are checked at the scorer's bench. "I can be a princess," she says, "and I can look like one, but on the court you're going to get an animal, a beast ready to be unleashed. When we're playing, it's a whole different story." Mavunga is a tremendous shot blocker and rebounder and leads the team in both categories. Interim head coach Andrew Calder said, "She can rebound out of her area which is great skill. She's a tremendous player with a very bright future." On the offensive side, she also has an ability to finish around the rim. Latta said, "Sometimes she takes unbelievable shots and I'm sitting on the sideline thinking, wow, she's a freshman!" Calder praises her high basketball IQ and her ability to read a play before it develops. The entire freshman class, he said, "are not really freshman from a basketball standpoint." Mavunga also requires a double-team in the post, which frees up her teammates for open shots. Mavunga has improved since her early high school days. She said she used to get pushed around the post, but that is no longer the case. While Mavunga may be a starter on one of the top teams in the country, she is always working to improve. Right now, she's working on her outside shot and her ball handling. "The way I look at it, you don't practice something until you get it right. You practice something until you can't get it wrong. I keep doing something until I can't get it wrong." Calder is right. That doesn't sound like a freshman at all. Or a princess.

CAROLINA: In The Spotlight, Like It Or Not Release: 01/08/2014 By Amy Hoots This is an article about Andrew Calder. But please: don't tell him that. He probably wouldn't like it. And not in an "Aw shucks, don't write about me (wink wink)" sort of way. He keeps a low profile, and it's not by accident. He's a true behind-the-scenes guy and likes it that way. He'd rather draw up plays than draw in a crowd. He'd rather chat with other coaches, garnering inspiration, rather than chatting with reporters, garnering publicity. He'd rather dissect game film than have others dissect his statements. In an age when coaches are tweeting, posing, and self-promoting, Calder keeps the focus on what he loves: basketball. It's not that he's not personable. On the contrary, "He loves to have fun, he's a joker," said Ivory Latta, former Carolina point guard and current assistant coach of the Tar Heels. "He's stern, but he likes to joke around," former player Camille Little said. "He once told someone they were playing ocean defense,' because they were sitting there waving at people," she recalled, laughing. Longtime friend and associate athletic director Beth Miller believes he strikes a good balance between being a caring individual and an intense coach. He's a basketball junkie. He's a tactician who loves the X's and O's of basketball. As Little says, "He's one of those guys who is first in the office, first in the gym and the last one to leave." She recalls being in film sessions and Calder knowing every player and seemingly every stat. "Every little thing you could know, he knew." Latta agrees. "He's very passionate about the game of basketball. He studies the game so much. I feel like he needs more sleep," she said. Basketball runs through Calder's head day and night. "Thinking about the game of basketball all the time...it's hard to sleep," he said. He's also passionate about the university, the basketball program, the players, and coaches. With two passions combined, it's hard to imagine a better job for Calder. As a player under Calder, Latta knew he had a great basketball mind, but since joining the coaching staff, she's seen firsthand the enormous amount of work he puts in behind the scenes in preparation for games. "I'm learning so much from him," she said. "His knowledge of the game is off the charts. It's unbelievable!" "I just love the game of basketball," Calder said. "I've studied it so much and I try to talk with as many people about the game as I can so that I can continue to learn and basically add to Coach (Sylvia) Hatchell's philosophy." Keeping his preferred low profile is harder these days, with Calder's role as acting head coach while Hatchell undergoes treatment for leukemia. But he has managed it. "I try to be in the background as much as possible. And that's the way I like it, being in the background," he said. Ask anyone close to the program, and they'll tell you he's done an amazing job in his new role. Ask him, and he'll circle back to Hatchell. After news of her leukemia became public in October, Calder held a press conference (assumedly forced) in which he said, "Coach Hatchell has always felt the responsibility to prepare her assistants to be head coaches one day. So we have a great staff with a lot of experience and Coach Hatchell's done a great job preparing all of us to be a head coach one day."

He continually talks about following a game plan that has already been set by Hatchell. He sees himself as the implementer. It's easy to see why the Carolina head coach has kept Calder on her staff for 28 years. He is fiercely loyal, and in Hatchell's absence, he has managed to step up, yet stay back. The basketball part has been easy, he says. "Everything was already in place." Of course, no one is prepared to receive the news that a close friend is battling a serious illness. But Calder has been the steady presence on the sideline that his team has needed. Carolina entered conference play this past weekend ranked tenth in the country. After a loss to No. 8 Maryland on Sunday, they have a 12-3 record. The Tar Heels are as young as they are talented, and while Hatchell may be absent on the sideline, her style of play is still present. It is up-tempo, high-energy, exciting play. Calder will do his best to stay in the background this year, but if the season progresses as he hopes, his team will not be joining him there.
