Smith Center. The Tar Heels are coming off a win over North Carolina Central on riday night, while the Sun Devils will be playing their season opener. UNC is ranked No. 7 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll and No. 8 in the AP poll, while ASU is ranked No. 12 in both polls. ARIZONA STATE SERIES NOTES North Carolina is 3-0 all-time against Arizona State, with all three wins coming in the last ten years. Sunday s game will mark the fourth different venue in which the two teams have met. The 1999 game was played in Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill, the March 2005 game was played in Tempe and the Nov game was played in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Both the March 2005 game and the Nov game ended in identical scores of Sunday will mark the third regular season meeting between the two schools. NOTIN THE NCCU WIN Carolina established a new school record for margin of victory in its win over North Carolina Central on Nov. 9. The 77-point victory tops the 71-point win over South Carolina State (105) on Dec. 30, The 109 points scored by the Tar Heels were the most in a game since UNC scored 117 points in a win over Howard in The 32 points scored by NCCU were the fewest by a Tar Heel opponent since eorgia Tech scored 31 in a Carolina victory on Jan. 18, Carolina held seven opponents to less than 40 points during the season. McCANTS INALLY ETS OVER THE SCORIN HUMP Junior guard Rashanda McCants established her career high as a freshman with 16 points in a win over Arizona State. She then matched that total an amazing five times during her sophomore season. But one game into her junior campaign, the Asheville, N.C., native was finally able to increase that mark with a career-best 17 points in the win over North Carolina Central on Nov. 9. TAR HEELS SPREAD THE WEALTH IN OPENER Seven players scored in double figures for Carolina in its win over North Carolina Central on Nov. 9. Rashanda McCants (17) and Iman Mcarland (13) each established new career highs in the game. reshmen Cetera Deraffenreid (16) and Rebecca ray (11) each reached double digits in their Tar Heel debuts. Alex Miller (15), Heather Claytor (13) and LaToya Pringle (12) rounded out the double-figure scorers. Standout senior forward was held scoreless for the first time in her career. LARKINS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-ACC Senior forward was named to the five-player preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference team. Larkins was joined on the list by Maryland's Marissa Coleman, Duke's Abby Waner, NC State's Khadijah Whittington and preseason player of the year choice Crystal Langhorne of Maryland. Larkins was a first-team All-ACC selection in TAR HEELS PICKED SECOND IN PRESEASON POLL Coming off its third consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference title and second straight trip to the inal our, North Carolina was picked to finish second in the ACC by the league's coaches, SIDs and media. The Tar Heels received 10 first-place votes to finish second behind preseason favorite Maryland, who gathered the other 27 first-place votes. ollowing the Terps and Tar Heels, Duke was chosen to finish third, with lorida State, eorgia Tech and Virginia rounding out the top half of the league. LARKINS ON WADE, WOODEN LISTS The preseason "Wade Watch" list for the State arm Wade Trophy Division I Player of the Year was announced in August by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, and senior forward Erlana Larkins was among the candidates. The 25-member list, selected by a committee of leading coaches, journalists and basketball administrators, is comprised of top Division I student-athletes who best embody the spirit of Margaret Wade according to the following criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability. The John R. Wooden Award committee announced Nov. 1 the preseason candidates for the Women's Wooden Award, and Larkins was named among the 30 standout players. The Award is named for the threetime college basketball All American, 1932 Player of the Year and tentime national championship coach at UCLA. Larkins returns for her senior season after three standout years in Chapel Hill. The Riviera Beach, la., product was a third-team AP All-America honoree and was named first-team All-ACC.
