North Carolina Tar Heels 6-2 Head Coach: Sylvia Hatchell Record at UNC: Record Overall: UNC HOSTS PRESBYTERIAN ON TUESDAY North Carolina wraps up its fourth game in six days by hosting Presbyterian on Tuesday at 6 p.m. UNC head coach Sylvia Hatchell is only four wins shy of 1,000 career victories. Carolina has won four games in a row, tying for the longest winning streak over the last two seasons. Presbyterian head coach Todd Streelman, a native of Hickory, N.C., worked as a volunteer with the NCAA Championship North Carolina women s basketball team. Assistant coach Megan Buckland, from High Point, N.C., played portions of four seasons with the Tar Heels before graduating in May Buckland also served one season as the Head Video Coordinator for Carolina during the season. Carolina is the only ACC club with three players among the top-20 league scorers. Paris Kea is third in the ACC in scoring (19.5), Jaime Cherry is 12th (15.6) and Janelle Bailey is 16th (14.9). 3 Honors and Milestones Janelle Bailey ACC Newcomer Watch List ACC Rookie of the Week (11/20), (12/4) Paris Kea Preseason All-ACC Stephanie Watts Preseason All-ACC Junior guards Paris Kea and Stephanie Watts were named to the Preseason All- ACC Team. UNC, Duke, Louisville and Notre Dame are the four ACC teams to have multiple players on the preseason team. Freshman center Janelle Bailey was selected to the five-player ACC Newcomer Watch List. UNC s roster is made up of the eighth most freshmen and sophomores by percentage in the country. The underclassmen account for 10 of the 14 players on the roster. Hatchell has compiled the fourth most victories all-time behind former Tennessee legend Pat Summitt and Stanford s Tara VanDerveer & UConn s Gino Auriemma. Standing 6 foot, 6 inches tall, sophomore Naomi Van Nes is the tallest UNC player since 6-6 Waltiea Rolle from The Tar Heels overcame an 18-point deficit against Colorado, its largest comeback since the 2014 NCAA Tournament first round game against UT-Martin. UNC is shooting 47.0 percent as a team this season, a significant increase from last season s club that averaged 41.4% from the field. Carolina leads the ACC with an average of 18.8 assists per game. UNC has the top-3 ACC leaders in minutes per game - Jamie Cherry (37.6), Paris Kea (35.8) and Taylor Koenen (35.2). Carolina has had at least four double-digit scorers in seven of eight games. NATIONAL RANKINGS Team 13th in field goal percentage (47.0%) 15th in assists per game (18.8) 24th in scoring (79.5) HATCHELL THIRD AMONG ACTIVE CAREER WINS LEADER With 996 career wins, UNC Hall of Fame coach Sylvia Hatchell owns the third most wins among active women s basketball coaches, trailing only Stanford s Tara VanDerveer and UConn s Geno Auriemma. Tennessee legend Pat Summitt is the all-time leader with 1,098 wins. KEA STATS Paris Kea is off to a phenomenal start to her second season with the Tar Heels, ranking third in the ACC at 19.5 points per game. She is also fourth in the ACC with 6.9 assists and sixth with 2.6 steals per game Kea scored 31 points against South Alabama, one shy of her career high. She also handed out a career-high 11 assists against the Jaguars to notch her second career double-double. Kea is among five ACC players to score 30 point in a game this season. Kea has either made (59) or assisted (55) on 47.5 percent (114-of-240) of Carolina s field goals thus far this season. She has scored in double figures in 21 straight games going back to last season. BAILEY S BEEN BALLING Among ACC freshman, Janelle Bailey ranks first in the league in scoring with 15.6 points per game. She is shooting a robust 52.6 percent from the field, the 10th best average in the conference. Bailey had a season-high 25 points against Hartford, and registered 13 rebounds against the Hawks for her third double-double of her rookie season. CHARLOTTE SMITH S DUNK On December 4, 1994, Charlotte Smith, then a member of the Tar Heels women s basketball team, became the second collegiate women s player ever to dunk. The first dunk had come nearly 10 years earlier when West Virginia s Georgeann Wells accomplished the feat in a game against the University of Charleston. A native of Shelby, Smith had a stellar career with Tar Heels. She was the ACC Rookie of Year in 1992 and ESPN s National Player of Year in By the time she left Chapel Hill she had scored nearly 2,100 points, grabbed 1,200 rebounds and became one of only two women s basketball players at UNC to have her jersey retired. DEFENSE SETS TONE IN WON OVER APP STATE North Carolina won its fourth game in a row with a victory over Appalachian State on Sunday evening. In the 23rd meeting between the two instate rivals, Paris Kea and Jamie Cherry combined for 37 points and the Tar Heels limited the Mountaineers to only 17 points in the second half to improve to 6-2 on the season. The Tar Heels had an uncharacteristic off-shooting night scoring only 56 points, but their defense held Appalachian State to 29.2 shooting and nobody scored in double-figures. Pre Stanley led the Mountaineers with nine points. Kea scored a game-high 20 points and Cherry added 17. Freshman Janelle Bailey had 11 rebounds and sophomore Taylor Koenen hauled in 10 boards. REBOUNDING EDGE LEADS UNC PAST HARTFORD Janelle Bailey scored a season-high 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to pace North Carolina to a victory over Hartford. The victory was No. 995 for North Carolina head coach Sylvia Hatchell, moving her within five of reaching 1,000 career victories. Senior Jamie Cherry tossed in 19 points, junior Paris Kea added 14 points and seven assists and sophomore Taylor Koenen had 11. A 10-0 fourth-quarter run by the Tar Heels opened up a tightly-contested affair. Bailey scored on back-to-back possessions in the spurt to lift her club over a pesky Hawks club. A rebounding advantage led to Carolina holding a 23-4 edge in second-chance points. KOENEN S CAREER DAY Sophomore Taylor Koenen, a native Minnesotan, had the best game of her young career against the Golden Gophers on Wednesday, Nov. 29 by scoring a career-high 21 points and had six rebounds and six assists in playing 40 minutes. Koenen is averaging 10.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, an increase of her 6.6 points and 5.1 rebounds she contributed as a freshman in CAROLINA TOPS PREVIOUSLY UNBEATEN MINNESOTA Taylor Koenen s career-high 21 points led North Carolina to an victory over Minnesota on Wednesday in the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge from Carmichael Arena. Carolina improves to 8-3 all-time in the Challenge, while Minnesota falls to 4-7. Jamie Cherry had 19 points, Janelle Bailey registered a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, Jocelyn Jones added 14 points and Paris Kea had 11. BAILEY NAMED ACC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Freshman forward Janelle Bailey earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors on Monday, Nov. 20. A preseason selection for the ACC Newcomer Watch List, Bailey averaged 18.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week for the Tar Heels. She recorded her first career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Radford, the preseason favorite to win the Big South Conference. Bailey added 17 points and five rebounds against South Alabama on Sunday. CHERRY MAKES 106TH STRAIGHT APPEARANCE Jamie Cherry has played in all 106 games since joining the Tar Heel program. Her 100th consecutive appearance with the Tar Heels came on Sunday, Nov. 12 against Colorado. The Cove City, North Carolina, native has never missed a game in her collegiate career. Cherry not only scored a game-high 21 points, but also handed out six assists and came up with five steals for North Carolina (3-2). Freshman Janelle Bailey, the reigning ACC Rookie of the Week, had 16 points, Jocelyn Jones had 14 points, Taylor Koenen added 12 points and Paris Kea had 10 points and handed out eight assists against zero turnovers. Carolina pushed its advantage to as many as 31 points early in the fourth quarter. The Tar Heels shot a season-high 54.5 percent from the field and assisted on 26 of their 36 made baskets. SOUTH ALABAMA STEALS ONE FROM CAROLINA Despite 31 points and 11 assists from Paris Kea, North Carolina was upended, 85-84, by South Alabama on Sunday. Chyna Ellis (career-high 23 points), a preseason first team All-Sun Belt selection, scored the final bucket of the game on a layup with 5.0 seconds remaining.

4 Jamie Cherry s last second three-pointer to win the game was off target. South Alabama benefitted from making 13 three-pointers, offsetting a Tar Heel advantage in paint points. Emily Sullivan s put back made it Tar Heels, but USA scored the final four points to seal the win. CAROLINA SHUTS DOWN RADFORD Carolina put forth a strong defensive effort during a victory over Radford. Freshman Janelle Bailey notched her first career double-double with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 10 rebounds, while Paris Kea added 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Sophomore Emily Sullivan scored all 11 of her points in the fourth. Carolina gave up its fewest points in a game since an win over South Carolina State last December 30. Radford, the preseason pick to win the Big South, was limited to 25.0 percent shooting and turned the ball over 22 times. UNC WINS OT THRILLER OVER COLORADO Jamie Cherry and Paris Kea combined for 54 points and North Carolina overcame an 18-point deficit to earn a dramatic overtime victory over Colorado on Sunday afternoon. Kea scored a game-high 28 points and dished out nine assists, while Cherry had 26 points. The back-court duo was 21-of-40 from the field and had 14 assists, nine rebounds and five steals. Freshman Jocelyn Jones and sophomore Taylor Koenen both recorded doubledoubles. Jones had 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Koenen had 10 and 10. Freshman Janelle Bailey added 10. DRAMATIC COMEBACK BY CAROLINA North Carolina trailed by as many as 18 points in the first half against Colorado, and by a margin at intermission. The 18-point comeback is the largest since falling behind by an identical 18 points in the win over UT Martin in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. UNC SIGNS HIGHLY-RATED RECRUITING CLASS North Carolina has signed three players - Shayla Bennett and Jhileiya Dunlap, a pair of junior college All-Americans at Gulf State College, and incoming freshman Claudia Dickey, a two-sport athlete that will also play soccer for the Tar Heels. All-Star Girls Report have Bennett and Dunlap the No. 1 and No. 3 ranked junior college players, respectively, in the nation, and ASGR rankss Dickey the No. 40 overall basketball player in her signing class. THE #CHERRYBOMB LEGEND Senior Jamie Cherry has made it a habit of making big shots in big moments. Her most famous shot was the game-winning three-pointer with 0.6 seconds left against Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament second round that was the No. 1 play that night on SportsCenter on March 23, The first long-distance shot came at halftime of the game with ETSU on Jan. 2, Cherry later hit a 40-foot buzzer beater against Louisville in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals to send the game into overtime on March 6, As a sophomore, she made a half-court shot at the end of the first quarter against Oklahoma State on Dec. 14, and in the first round of the 2016 ACC Championship, Cherry s three-pointer at the end of regulation sent the game against Pitt into OT.
