4 Florida State University (Leonard Hamilton/Steve Robinson) Harrison High School (Jerry Meuschke) ON WILSON: In his fifth season as a member of the Florida State men s basketball team and earned his bachelor s degree in sport management during the spring of 2004 will play as a graduate student during the remaining two years of his basketball career in Tallahassee returns as a starter for the second consecutive season for the Seminoles and has started 22 games during his career a starter at the small forward/shooting guard positions who started the final 17 games of the season for Florida State during the season has played in two full seasons his first as a Seminole in 2001 and his most recent in 2004 during his four-year career played one game in 2002 before injuring his knee and was a starter in the first five games of the 2003 season before injuring his right wrist had surgery to remove excess bone close to the attachment of the Achilles tendon to the heel of his right foot in April of 2004 the surgery was performed to give the tendon more room to move freely thus reducing the chances of the tendon becoming inflamed played the entire season with the painful condition and it limited his practice and playing time throughout the season Wilson was at his best as a Seminole despite playing in pain throughout the season led Florida State in free throw shooting percentage with a.808 (42-52) percentage during his inaugural collegiate season ( ) became the first freshman in school history to lead the Seminoles in free throw shooting earned the Mr. Hustle award at the Seminoles annual banquet following the season. 8 ROMERO S REDSHIRT SEASON (2004): A highly touted big man who decided to redshirt the entire season when the NCAA restored his eligibility after the Seminoles had played 15 regular season and two exhibition games in question was Romero s amateur status resulting from his playing days in his native Argentina before enrolling at Lon Morris Junior College in 2001 a ruling by the NCAA Division I Management Council announced Jan. 12, 2004 restored his eligibility during its annual meeting in Nashville, the Division I Management Council determined that its endorsement of the effective date for the new amateurism standard for transfer student-athletes should be amended the initial directive, made in July 2002, from the management council stated any studentathlete who enrolled in an NCAA institution after August 1, 2003, and had signed a professional contract would fall under a new reinstatement standard DIEGO ROMERO JUNIOR FORWARD RIVADAVIA, ARGENTINA 25 Lon Morris Junior College (Dale Dotson) the management council determined the new standard, which makes student-athletes permanently ineligible to play a sport if they sign a professional contract that makes them a professional in that sport, unintentionally harmed transfer studentathletes by not applying the former standard for those student-athletes already enrolled at a collegiate institution before the effective date the new directive made it clear to the student-athlete reinstatement staff and committee that any student-athlete who is in conflict with the amateurism rules dealing with professionalizing themselves, and enrolled at an NCAA institution after the effective date, would be ineligible to play that sport the new standard also alleviated the two-prong standard that was previously applied to student-athletes seeking reinstatement by amending the directive, student-athletes who enrolled at any college prior to August 1, 2003, would be evaluated under the intent-to-professionalize standard which was previously used said Florida State Director of Athletics Dave Hart., Jr., regarding the decision: If not for the combination of expertise, persistent effort and research of the part of Bob Minnix (Florida State University s Associate Athletic Director for Compliance), I don t know that we would have ever arrived at this ultimate outcome.
