Playing with a smile on her face: That's just my personality. I just try to smile and have fun out there because I love to play basketball,. I think me smiling and having fun brings a lot of intensity to the team, and also a positive attitude. With a negative attitude we can't get anything accomplished, so I just try to stay positive the whole time. There are some times to laugh and some times to be serious and I know those situations, but when I'm serious I'm still having fun, whether I show it on my face or not. Her role on the team: I want to make more progress on my game and help everyone around me get better, too. That's my focus. As a point guard, my main role is to set the tone in every game. But if I get down, I know my teammates are going to bring me up and if they get down, I can bring them up. I've just got to set the tone for each game and each practice and make sure everyone is on the right page. Her family, in which she s the youngest of seven siblings: My family is the most important thing in my life. They've taught me so much. My parents have taught me to live every day, don't take anything for granted and thank God for everything you've got because there are a lot of people who would really want to be in your place. I don't take anything for granted. My parents have done so much for me in basketball, too. My dad built me a full court in our backyard and I thank him for that. He didn't have to do it, but I'd begged him ever since I was a little kid. My parents have traveled with me throughout my whole career. And my brothers and sisters follow me a lot. They try to go as many places as they can and see as many games as they can. Majoring in communication studies Beyond the Stats My major is: communication studies, because it s an interesting field After basketball, I hope to: do something with TV My dream job is: to be a supermodel The best moment of my basketball career has been: winning the 2005 ACC Championship My earliest basketball memory is: playing in rec leagues The people who have had the biggest impact on my basketball career are: my parents, because they ve always been there to give me support I wear my UNC jersey number, 20, because: it s a number I ve always liked During the offseason, I focused on improving: my shooting and my versatility To prepare for a game, I: relax, have fun and listen to music. Her role on this year s squad: I'll do what the coaches want me to do. I think they want me to be more versatile so I'm working on that, getting a better shot and reading the defense better. I think our team is very balanced. If it's not one person scoring, it's another. Anybody can step up at any time and we all have to be willing to accept that role and accept that challenge. Becoming a consistent three-point threat after hitting four in the 2005 ACC Championship game: I don't know if three-point shooting is really something people expect from me. I think it will help our team because if I pull bigger players to the outside to guard me, it will help with penetration. After the ACC Championship, people might see me as a shooter, but they might not see me as a consistent shooter and that's what I want to become. It's a combination of having confidence to shoot it and then to recognize that I have to make sure I can get the job done and hit those shots. Her father, Robert, who played for the Harlem Globetrotters: It was in high school when I realized how good he was. Before that, I didn't even know what a Harlem Globetrotter was. I've seen pictures of him in his uniform, but I haven't seen film of him playing or anything. To this day, I talk junk to him and tell him he can't beat me. If I was able to see him then, I'd probably look at it a little different, but now he s just my dad. When I look at the pictures, I laugh at him because the shorts he wore are so small. People tell me that I play like him, that our talent is the same. He's a good shooter, so I want to be like that. When I was younger and I played against him, I could never win he'd just shoot jump shots and beat me. I wish I could shoot like him. We'd have three sessions of that, one in the morning, one in the afternoon, one at night. We worked on how to get out of a trap, talking more on the court, not rushing when you re in the paint. It helped me see the game better and learn how to control the team and be a leader and not be as quiet as I was last year. I gained more knowledge of basketball, but I m still learning. Learning from Ivory Latta: I think she makes me better as a defender because I guard her, and she makes me a better dribbler because of the way she guards me. The pressure of being UNC s backup point guard: There s a little bit of pressure, but I think I can handle it after Point Guard College. Playing only basketball this season after also competing in track in each of her two previous years on the team: When I did both, for each season I was only dedicated to basketball then only dedicated to track, but I guess it's a little different this year because I'm not thinking about track at all, not even a little bit. What she hopes to bring to the team in her final year: I hope to provide some leadership. We do have a lot of young players on the team and I want do be a support system, plus I want to do everything I can on the court. I've worked a lot in the offseason on my shot and my defense. Over the summer, I realized how much I love basketball, I went out and played and shot all the time. Some days I'd go out and run two miles then come back in a shoot for a few hours. I just tried to get really ready for this season. I've improved my confidence. I think I won't look so indecisive on the court. I know the first year I was really confused, and the second year I felt like I was kind of more into it. Now I feel like, OK, I can calm down. The game has slowed down for me and I can see things better now. What she learned about competing from her f a t h e r, who won a Super Bowl with Washington and played in the Pro Bowl: He s helped me a whole lot. He s taught me a lot of the little things that you have to learn on you own, but I've kind of cheated by learning from him. Even when I was younger, he d tell me things like, Make sure you get enough sleep, that s really going to affect you. He'd tell me that when you get hit in a game, no matter how bad it hurts to try to act like it doesn't hurt or if you've got any kind of nagging pain, don't talk about it because then the other team knows, hey, her knee hurts. So don't say anything abut it even if it's about to fall off.
