For the third time this season in Cameron Indoor Stadium, Duke will host a battle of two top-10 teams on Monday as the second-ranked Blue Devils (22-1, 9-1) will host sixth-ranked Maryland (22-2, 9-1) on ESPN2 at 7:00 p.m. Monday s game will be televised by ESPN2 with Mark Jones (PxP), Doris Burke (Color) and Rebecca Lobo (Sideline) calling the action as part of Big Monday. The contest will also be aired live on the Duke Radio Network with Steve Barnes (PxP) and Missy Anderson (Color), while on XM Radio channel 192. Duke is ranked second in the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches Polls, while Maryland is sixth is both rankings. Both teams are also 9-1 in the ACC. The first 1,000 people in attendance on Monday will receive a free Duke t-shirt sponsored by Coca-Cola. The Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be holding a can food drive. The Blue Devils are closing in on 10 ACC victories with the next league win, which will mark their ninth straight year with 10 or more ACC wins. It is the longest current streak in the ACC-- Duke (8), North Carolina (4), N.C. State (1). Storylines... Duke held Maryland s Crystal Langhorne to a career-low zero rebounds in 38 minutes in the last meeting. Langhorne is the current ACC leader in rebounding (9.6) in ACC games only. The current members of the Duke team have never lost to 10 of the 12 ACC teams. The Blue Devils own win streaks against the following schools-- Florida State (2), Miami (2), Boston College (3), Virginia Tech (3), N.C. State (9), Clemson (9), Virginia (11), Maryland (13), Georgia Tech (26) and Wake Forest (29). Duke s senior class of Monique Currie, Mistie Williams and Jessica Foley have only suffered losses to Florida State and North Carolina over their ACC career. Monique Currie has led Duke to 114 wins in her four years of playing with the Blue Devils, which is tied with Vicki Krapohl for fifth on the Blue Devil charts. The school record for career victories is 124 by Iciss Tillis and Sheana Mosch. Currie also owns 52 ACC wins, which is fifth on Duke s all-time list. The record is 59 by Tillis. With the loss to UNC on Jan. 29, it broke Duke s 20-0 start to the season equaling the squad for the best start in school history. Monique Currie owns 106 double-figure scoring games over her career, which ranks tied for second on Duke s all-time chart along with Chris Moreland. Alana Beard holds the record with 127 from Duke concluded one of the toughest stretches a Blue Devil squad has ever played in the regular season as the Blue Devils faced top-ranked Tennessee and third-ranked North Carolina in the same week, while also traveling to face Clemson to close out January. Duke also played 10 games in the month of January. The Blue Devils posted their 20th win of the season on Jan. 26 at Clemson, marking the ninth consecutive 20- win season under Gail Goestenkors. A Look At Maryland... Maryland is coming off one of its biggest victories in school history with a overtime win at top-ranked North Carolina on Thursday. The Terrapins own a 22-2, 9-1 league mark and are led by five players averaging double-figure points-- Crystal Langhorne (16.6 points, 9.1 rebounds), Shay Doron (15.5 points, 41 treys), Marissa Coleman (15.0 points, 7.3 rebounds), Laura Harper (10.9 points, 7.1 rebounds) and Kristi Toliver (10.5 points, 77 assists). At the helm of Maryland in her fourth year with the Terrapins is Brenda Frese. The Series With Maryland... Duke and Maryland will meet for the 60th time in school history on Monday. The Blue Devils trail in the series, but have won the last 13 in a row and 16 of the last 17. The Blue Devils knocked off the Terrapins three times last season with the first two victories being very close -- In Durham (60-57) and in College Park (60-49). In the ACC Tournament, the Blue Devils cruised to a victory. In games played in Durham, the Blue Devils have won five in a row and 11 out of the last 12. Trends... Senior Mistie Williams has tied a season high each of the last three games with 16 points. Over the last three contests, she is averaging a team-best 16.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 27.0 minutes. She is averaging 7.7 rebounds over the last seven games. Sophomore Laura Kurz came off the bench in the last game against Maryland and hit two big three-pointers in 16 minutes played. Kurz is hitting 41.3 percent from downtown this season. After scoring nine or less points the last three games, freshman Abby Waner came off the bench to net 14 points on 4-of-7 field goals and 2-of-3 treys against Virginia on Friday. Waner played only 16 minutes in the contest and has scored double-figure points only three times over the last 12 games. Lindsey Harding has dished out 22 assists to only six turnovers the last three games in 107 minutes. Chante Black has 50 blocks on the season in 22 games played. She had 46 blocks last year in 34 games. Jessica Foley has come off the bench to score eight or more points in four out of the last five contests. During those games, Foley has hit 9-of-16 treys. Over the last six games, Chante Black has hit 70.6 percent of her field goals (24-34). In those games Black has averaged 9.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.3 blocks. With six more steals and 13 more assists, Abby Waner will move into fifth place on both all-time lists for Duke freshmen. With Duke s victory at Holy Cross on Jan. 16, Head Coach Gail Goestenkors registered her 350th career win. The Blue Devils own four out of the top nine in the ACC ranking of assist/turnover ratio-- Lindsey Harding (1st, 2.54), Wanisha Smith (4th, 2.19), Monique Currie (5th, 1.74) and Abby Waner (12th, 1.45). through games of 2/11 Lindsey Harding has scored 260 points this season in only 23 games, which is a career-best. She scored 231 as a freshman in 37 games and 230 as a sophomore in 34 contests. Jessica Foley moved into tied for 25th place on the ACC career three-pointers attempted list with 455. She needs six more three-pointers made to move into the ACC list. All-America Monique Currie continues to move up the ACC career scoring list as each game passes. Currie currently owns 1,891 points and is 20th. She needs 27 more points to move into 19th place. Match-Up Of Top-10 Teams... For the second straight time in the Maryland/Duke series, the two squads will play each other while both ranked in the top-10 nationally. The next closest matchup came back on Jan. 9, 1988, in College Park, Md., where Duke was ranked ninth in the Associated Press poll and Maryland was tabbed 14th. The Terrapins pulled out an victory. Inside The Numbers... Two of the top teams in the latest NCAA stats will hit the hardwood on Monday in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils lead an NCAA-most four categories, while the Terrapins lead one category. Duke is in the top-10 of 10 different categories, while Maryland is in the top-10 of nine. Duke ranks No. 1 in scoring offense (89.4) and Maryland is No. 2 (84.3), Duke is No. 1 in field goal percentage (52.3) and Maryland is No. 3 (49.1), Maryland is No. 1 in rebounding margin (14.9) and Duke is No. 2 (11.9), Maryland is No. 2 in threepoint field goal percentage (43.4) and Duke is No. 3 (43.2) and Duke is No. 1 in assists and Maryland is No. 6 (17.8). Summer Connection... The game on Monday will reunite Duke freshman Abby Waner, Maryland sophomore Crystal Langhorne, Maryland freshman Marissa Coleman and Duke Head Coach Gail Goestenkors, as they all led the USA Women s U19 World Championship team to a gold medal over the summer in Tunisia. Waner and Langhorne started all eight contests, while Coleman came off the bench for USA. The team won the gold medal for only the second time in six tries for team On This Date... February 13 Duke has posted a 4-1 record in games played on Feb. 13 over the years, while totaling a 2-1 ledger against Maryland on this date. Last season, the Blue Devils won in College Park, Md., as Monique Currie (14), Wanisha Smith (13) and Wynter Whitley (11) each totaled double-figure points. In 1988, the Blue Devils knocked off Maryland, 81-73, in Durham behind a doubledouble from Chris Moreland (18 points, 14 rebounds). Duke shot 54.0 percent from the field, while receiving 15 points from Paula Andersen and 10 points from Leigh Morgan. Maryland posted an win over Duke in 1983 as Joanne Boyle had 14 points for the Blue Devils. In 2003, Alana Beard scored a game-high 23 points as the Blue Devils shot 53.7 percent from the field against Georgia Tech in an win. USA in the U19 World Championships. Senior Monique Currie has played against Maryland on nine occasions and has averaged 15.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.2 steals in those contests. She posted 24 points and 13 rebounds on Jan. 27, which are her personal bests against the Terrapins. In the last two meetings against Maryland, Chante Black has averaged 15.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 1.3 steals in only 22.5 minutes. She had a doubledouble with 14 points and 13 rebounds to go along with three blocks in only 23 minutes in the ACC Tournament last year versus Maryland. Senior Jessica Foley has struggled from three-point land over her career against Maryland hitting 8-of-32 from behind the arc and has hit only 3-of-20 over the last six games. In all three contests with the Terrapins last year, Wanisha Smith posted double-figure points scoring 14, 13 and 10 points, while dishing out 11 assists in the games. Lindsey Harding has scored a career-high 19 points on two different occasions against Maryland and owns a 4.8 assist average in six career contests with the Terrapins. At The Line... After hitting the worst free throw percentage since 1998 against North Carolina, the Blue Devils responded by hitting 71.1 percent over the last two contests. On the season, second-ranked Duke is shooting 72.6 percent from the free throw line, but against North Carolina in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Jan. 29 the Blue Devils hit only 47.8 (11 of 23) percent from the line. The percentage against UNC was the worst for a Duke team since Jan. 25, 1998 as the Blue Devils shot 47.4 against Clemson. After starting the season hitting a career-best 80.6 percent (25 of 31) over the first 10 games, senior Mistie Williams has hit a slump the last 13 contests hitting 23 of 46 (50.0%). Wins Last Six Years... Duke owns the second-most victories over the last six years among Division I squads-- Connecticut (183-19), Duke (179-20), Tennessee (175-26) - (**through games of 2/10). Duke At Home In In 11 home games this season, the Blue Devils have collected a 10-1 overall record with the loss coming to North Carolina. In those contests, Duke has averaged 90.5 points, hit 53.4 percent from the field, 41.8 percent from downtown, blocked 8.7 shots, dished out 24.1 assists and posted 13.4 steals a game. The Blue Devils have held opponents to 53.1 points, 33.4 percent shooting from the field, 30.1 percent from downtown and forced 22.2 turnovers. Duke has held a 45.5 to 30.1 rebounding margin, while dishing out 265 assists to only committing 181 turnovers. February Birthday s... Four Blue Devils will celebrate birthday s in the month of February - Gale Valley (3rd), Emily Waner (5th), Monique Currie (25th), Gail Goestenkors (26th). Duke is scheduled to play North Carolina on Feb. 25 so the Blue Devils will look to try to get a special birthday present for Currie & Goestenkors. Currie On Wooden Award Midseason List... The John R. Wooden Award committee released its midseason top-20 candidates for the National Player of the Year with senior Monique Currie listed. Currie was a finalist for the award in

After missing the season, junior point guard Lindsey Harding has come back to explode on the national scene as one of the top players in the nation. Harding, a 5-8 native of Houston, Texas, worked on her shooting during the offseason and now has a complete game to go with her excellent defensive and passing skills. On the season, Harding has scored double-figures in 13 of the 23 contests in only 27.2 minutes a game, but has stepped up her play even more since ACC action started. In ACC games, she is averaging 12.8 points, 4.9 assists, 3.9 rebounds, 1.8 steals and owns a 2.6 assist/ turnover ratio. Harding has reached double-figure points in eight of the 10 contests, while hitting 51.7 percent of her field goals and 42.1 percent from downtown. Prior to , Harding had hit only 8-of-42 threepointers in her career at Duke, but she worked very hard on her shot last year and over the summer. In the first 23 games, she has hit 19-of-35 from downtown and is making team-best 54.3 percent from three-point range. On the season, she is averaging 11.3 points, 4.5 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 2.0 steals in only 27.2 minutes. In the NCAA stats as of Feb. 8, Harding ranks seventh in assist/turnover ratio, while in the ACC she is sixth in assists, 10th in steals, 25th in scoring, third in free throw percentage (84.5) and 10th in field goal percentage (53.9). Currie Producing When Out There... Senior Monique Currie has had to get adjusted to playing less minutes this season due to the increase in roster size to 13. Currie is averaging a career-low 26.2 minutes a contest, but is producing when in the game. So far this season, Currie is averaging 14.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.4 steals in 23 starts. The 2005 runner-up for National Player of the Year is also shooting the ball the best of her collegiate years as she is hitting 49.2 percent from downtown. On the year, Currie has hit 30 of 61 treys for a 49.2 percentage, which ranks second in the ACC. Over the first three years of college, she hit only 44 of 158 threepoint attempts for a 27.8 percentage. In an average of 40 minutes a contest, Currie is totaling 22.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.2 steals. Currie has played her best this season against ranked opponents as she has averaged 17.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.0 steals. Last Game Versus Maryland... Chante Black and Lindsey Harding both scored career highs with 19 points as Duke defeated No. 6 Maryland on Jan. 8, Monique Currie added 18 for Duke, including 13 in the second half. Harding and Black combined to hit 11- of-11 from the field in the first half as Duke held a lead. Currie did most of her damage in the second half, including 10 down the stretch run of the second half. The two teams played relatively even the first five minutes of the game and after Maryland held an lead, Duke went on an 8-0 run to push their lead to Maryland fought back to within a basket at at the 8:30 mark of the first half, but the Blue Devils exploded on a 23-6 run to push the lead to with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Laura Kurz hit a threepointer as time expired in the first half. Maryland slowly chipped away at Duke s lead in the second half, closing to within 11 at seven minutes into the half. Harding hit a shot to give Duke a lead and neither team scored for almost three minutes. Two Maryland three-pointers further chipped Duke s lead to nine at the eight minute media timeout as the game stood at After Shay Doron closed the gap to 10 points a the six-minute mark, Currie took over. Duke went on an 11-0 run as Currie scored seven in the run and after the four minute media timeout, Duke pushed its lead to 20 at Harding finished 7-of-9 from the field and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Duke, the highest-scoring team in the country, was held about 13 points under its average but held Maryland, the nation s second-leading scoring team, over 20 points under its season average. Last Time Out... Mistie Williams scored 16 points while shooting 8-of-9 from the field as the No. 2 Duke defeated Virginia Friday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Williams dominated the paint for the Blue Devils while Abby Waner sparked Duke off the bench by scoring 14 points including a pair of three-pointers. Lindsey Harding paced Duke s offense by scoring 12 points and dishing out five assists against just one turnover. Chante Black joined Williams with a dominant inside game scoring 11 points, grabbing nine rebounds and rejecting four shots from the Cavaliers. Black and Williams scored the Blue Devils first 10 points helping build an early 12-4 lead and after Waner scored on a lay-up and three-pointer, Duke pushed the lead to double figures at just over half way through the first half. The Blue Devils maintained a two-to-one advantage as Emily Waner hit a three-pointer to make the game and Laura Kurz hit a triple just before halftime to make the score in Duke s favor at the break. Virginia came out strong in the second half, outscoring Duke 9-4 to bring the game within six at before the Blue Devils turned it on. Duke outscored Virginia 22-8 in the next five minutes as Abby Waner scored four straight and gave Duke its first 20 point lead at Jessica Foley then dominated the game for the next few minutes, scoring eight straight points for Duke to help keep the lead around the 20 point mark with seven minutes remaining. The game then turned into a free throw contest as Duke scored its next seven points from the line before Alison Bales hit a jumper at the 3:18 mark to give the Blue Devils an advantage. Sophomore Wanisha Smith was rewarded with her stellar play of late with starts over the last seven games. In those starts, Smith has averaged 8.3 points, 3.9 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals. She has hit 51.1 percent of her field goals and 55.6 percent from downtown in the seven starting nods. Chante Black has started the past four straight games and has eight total starts this season. In those starts, Black is hitting 72.2 percent of her field goals and blocked nine shots. She has scored double-figures in seven of 10 ACC contests, while averaging 9.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.3 blocks on the season. Against Ranked Opponents... Duke owns a record of in games against ranked opponents under Head Coach Gail Goestenkors, but over the last five years the Blue Devils are against ranked foes. 7 Duke Women s Basketball Game Notes Maryland at Duke 7 In and , the Blue Devils went 16-0 during the ACC regular season and had an ACC-record 51-game win streak versus ACC foes from Since , Duke has dominated ACC action, notching a regular season record. The Blue Devils won five straight ACC Tournament titles from and have won the ACC regular season title five consecutive years. The Blue Devils have won 40 out of the last 43 home ACC contests in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke went undefeated in ACC play at home in , , , and under Coach G. The only losses were to UNC ( ) and FSU ( ). NCAA Stats... The sixth edition of the NCAA stats were posted on Feb. 7, and the Blue Devils are once again dominating the categories as Duke ranks No. 1 in four of them-- scoring offense (89.4), scoring margin (34.1), field goal percentage (52.3) and assists (22.5). The Blue Devils are second in rebound margin (11.9), third in three-point field goal percentage (43.2), third in field goal percentage defense (34.2) and second in blocked shots (7.5). In the individual rankings, Alison Bales is 11th in blocks (3.0). High Scoring Affairs... The Blue Devils have kicked off the season with some very impressive offensive outputs. In 23 contests, the team has scored 90 or more points 11 times, which has tied a school record. The Blue Devils have hit the 100-point mark on six occasions which is tied for the most times in school history ( ). Duke also leads the nation in points per game and scoring margin. Foley Named Academic All-District III... For the second straight year, Duke University senior Jessica Foley has been selected to the second team of the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All- District III University Division Women s Basketball Team released on Feb. 9. Members of the College Sports Information Director s of America (CoSIDA) selected the first, second and third teams. Foley, a native of Wodonga, Victoria Australia, has registered a 3.32 grade point average as an Environmental Science major. Simons Returns To Coaching... Head Coach Gail Goestenkors husband, Mark Simons, has returned to coaching as he has taken over as an assistant coach for the Auburn women s basketball team for the rest of the campaign. Simons was the head men s basketball coach at Elon College from Most Viewed Games On ESPN2... The Tennessee at Duke contest on Jan. 23 became the third most-viewed women s college basketball regular season game ever on ESPN2 with a 0.89 rating along with 794, 799 house holds. Cameron Indoor Stadium now owns the No. 1 and No. 3 games in ESPN2 s history as the Feb. 1, 2003, contest against Connecticut brought in a 1.45 rating along with 1,225,696 house holds. Duke Women s Basketball Head Coach Gail Goestenkors announced on Feb. 6 that freshmen Brittany Mitch and Keturah Jackson will redshirt the campaign after suffering early-season injuries. Both Mitch and Jackson will have four years of eligibility remaining with the Blue Devils. Mitch, a native of McLean, Va., played in Duke s first three games to start the season before suffering a hip injury. The 6-2 wing went on to have surgery on Dec. 2 and has yet to return to practice with the Blue Devils. In the three contests, Mitch averaged 3.0 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals, while hitting 50.0 percent of her field goals in 14.3 minutes. On any given night the Blue Devils could throw out a different starting lineup on the court as Duke returns seven players who have started for the Blue Devils over the last two years. Duke is the only team in NCAA Division I who has five players who started 30 or more games last season. In fact, the Blue Devils return six players who started 30 or more games with the return of Lindsey Harding, who started 33 games in Overall, Monique Currie (36), Mistie Williams (36), Wanisha Smith (35), Jessica Foley (32) and Alison Bales (33) each are returning starters from a year ago. A total of 27 teams in NCAA Division I returned all five starters from Sharp-Shooters... For the first time in school history, Duke opened the season hitting 50.0 percent of its field goals in each of the first four games before shooting 40.9 percent against Auburn on Nov. 27 and 47.8 at Texas. The Blue Devils came back to shoot 50.0 percent or better in eight straight contests before hitting a season-low 32.8 percent at Georgia Tech on Jan. 11. Duke has now shot 50.0 percent or better in 16 of the 23 contests. Duke is shooting a whopping 52.5 percent from the field and 43.4 percent from three-point land. Senior Monique Currie is moving her way up the Duke and ACC career charts and currently owns 1,891 points over her four years. With her 20 points at Boston College, Currie moved past Sue Harnett (1,785) for third place on Duke s scoring chart. Among many other career lists at Duke, Currie is sixth on the steals chart with 213 and fourth in rebounds (802). Coach G Named USA Coach of the Year USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team head coach Gail Goestenkors of Duke University (N.C.) was named the 2005 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year after piloting the USA U19 women to the 2005 FIBA U19 World Championship and an overall record of 13-1 on the summer, USA Basketball announced this week. As recipient of USA Basketball s National Coach of the Year award, which was selected by the USA Basketball Executive Committee, Goestenkors has been nominated by USA Basketball for the U.S. Olympic Committee s 2005 (USOC) National Coach of the Year award, which will be announced by the USOC at a later date. Goestenkors guided the U.S. to the gold medal and a perfect 8-0 record at the U19 Worlds in Tunis, Tunisia, after posting a 5-1 record, including a 4-0 slate and the gold medal at the International Sports Invitational, during U19 World Championship preparations. Looking Up... The Blue Devils own one of the tallest squads in the nation this season with an average height of ( feet) inches. It ranks only behind Tennessee (73.55) and Auburn (73.18), while the next closest ACC team is Florida State tied for 13th with a ledger. Young Guns... The Blue Devils boast one of the most talented teams in the nation but also are one of the youngest squads with four freshmen and four sophomores on the roster. Air Force stands as the youngest team in the nation with 13 freshmen and sophomores, but Duke is tied for 32nd with eight. In ranking the ACC schools, the Blue Devils are second behind Florida State (10). Duke Picked No. 1 In ACC... For the sixth time over the last eight years, the Duke Women s Basketball team has been picked No. 1 in the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) poll as the Blue Devils received 30 of 40 first-place votes, determined by a vote of the media and head coaches. North Carolina, who received 10 first-place votes, followed the Blue Devils in the balloting, while Maryland finished third. NC State and Boston College were selected to finish in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Florida State was sixth, followed in the seventh and eighth slots by the Virginia Tech and Virginia. Wake Forest finished in ninth place while Georgia Tech, Miami and Clemson rounded out the poll. In balloting for the preseason All-Conference team, senior Monique Currie of Duke and Tamara James (Miami) were named to the team along with Ivory Latta (UNC), Shay Doron (MD), Crystal Langhorne (MD) and Erlana Larkins (UNC). Duke University Head Coach Gail Goestenkors announced prior to the season that seniors Monique Currie, Jessica Foley and Mistie Williams have been named captains for the campaign. Duke Adds Cheek & Mitchell For For the seventh straight year, Blue Devil Women s Basketball Head Coach Gail Goestenkors has brought in a top-10 ranked recruiting class as she will welcome two of the top players in the nation to the Duke University campus in the fall of Bridgette Mitchell of Hightstown, N.J. and Joy Cheek of Charlotte, N.C. each have signed national letters of intent to play basketball at Duke. The class has been tabbed seventh-best in the nation by the Blue Star Report. The Blue Devils are listed behind Connecticut, Rutgers, Purdue, Stanford, Oklahoma and Southern California. Duke s class of two signings ranks No. 1 in the nation, when ranking classes of two or fewer players. Mitchell, a 6-0 wing from The Peddie School, has been listed No. 7 in the class of 2006 by the Blue Star Report. She is coming off a junior campaign where she averaged 14.1 points, 10.5 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 2.6 assists leading her team to a 23-3 mark. Mitchell earned All-State First Team, Street & Smith s Second Team All-America, USA Today Junior All-America and All-Conference accolades last year. Cheek, a 6-1 forward from South Mecklenburg H.S., has been ranked 13th in the class of 2006 by the All-Star Girls Report. In listing the wing/forwards in the class, Cheek was second in the report. She was named Street & Smith s Fifth Team All- America, USA Today Junior All-America and AP First Team All-State as a junior. Cheek averaged 18.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 2.5 blocks as she led her squad to a 25-5 and a state semifinal appearance.

12 Gail Goestenkor ors Head Coach 14th Year At Duke In her 13 years at Duke University, Gail Goestenkors has helped lead the Blue Devils from relative obscurity to national prominence. Known as Coach G to players, coaches, fans and student supporters, Goestenkors has raised the level of the women s basketball program at Duke to new heights. Today, because of Coach G, Duke is mentioned in the same breath with the other elite programs in women s college basketball. Since arriving at Duke in 1992, Goestenkors has accomplished feats that no other women s basketball coach in school history has been able to achieve. To put her success in perspective, Goestenkors has four more winning seasons (12) than there were in the 17 years prior to her arrival in Durham. The 1996, 98, 99, 2002, 2003 and 2004 ACC Coach of the Year (Duke s only multiple winner of the award and one of just two ACC coaches to earn it six times), Goestenkors led the Blue Devils to their first appearances in the Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, Final Four and National Championship game. Along with capturing Duke s first ACC Tournament Championship, Goestenkors Blue Devil squads have broken numerous school, ACC and NCAA records, as well as setting a new standard for women s basketball at Duke and in the ACC. Continuing to build upon her well-earned reputation as one of the top college basketball coaches, Goestenkors led Duke to its fifth-straight ACC Regular Season title and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance in The Blue Devils concluded the season with a 31-5 overall record and were ranked No. 1 in the nation for three straight weeks. For the season, Duke blocked an NCAA-record 267 shots in a year where it was possibly Goestenkors best coaching job of her career after losing three starters off of last year s team. If the past seven seasons show anything, they show how effective Goestenkors winning approach has been. Goestenkors record for highest winning percentage (.782) in school history offers evidence of her success: 333 total wins; a 80-7 mark at home against non-conference opponents; a record in NCAA Tournament play; five straight 30-win seasons; ten 20-plus win seasons in the past 11 years; five ACC Tournament Championships; seven ACC regular season titles; and three NCAA Final Four appearances. Such accomplishments have not gone unnoticed by her peers in college basketball. Aside from winning ACC Coach of the Year in 1996, 98, 99, 2002, 2003 and 2004, Goestenkors captured the Victor Award in 1999 as the National Coach of the Year, as well as being selected the 2000 Basketball Times National Coach of the Year, the 2002 GBallmag.com National Coach of the Year and 2003 Naismith, WBCA/Rawlings and Victor Award as the National Coach of the Year. Her coaching is so respected that Goestenkors was named to the USA Basketball Collegiate Committee in the summer of 2001, was an assistant coach on the gold medal winning 2002 USA World Championship team, was an assistant coach on the gold medal winning 2004 USA Olympic team and was the coach of the 2005 USA World Championship gold medal team. When Goestenkors came to Duke in 1992, she found a women s program hoping to establish itself as a winner while the Blue Devil faithful were in the midst of celebrating the second consecutive NCAA Championship won by coach Mike Krzyzewski and the men s basketball team. Hoping to mirror the success of Coach K and his program, Goestenkors wanted to give Duke fans reason to cheer for her women s team. While success stories do not just happen overnight, it did not take long for Goestenkors to establish a winning attitude with the Blue Devils. In her inaugural season Duke started out strong with seven straight wins, which at that time was the third longest streak in school history. The squad, which featured only eight healthy players, broke four program records during the course of the season. Goestenkors Year-By-Year YEAR-BY-YEAR RECORD Year Record ACC Record Total (.791) (.750) Great strides were taken in becoming a successful program in Goestenkors second season. That year, , Duke finished with a record for its first winning season since Also, the Blue Devils won seven ACC contests, the most wins by the school in nearly a decade. The next season proved to be the emergence of Duke women s basketball under Goestenkors onto the national scene. At the time, the Blue Devils set school records for most wins in a season (22) and ACC victories (10). After Duke s first ever appearance in the ACC Championship game, Goestenkors and the Blue Devils appeared in the NCAA Tournament for only the second time in program history. Duke earned its first national ranking since 1989, while Goestenkors was named 1995 WBCA District III Coach of the Year. In , Goestenkors and the Blue Devils wanted to prove that the previous year was no fluke and that Duke women s basketball would be a major force in the years to come. Finishing the year 26-7, 12-4 in the ACC, the Blue Devils had back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time ever at Duke. Making their second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Blue Devils hosted first and second round games at Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first time since For her efforts, Goestenkors was recognized as ACC Coach of the Year after leading Duke to a No. 13 ranking in the final polls from both USA Today and the Associated Press. Throughout the season the Blue Devils were a mainstay in the polls, peaking at 13th nationally and finishing the season at 22nd nationally. At the end of the season, Goestenkors was named head coach of the USA Basketball Jones Cup Team, which consists of American college all-stars who compete against other nations. The team went on to capture a silver medal in Taiwan. Three former Blue Devils, Tyish Hall, Kira Orr and VanGorp, joined Goestenkors in representing Duke on that squad. Following several years of success with the Blue Devils, Goestenkors reached some personal milestones in the season. In a win on December 6 against Ohio in the Duke Women s Basketball Classic, Goestenkors notched her 100th career victory. Ironically, the win came against Marsha Reall, who was Goestenkors collegiate coach at Saginaw Valley State. Goestenkors also finished the season with at least 20 wins for the third time in her career, the most for one coach in school history. Once again the Blue Devils enjoyed a highly successful season under Goestenkors, going 24-8 and advancing to the Elite Eight in NCAA Tournament action for the first time in school history. Of course, the next year Goestenkors led Duke all the way to the championship game. It proved to be another step in the rise of the women s basketball program under Goestenkors. The drive and passion for winning that she has instilled in her Blue Devil teams has always been with Goestenkors, dating back to her days as a player. As an undergraduate at Saginaw Valley State, Goestenkors played for former Purdue head coach Reall. In her four years at Saginaw, Goestenkors earned NAIA All-America honors and was named conference MVP, as well as being selected to the Academic All-Conference Team. After earning a physical education degree from Saginaw Valley State in 1985, Goestenkors served as a graduate assistant for Iowa State during the season. From there, Goestenkors moved to Purdue, where she would spend the next six years as an assistant coach. With such an energetic, positive approach to the game, Goestenkors will continue to lead Duke as it takes its place among the nation s giants in women s college basketball. 18 Game 1-- Penn State 67 #1 Duke 93 Four Blue Devils scored in double figures and all 11 that played scored as the No. 1 Duke women s basketball team (1-0) opened the season with a road victory defeating Penn State (0-1) Friday night here at the Bryce Jordan Center. The two teams played back and fourth the first 10 minutes of the game as Duke held a lead before going on an 11-0 run to push the lead to with 6:19 left in the first half. Jessica Foley scored five points in that run and Alison Bales four. The Nittany Lions then went on a 10-4 spurt of their own to cut the lead to and the two teams played evenly for the rest of the first half as before Duke pushed its lead to at the break. Lindsey Harding hit a lay-up and Abby Waner a three-pointer to open the second half and the Blue Devils never looked back, opening up a 21 point lead on another Waner triple less than three minutes into the second half. Duke s biggest lead was 31 points after a Monique Currie layup with 7:04 left in the game and Penn State would never cut the lead to less than 20 as Duke finished with a 26 point victory. Waner, who became the eighth player under coach Gail Goestenkors to start her first game as a Blue Devil, and Bales scored 15 points apiece while Currie added 12 and Harding 10 for the Blue Devils. Wanisha Smith and Mistie Williams each scored nine points and Chante Black scored eight. Williams added nine rebounds while Waner also recorded six assists and six steals in the contest. Smith added five steals and four assists while Harding and Brittany Mitch each dished out four assists, as well. Karmela Gissendanner led the way for the Nittany Lions with 19 points Duke Women s Basketball Box Scores Game 2-- Old Dominion 56 #1 Duke 93 Six players scored during a first-half 21-0 run as the No. 1 Duke women s basketball team (2-0) handed Old Dominion (0-1) its worst ever here at the Ted Constant Convocation Center Sunday afternoon in a victory. Duke scored the games first five points and the Lady Monarchs closed the gap to 5-4 before the 21-0 spurt gave Duke a 26-4 led half way through the first stanza. Duke held a 20 point lead for the remainder of the first half as they went into the break with a lead. Old Dominion cut the lead to under 20 briefly to open the second half before a 16-2 run gave Duke a advantage. Freshman Abby Waner scored eight points in that run en route to a team-high 17 in the contest. A Laura Kurz three-pointer with 5:44 left gave Duke an lead, the biggest in the game for Duke until Waner scored five points in the last 42 seconds to give Duke a victory, the program s 550 th all-time. Waner hit 7-of-9 shots from the floor and 2-of-4 from three-point range in just 19 minutes of action. No Blue Devil played more than 25 minutes and all 11 active players saw at least 13 minutes of action. Waner was joined in double-figures by Lindsey Harding with 16, Kurz with 11 and senior Monique Currie just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Wanisha Smith dished out 11 assists for Duke, the fourth-highest total in school history, as the Blue Devils finished the game with 28 and all 11 players that saw time not only scored and had an assist. Defensively, the Blue Devils had 12 steals and 10 blocks as Smith led the way with three steals and Chante Black had four blocks and Alison Bales three. Game 3-- * AP Ranking Fairfield 44 #1 Duke 110 In what is becoming a season of big runs, No. 1 Duke (3-0) used a first half 32-0 run to pull away from Fairfield (0-2) and a 17-0 second-half run to finish the game as Duke won Tuesday. Senior Monique Currie led the way for Duke with 21 points and 12 rebounds while freshman Abby Waner scored 16 points, had six assists and five rebounds. In all, six Blue Devils scored in double figures as Mistie Williams and Carrem Gay scored 14 apiece, Alison Bales added 13 and Chante Black 12. Duke assisted 31 times on its 44 field goals as Wanisha Smith led the way with eight and Lindsey Harding added seven. Duke again had a stellar defensive performance as the Blue Devils recorded 17 steals and 11 blocks in the game. Black and Bales combined for seven blocks while Harding, Smith and Waner each had three steals to lead Duke. The Stags came out of the gate red-hot, hitting two of their first three shots en route to an early 8-6 lead. Duke s big first-half run over the next 7:15 gave them a 38-8 lead. 19 Game 4-- Arkansas State 56 #1 Duke 110 All 11 Blue Devils scored while Laura Kurz and Lindsey Harding each had a game-high 19 points as the No. 1 Duke defeated Arkansas State (2-1) Monique Currie had five points in the first four minutes as Duke opened up an early 14-4 lead by the first media timeout. Arkansas State s Rudy Sims hit a three-pointer before Duke would go on a 12-0 run to make the score 26-7 with 11:30 left in the first half. Carrem Gay scored six straight points in the run. Kurz would hit a three-pointer to give Duke its first 20 point lead at and a late first-half 15-0 run would give Duke a lead as Duke held a lead at the break. Harding scored nine points in the run for Duke. Arkansas State held the Duke lead near 30 for the first part of the second half but after two layups from Gay and a pair of free throws from Kurz, Duke pushed the lead to 38 at at the 12:00 mark of the second half. The Longhorns took a brief lead early in the second half, but it would prove to be their last lead of the game. 20 Game 7-- TCU 52 #2 Duke 92 No. 2 Duke used Sean Dockery s 45-foot gamewinner over Virginia Tech as inspiration to practice their long-range shots over the past two days. It paid off as Lindsey Harding hit a 35-foot shot as time ran out in the otherwise dismal first half and the Blue Devils would go on outscore the TCU Horned Frogs (2-5) by 31 in the second half for a victory. Up just one point at 28-27, sophomore Laura Kurz hit a three-pointer with less than a minute remaining in the first half and then got a steal and lay-up just 20 seconds later before Harding s buzzer-beater gave Duke an 8-0 run to end the first stanza up Nine Blue Devils scored at least eight points as Kurz led the way with 15 points, including a 3-of-6 performance from behind the arc. Alison Bales and Monique Currie scored 11 apiece for Duke while Chante Black, Carrem Gay and Wanisha Smith each had nine and Jessica Foley, TCU led the game for the first 11 minutes of the game before Kurz nailed a three-pointer to put Duke up 10-9 eight minutes into the first half. The 86 point victory is the largest in Duke history. Senior Monique Currie scored nine points in the run to open the game en route to a game-high 18 to go along with seven rebounds and six assists. Junior Alison Bales played a perfect game, shooting 5-of-5 from the field and 8-of-8 from the line for 18 points and she also grabbed 12 rebounds and had seven blocks. Chante Black tied a career high with 16 points and eight rebounds for Duke (10-0), which will face San Diego in the championship game Friday night. 22 Game 13-- Florida State 68 #2 Duke 87 Monique Currie recorded the school s second triple-double with 21 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists as the No. 2 Duke Blue Devils defeated Florida State Thursday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The game marked Currie s third 20-point performance of the season while her rebound and assist marks were season highs. The only other triple-double in school history came nearly 20 years ago as Katie Meier had 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Manhattan on March 3, Alison Bales just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds while Mistie Williams scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds of her own with an impressive 7-of-9 performance from the field. Lindsey Harding score 12 points for the Blue Devils while Abby Waner had seven points and five rebounds to round out the starting line-up. Wanisha Smith led the way off the bench for Duke with eight points and three assists. Currie scored the game s first eight points in the first two minutes of action. After Duke held a 14-2 lead after four minutes of action, the rest of the game was relatively close. The Blue Devils made only 21- of-64 shots against Georgia Tech s matchup zone. The Yellow Jackets (11-4, 0-3) didn t give up much on the outside, either, holding Duke to 7-of-23 from 3-point range. The Blue Devils went ahead for good on Abby Waner s three-pointer less than three minutes into the second half. But they struggled to put Georgia Tech away, failing to make a field goal after Lindsey Harding s three-pointer with 6:27 to go. The Duke women s basketball team played at Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first time in two weeks after a four-game road trip and celebrated the occasion by defeated local rival N.C. State Thursday night in ACC action. Monique Currie led the Blue Devils with 20 points while Chante Black (11) and Lindsey Harding also reached double figures. All 11 players that saw action scored as Abby Waner added nine, Alison Bales and Wanisha Smith six apiece, Jessica Foley five, Mistie Williams four and Emily Waner, Laura Kurz and Carrem Gay two each. Harding added a game-high seven assists while Williams reached double figures in rebounds with 10. 24 Game 19-- #1 Tennessee 53 #2 Duke 75 Lindsey Harding scored a team-high 15 points and added a career-high eight steals as the No. 2 Duke Blue Devils crushed No. 1 Tennessee Harding led five Blue Devils in double figures as Monique Currie scored 13 and Mistie Williams, Abby Waner and Chante Black each scored 10. The game was even for the first nine minutes as a Black jumper tied the game at 14 at the 11 minute mark of the first half before Duke held the Lady Vols to just one basket the next six minutes and went on an 11-2 run to pull ahead The Lady Vols fought back and brought the game to within a basket at with three minutes left in the first half before Duke ended the half on a 7-2 run. Currie scored four in the half s final run to give Duke a halftime advantage. Tennessee brought the game back to within five by scoring two of the first three baskets in the second half but Duke responded again as Williams hit two layups and Waner hit a huge three-pointer to put Duke up on a 14-4 run just seven minutes into the second half. Duke used a 22-2 first-half run to take control and equal its perfect start in , the last time it reached the Final Four. The Blue Devils played sluggishly for the first 12 minutes. Monique Currie, Duke s leading scorer, missed all four of her shots and when Clemson s Maxienne White hit a three-pointer, the Blue Devils were up just with 7:51 to go. A timeout got the Blue Devils refocused, though, and they set off on their game-changing run. Mistie Williams started the surge with an inside basket with 6:57 to go before halftime. Currie had two foul shots and a 3-pointer, her only field goal in a 1-for-7 half. By the time Harding finished it off with a three-point play and a short jumper, Duke led with 1:29 left. The Blue Devils turned things up on defense, too. Clemson was 0-of-6 and committed six of its 14 firsthalf turnovers during the stretch. Game 21-- * AP Ranking #3 North Carolina 74 #2 Duke 70 North Carolina scored on 14 of its last 16 possessions and Duke shot 11-of-23 from the free throw line as the Tar Heels defeated the Blue Devils The Tar Heels won their fourth straight in the series after sweeping the season series last year. Duke had won the previous 12 meetings with North Carolina. North Carolina started quickly out of the gate, scoring the game s first six points. Duke fought back and tied the game at 14 and 16 before taking control of the first half. Duke pushed the lead to five at and after UNC closed the gap to one at 23-22, Duke rattled off a 15-0 run. An Abby Waner three-pointer in that run gave Duke its first 10 point lead at and Duke held a double-digit lead through halftime, up at the midway point. After an Alison Bales lay-up mid way through the second half, Duke held a lead but would hit just one free throw down the stretch as UNC tied the game at 62 with four minutes left, got its first lead of the half at and quickly pushed the lead to Monique Currie hit a three-pointer to pull Duke within one and Mistie Williams countered a Tar Heel lay-up with one of her own to make it North Carolina. 25 Game 22-- #2 Duke 73 Virginia Tech 62 Monique Currie scored 21 points and No. 2 Duke used a 19-3 run late in the first half to take control as it defeated Virginia Tech Monday night here at Cassell Coliseum. Mistie Williams scored 13 of her 16 points in the second half and Chante Black added 10 points for Duke, which improved to 21-1 and 8-1 in the ACC. Duke scored the game s first seven points as Currie hit a three-pointer and a lay-up in the first three minutes of the contest. After two free throws from Black at the 16:31 mark, Duke wouldn t score again for nearly six minutes as Virginia Tech clawed its way back in and take an 11-9 lead. The game would play even for the next few minutes with ties at nine, 11 and 15 before Tech took a lead at the 8:20 mark of the first half. Duke then woke up and went on a 19-3 run over the next seven minutes as Duke eventually took a lead into the lockerroom at halftime. The two teams played relatively even the first part of the second half before a 10-0 Tech run cut Duke s lead to eight minutes in. Duke responded with a 7-0 run of its own to push the lead back to 14 at and Duke looked in good shape with four minutes remaining as the Blue Devils led at the final media timeout. Tech would not go away, however, as a 9-0 run in under two minutes cut Duke s lead to before Currie and Williams would put an end to the upset bid and give Duke a victory.
