1 University of Richmond Field Hockey 2002 Welcome to Richmond Field Hockey! As second-year head coach, I have the exciting opportunity to build the hockey program here at Richmond. Spider hockey is under construction! The 2002 season marks the beginning of phase one of our rebuilding project. Phase one included the construction of a state of the art astro-turf hockey facility and our first season competing in the Atlantic 10 Conference. As members of the A-10, we now have the opportunity to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. In phase I, my student-athletes embraced the philosophy of living the life of a champion. They demonstrated personal sacrifice and selflessness by placing the goals of the team ahead of the individual. The Spider field hockey players committed themselves to a strong work ethic that included year round training, a high standard of fitness and the responsibility to become a student of the game. Their dedication and hard work paid off and is reflected in the many firsts that the 2001 Spiders brought to the Richmond field hockey program. The Spiders began the season with the best start in the program s history (5-0), recorded the most wins in a single season, received votes in the Top 20 ranking poll, and finished fourth in the conference which earned them a spot in the conference playoffs. As we enter phase two we welcome 11 new players who are proud to be members of my first recruiting class at Richmond. They are skillful, fit and excited to join us in our journey to continue to raise the bar for Spiders field hockey. The 2002 Spiders have taken ownership of this program and expect to continue to rewrite the history of Richmond field hockey. This group of 20 young women is prepared to focus small and dream big in their quest to capture a conference title and birth to the NCAA tournament. I eagerly anticipate the 2002 season along with all of its highs, lows, thrills and fun as we begin our quest to become the 2002 Atlantic 10 Champions. It s time to bring it home! 2 Richmond Field Hockey successfully completed its first season of Atlantic 10 competition in 2001 and earned a fourth seed in the conference championships. The Spiders recorded the best start in program history this past fall when they began the 2001 campaign, 5-0. The previous record was 4-0, set by the 1976 Westhampton College varsity field hockey team. Senior Jill Murphy was named to the All-Tournament team and was fourth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring in 2002 with 18 points. Her 10 assists were a league-best. Heather Rice had a record-breaking senior season in She was named Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and scored a conference-best 14 goals and 33 points. Rice broke two of the Spiders all-time records last season becoming the career all-time points leader (133) and all-time goals scored leader (61). Rice was a second-team Regional All- American selection. Richmond s schedule is consistently one of the toughest in the country. In the last five seasons, the Spiders have faced 40 opponents ranked in the top 20. In 2000, three Spider players (Cathy Burgess, Brooke Fuller, Stacey Smith) were named to the 2000 NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad. During its tenure in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) from , Richmond had six players selected first-team all-caa and twelve second team selections. 7 As seniors, we are enthusiastically anticipating the 2002 season in large part because we have the chance to lead the team to an A-10 championship and NCAA berth on our home turf. The returning players are ready to combine their experience with the surge of new talent in order to see our hard work pay off. As seniors, we have set the tone for how a true athete maintains confidence, practices hard, and works when no one is watching, now all we need is the trophy. IT'S TIME. 7

8 UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND FIELD HOCKEY 2002 Field Hockey Outlook and 11 newcomers are hungry for more in 2002, namely an Atlantic 10 Title. With the graduation of five seniors, including Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year Heather Rice, Bradley has some holes to fill. Anytime that you lose a player of Heather s caliber, it is going to be difficult to fill their role, Bradley said of Richmond s all-time points and goals scored leader. However, we have many players who are eager and ready to step up. There are a host of new faces on the Spider sideline this season, and Bradley is looking to her upperclassmen for leadership. With the 11 newcomers, the five seniors will be expected to be role models, both on and off the playing field. FORWARDS Bradley returns experience at the forward positions with a number of returning players that bring a combination of speed, intensity and aggressiveness to the front row. Senior Jill Murphy led the team and the conference in assists (10) last season, while also posting a team second-best 18 Kristin Gavin 8 After a season of firsts, including an inaugural year of competing in the Atlantic 10 Conference, secondyear head coach Ange Bradley is excited about the coming season. Last year was a good learning opportunity and experience, said Bradley. We were able to see the level of play that is needed in order to be competitive in the A-10. The Spiders garnered a mark and a fourth-place conference finish last fall but Bradley and her team of 10 returnees Tricia Garrison

9 points. She honed her skills this past summer for the USFHA s United Summer League team, the Tidewater Tempest. Jill has taken her game to a new level, Bradley notes. Her self-confidence has improved and she has increased her knowledge of the game. Jill has the ability to elude defenders and has an outstanding vision of the playing field. After a set-back from an injury in the fall, junior Brittney Parrish returned in the spring for an outstanding campaign. Parrish saw action in 13 games in the fall, earning the starting nod in nine of those contests. She recorded 11 points on five goals and one assist. Brittney has improved her stick skills and will provide a strong presence in our starting line-up, Bradley remarks. Additionally, Bradley will be looking to redshirt senior Tricia Garrison and sophomore Laura Hur to contribute on attack. Garrison, who saw action in the midfield last fall, made a switch to the front five during the spring and has adapted quickly and easily to her new position. Tricia has a strong work ethic, says Bradley. That has enabled her transition to the forward position to be an easy one. After earning the start in nine contests a season ago, Hur brings familiarity and experience to the attack. Also looking to contribute valuable minutes off the bench will be sophomore Danica Haupt, who enjoyed a good spring season. Freshmen Whitney Wells and graduate student Melissa Yuppa, who played three years at Duke, are expected to play a role. Wells brings the ability to score, Bradley notes, while Yuppa s three years of ACC experience coupled with her tremendous work ethic, give Richmond a new flair on the attack line. MIDFIELD Seniors Sarah Adams and Kristin Gavin and sophomore Amy Wilson will anchor the midfield for the Spiders. Sarah may be the most knowledgeable player on the field, Bradley comments. She is a smart player who makes others look better with her exceptional play. Gavin brings a wealth of experience to her role, as both a player and a mentor. She earned 19 starts in 20 appearances a season ago, notching one goal. Gavin along with Adams will be looked upon by Bradley to help guide the underclassman. Wilson, who earned 18 starts as a freshman, enhanced her game dramatically in the spring and will be a major contributor in Freshman Allie Howard is expected to challenge for a starting job this fall. The new addition brings, what Bradley calls, a great passion for the game. DEFENSE The key to Richmond s defense will be the ability of a host of freshmen to adjust to the college game. The elder member of the unit is junior Lydia Decembrino. Decembrino played a significant role in the backfield a season ago starting 19 of 20 contests. Joining her in the backfield will be sophomore Amy Wilson, who had a strong spring season after her transition to the college level last season, and senior Cathy Burgess. Burgess, Bradley notes, is the steady eddie of the team, bringing a wonderful attitude and perspective to the field. Freshmen Ashley Barnes, Lesley Russell, Michelle La Force, Colleen Wevodau and Jessica Stern will be looked up to step to the forefront. Freshman Michelle Swartz will immediately see playing time as the only goaltender on the roster. Swartz comes from a program of success in Severna Park Senior High School in Maryland, a three-time state champion. Michelle has an extremely high work ethic having participated in the Naval Academy boot camp (ROTC program), Bradley says of the incoming freshman. She is an outstanding leader that possesses leadership and conviction, qualities you normally don t see in a 17- year old. Jill Murphy 9OUTLOOK

The institutions that make up the Atlantic 10 Conference are committed to providing a broad-based, competitive athletic environment without sacrificing the high ideals of scholarship and sportsmanship. The University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph s University, Temple University, and Xavier University each offer a rich blend of proud academic and athletic traditions to form an impressive athletic alliance. If a conference bases its success on the achievements of its student-athletes and teams, then the season was successful. That success was highlighted by six men s and three women s basketball teams earning postseason bids. On the men s side, Xavier earned the Atlantic 10 s automatic bid to the NCAA Men s Basketball Tournament, while Dayton, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph s, and Temple all earned NIT berths. Temple finished third in the NIT and Richmond advanced to the quarterfinal round. Temple s women basketball team earned its first NCAA berth since 1989, while George Washington and Saint Joseph s represented the Conference in the WNIT. In baseball, the Atlantic 10 sent two teams to the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever as George Washington and Richmond garnered bids, with the Spiders falling one game short of the College World Series. Dayton garnered the automatic bid to the NCAA Women s Soccer Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16; Massachusetts sent three teams to NCAA tournament play as UMass teams qualified in field hockey, softball, and men s soccer. Richmond sent teams to the men s and women s tennis tournaments; Xavier participated in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament; Temple played in the NCAA Women s Lacrosse Tournament; and Rhode Island represented the Atlantic 10 in the NCAA Golf Tournament. In all, 320 teams have represented the Atlantic 10 Conference in postseason play since the season. Atlantic 10 student-athletes excel in the classroom as well. The Atlantic 10 sponsors several academic awards programs, including Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and the Commissioner s Honor Roll, which honored an Atlantic 10 record 1,668 student-athletes with a 3.0 grade point average or better this past year. The league also cites a male and female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and awards for postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes who express a desire to continue their education. The Atlantic 10 Conference will crown champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men s and women s basketball, men s and women s cross country, field hockey, men s golf, women s lacrosse, men s and women s indoor and outdoor track & field, women s rowing, men s and women s soccer, softball, men s and women s swimming & diving, men s and women s tennis, and women s volleyball. 31 All of the University s more than 400 student-athletes are served by support services designed to ensure their welfare in all of their academic and athletic endeavors. This commitment to Spider student-athletes is unwavering and ever-growing. STUDENT ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT AND ACADEMIC SERVICES In order to achieve excellence in all areas, Richmond student-athletes are encouraged to utilize the department s academic support services. The office welcomed two additions in 2001, Assistant Director of Athletics/Academics Rodney Lackey and Academic Coordinator Tom Woodard. Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Student Athlete Development and University Relations, Dr. George Ivey directs the department. Richmond s Student Athlete Development and Academic Support office oversees the academic services for all 19 varsity sports on campus. In addition, the academic coordinators advise student-athletes in the areas of life skills, tutoring, class scheduling and career planning. They also monitor the progress of Richmond studentathletes throughout the school year and aid in the areas of scheduling of tutors and provide monitored study hall sessions. Each studentathlete also has easy access to the University s Wellness/Computer Lab. The office is concerned with providing opportunities and support for University student-athletes to achieve success at the highest level, both academically and athletically. Richmond student-athletes boast a graduation rate of 83 percent, which ranks among the nation s best. Tutors on all subjects are available for all student-athletes. Student-athletes can take part in life and study skill seminars, as well as time management workshops. Each student-athlete is provided a supervised study hall and periodic academic progress reports are afforded to each head coach and student-athlete. Computers are accessible for all studentathletes use. Academic and personal counseling is offered by academic advisors and licensed clinical psychologists. SPORTS MEDICINE The Spider Sports Medicine Department provides for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The expansive Spider Training Room was recently renovated and features the latest electric modalities and cardiovascular equipment. Team Physician, Dr. Christopher Young, and Team Internist, Dr. Leslie Rose, direct studentathletes health care. Richmond s Director of Sports Medicine is assisted by seven NATA-certified athletic trainers. Certified coverage is provided for all sports, and student-athletes have year-round accessibility to athletic trainers and facilities. A staff physical therapist is available for individualized rehabilitation protocols. Education is provided to student-athletes regarding health matters and concerns in order to aid students in achieving optimum health and conditioning. STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING Strength and conditioning efforts are conducted in a 4,000-square-foot facility that has recently been upgraded. Darin Thomas directs a staff that provides strength and conditioning programs for all 19 Spider varsity sports. Each team has a strength and conditioning staff member to direct its training program, with emphasis on strength, conditioning, agility, speed, flexibility and plyometric training. Each team works out year-round, both during its season and in the off-season. Each squad s coaching staff is involved in the development and implementation of these workouts. Every athlete on every squad is provided his or her individual workout. Specific workout times for each team are scheduled. Strength and conditioning staff members are in constant communication with the sports medicine staff in order to ensure the proper rehabilitation of athletes and to prevent possible injuries. 32 UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND FIELD HOCKEY 2002 My Perspective HEATHER MICHELLE RICE Heather Rice is one of Richmond's most prolific players ever. She holds the program mark for points (133) and goals scored (61) in a career. The All-American was chosen the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player in 2001 and was a two-time All-CAA selection. I came to the University of Richmond from Oklahoma City where Field Hockey was virtually unknown. On my visit to UR, I found an atmosphere that would allow me to achieve my full potential of being a student athlete. At the end of my visit, I knew UR was the place for me. As it turned out, I received a first class education, formed friendships that will last a lifetime and was privileged to play four years of field hockey and one year of basketball. For me, UR athletics has a decidedly close family atmosphere. Richmond has a unique structure because all of its athletes are supportive of one another and become your closest friends. It is the athletes, coaches and athletic administration you see sitting on the hill, cheering you on and supporting you throughout the season. It is a great community environment that is bound by the bond of common experiences. Richmond offers a rich tradition of academic excellence through its 0 curriculum. Athletics at the Division 1 level is very demanding and for me, academic success would have been virtually impossible without a supportive and understanding faculty. My professors took a genuine interest in my progress and I found motivation through their concern. I wanted a University that would challenge my thoughts and enrich my knowledge and as a graduated senior of the Robins School of Business, I can assure you that Richmond did all of these things and much more. At UR, I learned the value of hard work and that having talent does not guarantee success. However, success is achieved through a strong work ethic and always giving 100% and this is what I prided myself in. Throughout my career, I focused on one quote from an inspiring coach. North Carolina women s soccer coach Anson Dorrance once said that The vision of a champion is someone who is bent over, drenched in sweat, at the point of exhaustion when no one else is watching in reference to soccer star Mia Hamm. I have always believed that hard work and desire will get you further than any talent you might have, and that a championship is always won in the off-season. For me, off-season workouts are a time to work outside your comfort zone in order to push ones self to that next level. You have to trust in the process, knowing your goals will be accomplished when you see the final result in the fall. I have found that if you have dedication and love for something, the sky is the limit to what you can achieve. Looking back on my four-year athletic career at Richmond, I could not have asked for a more rewarding experience. I learned many life lessons that include dedication to one s goals, loyalty to one s team and desire for one s success. University of Richmond allowed me to become a wellrounded person, not just an athlete. I take great pride in calling myself a Spider and have numerous memories of my experience that will last a lifetime. Thank you, UR, for giving me the opportunity to grow and the honor of representing you. Forever a Spider, Heather Michelle Rice #9 32
