NOTE FROM THE HEAD COACH As I enter my fourth year as Head Coach at the University of Richmond, I would like to share with you our journey during my three and a half year tenure. In 2001, we learned the work ethic, dedication, perseverance and fitness level required to become a champion. In our first year of Atlantic 10 competition, we qualified for the league playoffs and lost to the eventual champion in semi-final action. From that loss, the 2002 Spiders recognized that with increased confidence and an additional year of experience we could compete for a conference title. The 2002 Spiders rewrote nearly every school record, went undefeated in league play (8-0) and won the conference championship to earn one of sixteen invites to the NCAA tournament, the first in the program s 82-year history. The 2003 Spiders repeated the feats set by the 2002 team, rewrote many of the records written in 2002 and earned the program s best-ever national ranking (10th) and first-ever at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. As the start of the 2004 season approaches, I look forward to seeing the continued growth of Richmond Hockey. It is our goal to surpass the standards set by the 2001, 2002 and 2003 Spider Hockey teams. In an effort to raise the bar for future University of Richmond hockey teams, the 2004 Spiders are committed to the hard work and sacrifice that is necessary to compete for a third conference championship and advance beyond the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The 2004 Spiders are experienced, have tasted success and are hungry for more. I hope you will consider joining us as we prepare to take the next step together as one! TABLE OF CONTENTS 1

8 2004 OUTLOOK 2004 OUTLOOK After ruling the Atlantic 10 conference the past two seasons, the University of Richmond women s field hockey team hopes to attack its two consecutive titles and make an impact in the NCAA Tournament. This program has improved tremendously in the past two seasons, but we must continue to rewrite our history and outdo the Richmond teams which came before us. We want to take the next step and advance beyond the first round of the NCAA Tournament, remarked head coach Ange Bradley. We want to leave new footprints to be filled and surpassed by future Spider teams. Last season, the Spiders finished with an 18-5 record and compiled a 6-0 mark in conference play for the second consecutive year. After claiming the conference championship, Richmond fell to Berkeley in the NCAA play-in-game but still advanced to the tournament, earning its first-ever at-large bid. For the second straight year, the Spiders fell to state-rival Old Dominion in opening round action. The Spiders earned their first national ranking since 1992 when they appeared in the NFHCA Top 20 poll on September 7 and Richmond ended the season with its highestever national ranking, tying for tenth. The 2004 schedule will challenge the Spiders as they face four schools that finished in the final NFHCA final Top 20 poll and three teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Richmond has also added a number of state rivals with VCU, William & Mary, Virginia, Old Dominion and James Madison all on the schedule. During my tenure we have gradually increased our strength of schedule as our program grew. Our schedule is now in a place that we have demanding opponents that will help prepare us prepare for the conference and NCAA championships, Bradley commented. After playing last year with just four upperclassmen, the Spiders roster is now more experienced with Bradley s first recruiting class in their third year. In the last two years, our underclassmen have been asked to assume a high degree of responsibility both on and off the field. Their maturation, experience and confidence will be invaluable to our success this season. Captains Laura Hur, Allie Howard and Lesley Russell are expected to lead the Spiders to another successful season. FORWARDS Junior Whitney Wells returns as the Spiders leading forward after scoring ten goals last season. She finished tied for third in the conference with 23 points and her ten goals tied for ninth in Allie Howard Laura Hur the program records for single season goals. Whitney improved tremendously throughout the spring season. In addition, she made the USFHA summer league team and trained against high-level talent, increasing both her experience and confidence. After earning a starting position mid-way through her rookie season, sophomore Heather Wrublesky returns in the Spiders attack. Wrublesky tallied two goals last year with appearances in all 23 contests. Heather is a great athlete, possessing speed, hustle and desire. She worked hard to improve her stick skills in the off-season and I expect her to become a leader on the forward line Sophomore Amanda Florio also returns for Richmond s offense after playing all 23 games last year and tallying three goals. With a year s experience and improved confidence, I expect Amanda to be a great attribute to our frontline 8

9 both in her play making ability and finishing skills. She has worked hard this summer to become a member of the USFHA summer league travel team. Junior Jess Stern will make the move to forward after seeing limited minutes in the backfield the past two seasons. Michelle La Force We experimented in spring contests and expect Jess to add depth to our front line. She has great acceleration and stick skills and is very good at drawing corners. Senior Danica Haupt had a strong spring season and will contribute in our offensive attack this year. In addition, freshmen Ashley Loh and Bethany Martin will compete for minutes on the forward line. MIDFIELD The Spiders midfield will be strong with the return of senior Laura Hur and junior Allie Howard. Hur finished eighth in the nation in assists (14) and was named to both the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team and the STX/NFHCA All-Region second team. Hur currently ranks tenth for the program s all-time assists. Laura is an outstanding defender but her true strength is in setting up our attack. She is often overlooked by opponents because of the simplicity of her play. Howard, last year s Offensive Player of the Year for the conference, led the team in scoring with 15 goals while pacing the conference and finishing 17 th in the nation in scoring with 43 points. She was named to the STX/NFHCA All-Region first team and was selected as an alternate for the U.S. U21 team this summer. Allie had a standout sophomore year and her greatest challenge will be learning how to direct her teammates and set the tempo of play for our team. Junior Colleen Wevodau is back in the Spiders midfield after starting 19 contests last year. Wevodau tallied six goals and two assists and finished 11 th in conference with 14 points. Colleen is quick and possesses a great first touch. She has an outstanding shot on goal and I expect her scoring to increase this year. Newcomers Tara Kelly, Shannon Taylor and Holly Cram will also see playing time in the midfield. Cram, an exchange student from Edinburgh University, is a member of Scotland s U21 national team. BACKS Juniors Michelle La Force and Lesley Russell will anchor the Spiders defense after both played in all 23 games last year. La Force contributed one goal and added four assists last year and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team. Russell, a member of the Atlantic 10 All-Championship team, added one assist while starting all 23 contests. Both Michelle and Lesley possess tremendous speed and have the ability to overlap into the attack very well. Through this, they help create many of our scoring opportunities. Colleen Wevodau With the loss of All-Conference and All- Region honoree Lydia Decembrino, the Spiders have a big hole to fill and juniors Ashley Barnes and Emma Bradley will be looked upon to fill the void. Bradley finished fifth on the squad in scoring with 15 points off six goals and three assists. Barnes saw action in 17 contests and contributed two scores. Ashley and Emma both had strong spring seasons and are ready to step into the starting role and take on more responsibility. Sophomore Rhiannon Nolt and freshmen Erin Arthur and Annemarie van Wel will all compete for playing time in the Spiders defense. GOALKEEPERS Richmond returns the services of junior Michelle Swartz in the goal. Swartz finished ninth in the country last year with a GAA of 1.21 and recorded eight shutouts. In addition, sophomore Sarah Abboud will challenge Swartz for the starting job after seeing limited playing time last year. I have complete confidence in both of our goalkeepers. I know that both have the ability to do a great job in leading our defense OUTLOOK 9

19 PLAYER PROFILES As seniors, we cannot wait to begin and compete in our last season. We want to build off the hard work, achievements and championships that the 2002 and 2003 Spiders have left us. These teams have left a legacy of record-breaking achievements that can only be surpassed through the hard work and commitment of the 22 current Spider field hockey players. Our team has finally matured, providing us with eleven upperclassmen, many of whom have a considerable amount of experience on the field. More importantly, we have all put the same sacrifice of countless hours of hard work on and off the field and are prepared to bring the 2004 Spiders to the next level. We have worked harder than we ever thought we could while keeping the vision of what we know we will achieve in the back of our minds. We are excited by the idea of leading the 2004 Spiders field hockey team this season in defending our Atlantic 10 Championship title. We have ambitiously set our sights at being a Final Four Team in the NCAA tournament. We have worked hard for this goal, are capable of achieving it and we owe it to ourselves, our coaches and the teams that have paved the way before us. As seniors, we want to leave this program with an even greater winning legacy than what was handed down to us and make history in the NCAA tournament. -Laura Hur and Danica Haupt, Class of

29 ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE/ CRENSHAW FIELD Atlantic 10 Conference Atlantic 10 Conference 230 South Broad Street, Suite 1700 Philadelphia, PA (215) Fax: (215) Web Site: When it became apparent that the landscape of intercollegiate athletics was to undergo vast changes, the institutions of the Atlantic 10 Conference did something unique - they banded together. And, when the dust settled, the A-10 emerged stronger than ever! It is that commitment that has given rise to the greatest era of success ever enjoyed in the history of the Atlantic 10. More teams and studentathletes are excelling than ever before, not only on the fields of play, but also in the classrooms as each year the A-10 recognizes more and more student-athletes for their academic successes. The University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph s University, Temple CRENSHAW FIELD The University of Richmond field hockey teams plays its home contests at Crenshaw Field, located on the Westhampton side of campus. In the summer of 2001, the facility underwent a major facelift as the artificial turf was replaced. On May 1, 2004, a special ceremony and plaque dedication for Fanny Crenshaw, a coach and member of the University of Richmond s faculty for 41 years, was held at the field. The Westhampton College Class of 1954 donated a plaque honoring Crenshaw s dedication to both the University and the sport of field hockey. In inclement weather, the field serves as an alternate practice site for many Spider sports. The facility also serves as a training site for the USFHA Futures program. Amphitheater style seating is available. University, and Xavier University each offer a rich blend of proud academic and athletic traditions to form an impressive athletic alliance. That alliance will be further enhanced with the additions of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Saint Louis University beginning with the season. If a conference bases its success on the achievements of its student-athletes and teams, then the season was extremely successful. That success was highlighted by seven men s and five women s basketball teams earning postseason bids. On the men s side, Xavier earned the Atlantic 10 s automatic bid to the NCAA Men s Basketball Tournament by becoming the first team in league history to win four games at the A-10 Championship. Saint Joseph s, Dayton, and Richmond each garnered at-large berths with the Musketeers and Hawks coming within a game of the Final Four - the first time that two Atlantic 10 teams reached the Elite 8 in the same season. With four teams earning NCAA bids, the A-10 has now sent multiple teams to the NCAA Tournament 13 of the last 14 seasons. George Washington, Rhode Island, and Temple also received NIT bids. George Washington and Temple earned berths in the NCAA Women s Basketball Tournament - the 10th time in 11 years that the Conference sent multiple teams. Richmond, Saint Joseph s, and Xavier participated in the WNIT, with the Spiders reaching the semifinals. In men s golf, Rhode Island became the first team in A-10 history to qualify for the National Golf Championship; Richmond earned NCAA bids in field hockey and men s and women s tennis; Dayton represented the A-10 in the NCAA volleyball and women s soccer tournaments; Temple earned berths in the women s lacrosse and softball tournaments; St. Bonaventure advanced to the NCAA Baseball Tournament; Rhode Island garnered the A-10 s men s soccer automatic bid; and Massachusetts went to the NCAA Softball Tournament for the 10th straight year by earning an at-large berth. In all, 356 teams have represented the Atlantic 10 Conference in postseason play since the season. Atlantic 10 student-athletes excel in the classroom as well. The Atlantic 10 sponsors several academic awards programs, including Academic All- Conference teams in each of its sports and the Commissioner s Honor Roll, which honored an Atlantic 10 record 1,830 student-athletes with a 3.0 grade point average or better this past year. The league also cites a male and female Scholar- Athlete of the Year, and awards four postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes who express a desire to continue their education. The Atlantic 10 Conference, which spans six states and the District of Columbia with a total population of almost 58 million people, will crown champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men s and women s basketball, men s and women s cross country, field hockey, men s golf, women s lacrosse, men s and women s indoor and outdoor track & field, women s rowing, men s and women s soccer, softball, men s and women s swimming & diving, men s and women s tennis, and women s volleyball. The Westhampton College Class of 1954 honored former Spider coach Fanny Crenshaw with a plaque dedication May 1, 2004 for Crenshaw s contributions to the University as well as the sport of field hockey. 32 MY PERSPECTIVE HEATHER RICE I came to the University of Richmond from Oklahoma City, a place where field hockey was virtually unknown. On my visit to UR, I found an atmosphere that would allow me to achieve my full potential of becoming a student-athlete. At the end of my visit, I knew UR was the place for me. As it turned out, I received a first class education, met lifelong friends and was privileged to play four years of field hockey and one year of basketball. To me, the UR athletic department is a decidedly close family atmosphere. Richmond has a unique structure because all of the athletes are supportive of one another and close friends. It is the other athletes, coaches and athletic administration that are sitting on the hill, cheering and supporting you throughout the season. It is a great community environment, one that is bound by the bond of common experiences. Academically, Richmond offers a rich tradition of excellence through a rigorous curriculum. Athletics at the Division I level is so demanding that without a supportive and understanding faculty, academic success would have been virtually impossible Heather Rice 02 holds the program marks for both career points (133) and career goals (61). The All-American was selected as the 2001 Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and was a two-time All-CAA honoree. for me. My professors took a genuine interest in my progress and I found motivation through their expectations. I wanted a University that would challenge my thoughts and enrich my knowledge and as a graduated senior from the Robins School of Business and its excellent accounting program, I can assure you that Richmond provided these things and more. At UR, I learned the true value of hard work and that merely having talent does not guarantee success. I prided myself on the idea that success is achieved through a strong work ethic. Throughout my career, I focused on a quote from an inspiring coach. North Carolina women s soccer coach Anson Dorrance once said, The vision of a champion is someone who is bent over, drenched in sweat, at the point of exhaustion when no one else is watching, in reference to soccer star Mia Hamm. I have always believed that hard work and desire will get you farther than talent and that a championship is always won in the off-season. The off-season is a chance to work outside your comfort zone and push yourself to that next level. You have to trust in the process, knowing your goals will be accomplished when you see the final result in the fall. I have found that if you have dedication and love for something, the sky is the limit to what you can achieve. Looking back on my four-year athletic career at Richmond, I could not have asked for a more rewarding experience. I have learned many great life lessons that include dedication to one s goals, loyalty to one s team and desire for one s success. The University of Richmond allowed me to become a well-rounded person, not just an athlete. I take great pride in calling myself a Spider and have numerous memories of my experience that will last a lifetime. Thank you, UR, for the opportunity to grow and the high privilege of representing you. Forever a Spider, Heather Michelle Rice MY PERSPECTIVE 32
