2 2006 Richmond Spider Field Hockey 2 As I begin my sixth year at the University of Richmond, I would like to share with you my journey as Head Coach of the Spiders. In my first year, the 2001 Spiders learned the work ethic, dedication, perseverance and fitness level required to become a champion. Unfortunately, we fell short in our quest for a league crown, losing in the semifinal round to the eventual champion. A Note From Ange Bradley... From that loss, Richmond hockey was born. The 2002, 2003, 2004 & 2005 Spiders have recorded a 33-0 record in league play and have won four consecutive regular and postseason championships, thus securing berths to the NCAA tournament. The 2002 Spiders were the first team in the 82-year history of Richmond Hockey to win a conference championship and go to the NCAA tournament, setting a precedent for future teams to follow. The 2003, 2004 and 2005 teams followed suit and rewrote virtually every school record. These teams also managed to break into the national scene earning NCAA rankings as high as 10th in the country. Over the last four years we have struggled, suffered and sacrificed to learn to walk with confidence, pride and determination. Together, my first recruiting class of eight (the class of 2005) have built this program from the ground up and we have become a nationally recognized program. Despite all the hard work we have had many laughs, great bus rides and friendships to last a lifetime. As we approach the start of the 2006 season, my first recruiting class has graduated and left us with a tradition of excellence to aspire to and reach beyond. It is the quest of the 2006 Spider Hockey team to inherit our past and better the future. We are committed to compete for the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship and become the first team in Richmond s hockey history to advance beyond the first round of the NCAA tournament. We are committed to continuous improvement and I hope you will join us on this journey to become a National Champion. 3 2006 Senior Note It seems like just yesterday that I became a Richmond Spider. Walking on the field as a freshman, I was immediately aware of the intensity and drive of my opponent. Everything seemed quicker; the ball speed, the movement, the turf Little did I know that the intensity and drive of my teammates would reach far beyond that of my opponent. I became part of an elite group of athletes with an inspiring determination and profound work ethic. They taught me the three principles of Richmond Field Hockey: hard work, dedication and heart, empowering me to be a contributing factor to a nationally ranked program. As a sophomore, I gained the confidence to implement the skills I had acquired in my first year. I worked on improving my mental as well as my physical game. I learned to dig deep within to push to the next level. This inspiration moved me to work harder for my team and give back what was given to me. I was faced with the opportunity to be a leader, for I now walked in the shoes of experience. I learned that a team of the greatest athletes playing as individuals does not guarantee success but a team of great individuals playing together does. Junior year, Jodi Murphy transferred to Richmond and became my teammate and friend. She brought talent, leadership, and intensity to help guide the team to another A-10 championship and NCAA appearance. Combined together, Jodi and I create a unique balance as the class of After losing eight graduating seniors this spring, we were forced to work harder than ever before. Within our small group of returnees, we broke our own records. We pushed ourselves beyond our limits. Most importantly, we became one. This unity empowered us to aim high and stay focused on the goals set before us. We made several advancements as individuals, but most importantly, as a team. We learned to compete against our teammates as if they were opponents. There were no longer any ties at the finish line. My senior year is going to present new challenges from my previous years as a Spider. The eight girls that had been my mentors since freshman year will no longer be there and have left us with large shoes to fill. However, the passion, desire, and hard work that they helped instill will always be a part of me. The solid foundation that Richmond Field Hockey has been built on continues to grow stronger with each passing year. The teams before us have left a legacy with numerous record-breaking accomplishments that can only be surpassed with an unwavering commitment to excellence. Each time I look at the three rings on my fingers, I am reminded of the histories that I have been a part of and will help lead the 2006 team with confidence to another ring. We are all excited for our 12 newcomers to join us in our quest for a fifth consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship and beyond. Within each Spider resides a unique blend of talent. Together, we will embrace our strengths and overcome our weaknesses. This unit of multifaceted individuals will only work to strengthen Richmond Hockey and help us reach our goal of becoming National Champions. We are steadfast in our mission to exceed beyond what already has been accomplished. I look forward to competing in my final season as a Spider. I believe in Richmond Field Hockey and believing is the first step to victory. -Heather Wrublesky, Class of Richmond Spider Field Hockey Senior Heather Wrublesky is one of two seniors on the 2006 Spider Field Hockey squad, along with Jodi Murphy. Over the past summer, while studying abroad in Prague, Czech Republic, Wrublesky played hockey with the Praha Bohemians. Her team, which played in the top club division in Prague, included several players who were part of the Czech Republic National Team. 3

11 2006 Preview Head coach Ange Bradley saw eight of the most dominating student-athletes in Richmond Athletics history leave her squad after last season because of graduation. The thought of rebuilding, though, has never crossed her mind, rather she and the 2006 Spiders are determined to prove they are one of the nation s elite teams year-in and year-out. What are the teams goals for the 2006 season? Our goals for the 2006 season is to better that which has been done before us. We will look to rewrite our history as much as we can so that the 2006 Spider Hockey program will leave its mark on Richmond Hockey. To be specific we want to win the 2006 A-10 title and advance beyond the first round of the NCAA Tournament. What are some of the strengths of this team? This team has a tremendous amount of speed, they are eager to learn new things, take risks and they have fun. I think another strength is we have 12 freshmen and that is exciting to watch so many people work to win a championship for the first time. We have some many newcomers the process will be fresh and exciting. Who are the leaders for this season and what qualitites do they possess? With the loss of so many seniors the 2006 spring season was used to develop our leaders who were present but in the shadows of such a senior laden team. Spring training was challenging, difficult and demanding both mentally and physically. That said, through the process we had tremendous growth as people, athletes, hockey players and as a team. To answer the question, each of the seven returnees -- seniors to sophomores -- have special traits which will enable them to help lead a freshmen laden team both on and off the field. Our two seniors, and most experienced players, Heather Wrublesky and Jodi Murphy have displayed the most consistency in leadership throughout the spring and summer months. Jodi s strengths as a leader are many. She is fun, engaging, demanding, has tremendous perspective, but I believe her greatest quality is she knows herself very well. She believes in herself and therefore she is in a position to look outward to help others not at the expense of herself or the teams core values. Heather s leadership style is by example. She has an outstanding work ethic both on and off the field and communicates very well with me and the team. She has a tremendous amount of pride in Richmond Hockey and is determined to lead this team to the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship. Senior Heather Wrublesky Talk about the newcomers and what those players can bring to the team. The incoming class will bring strength in numbers. They are very excited about starting over. They are eager to learn and want to be a part of our history. Each player has amazing things to offer our family. Adrian Pickar has speed and intelligence. Becky White s skill and intensity are superb. Lindsey Conrad has great vision for scoring and passing. Sydney Leone is fun, competitive and tough. Kate Windett shows determination, vision and can distribute very well. Jess Weidner possesses a high work rate, is a great tackler and has great vision. Lena Voelmle is a tough, athletic and gutsy palyer. Jacki Raithel is a focused and intelligent goalkeeper and possesses aggressiveness. Megan Thompson is strong and a tremendous athlete with good scoring abilities. Dani Pycroft has experience and is superb in possession and distribution skills. Sarah Blythe-Wood is a scoring and penalty-corner specialist with great confidence. Anne Edwards has a passion for the game and shows great speed and fight. I am excited to have their enthusiasm and youth and this group of 12 has also made me evaluate my coaching. They have already made me a better coach. Does the loss of the eight seniors concern you? When you experience loss in any venue -- sports, life, etc. -- especially in mass quantities, the initial reaction is sadness, fear, panic, concern and tragedy. I must admit after our last game in November of 2005 Senior Jodi Murphy those were my thoughts. How will we move forward -- we are so young. As our spring season progressed and I watched our younger players evolve to assume more personal responsibility on the field, increased pride, leadership and ownership in this program my doubts and fears turned to excitement and thoughts of endless possibilities with this new team. I have a tremendous amount of confidence and respect for this group of returning players. I feel the closest to this group of players in all aspects of coaching than I have ever felt with any team that I coached while at Richmond. I trust, together with patience and continuous improvement we will guide the freshmen class to their first Atlantic 10 Championship. We will focus on our journey together rather than our destination, one step and day at a time. This will alleviate pressure on our class of 12 and allow them to evolve over the season instead of during the preseason. How does the last four seasons success make you feel? I am proud of our accomplishments, we have built a strong foundation through hard work, dedication, perserverance and a commitment to the process. For that I am really inspired by what we have done in four short years. Those close to me often tell me I need to take more time to reflect upon the success of Richmond hockey, however, as a competitive person my nature is to evaluate, assess and move forward quickly. I know we can always improve and therefore as a leader of this program I believe I must always keep a vision for future Richmond teams. So with that it mind, yes, what we have done here has been wonderful but there is still more to be done. What will make this season more challenging than the past? The biggest challenge is we have so many people doing something new for the first time. The anxiety and uncertainty of a new situation can negatively effect a persons confidence. In an effort to gain insight to this feeling I have worked hard this summer to put myself in situations which take me out of my comfort zone. This summer has given me the opportunity to grow and do many things for the first time. As a result of this challenge I have the opportunity to practice greater patience and learn to Hurry up and Slow Down. I will need to gradually introduce concepts to this team and check in on the players confidence and adjustment to a new environment. I must reiterate more than ever it is ok to take risks and in the effort to take risks you will have a team behind you to support your decision in the risk. What are you looking for this team to do over the course of 2006? I am looking for us to take risks, take care of each other and have fun as we evolve and grow into a competitive unit, prepared to compete for and win the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship on Crenshaw Field. I would then look for us to move into the NCAA Tournament with a tremendous amount of confidence in ourselves and our play Richmond Spider Field Hockey

12 2006 Richmond Spider Field Hockey Sixth Year Delaware 88 - Four-Straight Atlantic 10 Titles - Four-Straight NCAA Appearances - Two-Time A-10 Coach of the Year Entering her sixth season at Richmond, head coach Ange Bradley will be looking to continue the winning tradition she has instilled in the Spider field hockey during her first five years on the sidelines. Over the past four seasons, Richmond has swept the Atlantic 10 regular seasons, going 33-0 since the 2002 season. Bradley s squad have secured four-consecutive A- 10 tourney titles and have advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournametn four-straight seasons. The 2006 squad presents Bradley with a new challenge after losing a senior class of eight, which was also her first recruiting class at Richmond. The 2005 senior class, along with Bradley can be considered one of the most dominating in Richmond Athletics history. Their team accolades don t even come close to overshadowing their individual performances. Bradley helped mold Allie Howard into the first Atlantic 10 student-athlete, male or female, to win three-straight Atlantic 10 Player of the Year honors. The Spiders notched one A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year, three A-10 Defensive Players of the Year and five A-10 Offensive Players of the Year in the past five seasons under Bradley. The individual accolades did not stop with her players as Bradley also has won two A-10 Coach of the Year honors over the past five seasons. In 2003, Bradley led the squad to a program-record 18 wins enroute to the A-10 Conference title and the program s first-ever at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Richmond finished the year ranked 10th in the NFHCA Final Poll, marking the Spiders highest-ever ranking. In 2004, Richmond was even better than the previous season, equalling the record for most wins in a season at 18, but dropping only three games and setting the mark for highest winning percentage in school history at.857 (18-3). The Spiders, who again ended the season ranked 10th in the country, swept through their A-10 schedule for the third-straight season and earned their thirdconsecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament.
