William I Jacobs Recreational Complex In the fall of 2005 American University athletics will have a new home for its nationally ranked field hockey team, when the William I Jacobs Recreational Complex is opened. The Eagles have spent close to the last decade practicing and playing their home games on the turf fields of local colleges and universities. The field, which was made possible through a generous gift by American University alum William I Jacobs, will finally give the AU Field Hockey team a place to call home, eliminating early morning practices and having to travel for home games. With the anticipated completed construction of the new field finishing mid-summer, American will have the opportunity to host the Patriot League Tournament and put in bids to host rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The state-of-the-art facility features an astro turf playing surface, a brand new softball diamond and two outdoor sand volleyball courts. 4 Steve Jennings Beginning his seventh year as head fi eld hockey coach at American University, Steve Jennings has established himself as one of the nation s premier coaches, earning both the respect of his players and peers. In 2004 Jennings was named as NFHCA Division I National Coach of the Year after guiding the program to the team s most successful season ever. The Eagles fi nished the year with a 19-3 overall record while fi n- ishing seventh in the NFHCA poll, the teams highest ranking ever. The Eagles in 2004 garnered their fi rst NCAA Tournament victory, a 2-1 win over Iowa in the opening round. The Eagles were perfect in the Patriot League for the second consecutive season, outscoring conference opponents by a 25-5 margin in the regular season. Junior Javiera Villagra was named as a First Team All-American selection, with Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year Camila Infante capturing Second Team All-American honors. Freshman Maggie Hall was named as the Patriot League Rookie of the Year. In 2003, the Eagles fi nished the season ranked ninth in the country on the NCAA Field Hockey Ratings Percentage Index. Named DITA/NFHCA Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year and the Patriot League Coach of the Year in 2003, Jennings led his team to its fi rst-ever Patriot League Championship and the team s first-ever berth in the NCAA tournament. Academically, the AU fi eld hockey team placed third on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association s Academic Team list with a 3.37 grade point average. Bringing in eight new players in 2003, including two international standouts, Jennings led his team to a 17-4 overall record and a 5-0 Patriot League record. Playing some top teams in the nation (Maryland, Richmond and Duke), the Eagles were recognized on the STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll Top-20 for the fi nal fi ve weeks of the season. In 2003, Villagra became the program s third All- American, as well as a member of the STX/NFHCA Division I All-Region First Team. Joining Villagra on the All-Region First Team was another newcomer, freshman Camila Infante, who was also honored by the Patriot League as the Rookie of the Year for her eight Head Coach goals and 11 assists. Since joining the Patriot League in 2001, the Eagles have steadily improved in conference play, moving from a 4-3 record in both 2001 and 2002 to back-toback perfect conference records in the past two seasons. During the fi nal two years in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), Jennings guided American to a 10-7 overall record in 2000 and an 8-8 fi nish in his fi rst season. Outside of American, Jennings was a member of the U.S. Women s National Team coaching staff in both 2001 and 2002, and helped the United States earn the bid for the World Cup. In November 2002, he traveled to Perth, Australia, where the United States fi nished ninth out of 16 teams at the World Cup. Jennings has also coached the national team at the Champions Challenge in South Africa and at the World Cup Qualifi er in England. His other destinations with the national team have been Holland, Germany, New Zealand and India. No stranger to competition himself, Jennings is considered one of the fi nest U.S. field hockey players. He was a member of the U.S. Men s National Team from 1991 to 1999 and participated in 91 international test matches. He represented the United States in the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, where he was vice captain of the team. Jennings took a bronze medal in the 1995 Pan American Games and helped the United States to fi fth place in the 1999 Pan American Games. He also participated in eight United States Olympic Festivals and won three gold and two 2003 & 2004 NCAA Tournament Appearances 3

silver medals. In addition, he was the fi rst U.S. athlete to compete in the highest Dutch club division. Jennings was a member of the Athlete Representation to the U.S. Field Hockey Association Board from 1993 to 2000 and chaired a clinic on video analysis at the 1999 and 2000 NCAA Field Hockey Final Fours. A native of Bethesda, Md., Jennings spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. There he helped guide the Buckeyes to three top-three fi nishes in the Big Ten Conference and several national rankings. In 1996, Jennings helped lead the Buckeyes to a No. 13 national ranking and a second-place fi nish in the Big Ten. In his three years at Ohio State, he oversaw many different facets of the program, ranging from individual tactical and technical skill sessions to match preparation and recruiting. Prior to his tenure at Ohio State, Jennings served as an assistant at American and helped guide the Eagles to their fi rst-ever national ranking (15th) and fi rst-ever victory over then-no. 1 Old Dominion. He also coached the North squad at the 1999 North-South All-Star Game and was an assistant coach with the 1999 Tidewater Tempest, a U.S. Field Hockey summer league team. He also served as the assistant coach of the U-16 national team in Holland. A 1997 graduate of the University of Maryland with a bachelor s degree in psychology, Jennings began his career playing with the Greenwich Field Hockey Club in New York. In 1987 he was selected for the U.S. Junior National Team and participated in the 1989 Junior World Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia. He is a 1987 graduate of Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Md., and currently resides in Washington, D.C. The Jennings File... In her five years at AU, Thorn has helped the Eagles to consecutive Patriot League Championships and NCAA berths in 2003 and 2004, in addition to a fi nal RPI ranking of seven. A 2001 graduate of the University of Iowa with degrees in communication studies and marketing, Thorn was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and an All-America pick as a four-year starter for the Hawkeyes from As a senior captain and the team co-mvp, Thorn was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team while helping Iowa to the 1999 NCAA Final Four. 6 Maureen Breslin Maureen Breslin returns to the Eagle coaching staff for a third consecutive season. Working primarily with the goalkeepers, Breslin brought a wealth of knowledge to the fi eld, helping lead American to their fi rst Patriot League Championship and NCAA berth. Under her guidance, former goalie Laura Miller posted 10 shutouts in 2003 in one of the most successful goalkeeping seasons in school history. No stranger to Patriot League competition, Breslin graduated from Bucknell University in 1999 with a bachelor of science in education. During her tenure at Bucknell, she was a four-year starter in goal for the Bison and was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year in Also a selection on the 1998 Second Team All-Patriot League squad, Breslin was honored with the Tracy Bass Award for Intensity the same year. The award is given annually by the fi eld hockey team and recognizes the true sprit of the individual who competes to her fullest potential in every opportunity possible. Also a standout in the classroom, Breslin was a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and was the recipient of the Robert A. Latour Award for her involvement with service projects. Following her collegiate career, Breslin participated in the Peace Corps in Sichaun, China, where she taught English before beginning her coaching career working with the varsity program at Penncrest High School in Media, Pa. In addition, Breslin taught Social Studies and worked with the freshman lacrosse team at the high school. Recently, Breslin fi nshed her masters in International Training and Education at American University and resides in the Washington, D.C., area. Coaching Staff Keli Smith Keli Smith begins her fi rst season as a volunteer assistant coach at American. Smith, a Selinsgrove, Pa., native, has spent the last four years as a member of the U.S. National Team, where she has made over 60 international career apearances. As a member of the National Team, she scored 14 goals while competing in numerous prestigious tournaments including the Champions Challenge, International Atlantic Cup and the World Cup. Smith currently resides in Bethesda, Md & 2004 NCAA Tournament Appearances 5

2005 Season Outlook The 2005 American University fi eld hockey team will have big shoes to fi ll after the previous year s squad ended up completing the best year in the 30-plus years that AU has been sponsoring the sport. Fortunately for seventh-year Head Coach Steve Jennings, the Eagles lost just two players to graduation and the construction of a new fi eld at AU will help keep American among the nation s elite. Rejoining Jennings on the sidelines will be fi fth year assistant coach Sarah Thorn and third year assistant Maureen Breslin. The Eagles welcome a new addition to the coaching staff in 2005, when former Maryland standout and U.S. National Team member Keli Smith begins her fi rst year as a volunteer assistant coach. AU will have no problem in the playing experience department as the team returns seven seniors, six juniors and fi ve sophomores. Seven recruits will make their debut for the Eagles as AU strives to capture their third straight Patriot League Championship. We are tremendously excited about this season and the potential of our team, said Jennings. From our brand new turf facility to our incoming class to our returning players, we feel we have the pieces in place to make the next jump among the nation s elite. The team s confi dence level combined with a fi erce desire to continue the momentum we have generated will be an important spark for us this season. The players know how hard they must work to accomplish our goals and we are all excited about the challenge. The Seniors Out of the seven returning seniors, the Eagles boast three all-region selections and one First Team All-American. Lindsay Carroll returns for her fi nal season 6 after contributing at the forward position off the bench in 2004, seeing action in eight matches. Defender Kristen Collins will look to make an impact on the fi eld after missing all but one game last season due to a serious injury. Anchoring the Eagle defense will be First Team All-Region selection Maureen Daniel. Daniel, a First Team All-Patriot League member, led the Eagles in defensive saves last season and was part of a defense that allowed just 23 goals all season while posting four shutouts. Maureen is the heart and soul of our defense. She is instrumental to our team s success with her tackling, channelling, intercepting and distribution. Shannon Goans will compete for a starting midfi eld position after jumping out to a red-hot start last season, when she scored 11 points in the fi rst eight games. Heather Maranzano will once again control the middle of the fi eld where she dished out a team-high nine assists last season. A pivotal cog in the AU penalty corner unit, Maranzano earned Second Team All-Region honors as a junior. Heather s ability to see the space and to understand where the next pass should go allows us to effectively retain possession and move the ball in transition. At the midfi eld position for the Eagles, all eyes will be on First Team All-American Javiera Villagra. Villagra is a dominant force in the center of the fi eld, possessing the vision and ability to set up scoring opportunities for her teammates as well as being an offensive threat herself. Javiera controls the midfi eld and is our most dangerous and creative passer. Her ability to pass the ball on all sides of her body and in a variety of ways allows her to take over a game & 2004 Patriot League Champions Rounding out the senior squad will be defender Caroline Vo. The Watertown, Mass., native is extremely quick and converts turnovers into quality offensive chances often before opposing defenders have time to react. Caroline has worked extremely hard to elevate her game to the next level. Her speed allows her to stay in great tackling position with any attacker and also makes her a constant threat on the overlap. The Juniors Tiffany Carter had a successful season coming off the bench for AU as a sophomore. The midfi elder played in 14 contests last season, tallying two assists but more importantly the team did not miss a beat when Carter replaced a starter during a game. Kaitlin DeTroia will look to contribute more on the offensive end in 2005 as she competes for what will be a starting position at American s most talented position, forward. Returning in the cage for AU after starting all 22 games last season will be Wexford, Pa., native, Allison Fayfich. Fayfi ch tallied six shutouts and the nation s fi fth best save percentage (.819) in her fi rst season as the starting netminder for the Eagles. Allison s has a strong presence in the goal and is unfazed by the opponent or the situation. Her sense of calm allows our defense to focus on their job and keeps her in the game at all times. One of the most frustrating offensive weapons on the team for opposing defenders is 5-6 forward Heidi Hershberger. Hershberger fi nished third on the team in scoring last season with 26 points (11g-4a). The Davis, Calif., native scored two goals in AU s upset over Maryland and tallied six points against PL foe Lafayette during the season.

2005 Season Outlook Forward Camila Infante, the 2004 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, will look to continue her assault on the AU record books after scoring a league-high 37 points (14g-9a) en route to a Second Team All-America nomination. AU fans and opponents take immediate notice anytime the Chilean National Team member controls the ball as it has taken her just two seasons to be known as on of the most dangerous offensive threats in the nation. Camila is an incredibly dangerous attacking midfi elder. Her elimination skills, reach and speed make her a top threat going forward. Erin Rock is the lone junior defender returning to the Eagles. Starting every game in the backfi eld for the Eagles last season, Rock uses her instincts to anticipate opposing offenses AU Field Hockey Roster The Sophomores A pair of forwards, Ashley Foley and Keri Garman, will be looking to build on their playing experiences from last season and compete for playing time up front. Forward Maggie Hall had a breakout season in her fi rst year as an Eagle, earning the Patriot League Rookie of the Year award. Hall led the Eagles in goals last season with 15 goals and excelled in conference play, racking up three goals in AU s wins over Bucknell and Lafayette. Maggie is a unique combination of a natural goal scorer and an excellent passer. She is able to generate opportunities for herself and others regardless of the opponent. Denise Infante is a versatile player who proved that she could excel at any position on the fi eld. No. Name Pos. Cl. Ht. Denise has the fl exibility to play a variety of positions. She generates great power on her shots and passes and is capable of eliminating a defender with her skill. Rounding out the second-year players will be backup goaltender Makinsie Sheridan. Sheridan showed strong improvement in the spring and will vie for the starting position. The Freshmen Seven freshmen join the AU fi eld hockey team in the fall of 2005, including three forwards, one midfi elder and three defenders. Lauren Bacon, a defender from Hershey, Pa., shows a lot of poise in the deep defense and led her high school team to the Mid Penn Championship as a senior. Local product Emily Harwood will look to get playing time up front and possesses a knack for getting in position to score goals. The lone midfi elder of the class of 2009 is Megan Henry. Henry is a workhorse in the middle of the fi eld, where she will learn from a host of talented players that are on the Eagles roster already. Reading, Pa. native Jesika Pufnock is a pure scorer at her forward position, where she led her high school team in scoring as a junior and senior. Irene Schickhardt, who comes to AU from Ludwigsburg, Germany, will bring an increased potency to the Eagle attack. Defender Erica Sheldon hails from Pasadena, Md., where she was a First Team All-State selection for Chesapeake High School. Katie Turner joins Bacon and Sheldon as a rookie defender in the Eagle backfi eld. Turner comes from one of the best high school 2003 & 2004 NCAA Tournament Appearances 7

2005 Season Outlook teams in Maryland, Severna Park, where she was an First Team All- State selection in her fi nal season. We are very excited about our incoming class, said Jennings. We expect several of the freshmen to challenge for playing time immediately and to dramatically increase the depth of our squad. The Schedule Coach Jennings and the Eagles have once again loaded the schedule with some of the best teams in the nation. AU will face off against six top-20 teams, three of which were NCAA Tournament teams last season, including the University of Maryland which made it to the semifi nals. Every season we have a diffi cult schedule and this year is no exception, said Jennings. Our opening weekend pits us on the road against two top-10 caliber teams in Richmond and Old Dominion. In October, we look forward to hosting ACC opponents Virginia and Maryland for the fi rst time in over a decade. Also on the schedule and ranked from last season are William & Mary and Cal- Berkeley. Last, but not least, we will host the perennial Ivy League powerhouse Princeton for our fi rst home game on the new turf. The Eagles start the season with a scrimmage against Colonial Athletic Conference Tournament Champion Delaware before opening the regular season with a road game against 10th-ranked Richmond. Last season the Eagles blanked the Spiders by a score of 2-0. American continues on the road to Old Dominion on Aug. 28. The Monarchs fi nished ranked 12th in the country last season and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Perhaps the most exciting pair of regular season games for the Eagles will come the fi rst weekend 8 in September. American hosts Princeton on Sept. 3, marking the fi rst time the Eagles will take to the fi eld at the brand new state-of-theart William I Jacobs Recreational Complex. For the past seven seasons AU has had no home fi eld to call their own, having to travel to local colleges to practice and play the majority of their home games. The following day the Eagles will host Albany. The next weekend American will travel to College Park, Md., to play in the Maryland Invitational. The Eagles will face Stanford on Sept. 10 and then take on 17th ranked Cal the next day. A pair of home games against Towson and Longwood on Sept. 18 and 25 prepare the Eagles for their fi rst Patriot League matchup against Bucknell on Oct. 1. William & Mary visits Washington, D.C., for a tilt with the Eagles on Oct. 2. American will embark on a threegame road trip starting on Oct. 8, when they take on Lafayette before heading to New Jersey to take on Big East opponent Rutgers. James Madison wraps up the nonconference road schedule before 2003 & 2004 Patriot League Champions the Eagles come home to host Lehigh and the 18th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers. Jennings and company will travel up to Worcester, Mass., for their fi nal home game to play PL opponent Holy Cross on Oct. 22. AU faces one of their toughest opponents of the season on Oct. 26, when the 2nd-ranked Maryland Terrapins come to town for the fi rst time since The Eagles fi nish up the regular season with a home game against Colgate, a rematch of last year s Patriot League Championship game. The 2005 Patriot League Tournament is slated to be held on Nov. 5 & 6, and for the fi rst time in two seasons, AU will have the opportunity to host if they garner the No. 1 seed. The NCAA Tournament fi rst and second rounds will be held on Nov. 12 & 13, with sites being determined as the conference tournaments fi nish up.
