Columbia Athletics FOLLOW LAST TIME OUT Sophomore Antonio Matarazzo headed home the game-winning goal off a Bryce Terrill corner kick with 12 seconds left to lift Columbia to a 2-1 defeat of Binghamton Wednesday at the Columbia Soccer Stadium. First-year Nicholas Pappacena scored his second goal of the year in the 59th minute to open the scoring, but the Bearcats countered with the equalizer off a free kick six minutes later. SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN Dartmouth enters Saturday s contest in search of its first Ivy League victory after beginning Ivy League play with three losses. The Big Green got back in the win column Tuesday night with a 1-0 win at Colgate. Alex Adelabu has paced the Big Green offense with 10 points and four goals. Colin Heffron and Stefan Defragger have also been important in the offense, posting three assists each. James Hickok and Stefan Cleveland have split time in goal for Dartmouth, as each has made six starts. Hickok holds the edge in GAA and save percentage at 0.59 and.875 percent, respectively. LAST TIME VS. DARTMOUTH The Big Green spoiled the Lions homecoming game last season, striking twice in the opening half and holding on for a 2-1 victory. Adelabu netted the first goal for Dartmouth in the eighth minute and Patrick Murray followed six minutes later with the second goal.

Commisso 71SEAS, 75BUS. Commisso was the co-captain of the 1970 men s soccer team, leading the Lions to their first NCAA Tournament appearance. The stadium became the fifth venue at the Baker Athletics Complex to be named after prominent and generous alumni. HOME DOMINATION The Lions are at the Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium this season. Columbia has shut out Manhattan and LIU Brooklyn and holds a 12-4 goal differential on its home pitch. SENIOR STANDOUT Senior midfielder David Najem is making his final year in a Columbia uniform count. With four goals and 11 points, he has already eclipsed his previous season highs. In helping Columbia defeat Manhattan and Northeastern with two goals and an assist, Najem was named Ivy League co-player of the Week on Sept. 23. BRICK WALL Just one week after Najem earned co-player of the Week honors, sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Jackson was recognized with the same award by the Ivy League. Jackson posted shutouts against LIU Brooklyn and Fordham to earn the award for the week of Sept. 30. WEEKLY RECOGNITION This season marks the first since 2011 that two Columbia student-athletes were recognized as Ivy League Player of the week in the same season. Najem (Sep. 5) and Ronnie Shaban (Nov. 7) earned the award that year. The last time Columbia had consecutive winners was 1993 when Rikki Dadason won the award the final two weeks of the year. Dadason also won the award earlier that season for SUCCESS IN SEVEN From Sept Oct. 12, the Lions posted a mark. The seven match streak without a loss was the longest such streak since when the Lions won the final five games of the 1995 campaign and the first three in

3 IMPENETRABLE WALL During the Lions seven match streak without a loss, they allowed just four goals and shutout four opponents. Kyle Jackson earned three of the shutouts in goal, but the Lions defensive was equally as important to Columbia s success. The back line has made it a point to limit opponents opportunities, holding its foes to just 11.7 shots per game. COMING UP CLUTCH Antonio Matarazzo has recorded a team-best three game-winning goals, including a header with 12 seconds left Wednesday, Oct. 23 to defeat Binghamton. OFFENSIVE ONSLAUGHT Through the first nine games of the 2013 season the Lions racked up 15 goals, three more than they scored the entire 2012 season. The Lions have scored 18 goals to date this season, the second-highest total in the Ancient Eight. SENIOR NIGHT HIGHLIGHTS Prior to Columbia s home game against Brown on Oct. 5, the Lions honored their seven seniors with a short ceremony. Seniors Will Stamatis and David Najem made sure to make it a memorable day, as Stamatis scored the Lions first goal and Najem notched the assist on the game-tying tally. TALE OF TWO HALVES The Lions doubled their first half goal total with two strikes Saturday, Oct. 5 against Brown. Of the Lions 18 goals this season, 13 have come after the halftime. TEAM EFFORT Of the 27 student-athletes on the men s soccer roster, 20 have started a game this season for Columbia. 5 KEVIN ANDERSON HEAD COACH FIFTH SEASON SOUTHERN CONN. ST. 92 A five-year veteran of Major League Soccer and former top assistant at Boston College, Kevin Anderson begins his fifth season at the helm of the Columbia men s soccer program in The 2012 season saw the Lions go 4-8-4, with seven of the eight losses coming by just one tally. Columbia s season was highlighted by five All-Ivy League selections. Senior defender Quentin Grigsby and junior midfielder David Najem were selected to the All-Ivy League second-team, while first-year goalkeeper Kyle Jackson, junior midfielder Henning Sauerbier and first-year defender Antonio Matarazzo garnered honorable mention accolades. Jackson was a star throughout the year, being named Ivy League Rookie of the Week on four occassions. As a team, the Lions received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for the fourth straight year. Teams across the country must post at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale to receive this honor. The Kevin Anderson coached Columbia men s soccer program, posted a grade point average of In 2011, Anderson led the Lions to their best record since 2003 with an overall record. A strong contender for the Ivy League title, Columbia took a third place league finish behind a record, the best since Under Anderson s direction, the Lions doubled their league wins from the year before and picked up a thrilling 2-1 double overtime victory over regular season league co-champion Brown. For the first time in seven seasons, six different Columbia players were named All-Ivy League, led by forward Will Stamatis. Stamatis was named to the first team for the first time in his career, while senior defender Ronnie Shaban, senior midfielder Mike Mazzullo, sophomore midfielder David Najem, junior midfielder Nick Scott and sophomore Sauerbier earned second team recognition. In 2010, Anderson guided the Lions to a record in its last four Ivy League games, including three straight shutouts to finish out the season. The four-match unbeaten Ivy League streak to close out the year was the longest for a Columbia team since , and the team had three consecutive clean sheets for the first time since Anderson brought in an impressive group of first-years in his first full recruiting class, led by Ivy League Rookie of the Year Henning Sauerbier. Sauerbier became the first Lion since 1980 to lead the club in scoring as a first-year. Fellow first-year David Najem also made an immediate impact, starting all 17 matches in the midfield en route to All-Ivy League honorable mention honors. In his first year as head coach at Columbia, Anderson saw his youthful club that featured nine first-years and nine sophomores battle hard against one of the nation s toughest schedules. Six opponents were ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25, and the Lions were within striking distance of winning all of them. Columbia notched its marquee victory of the year on Oct. 25 when it t ook down then-no. 15 Dartmouth on the road, 2-0. Anderson joined the Lions after serving as the Eagles assistant coach for three years, earning accolades as one of the nation s Top Assistant Coaches by College Soccer News in in 2007 and In 2008, he helped guide Boston College to a record, ACC regular-season and tournament titles and a berth into the NCAA Tournament. Anderson is no stranger to Morningside Heights. Immediately after his collegiate soccer career, he served as the Lions assistant coach. After playing professionally, Anderson returned to Columbia as the assistant men s soccer coach and also as the acting head coach in In his two years as assistant coach at Columbia, Anderson was an integral part of numerous aspects of the soccer program, including the team s strength and conditioning, day-to-day operations, academic support, and budgeting. In addition to his coaching duties, Anderson served as an adjunct professor of physical education. for the U.S. National team at the U-16, U-18 and U-20 levels. In 1998 he was a part of the Minnesota Thunder side that lost the A-League Championship game to the Rochester Raging Rhinos. Before playing for Minnesota, Anderson captured a national championship as a member of the Long Island Rough Riders in He spent two years coaching at his alma mater during his professional playing days and helped guide SCSU to back-to-back national titles in 1998 and Anderson earned his bachelor s degree in liberal studies from Southern Connecticut State University in He also holds a USSF National A Coaching License. 5
