The Pioneers step out of the Northeast Conference for their second to last non-conference game of the season, a trip to Hanover to face Dartmouth. Pioneers Split NEC Openers... The Pioneers split a pair of games in their opening weekend of NEC play. Sacred Heart opend the conference schedule with a 2-0 win over LIU on Friday. Sunday, the Pioneers dropped a 1-0 decision to St. Francis (NY). Sophomore Jason Tessitore and freshman Svetozar Gladic scored the Pioneer goals. All Time Series vs Dartmouth... This is the first meeting between Dartmouth and Sacred Heart. Scouting the Big Green... Dartmouth enters action with a mark on the season, coming off a loss to Princeton on Friday afternoon. Daniel Keat leads the Big Green attack with three goals and one assist on the season. Mike Ordonez has a pair of goals and Craig Henderson also has a tally on the season. In goal, keeper Rowan Anders has allowed just five goals in seven games and has posted three shutouts on the season. 2 Head Coach Joe Barroso Joe Barroso begins his second season as head coach of the Pioneer men s soccer team after eight seasons as head women s soccer coach at Sacred Heart University. Barroso made an immediate impact on the SHU men s team last year, engineering the second biggest single-season turnaround in a conference history, leading the Pioneers to the playoffs for the first time ever. Barroso is in his second stint at Sacred Heart after leaving for five years to coach at the University of Bridgeport. He returned to help the Pioneers make the transition to Division I and guided the women s team to three-straight Northeast Conference Tournaments and it s firstever NCAA Division I Tournament appearance. The 2001 women s program was the starting point for the Pioneer s recent run of success through the NEC. That season, the coach guided the team to its first post-season tournament appearance where they enjoyed a magical run, capturing their first-ever Northeast Conference Crown and spot in the NCAA s. For his efforts Barroso was named Coach-of-the-Year. He helped lay the foundation of the women s soccer program at Sacred Heart serving as head coach from He amassed a record of in those three years on sideline, receiving the regional Coach-of-the-Year award in At the University of Bridgeport, Barroso was named the New England Collegiate Conference Coach-of-the-Year in He was while coaching the women for four years. He also served as the head men s soccer coach for the Purple Knights from Originally from Portugal, Barroso played at Southern Connecticut State University, where he was a member of that school s Division II National Championship squad in 1990 and is eighth on the Owls all-time scoring list with 99 points (41 goals, 58 assists). His 41 goals are sixth on that all-time list. He was chosen as one of the top-25 players in the country after his senior season at SCSU and picked to play in the Senior Bowl. Barroso has played professionally both in Europe and the United States. He played for a First Division club in Portugal competing in the prestigious UEFA Cup and for both the Connecticut Wolves and the Boston Storm in the A-League of the USISL. Barroso was also a member of the United States National Team in The Dynamic Duo... Sophomore Jason Tessitore and freshman Jesper Fredriksson have formed a formidable One-Two punch up front thus far for the Pioneers. Fredriksson has burst on the scene in his rookie season, scoring six goals, tying him for the NEC lead. A first team All-Northeast Conference selection last year, Tessitore has provided the offensive spark for the Pioneers with two goals and four assists already on the year. All of his helpers have led directly to goals by Fredriksson. Goalie From Across the Pond... Just as vital to the Pioneer success is their defense, led by sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Jones Jones stormed onto the scene last fall, starting every game in his rookie season and posting a record with a 1.01 goals against average. His play earned him second team All-NEC honors as well as a nod to the NSCAA All-New England Men s Soccer Second Team. This year Jones has a 1.38 goals against average through nine games and posted shutouts against Maine and LIU. Newcomers Vital... For the second straight year, the Pioneers will welcome a strong recruiting class with freshmen expected to contribute immediately. Jesper Fredriksson will play up front alongside Tessitore. In the midfield the Pioneers welcome a pair of freshman from Serbia, Svetozar Gladic and Nemanja Filimonovic. Gladic has a pair of goals on the year. Honors... Freshman Jesper Parnevik was named Brine/ NEC Player and Rookie of the week for the week of September He scored five goals in three games to lead the Pioneers to a 2-1 week. His six goals and 12 points have him tied for the league lead. He is only the third dual Player/Rookie honoree in the last three years in the NEC. On the Road Again... The Pioneers will once again play a challenging schedule, with 10 road games and just six home contests on the schedule. The Pioneers will participate in the Nike Soccer Classic in Green Bay, WI September The Northeast Conference schedule gets underway September 29th when the Pioneers welcome Long Island to Campus Field. SHU will also host St Francis (PA), St. Francis (NY) and Robert Morris in NEC play. They will visit Fairleigh Dickinson, Central Connectiuct, Quinnipiac, Mount St. Mary s and Monmouth. A Deep League...The Northeast Conference appears to be seven or eight teams deep once again this year. Monmouth has emerged as the preseason favorite to capture the 2006 Northeast Conference men s soccer championship. The Hawks were awarded five first place votes, beating out Fairleigh Dickinson, which was picked second and corralled three first place votes. Central Connecticut State took the third spot in the poll, just ahead of Robert Morris.The Pioneers were picked for fifth place in the poll.
