The Panthers had a successful season, although they were picked to finish 12 th in the tournament. At the NCAA Championships, eight wrestlers represented the purple and old gold: Chris Helgeson (125), C.J. Ettelson (141), Jeff Harrison (149), Chris Bitetto (157), Nick Baima (165), Eric Hauan (174), Alex Dolly (184) and Sean Stender (197). By the conclusion of the three-day tournament, two Panthers were crowned all-americans. Seniors Stender and Hauan led UNI at the tournament, both earning all-america honors. Stender, who finished sixth in 2004 and fourth in 2003, cruised through the 197- pound bracket to the finals and took runner-up honors. The North Scott graduate from Donahue (Iowa) finished his senior campaign with a 34-7 overall mark, 11-3 in duals. He hung up his singlet with a career record. Stender was the first UNI wrestler since Justin Greenlee in 1995 to become a three-time all-american. Stender started his tournament run defeating Joel Flaggert of Oklahoma 13-6 and #12 seed Wynn Michalak from Central Michigan, 5-4. In quarterfinal action, Cornell s Morgan Horner was his next victim, falling by decision, 3-2. Stender completed one of the biggest upsets at the tournament when he routed #1 seed Jon Trenge of Lehigh 5-2 in the semifinals. Stender scored first with a takedown as time wound down in the first period. Trenge escaped early in the second period and Stender answered back with another takedown with a minute left. The Panther got an escape and fended off the Mountain Hawk as time ran out, earning a ticket to the finals. In the championship, Stender faced #2 Jake Rosholt of Oklahoma State, who had placed third at the tournament the previous season at 184 pounds. Stender had fallen to Rosholt 6-2 in dual action in the West Gym earlier in the season. Stender scored first, 30 seconds into the match, with a double leg takedown. Rosholt escaped at 2:18 and got a takedown half way through the period. Stender was warned for stalling in the last few seconds of the period. In the second period, Rosholt got an escape after the whistle and extended his lead 4-2. Stender battled it out in the third, taking Rosholt down with a double leg with only 30 seconds remaining in the match to tie it at four. Stender held on long enough to eliminate Rosholt s riding time as a factor, but the Cowboy inched an escape with 12 seconds remaining. Stender took a shot but could not muster a takedown in the waning seconds of the championship. He became the ninth Panther to three-peat at the National tournament at the Division I level and the first since Greenlee. Hauan made his fourth and final trip to the national tournament. Seeded ninth at 174 pounds, he faced Kelly Flaherty of Wisconsin in the first round. After defeating Flaherty by major decision, 13-1, he moved on to #8 Travis Frick of Lehigh. Frick led after the first period 1-0, but Hauan prevailed in the third, scoring an escape and a takedown to win the match 3-1. In the quarterfinal match, Hauan had the misfortune of being paired with the number one seed and defending national champion, Chris Pendleton. The Cowboy from Oklahoma State knocked Hauan into the consolation bracket, beating him by technical fall in 5:58. From that point, the Sturgis (SD) native fought his way back though the consolation bracket, defeating #7 Andy Roy from Rutgers 9-2 and #6 Mitch Hancock from Central Michigan. Hancock had pinned Hauan earlier in the season in 1:16, but Hauan got his revenge, defeating the Chippewa 7-4. Hauan faced a familiar foe in Illinois Pete Friedl on the way to third place, but his path was cut short 8-3. Hauan had defeated the fighting Illini for his third UNI Open championship. Hauan then faced #5 Joe Mazzurco of Cornell in the battle for fifth place. Mazzurco scored a takedown early in the match and Hauan got an escape. Mazzurco scored again with a minute left in the period and Hauan answered with an escape before the close. Mazzurco led 4-2 heading into the second period where he scored his third takedown in the closing seconds, giving him a 6-3 lead. In the third period, Mazzurco got an escape and held his lead to claim fifth place by a 7-3 decision over Hauan. Harrison had high expectations coming into the national tournament. Coming off a West Regional title and a 17-match win streak at 149 pounds, the senior was ready to let his presence be known at the NCAAs. He started his tournament run with an 8-4 victory over Virginia Tech s Tyde Prater. Harrison then fell to Central Michigan foe, #10 seed

2 Mark DiSalvo, 5-3 who went on to place eighth in the tournament. Harrison kept his tournament hopes alive, defeating Gardner-Webb s Daniel Elliot in the waning seconds of the match. In the third period, Harrison trailed 6-5, but he fought for the reversal with three seconds remaining to take the match 7-6. The Sloan (Iowa) native s tournament hopes came to an end in his fourth match of the tournament. Harrison faced off against Nebraska s Travis Shufelt and dominated the match until the third period. Behind 6-3, Shufelt escaped early in the third period and scored a takedown to even the match. With 10 seconds remaining, Shufelt had a one-point advantage and Harrison couldn t shake the Husker for an escape. Shufelt claimed the decision, 7-6, closing the Panther s collegiate career. Harrison went 2-2 at the tournament and ended his senior season with a 29-7 overall record and a career record. Josh Lawrenz saw limited action in his senior campaign but was a positive influence on and off the mat in his four years as a Panther. He was devoted in the wrestling room and was a key supporter of the team. Lawrenz tallied up eight wins and 16 losses in his career. Junior Helgeson made his second appearance at the NCAA tournament. He finished the regular season with an overall record, 7-5 in duals. He split time with redshirt freshman Adam Baumgartner while battling illness the second half of the season. He was healthy for the West Regional, claiming third place. He got a wild card bid to move on to nationals. Baumgartner managed to get his first pin at the varsity level in his limited time in the starting lineup and finished the season 6-5 overall, 2-1 in duals. The 133 slot was a toss-up all season long with newcomer Patrick Sharp, sophomore Ryan Osgood and redshirt freshman Jeremy Meyer all sharing the action. Junior transfer Patrick Sharp owned the position in the starting lineup until suffering an injury halfway through the season. Osgood and Meyer split time on the lineup from that point, but Osgood won the wrestle-off for a ticket to the West Regional. He took second place at the West Regional but fell short of an NCAA tournament appearance. Injury struck the Panther lineup again when heavyweight Michael Shedek was forced to sit out in late January. Sophomore transfer Jeff Knoll stepped in, moving up a big weight class from 197 pounds. He filled the shoes well, going 3-5 overall at heavyweight with a 3-3 dual record, including a sudden victory win over Northern Illlinois Joe Sapp. Junior Bitetto sat out for a short time with an injured knee early in the season. He held the 157-pound spot for the entire year and earned his second trip to the NCAA Championships after placing second and earning a wild card at the West Regional. He finished the season with a 9-6 dual record. Sophomore Baima also fought through injury, breaking a bone in his hand in early February. He recovered in time for the West Regional where he placed third and got a wild card bid for his second trip the NCAA tournament. Baima closed the season with a record, 7-5 in duals. Redshirt freshmen Dolly and Danny Dunning battled for the 184 spot throughout the second half of the season. Dolly claimed the spot for most of the season, compiling a overall, 2-9 dual record. He rolled through the 184-pound weight class to take the title at the West Regional, qualifying for nationals. Dunning went 2-2 while in the varsity lineup for the Panthers, including a win against Oklahoma State s Jack Jenson. He was one of only two Panthers to claim a win in the dual. Redshirt freshman C.J. Ettelson claimed the 141 spot in the lineup for most of the season, splitting time with redshirt junior Mark Manchio and fellow redshirt freshman Justin Swafford. Ettelson represented the purple and old gold at the West Regional, taking the 141 title to qualify for the NCAA tournament. He completed his first season as a Panther with a overall record and a 5-6 dual mark. UNI Finishes 8-7 in Dual Action The purple and old gold kicked off its season at the Harold Nichols Open with five champions. Newcomer Patrick Sharp (133), junior Mark Manchio (141), sophomore Nick Baima (165), and seniors Eric Hauan (174) and Sean Stender (197) all earned top place honors. The next meet for the Panthers was the Kaufman Brand Open in Omaha, Neb. C.J. Ettelson and Hauan took runner-up honors in the 141- and 174-pound weight classes, respectively. Junior Chris Bitetto (157) and senior Sean Stender (197) both placed third, Baima (165) and Sharp (133) finished fourth, while Eric Pedretti (184) and Jeff Harrison (149) took sixth place. The first dual competition of the season was against Wisconsin. The Panthers opened up a 6-0 lead with help from Michael Shedek at heavyweight and Chris Helgeson at 125. The Badgers went on to take the next four matches before Baima and Hauan put together back-toback wins. After a loss at 184, the Panthers were down three heading into the final match. Wisconsin s Ryan Flaherty slipped by Stender at 197 pounds to defeat the Panthers in the season opener. The Panthers hosted their annual UNI Open in early December. Hauan claimed his second championship of the season and his third consecutive UNI Open title. UNI had eight other place winners in the meet, with Stender (197) and Harrison (149) wrestling for second place. Baima lost in the first round at 165 pounds and then fought through the consolation bracket, winning six straight to claim third place. Ettelson also placed third in the 141-pound weight class, while Alex Dolly claimed sixth at 184 pounds. The ninth-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes came to the UNI-Dome for the Panthers second dual meet of the season. Iowa took an early 12-0 lead, winning three straight matches. Baima ended the Hawkeyes streak by defeating Oleg Polyatskiy 3-0. Hauan kept the momentum going, beating Luke Lofthouse 6-5. With a Hawkeye win at 184, the Panthers were down Stender then rolled up Dane Pape at 197 by major decision, Helgeson tallied a win at 125 pounds but it was not enough to get by the Hawks, as the Panthers suffered their second dual loss of the season, Head coach Brad Penrith s wrestlers had little time to recover after the Iowa dual, traveling to Rochester, Minn. only three days later to face the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Panthers gave Minnesota a run for its money, taking half of the matches, but fell to the Gophers Stender started the Panthers off with a major decision victory. Shedek fell to #2 Cole Konrad, Helgeson fell to #5 Bobbe Lowe and Sharp fell to #6 Mark Reiter. Redshirt freshman Ettelson started a hot streak for the Panthers when he won his match by injury default, putting six points on the board. Harrison followed suit, rolling up Tommy Owen by major decision. Bitetto got another win for the Panthers by decision, 8-4, to put UNI on top with only three matches remaining. Baima suffered a loss but Hauan got a win to put the score at going into the final match. Thirteenth-ranked Roger Kish was too much for redshirt freshman Dolly, getting a pin to win the match and the dual After a two-week break, the UNI wrestling team traveled to the annual Midlands Championships. The Panthers finished sixth out of 10 teams with 76.5 points. Three wrestlers placed in Stender and Harrison and Baima. Harrison pinned two opponents on his way to claiming third place at the renowned tournament. His only loss came in the third round to sixth-ranked Ty Eustice of Iowa. He went on to win four consecutive matches in consolation, including a 7-0 decision over Darren McKnight of Michigan State. After placing eighth last year at Midlands, Stender wrestled his way to third place honors this year. He pinned his first opponent in 37 seconds and then let a close match slip to 16 th -ranked Tyrone Byrd of Illinois. He went on to defeat four wrestlers, including Phil Davis of Penn State for bronze at 197.

3 Baima was looking for his first place finish at the event and he found it. He won his first two matches, the second by pinning Nick Ammerman of UW-La. in 1:46. Travis Paulson hooked up Baima in the third round. Baima lost a close one to the ninth-ranked Cylone, 5-4. He then split his next four matches, placing fifth. The Panthers got their first dual meet win of the season at home against Tennessee-Chattanooga, Stender and Bitetto scored half the team points, both pinning their opponents. Redshirt freshman Jeremy Meyer made his varsity debut at 133 pounds with a 10-3 victory. UNI improved to 3-3 after hosting Eastern Illinois and Virginia Tech in a three-team dual. The Panthers chalked up their seventh dual loss of the season, Starting with the Northern Illinois Huskies, the Panthers won the remainder of their dual schedule, winning four straight. UNI handled NIU especially in the heavier weights, taking wins at 174, 184, 197 and 285. Hauan won by tech fall, while Stender chalked up his sixth pin of the season. Sophomores Jeff Knoll and Ryan Osgood did not receive wildcards to go on to the national tournament. Knoll moved up to heavyweight from 197 to fill in for an injured Michael Shedek at the end of January. Osgood took second place at the West Regional at 133 but it was not enough to get him to the NCAA s. HOME SWEET DOME Forget about hotel rooms and overnight bus rides. UNI will host the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in 2006 and Thousands of people will pack the UNI-Dome and the Cedar Valley for the twoday event on Jan , UNI hosted the NWCA all-star meet in and in 1997 the UNI-Dome was sold out for every session of the NCAA Championships. The University of Northern Iowa is excited to welcome the top wrestling programs in the nation and their fans to the Cedar Valley, Director of UNI Athletics Rick Hartzell said. We are looking forward to showcasing the NWCA and bringing another major event to our campus and community. WRESTLING WITH POWERHOUSES Throughout the season, the Panthers faced stiff competition at tournaments and on their dual meet schedule. Nine of the 11 schools UNI competed against was ranked in the top 15. This lofty schedule has led the Panthers to compete against premiere universities around the country. In fact, the average student enrollment of the teams on the dual schedule is 26,916. Compared to UNI s 12,824, it is fair to say the Panthers held their own against bigger schools in the country. CENTURY MARK Senior Eric Hauan recorded 111 victories as a Panther. Number 100 came against eighth-ranked Nick Passolano of Iowa State on Jan. 15, 2005 in Hilton Coliseum. Hauan scored a takedown and a twopoint near fall in overtime to defeat Passolano 7-2 (SV). He was 32-9 overall this year, 12-3 in duals. He has a winning percentage of.760 with a collegiate record of Hauan won 11 consecutive matches from 11/27 to 12/29. RALLY TIME Juniors Chris Helgeson and Chris Bitetto gave Panther fans a thrill against Virginia Tech (Jan. 8). Helgeson started the dual, earning over half of his points in the final 14 seconds of the 9-8 come-frombehind victory. Trailing 8-4, Helgeson escaped and scored a takedown and a two-point near fall in the waning seconds. Bitetto s match was the final one of the day and all eyes were on the Hackensack (NJ) native and Hokie Reed Carpenter. The score was four-all at the start of the third period, then Carpenter escaped. Bitetto went on the offensive front, scoring a takedown at the 30- second mark and riding it out to win 6-5. FIGHTING THROUGH IT Senior Eric Hauan suffered a slight knee injury in the championship match of the UNI Open. Although in pain, he wrestled against Iowa s Luke Lofthouse and Minnesota s Gabriel Dretsch, defeating both in the week following the injury. Entering the season, senior Jeff Harrison had an injury. After that, he put the pain behind him. He said not concentrating on the injury and wrestling without hesitation produced the best results. Junior Chris Bitetto suffered a knee injury in practice Dec. 3, but was back in the lineup by Dec. 9 to face the Hawkeyes. He slightly reinjured his knee wrestling against Chattanooga on Jan. 3 but stayed in the match to record a technical fall. Bitetto and Hauan both wore specially designed knee braces for precaution. Sophomore Nick Baima broke a bone in his hand Feb. 9 during practice. He took a few weeks off and stepped back on the mat sporting a soft cast for the West Regional, where he qualified for the national tournament despite the injury. WHAT A WEEK Many times the week before finals is called Dead Week. The Panthers week before final exams was quite contrary to that. UNI hosted the UNI Open on Dec. 5 and welcomed national powerhouse Illinois, along with top wrestlers from Central Michigan, Nebraska- Omaha, William Penn, Northern Illinois, North Dakota State and South Dakota State. It then hosted ninth-ranked Iowa in the UNI- Dome the following Thursday and traveled to Rochester, Minn. for a dual with seventh-ranked Minnesota Sunday, Dec. 12. Overall, UNI faced 14 wrestlers ranked in the top 20 in an eightday period. DON T BLINK The Panthers pinned four opponents in less than a minute this season. Sean Stender took down Cleveland State s Joe Phillips in 37 seconds in the first round of the Midland Championships. Stender pinned seven wrestlers this season. Senior Eric Hauan pinned Iowa State s Grant Turner on Nov. 13 at the Harold Nichols Open. It took Hauan only 37 seconds to seal the deal, his fastest pin in collegiate action. Redshirt freshman Dan Dunning picked up his first pin for the Panthers at the Harold Nichols Open, taking down his opponent in 47 seconds. Mark Manchio took down Joel Karr of Illinois in an outstanding 28 seconds at the UNI Open. Two years ago, Manchio pinned Anthony Byers from Dana College in 18 seconds at the Open. MOVING ON UP National qualifier, sophomore Nick Baima, wrestled at 165 pounds this year. He competed at 157 last year, sacrificing weight for the team. Baima proved he had no trouble with the new weight, dominating in Panther wrestle-offs and the Harold Nichols Open. He pinned his first three opponents of the season at the Open. [Baima] is an extremely hard worker, probably the hardest worker on the team, Penrith said. He puts his head down, he gets in there and gets the job done. He is also a very bright kid on the Dean s List.

Overall, the Panthers finished sixth with 76.5 points. Harrison pinned two opponents on his way to claiming third place at the renowned tournament. His only loss came in the third round to sixth-ranked Ty Eustice of Iowa. Eustice managed to score a quick takedown in the final 10 seconds of the match, winning 3-2. Harrison went on to win four consecutive in consolation, including a 7-0 decision over Darren McKnight of Michigan State. Harrison s record improves to 14-4 at 149 pounds. After placing eighth last year at Midlands, Stender wrestled his way to third-place honors this year. Stender pinned his first opponent in 37 seconds and then let a close match slip to 16 th - ranked Tyrone Byrd of Illinois. He went on to defeat four wrestlers, including Phil Davis of Penn State, for bronze at pounder Baima was looking for his first place finish at the event and he found it. Baima won his first two matches, the second by pinning Nick Ammerman of Wisconsin-Lacrosse in 1:46. Travis Paulson hooked up Baima in the third round, though. Baima lost a close one to the ninth-ranked Cyclone, 5-4. He then split his next four matches, placing sixth. UNI OPEN (Dec. 5) Senior Eric Hauan claimed his second championship of the season at the UNI Open (Dec.5). It was Hauan s third consecutive UNI Open title, although the final victory did not come easy for the 174 pounder.
