With South Carolina leading the series two-games-to -one after their 5-2 win over the Royals on Thursday here at Santander Arena, it s difficult to overstate the importance of Game Four particularly to the Royals. In fact, Royals fans have seen this scenario more than once before and have seen it go all sorts of ways. If you look back to the 2013 Eastern Conference Semi-Final best-of-seven matchup against the Florida Everblades, the Royals lost Game One (on home ice), bounced back to win Game Two, and (as with the current series against the Stingrays) fell in Game Three (in Estero, Florida) to go down two-games-to-one. In the critical Game Four in that series, Reading fell behind early, but bounced back to take a 2-1 lead on a goal by rookie defenseman Domenic Jalbert in the third period. Unfortunately, the Everblades tied that game at two with just 1:06 remaining in regulation. Undaunted, the Royals T.J. Syner bagged an overtime game winner on a beautiful breakaway feed from Ethan Cox to win that game and even the series at two games apiece. Of course, from there, Reading needed additional lategame and overtime heroics to win Game Five in Florida and ultimately took the series in seven games (on home ice) on the way to winning the Kelly Cup. We can contrast that with last season, when (once again) Reading lost Game One in the first round best-of-seven series against the Fort Wayne Komets; then bounced back to win Game Two; and (like the current series) fell in Game Three to go down two-games-to-one. In the critical Game Four in that series, the Royals outshot and out-chanced the Komets in Fort Wayne, but were only able to solve goaltender Ben Meisner once a late first-period power play goal by Stanislav Galiev while Fort Wayne notched a goal in each of the three periods on Riley Gill to take Game Four and put themselves in a position to end the Royals season in Game Five, which they promptly did in double-ot. So, which version of Game 4 are we going to get tonight? There s only one way to find out...let s drop the puck. READING v SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS (Loss, 2-5) 2 THURSDAY, APRIL 23, 2015 On Thursday, with the two teams tied at one game apiece, the Royals came out storming, much like the team did in last Saturday s 4-2 win at North Charleston Coliseum over the Stingrays. However, instead of piling on for three in the first period (as they did in Game Two), Reading was able to only muster one goal on 17 first period shots with David Marshall swiping home a rebound of a Mike Marcou shot 2:40 into the contest. Then, for the third straight game, South Carolina came alive in the second period, racking up three goals two of which came on costly turnovers by the Royals and the third of which resulted from a defensive miscue while playing short-handed. Reading drew within one on a late second period short-handed goal by Marshall; but the stifling Stingray defense held Reading to just five third period shots, while South Carolina picked up an insurance goal mid-way into the final frame and added an empty netter to win going away. HEIDELBERG COUNTRY CLUB SHOTS OF GAME Playing in his first playoff game ever at Santander Arena, David Marshall became the second Royal in this series to bag a multi-goal performance (Jordan Heywood being the other), notching a pair of goals including a dramatic short-handed goal. Marshall, who has had at least a point in all three games in this series (2g-2a) has 13 points (6g-7a) in 14 career ECHL playoff games. Tonight is Ryan Cruthers 33rd career playoff game as a Royal, surpassing Yannick Tifu and Ethan Cox for second most all-time. Alex Berry holds the team record with 37 playoff games as a Royal. Including the regular season, the Royals power play has not scored a goal against the Stingrays all season long, going 0-19 against So Co so far with the man advantage and 0-7 in this series.
