32 READING ROYALS BIOGRAPHIES

33 HEAD COACH LARRY COURVILLE Position: Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Age: 40 ( ) Home Town: Timmins, Ontario; Resides: Palmyra, Pennsylvania is Larry Courville s seventh full season as the head coach and director of hockey operations for the Royals and his eighth year leading the team, as he took over the reigns mid-season in (Jnaury 6, 2009). Over his first six full seasons as the Royals coach, Courville, who is currently the longest tenured active coach with the same team in the ECHL, has won more regular season games than any other coach in the league during that time span. The 269 wins he has compiled in that time span places him thirteenth in all-time regular season ECHL wins among coaches. His 470 regular seaon games coached is sixteenth most in league history. However, only four coaches have coached more regular season games than Larry Courville and compiled a higher win percentage (.615) (Davis Payne:.654; Malcolm Cameron,.631; Jason Christie,.616; and Gerry Flemming,.616). Only ten coaches in the history of the ECHL have won more playoff games than Courville (35). Last season, Courville led the Royals to his third consecutive season of 45 wins or more and the fourth time in the last five years in which the team has won more than 40. Last year s team established a new team record for wins on the road (24) and fewest road losses (8). In fact, Courville s teams have won 20 or more on the road for five consecutive years, compiling an overall road record during that time span of , which translates into a.653 win percentage. (Overall, Courville is =.621 on home ice; and =.609 on the road.) Courville is the all-time team leader in games coached (470), wins (269), and win percentage (.615, which is tied with Derek Clancey: ). Courville s most notable season with Reading to date may be when he and his players not only established the team record for most wins (46) (tied in ), but also set team records for fewest losses (19), most points in the standings (99), and highest win percentage (.688). That team, of course, advanced to win the Kelly Cup Championship. Courville, who has led the Royals to the playoffs in all six of his full seasons as the team s head coach, is tenth all-time in league history with 63 post-season games coached. His 35 playoff wins is eleventh all-time. Courville is the sixth coach in the twelve year history of the team. He took the head coaching reigns of the Royals mid-way in the season, on January 6, 2009, when the team had a record of In the final 38 games of that regular season, the Courvilleled Royals went Since that time Courville s teams have collectively gone 108 games over.500 ( ), which translates into a.630 win percentage. During that time span, the Royals have won two regular season conference titles ( and ) and three regular season division titles ( , , and ). This stint with the Royals is the first pro head coaching assignment for Courville, who served as the general manager, facility director, and hockey operations supervisor of a Lancaster, Pennsylvania, ice rink for over two years after completing his final full season as a player in

34 With respect to his playing career, Courville, a third round pick of the Vancouver Canucks in 1995, played in more than 600 pro hockey games, including 33 in the National Hockey League with the Canucks. During his playing career, Courville, who served as team captain during no fewer than six of his nine full-time playing seasons, racked up over three hundred points and a thousand penalty minutes. He was named as the team s Most Valuable Player for the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League in Prior to turning pro, Courville, who originally hails from Timmins, Ontario, was twice a member of Team Canada Gold Medal championship teams in international play, including the 1995 World Junior U-20 Championship, during which he played an integral role on his home country s team that went undefeated during the world s premiere amateur tournament. Courville played all or parts of five different seasons with the Royals, starting with a short stint during the team s inaugural year ( ) and culminating with ten games played on an as-needed basis during the season. In addition to earning the respect of his teammates and the admiration of the fans in Reading for his gritty and relentless style of play, Courville also received the Royals Unsung Hero Award at the conclusion of the season and the team s Heart Award in On October 22, 2006, Courville became the first person ever inducted into the Reading Eagle Wall of Honor at the Sovereign Center, which honors members of the Royals organization who have made signficant contributions to the success of the team. Perhaps not surprisingly, on the day that he was inducted into the Wall of Honor, Courville dressed for an undermanned Royals team and played an instrumental part in the 5-3 victory over the Pensacola Ice Pilots. His efforts that day included scoring a late-game goal to ice the team s win. On October 30, 2011, while in his role as the team s head coach, Courville became the first former player in team history to have his number (#22) retired by the team. Larry and his wife, Shannon, and their two young daughters (MaKenna and Morgan) and young son (Mason), currently reside in Palmyra, Pennsylvania.
