Our spiritual advisors have exhorted us from time immemorial to let bygones be bygones, but some bygones and harder to say goodbye to than others...and when you follow up a Kelly Cup Championship with a record setting regular season only to get bumped out of the playoffs in the first round, well that s one that s going take a while to shake. Such was the story for the Royals and Komets last season, when Reading went into the first round Eastern Conference Quarterfinal playoff series the top seed in the East and a heavy favorite over the eighth seeded Komets only to get a cold slap in the face. Now, admittedly, neither the Royals nor Komets have returned many players from last year s playoff rosters, so payback may not be as much on the collective mind of the current Royals as simply beating the top team in East the position currently held by Fort Wayne, one of the all-time great cities in minor pro hockey history. Tonight is Free Shirt Friday presented by V&M Towing, and we re honoring goaltender Ben Scrivens, who began his pro career in 2010 with Reading and has advanced to become an NHL regular now with Edmonton. LAST TIME OUT WHEELING (Loss 2-3) 2 Saturday, November 1, 2014 In a game replete with squandered opportunities, the Royals had very few chances in the early going, failing to muster even a single shot on goal in the first fifteen minutes, and, by that time, Wheeling was already leading 2-0. The Royals Cam Reid did break through early in the second, when it was Reading s turn to hold the Nailers off the shot board; but, unfortunately, one of Wheeling s three shots in that period snuck through and proved to be the game winner. The Royals pulled the game to within one with a late-game pulled-goaltender power play goal, but that wouldn t be enough, as goaltender Martin Ouellette fell victim (again) to a lack of run support. FORT WAYNE V KALAMAZOO (Win, 5-4) 5 Saturday, November 1, 2014 In the second of a two-game set with Kalamazoo, Fort Wayne avenged their first loss of the season the night before by racking up four goals in the first 23 minutes, and then holding on for dear life as the K-Wings charged from behind. Mitchell Heard bagged two goals for the Komets, while Colorado Avalanche goaltending prospect Sami Aittokallio won in his first game for Fort Wayne. HEIDELBERG COUNTRY CLUB SHOTS OF GAME Forward Adam Hughesman is riding a five game point streak (3g-5a). Hughesman, who has had three multi-point games in his first six played as a Royal, is tied for the team lead with two power play goals. Hughesman leads the Royals with twenty-six shots on goal. Cam Reid has also picked up a point and one assist in each of his last five games (2g-5a). Reid registered his team leading third power play assist on Adam Hughesman s PPG last Saturday. Olivier Labelle, who leads the Royals in plus-minus at plus-4 (+4), has picked up at least one point in four of his six games played this season. Labelle is currently fifth on the all-time scoring list for Reading with 136 career points (73g-63a) in 162 games 3 points behind Brad Rooney. Defenseman Zach Davies five points (2g-3a) places him tied for seventh in scoring amongst defensemen in the ECHL. Goaltender Connor Knapp, who has stopped fifty-eight of the last sixty shots he s faced, is riding a two game win streak. Knapp s 2.34 goals against average places him nineteenth amongst goaltenders in the league. Knapp has stopped 79 of the 86 total shots he s faced for a.919 save %.
