15 RESULTS Scheidel, White Earn NCAA Bids, Lions Finish Fourth At EIWAs BETHLEHEM, Pa. Markus Scheidel and Tyrel White earned automatic bids into the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Tournament when Columbia took home its best finish at the EIWA Championships since , finishing in fourth place with 82 points. White earned a spot in the third place match after an impressive victory over Johnathan Schleifer of Princeton. In a re-match of a multiple-overtime loss for White, the first-year had it today. The score was tied, 3-3, going into the third, but White was able to add three points in the final period, defeating Schleifer and securing at least fourth place in a weight class that had four automatic bids. In his final match of the day, White held a 2-1 lead on Army s Coleman Gracey going into the third period. Gracey was able to earn an escape and a takedown, knocking off White, 4-2. The first-year ended the EIWA s in fourth place at 4-2, but more importantly earns the NCAA automatic bid. For Scheidel, the EIWA s produced his first match since Jan. 25, in what had been an injury-ridden season for the sophomore. In a tough weight class that produced the most NCAA automatic bids in the conference with seven, Scheidel did exactly what he needed to do in order to advance. The No. 5 seed started his tournament with a 7-0 win over Princeton s Rich Eva. After a loss to Russell Parsons of Army, Scheidel got by Hofstra s Jahlani Callender, 3-2. Scheidel looked well on his way to the third place match, but Penn s Brooks Martino denied the Bay Village, Ohio native in a 8-1 win for the Quaker. The loss to Martino sent Scheidel to the seventh place match, with a win producing an NCAA bid. Scheidel had a rematch of his first round opponent, and caught Princeton s Eva early, pinning him in 30 seconds to earn a trip to St. Louis. In addition to Scheidel and White, first-year heavyweight Garrett Ryan Also earned an at-large bid to the NCAAs, giving Columbia three wrestlers competing in St. Louis. Columbia tied the record for the most place winners for the Lions at the EIWA Championships with the 2007 squad that also placed eight wrestlers. Johnson Mai (125), Angelo Amenta (133), Shane Hughes (174), Zack Hernandez (184), Matt Idelson (197) and Garrett Ryan (HWT) also got their pictures taken on the podium. 15
