That breaks down to 13 players from the metro Atlanta area and four from other cities within the state. The most come from Gwinnett County (4) with a trio from Collins Hill (Abraham, Cisic, Mendoza). Alarape is from Archer High. Other cities represented include Athens (Trevino), Columbus (Bingham), Macon (Joyner) and Warner-Robins (Little). COACH BRETT SURRENCY The 33-year old is in his sixth year as head coach at Georgia State with a all-time mark. He was a two-time all-conference defender and all-region pick with Jacksonville University (Class of 2003). Guided Georgia State to CAA Championship and NCAA berth in 2011 with highest RPI of No. 26 that season. Season ended with final RPI of No. 45. Had played drafted in MLS (Michael Nwiloh in 2014) and last year s goalie (C.J. Cochran) is playing with Atlanta Silverbacks of NASL. Fourth year of six years of.500 or better record. Marcus Holm was a starter before an injury. The team has six sophomores, making 15 players in their first or second seasons as a Panther (Rashid Alarape, Jad Elkhalil, Everick Little, Andrew Thompson, Jake Bingham, Luke Oesterle). GSU also blended in three junnior transfers, also playing their first season in the blue of white. (Nenad Smiljanic, Casey Shultis, Jon Nelson). 2 STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE Georgia State played five teams in the Top 80 RPI during the regular season. The Panthers lost to No. 1 (Wake Forest), No. 67 (Illinois-Chicago) and No. 68 (Mercer). The Panthers defeated No. 57 (Brown) and No. 77 (UNF). GSU faced three first-place teams (ACC, Horizon and Sun Belt) and two second-place teams (Ivy, Atlantic Sun). In the Sun Belt, Hartwick is No. 99, Georgia State No. 142, Appalachian State No Georgia Southern No. 160 and NJIT No Vs. GEORGIA SOUTHERN Georgia State owns a all-time series record over in-state rival Georgia Southern. GSU had a streak of 7 wins and 2 ties end during last year s Sun Belt Championship when the Eagles edged the Panthers 2-1 in the tournament match on Southern s home field in Statesboro. Prior to that tournament win, Southern s last win in the series had come in GSU is in the last 11 total matches. Coach Surrency is 4-1 in his six years at GSU against Southern. Georgia State has 17 Georgians and 13 from metro Atlanta, while Southern has 12 players from metro Atlanta. So, the players have competed most of their soccer careers. Vs. HARTWICK The Hawks have edged by Georgia State twice in this new Sun Belt series. In 2014, Georgia State scored quickly in the 7th minute, but GSU gave it back on a own goal when the ball bounced off a GSU defender and into the goal. The winning goal by Hartwick came in the 69th minute. This year, in New York, Hartwick capitalized on a GSU defensive mistake at 54:15 to score the only goal of the match. There were 33 fouls and three yellow cards in the defensive match. GSU had a shot advantage, a 4-2 shots on goal advantage and an 8-3 corner kick advantage as they penetrated deep into the Hartwick defense. The Panther defense was solid, allowing just those two shots on goal, but that one critical error ruined what would have been a shutout. Vs. APPALACHIAN STATE Georgia State owns a 5-3 series lead over the host Mountaineers. The Panthers won 3-0 this year on a match play at Georgia Gwinnett College on all-weather turf, due to heavy rains in Atlanta. In 2014, Georgia State claimed a 1-0 overtime win. In 2013, Georgia State posted a 2-1 victory. Appalachian State s last win over GSU came on 9/10/ SUN BELT STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK EUROPEAN INFLUENCE This year s roster includes 9 student-athletes who played soccer in European countries. Six of those nine hail from the United Kingdom with a pair from Liverpool, England (Akande, Fitzsimmons), and one from Barnsley (Smiljanic), Felixstowe (Wilding), London (Haines) and Wokingham (Hemmings). One Panther hails from Ireland (Acheson), one from Germany (Burmeister) and one from Sweden (Holm). The 12-member Academic All-District team represents players in colleges in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. A midfielder from Felixstowe, England, Wilding has ranked in the top 20 in the NCAA in scoring and assists all season for the Panthers on the soccer field. Now, he is on the elite 12-member team with his cumulative 3.63 four-year college GPA in the classroom. Eddie conducts himself with the utmost professionalism whether that be on the field or in the classroom and is a great example for our younger players, head coach Brett Surrency said. He has had such a positive impact on our program and it is sad to think that his time with our program is coming to a close. That being said, I know whichever career path that he ultimately chooses he will find a great deal of success. It marks a second consecutive year for Georgia State to have a men s soccer student-athlete earn this honor as Chris Locandro was chosen in GSU had four student-athletes earn All-District in the school year. CONFERENCE LEADERS GSU leads the Sun Belt in almost every offensive category: First in Shots (14.69) and First in Points (99, 6.19) First in Goals (38, 2.38) and First in Assists (23, 1.44) First in Corner Kicks (101, 6.31); Scored 17 goals, Allowed 6 goals First in Penalty Kicks (6 attempted, 5 made) First in being Offsides (43, 2.69) because they re always attacking Longest current winning streak (3 matches) Georgia State has had six players earn the Sun Belt s weekly award for Student-Athlete of the Week. Eddie Wilding was a two-time winner for Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 29 and Oct. 6. Hannes Burmeister was also a two-time winner for Offensive honors on both Oct. 13 and Nov. 3. Goalkeeper Greyson Walldorff started the season as Defensive Student- Athlete of the Week on Sept. 1. Defender Conor Acheson earned his Defensive Award on Oct. 6.
