History in the Making Overall: ACC: Home: Away: Neutral 0-1 Overtime: The Georgia State men s soccer team is making its first-ever trip to the NCAA Championship. It s part of a historical season that has shattered expectations and past program benchmarks. The Panthers, led by second-year head coach Brett Surrency, were picked to finish 12th in the 12-team CAA in the preseason coaches poll. Not discouraged, the Panthers raced out to a start by battling through an injury to starting goalkeeper Vincent Foermer to earn four shutout victories against difficult non-conference competition. GSU dropped a narrow 1-0 game at No. 20 USF, now the No. 9 team in the nation, before tying UAB 1-1, currently 20th in the country and 11th in the RPI. Redshirt freshman CJ Cochran made his career debut and notched 10 saves vs. Blazers. The Panthers earned their first bit of history by knocking off NC State 1-0 on Sept. 27. The win was GSU s first ever over the Wolfpack in three tries and its first win over an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent since a 2-1 win at No. 6 Clemson on Sept. 5, Junior Jamal Keene s first career goal in a GSU uniform led the team to victory. Georgia State earned a historical 1-0 win over No. 22 William & Mary. The win was the first GSU victory over a ranked opponent since the win over No. 6 Clemson in It was the first victory at home over a top 25-ranked opponent in school history and the third-straight shutout win for GSU, its first such streak since the first three games of the 1987 season. Sophomore Evan Scott netted the first GSU hat trick since 1997 to lead the Panthers to a 4-2 victory over Drexel on Oct. 16. He scored all three of his goals in the second half during a 24-minute span. Two days later, the NCAA released its RPI rankings which had GSU No. 27 in the nation. It was the highest ranking in program history and has since been bested by the No. 26 ranking on Oct. 26. Scott once again found the back of the net on a beautiful corner kick from freshman Jordan Weise to power the Panthers to a 1-0 win at VCU to clinch at CAA Tournament berth. It was the first tournament berth for GSU since the 2004 season and the first time it qualified for the CAA Tournament since it joined the conference in The sixth-seeded Georgia State notched its first conference tournament victory in a 2-1 win over third-seeded William & Mary in the CAA quarterfinals. Sophomore Stephen McGill tied the match at one in the second half before Scott polished off the victory with a second half goal. This season is part of a remarkable turnaround for Georgia State men s soccer (13-7-1, 6-5) under Surrency as the Panthers are two years removed from a four-win season. Facebook.com/GSUMensSoccer

GAME NOTES on Oct. 29. It was the first time many of the players, with 20 of them being from Georgia, had seen snow. WORTH THE WAIT Georgia State redshirt sophomore Caleb Kernan scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over UNC Wilmington on Oct. 12. It was the first goal for the freshman since netting a goal in a 3-1 win over Drexel on Oct. 10, MCGILL, FOR THREE! Sophomore Stephen McGill became the first GSU players since 2004 to score three penalty kick goals in a season this year. The midfielder drilled home the gamewinning goal late in the second half vs. Mercer on Sept. 9. He also netted the game-winning goal in overtime in a 1-0 victory over Hofstra on Oct. 1. He earned his third of the season to spark a last-minute comeback at No. 11 Old Dominion on Oct. 19. KEENE SENSES Sophomore midfielder Jamal Keene scored GSU s lone goal in a 1-0 win at NC State on Sept. 27. Keene fired in a ball off the foot of classmate Stephen McGill in the 11th minute for the eventual game winner. The win was GSU s first ever victory over NC State n three tries and its first win over an ACC opponent since travelling to No. 6 Clemson and upsetting the Tigers 2-1 on Sept. 5, STELLAR DEBUT Panthers redshirt freshman CJ Cochran faced a daunting challenge in his career debut. Cochran needed medical clearance to play in GSU s match, which was on the road against a team receiving votes for the Top 25 in UAB. Cochran responded with a heroic 10-save performance to help GSU tie UAB 1-1. Cochran allowed one goal on a penalty kick. He stopped the initial shot, but was whistled for leaving his line and couldn t stop the second. The 10 saves were the most by a goalkeeper in a match since Vincent Foermer made 10 stops in a 0-0 tie at UNC Wilmington last season. THREE AT THE BUZZER GSU scored three goals in 10 minutes to earn a 3-0 victory over Presbyterian on Sept. 5. Junior Peter Vania started the scoring onslaught with a header in the 81st minute. Junior midfielder Yasser Majluf and sophomore forward Evan Scott followed with unassisted goals. Scott s tally came with just 15 seconds left on the clock. TWINS ARE A DOUBLE BLESSING The Panthers feature three sets of twins on their squad this year. Junior midfielder Victor Nkhoma, a native of Harare, Zimbabwe, has an identical twin sister, Tendai. Sophomore defender Chris Locandro also has an identical twin sister, Nicole, who is a midfielder for the University of Georgia s women s soccer team. Nicole s Bulldogs play at Duke on Friday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Finally, a native of Tipperary, Ireland, freshman midfielder Caolan O Gorman has yet another soccer-playing twin sister, Aoife (EE-fah). Now, as the leader of the program, he hasn t wasted any time stamping his mark on its future. Appointed head coach prior to the 2010 season, Surrency quickly orchestrated a Panthers turnaround from a losing season to their best finish in the Colonial Athletic Association since they joined the conference in The initial year laid the groundwork for his program s philosophy going forward: High expectations, hard work and excellence on the field of play. With a background as a two-time, all-conference defender, Surrency brings to GSU a system that will be organized and disciplined on the back end. On the offensive side, the Panthers showed flashes of a quick-strike counter attack last season that Surrency will look to ignite in 2011 and beyond. The 2010 men s soccer team embodied the hard-working, disciplined approach of its new head coach. Surrency guided the team through debilitating losses that forced several key members, including four-year starter Joe Castaldo and 2009 All-CAA third team member Chris Peacos, off its back line. The Panthers fought to a overall record and an eighth-place finish in the CAA. The Gainesville, Fla. native saw his team accomplish many firsts in his initial year at the helm, including winning its CAA opener for the first time in school history and notching its first win over NCAA Tournament participant Old Dominion in an emotional 4-3 decision. But Surrency holds higher expectations for his Panthers, mainly to contend for a CAA Tournament bid next year and beyond. Surrency said the competition in the CAA is not given enough credit, as evidenced by a historic season of parity last year. Success, he said, will require plenty of hard work. As a former dedicated, Division I student-athlete, Surrency expects his players to accept his challenge of a bluecollar mentality and prime conditioning he sets forth. Fitness is a huge part of our program and quite a high demand that we place on the players, Surrency said. I m a big believer in trying to reach the full potential, fitnesswise, and feel that it can be an ultimate separator at the end of a game.

Surrency set the tone for future teams by recruiting an accomplished (each brings high-level club experience) six-member freshmen class in With a mix of local and international talent, the Georgia State men s soccer program will be apt for improvement in the coming years. We are trying to bring in players that will fit into our vision for the program. Surrency said. We put in the work to find out which kids will be a good fit for the program. As of late, some of those players have been international, but Georgia athletes will always be the majority of our roster and important in the success of our team. Surrency is as experienced with the GSU men s soccer program as any person. He was an assistant for four years before he was promoted to head coach prior to the 2010 season by Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick. Brett is a very bright young coach who is well respected by the student-athletes and skilled in all aspects of coaching, recruiting and administration, Levick said, I was pleased to give him the opportunity to run the entire program. Surrency has been a member of the coaching staff since He spent one year as a graduate assistant prior to his four as an assistant coach, where he assisted in all aspects of the program. He has a United States Soccer Federation National B License and is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). He s worked with the Georgia Soccer Olympic Development program, leading the 1995 age group state team to the national championships this past March. Surrency has also worked with KYX out of Jacksonville, Fla., Forsyth Fusion Soccer Club and Atlanta Youth Soccer Association. Before joining GSU in 2005, Surrency spent the 2004 season as a student assistant coach at his alma mater, Jacksonville University. He held multiple responsibilities with the Dolphins team including daily training sessions, training non-traveling players and assisting with administrative work. Surrency was a four-time All-Atlantic Sun Academic All- Conference performer and a two-time All-Atlantic Sun Conference honoree at Jacksonville University. He earned Atlantic Sun first team honors in his senior year of 2003 and second team laurels as a sophomore in He was a four-year starter and three-year captain as a center back. He earned the Bill Coulthart Award as the Dolphins most valuable player in Surrency received the 2003 Douglas B. Milne Award recognizing excellent sportsmanship by the Jacksonville University athletic department, and was a NSCAA/Adidas 2003 College Men Scholar All-South Region team member. He was a four-time, all-area honoree at Buchholz High School in Gainesville, Fla. and received mention in Who s Who Among American High School Students. Surrency earned his bachelor s degree in sports administration from Jacksonville University in 2004 and added a master s degree in sports administration from Georgia State in He s volunteered with the Special Olympics, Soccer in the Streets, AfterSchool All-Stars, Boys and Girls Club and organized various clinics in the soccer community. It s exciting to be at Georgia State University and part of this athletics program at a time of such dynamic growth, Surrency said, The expectations at GSU have risen substantially and we look forward to meeting those expectations and seeing our goals come to fruition. Surrency s sister, Meagan, is in her third season as a women s soccer assistant coach at Southern Methodist University. She played soccer at Jacksonville from where she was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team each season, and helped the Dolphins reach the 2006 NCAA Tournament. Surrency was born Aug. 11, 1982 in Houston, Texas and is the son of Donald and Susan Surrency. 8 Game Recaps Georgia State 1 Lipscomb 0 2 Georgia State 0 #20 USF 1 Aug. 26, 2011 Nashville, Tenn. 4 p.m. ET Nashville, Tenn. - Freshman midfielder Jordan Weise scored a goal with 4:43 left to lead the Georgia State men s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Lipscomb Friday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn., in the season opener for both teams. The freshman from Lake Park, Ga., dashed from the left side across the box, corralled a loose ball sent in from the right and buried a right-footed strike after deking Lipscomb goalkeeper Brent McGee. Weise s goal highlighted a dominating effort from GSU (1-0-0), which outshot Lipscomb 10-2 for the match. I m excited because we showed the ability to create chances more so than we did last year, head coach Brett Surrency said after the win. Credit the guys for creating chances because they did a nice job of reading the way Lipscomb defended and adjusting our attack to that. Any Lipscomb threat that pierced the stout Panthers back line was answered by junior goalkeeper Vincent Foermer (1-0-0). Foermer made one save while the back line of Bo Stroup, Chris Locandro, Peter Vania and Michael Nwiloh bottlenecked the Bison (0-1-0) offense to earn the shutout victory. [Lipscomb striker] Garret Pettis will be one of the top strikers in the Atlantic Sun this year and I thought we did a great job keeping him off the board, Surrency said, I thought Vania and Locandro were very good; they are steady and get the job done. Georgia State pressured Lipscomb with vigor early. The Panthers also posted numerous quality scoring chances throughout that game that could have widened the margin of victory. One thing we have to get better at is finishing our chances, Surrency said, We had a lot of chances and we could have made the game a lot less dramatic had we put the ball in the net. But it s a win and we re happy to be 1-0. The Panthers improved their all-time mark over Lipscomb to 6-0 with the victory. The Panthers move on to face USF next Friday in Tampa, Fla. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 2, 2011 Tampa, Fla. 7:30 p.m. ET Tampa, Fla.-Georgia State conceded a goal midway through the first half and couldn t overcome the deficit on the road and fell 1-0 at No. 20 USF Friday night. GSU rebounded in the second half after falling behind in the first, ripping seven shots compared to two in the first half. Head coach Brett Surrency liked the way his team fought back in the second half, despite facing a road deficit in a tough environment. The second half was night and day from the first half, it was a positive that we didn t just throw it in, Surrency said, We regrouped at the half and played better in the second half. The next time we play against a top team in a great atmosphere, we ll know what we need to do. Surrency noted the one-goal loss taught the Panthers many lessons, including the mettle they will need once Colonial Athletic Association play begins late this month. There are some ranked teams in the CAA that we have to go to that have a great facility and a great atmosphere, Surrency said, We can take this experience and use that in the future. That was the goal to learn from these games as we play the top competition before conference play. Senior Ayokunle Lumpkin and freshman Jordan Weise each took two shots in the match to lead GSU. Each put one on goal. GSU goalkeeper Vincent Foermer made four stops but conceded the only goal of the match in the 24th minute to USF junior Sebastien Thuriere. Thuriere buried a shot after he collected a rebound off a shot from teammate Kyle Nicholls. Even though the Panthers allowed just one goal to a top team, Surrency said the Panthers weren t satisfied. We came to Tampa to win, Surrency said, Right now the guys are disappointed, and I m happy they re disappointed. I want them to absolutely hate losing and go into every game expecting to win no matter who we play. The Panthers next challenge is on Monday evening when they travel to Clinton, S.C. for a match against Presbyterian College. GSU is 2-2 all-time against the Blue Hose and shut them out 2-0 in last season s match in Panthersville. Presbyterian is another difficult match and another difficult place to play, Surrency said, They seem to have some extra juice when they re home, we have to match their work rate but it s an opportunity to get back in the win column. 85:17 - GSU - Weise, Jordan (Unassisted) GSU: 10 GSU: 1 Lipscomb: 2 Lipscomb: 4 GSU: 3 GSU: 9 Lipscomb: 4 Lipscomb: 8 24:36 - USF - Thuriere, Sebastian (Nicholls; Benestad) GSU: 9 GSU: 4 USF: 14 USF: 2 GSU: 3 GSU: 8 USF: 7 USF: 9

Game Recaps Georgia State 3 Presbyterian 0 4 Mercer 1 Georgia State 2 Sept. 5, 2011 Clinton, S.C. 5:30 p.m. ET Clinton, S.C.--Neither a slow start nor the Presbyterian College Blue Hose were going to deny the Georgia State men s soccer team from a convincing 3-0 victory on Monday night in Clinton, S.C. In a match that was delayed 30 minutes due to weather, the Panthers (2-1-0) again battled through an evenly-fought first half only to tack on goals late to secure the victory. Junior Peter Vania headed in the match s first goal in the 81st minute on a free kick taken by midfielder Eric Lawrence. The goal proved to be the game winner and is the defender s second such goal of his career. The goal was much needed, Eric played an unbelievable ball, and Pete went up and got his head on it, GSU head coach Brett Surrency said. We started off slow, but we fed off of Pete s goal and the game picked up after that. Vania s header sparked a scoring onslaught for the Panthers in the final 10 minutes as junior midfielder Yasser Majluf and sophomore forward Evan Scott each banged home unassisted goals in the waning minutes for their firsts of the season. Majluf avenged a shot in the 27th minute that rang the crossbar by deking past his defender and wiring a ball into the right side of the net. Scott opened his 2011 account after he scampered by a Presbyterian (0-3-0) defender and also deposited a shot into the right side of the net. The goal beat the final buzzer by 15 seconds and ensured GSU a return to the win column. We really came alive in the second half after a bit of a slow start, Surrency said, We had a lot of energy and passion in the second half. Presbyterian had to start pushing numbers up after the first goal and Yasser picked a great moment to push forward and Evan made a great play to beat his defender. Junior goalkeeper Vincent Foermer made four saves to earn his second shutout victory of the season. It was the Seevetal, Germany native s eighth career shutout as he leap-frogged former GSU goalkeeper J.B. Wood 03 to move into fifth place on GSU s career shutout list. The Panthers held slight advantages in shots and corner kicks by margins of and 7-6, respectively. The game was also a physical affair with the teams combining for 33 fouls in the match. Sept. 9, 2011 Atlanta, Ga. (Panthersville) 7:00 p.m. ET ATLANTA--Sophomore Stephen McGill sent an enthusiastic crowd at Panthersville home happy after he scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick with 5:18 remaining to give the Georgia State men s soccer team a 2-1 victory over Mercer Friday night. Senior Ayokunle Lumpkin headed home the equalizer in the 76th minute to knot the score at one. Junior Eric Lawrence sent in a cross that Lumpkin skied above a crowd to bang home. Less than 10 minutes later, McGill tried the same in the 85th minute, but was taken down in the box to force the free kick. Seeing the goalie leaning, McGill smacked the ball to the back of the net. I was watching the keeper, he started to go right early so I knew the whole other side was open, McGill said. The late game-winner capped a wild affair that lived up to GSU-Mercer battles of the past in intensity. A total of 29 fouls were called as the Panthers clawed their way back for the win. It was a battle; Mercer always plays very, very hard, GSU head coach Brett Surrency said, In the second half, the boys kept battling. As far as energy and soccer being played, I think it s the best we ve done all season. Mercer (1-2-1) sophomore Ehjayson Henry scored the match s first goal after freshman Carol-Oscar Andersson snuck a pass to him through the Panther defense. Henry deked by Panthers goalkeeper Vincent Foermer and buried a shot into the right side of the net. Foermer made two saves to earn the victory for GSU (3-1- 0). The Panthers outshot Mercer 14-7 and held an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks for the match. Georgia State now faces a quick turnaround with a road match at UAB on Sunday (7 p.m. EDT). 80:10 - GSU - Vania, Peter (Lawrence) 82:45 - GSU - Majluf, Yasser (Unassisted) 89:45 - GSU - Scott, Evan (Unassisted) GSU: 15 GSU: 4 PC: 13 PC: 4 GSU: 7 GSU: 18 PC: 6 PC: 15 36:55 - Mercer - Henry, Ehjayson (Andersson) 75:02 - GSU - Lumpkin, Ayokunle (Lawrence) 89:45 - GSU - McGill, Stephen (Penalty Kick) Mercer: 7 Mercer: 4 GSU: 14 GSU: 2 Mercer: 2 Mercer: 15 GSU: 11 GSU: 14

5 Georgia State 1 UAB 1 F/2 OT Sept. 11, 2011 Birmingham, Ala. 7:00 p.m. ET Birmingham, Ala.--Redshirt freshman goalkeeper C.J. Cochran made 10 saves in his first career start to help the Georgia State men s soccer team tie UAB 1-1 on Sunday night. Sophomore forward Evan Scott scored GSU s lone goal of the match at the 16-minute mark in the first half. The Panthers (3-1-1) responded after Blazers freshman Diego Navarrete buried a penalty kick to give UAB (3-0-2) the lead less than three minutes prior. Playing in place of injured starter Vincent Foermer, Cochran dueled UAB senior goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski, who made two saves in the match for a Blazers squad that received votes in the most recent NSCAA Coaches Top 25 Poll. The 10 saves were the most by a GSU goalkeeper since Foermer made 10 saves in a 0-0 tie at UNC Wilmington last season. C.J. was fantastic and kept us in the game, GSU head coach Brett Surrency said. It was really impressive, for his college debut he played absolutely unbelievable. The penalty kick provided early drama to a match that added plenty as it wore on. Cochran raced out and slid to cut down an attack but drew a yellow card for making contact with a UAB forward in the box. Blazers senior Chris Williams stepped up to take the shot, which Cochran stopped but the flag went up indicating he moved forward off the goal line before Williams took the shot. Navarrete stepped in and buried the chance into the upper-left corner to break the scoreless match. UAB played a lot of long crosses and balls the whole game, Cochran said, They wanted to flick it on and try and score from there, but Peter Vania and Chris Locandro did a great job in front of me. They had one good chance on the penalty kick and that one is my fault. Georgia State responded by ramping up its pressure. After a long stretch of offensive possession, sophomore Michael Nwiloh played a ball into the left side of the box that senior Ayokunle Lumpkin centered towards Scott. Scott directed the cross into the back of the net for his second goal of the season and the equalizer at 16:00. GSU was inches away from tacking on another goal just less than three minutes later. Freshman Bo Stroup lofted a corner kick from the right side that Scott put on net, but a UAB defender hugging the post blocked it and cleared the danger. The Panthers defense held firm in the early stages of the second half by fighting off several UAB attacks before they appeared to score the game winner in the dying seconds of the match. The goal was disallowed due to a foul as both teams had goals taken away in the match. Lumpkin narrowly missed the game winner in the first overtime when he rang the post with a shot. He collected a rebound off a shot by Scott and chipped the ball by a sliding Woszczynski that hit the post, rolled mere inches across the goal line and was cleared by the UAB defense. Surrency said, Every time we step on the field we expect to win, but to tie a team just outside the Top 25 is a good result. 13:40 - UAB - Navarrete, Diego (Penalty Kick) 16:00 - GSU - Scott, Evan (Lumpkin; Nwiloh) GSU: 8 GSU: 11 UAB: 20 UAB: 3 GSU: 7 GSU: 18 UAB: 11 UAB: Game Recaps 6 Florida Atlantic 0 Georgia State 3 Sept. 16, 2011 Atlanta, Ga. 4:00 p.m. ET ATLANTA--The Georgia State men s soccer team finished off its fourth-straight match without a loss in a dominating 3-0 victory over FAU Friday afternoon at Panthersville. Sophomore forward Evan Scott paced the Panthers (4-1-1) with a four-point game, including one goal and two assists. It was the first such match of his career and the first for a GSU player since junior Eric Lawrence accomplished the feat on Sept. 12 of last season. The Panthers received goals from junior Gimel Gordon, who opened his account for the season, and a late tally from freshman Jordan Weise. I think we came out more refined in the second half and the score reflected that, head coach Brett Surrency said. In the first half, I thought we could ve been a little bit sharper, but the second half I thought we did a much better job. The end score reflects what we put into the game in the second half. Redshirt freshman C.J. Cochran made three stops to record his second shutout in as many games. Georgia State s defense has now allowed just three goals in seven games to start the season. Gordon opened the scoring after Scott beat a defender oneon-one on the left side and rifled a shot off of FAU goalkeeper Jeremy Crumpton. Gordon calmly deposited the rebound into the back of the net. Scott followed his teammate just more than 10 minutes later when he took a crafty pass from sophomore Jamal Keene on the left side of the box and nailed a shot just inside the far post. Scott s goal gave GSU a 2-0 advantage at the 72:36 mark. It was great timing from Jamal playing a great through ball and I held my line onside, Scott said. Senior Ayokunle Lumpkin made an excellent individual effort to beat his defender down the right side and fired in a low cross to the feet of Scott in the middle. Scott tapped the ball on to Weise breaking in from the left side of the box who buried the chip shot for a 3-0 lead. Weise s second goal of the season capped the scoring with just less than 13 minutes remaining. The Panthers outshot FAU 21-7, including a 12-4 margin in the second half. FAU fell to with the loss. GSU has outscored its opponents 9-0 in the second half this season. Georgia State faces a quick turnaround for a second straight week as it hosts Florida International on Sunday at Noon. Sunday will also be Youth Soccer Day at the Panthersville Soccer Complex. 11 Game Recaps FIU 2 Georgia State 3 8 Georgia State 0 Delaware 1 Sept. 18, 2011 Atlanta, Ga. 12:00 p.m. ET ATLANTA--The Georgia State men s soccer team moved to 5-1-1, its best start since the 2003 season, with a thrilling 3-2 victory over FIU Sunday afternoon at Panthersville. Goals from sophomore Peter Vania, redshirt senior Ayokunle Lumpkin and the game winner from junior Yasser Majluf led the Panthers over FIU (3-3-2). Georgia State now hasn t dropped a decision in five-consecutive matches. Redshirt freshman C.J. Cochran made eight saves in his third straight start to earn the victory. The Panthers head into conference play after back-to-back wins this weekend. It was an exciting game, Georgia State head coach Brett Surrency said, Towards the end we could have done a better job managing the game, but that s something we get to work on this week heading into conference play. Georgia State begins Colonial Athletic Association play Saturday at Delaware (7 p.m.). We re confident and playing well going into conference play at now, Surrency said, But now is when it matters. It s nice to be 5-1-1, but you throw it out the window because everybody in the CAA is 0-0 in conference. We re excited. We circled the Delaware game on the calendar a long time ago. Vania opened the scoring after he corralled an attempted clear that ricocheted to his feet mere yards from the net. The defender, pinched in for a corner kick, drilled home the loose ball to give GSU the 1-0 lead just 4:42 into the match. Lumpkin added to the lead in the 50th minute after sophomore Evan Scott deked a defender on the right and centered him a ball. One-on-one with FIU goalkeeper Eric Reyes, Lumpkin chipped the ball into the left side of the net to add to GSU s lead. It was a great build up, the pressure was great, Lumpkin said, I passed it to Evan and he gave me a good ball back and I put it away. Less than six minutes after GSU conceded the first FIU score, Majluf took a through ball from sophomore Jamal Keene to the left just inside the 18-yard box. Majluf roofed a shot that beat Reyes short side just inside the post to put GSU back up by two. We all thought he was going to try and drive a cross to Evan, and instead he snuck it in near post, Surrency said, I think he caught the goalie a bit off guard. It was a great goal. FIU held a advantage in shots for the match. Freshman defender Arnthor Kristinsson scored in the 70th minute and Quentin Albrecht in the 85th minute, off an assist from Lucas Di Croce, for FIU. The Panthers have one remaining non-conference opponent in NC State on Sept. 27. GSU (5-2-1, 0-1) goalkeeper C.J. Cochran once again made several key stops throughout to keep the match scoreless until the waning minutes. His diving, finger tip save at the 3:29 mark helped fight away a golden chance for Delaware to take an early lead. The Panthers fought back in the second half after starting slow in the first. I thought we played a great second half, we created a lot of opportunities, GSU head coach Brett Surrency said. We had some chances and we just couldn t put them away. The Panthers also had chances to strike first in their Colonial Athletic Association opener, starting with junior Eric Lawrence ripping the match s first shot just 44 seconds in. Senior Ayokunle Lumpkin followed with GSU s first chance on net at the 2:55 mark. Lumpkin also missed a one-on-one opportunity when he couldn t chip a ball past Delaware goalkeeper Kris Devaux after he broke in on goal alone. Sophomore forward Roberto Gimenez broke through with the first goal of the match at the 88:03 mark. Delaware (6-0-1, 1-0) fought off a late corner kick from the Panthers in the 90th minute to seal the victory. Lumpkin put four shots on net as the Panthers ripped nine shots compared to Delaware s 14. The Blue Hens held a slight 7-6 lead in corner kicks. At the end of the day we traveled to Delaware to get a win, but I was pleased with the way we showed up in the second half, Surrency said. We created good chances and showed a lot of energy, those are the positives we can take away from this game. The Panthers travel to Raleigh, N.C. for their final non-conference match of the season against NC State on Tuesday. GSU is winless against the Wolfpack in two matches. NC State is a tough ACC opponent, Surrency said. It will be a good opportunity for us to get back as soon as possible after a tough loss on Saturday. We ll find a way to regroup and get back on the field and have a positive turnaround. 4:42 - DEL - Gimenez, Roberto (Nuel) GSU: 9 GSU: 5 Delaware: 14 Delaware: 3 GSU: 6 GSU: 20 Delaware: 7 Delaware: 10

Game Recaps Georgia State 1 NC State 0 Sept. 27, 2011 Raleigh, N.C. 7:00 p.m. ET Raleigh, N.C.-Sophomore midfielder Jamal Keene buried the match s lone goal in the 11th minute to lead the Georgia State men s soccer team to a 1-0 victory at NC State Tuesday night. The win was Georgia State s (6-2-1) first ever victory over NC State (3-4-2) in three tries and its first win over an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent since travelling to No. 6 Clemson and upsetting the Tigers 2-1 on Sept. 5, Keene, a sophomore transfer, scored his first goal in a GSU uniform and became the eighth player to score a goal for GSU this season. The ACC is the premier soccer league in the country, GSU head coach Brett Surrency said, To get a win against an ACC opponent for the first time in 10 years is fantastic. We knew the NC State game was going to be a big one for us and fortunately we were able to come out on top. Keene teamed with classmate Stephen McGill on a giveand-go from just outside the 18-yard box to spring the early chance for GSU. Keene buried the shot to put the Panthers up 1-0 at the 10:28-mark. It was just the third of GSU s 14 goals this season put away in the first half. It was also McGill s first assist as a member of the Panthers. Stephen and I sucked in the defense and it was a quick one-two touch back to me, Keene said, I took my opportunity and buried it. In a tight defensive battle, freshman CJ Cochran stood tall and made three saves in net to lead the defense to its fourth shutout this season and the second of his career. The Panthers withstood a flurry of shots just after Keene buried their goal in the first half. Cochran made two saves in just more than a minute beginning at the 28:37-mark to keep the Wolfpack scoreless. CJ got the shutout on his birthday, Surrency said, He made a few big saves and any time you come away with a clean sheet you have to be happy with that. The Wolfpack held the edge in shots (9-6) and corner kicks (6-4) for the match played at Dail Soccer Field. NC State, like Georgia State, was looking to rebound from a loss before conference play resumed this weekend. This was a big win, Keene added, It really shows that Georgia State is a good team and the CAA is a good conference and that we can hang with the teams from the bigger conferences. Georgia State returns to Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday when it hosts Hofstra. Also, GSU will hold Kicks for the Cure on Saturday to benefit The American Cancer Society s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. All fans are asked to wear pink for the match and the first 150 fans will receive a free pink t-shirt. Hofstra will be a great game and to get back home for the first conference game will be great for us, Surrency said, We re happy to play for such a great cause. It s encouraging to be able to hold the Kicks for the Cure event at home. 10 Hofstra 0 Georgia State 1 F/OT Oct. 1, 2011 Atlanta, Ga. 1:00 p.m. ET ATLANTA--Sophomore midfielder Stephen McGill buried a penalty kick in the 93rd minute to give the Georgia State men s soccer team a 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Hofstra Saturday afternoon at Panthersville. McGill scored his second game-winning, penalty kick goal of the season after redshirt senior Ayokunle Lumpkin was taken down in the box by Hofstra goalkeeper Roberto Pellegrini. Mc- Gill stepped in and roofed the shot past Pellegrini to give GSU (7-2-1, 1-1) its first conference win of the season. Ayokunle took a good touch and the keeper came out and took him out, McGill said, On the penalty kick, I saw a lot of wind and shot the ball with a lot of power and it worked out. The Panthers rushed the field and mobbed McGill after his bullet into the upper-left corner of the net capped a mostly onesided match that gave GSU an important first CAA victory. This win is huge, GSU head coach Brett Surrency said, It gets us back to.500 in the CAA. I m happy for the guys, they worked hard with two games in a row now with shutouts. Redshirt freshman CJ Cochran was once again stellar in net as he made one save in the victory. GSU earned a second straight shutout victory also behind deft defensive work from the midfield and defense. The Panthers teamed to hold Hofstra leading scorer Brett Carrington, often marked on the outside by the likes of sophomore Michael Nwiloh and freshman Bo Stroup, without a shot in the match. GSU held Hofstra (4-4, 1-1) to just four shots and no corners as opposed to 12 shots and seven corners for the Panthers. I thought we were the better team today, Surrency said, I thought we played the better soccer. Any win is a good win, but the ones that are at home, we have to take care of. The Panthers finally secured their first-ever victory over the Pride in this the eighth matchup. Several GSU chances went barely begging throughout the match as Hofstra s Pellegrini was peppered with shots all game. Pellegrini made five saves in the losing effort. GSU held Kicks for the Cure on Saturday at the Panthersville Soccer Complex as the players and coaches donned pink Panthers for a Cure t-shirts. Fans were also given the same pink t-shirts in support of The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. 13 Game Recaps #22 William & Mary 0 Georgia State 1 12 Georgia State 0 Northeastern 1 Oct. 5, 2011 Atlanta, Ga. 7:00 p.m. ET ATLANTA--Junior Gimel Gordon went on a mad dash down the right wing, then dashed away from his teammates as he celebrated his goal in the 80th minute that led GSU to a 1-0 victory over No. 22 William & Mary Wednesday night at Panthersville. This win is the first GSU victory over a ranked opponent since the Panthers surprised No. 6 Clemson 2-1 in 2001 and the first victory at home over a top 25-ranked opponent in school history. A win like this is huge for the program and really big for this season, GSU head coach Brett Surrency said. Gordon s goal, his second of the season, was a brilliant individual effort from the forward. He received a long pass before he shielded the ball, chipped it, then took off on a dead sprint down the right sideline. As he cut toward the middle and sped away from a defender, Gordon wired a shot inside the near post before his teammates cleared the nearby bench to celebrate the goal. He s been doing a really good job of getting into the spots, Surrency said of Gordon. We had a film session with him today and showed some clips from the past few games and what we wanted from him. Today was what we wanted from him. Gordon s game-clinching goal in the latter part of the second half capped a dominating effort from GSU (8-2-1, 2-1) as it outshot Colonial Athletic Association rival William & Mary 13-9 for the match and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. The defense once again paved the way to victory as Georgia State s defense allowed only one shot on goal, a relatively harmless drive from Tribe sophomore Ben Coffey in the 49th minute. GSU goalkeeper CJ Cochran, this week s CAA Rookie of the Week, stopped that one shot to earn the win while the Tribe s (6-4, 3-1) goalkeeper, Colin Smolinsky, made six stops in the loss. For GSU this was a third straight shutout win, its first such streak since the first three games of the 1987 season. Organizationally I thought we were pretty good today with Chris Locandro, Peter Vania, Michael Nwiloh and Bo Stroup spearheading it, Surrency said of his CAA-best defense. A lot of credit goes to the back line, they did a great job today. The six goals the Panthers have allowed this season is the least amount of goals allowed in the first 11 games of a season. The win also snapped a five-match losing streak for the Panthers against the Tribe in the CAA. For William & Mary, the Panthers ended the Tribe s streak of four straight shutout wins and stopped their streak of 445 minutes played without a goal allowed. GSU s triumph also broke a string of four shutout losses by the Panthers to the Tribe. The last time GSU scored a goal against the Tribe was in a 2-4 loss in 2006 and its only win came in 2005, GSU s first year in the CAA. Georgia State improved its unofficial record to 3-7 all-time against top 25-ranked opponents with the win. They are 1-1 this year with this win and a 1-0 loss to No. 20 USF. The Panthers travel to Boston, Mass. on Saturday to continue conference play against Northeastern (6 p.m.). 79:03 - GSU - Gordon, Gimel (Unassisted) W&M: 9 W&M: 7 GSU: 13 GSU: 1 W&M: 3 W&M: 11 GSU: 9 GSU: 10 Oct. 8, 2011 Boston, Mass. 6:00 p.m. ET Boston, Mass.--The Georgia State men s soccer team conceded its first goal in three matches and could not overcome the deficit in a 1-0 loss at Northeastern on Saturday night. The Panthers (8-3-1, 2-2) conceded at the 78:14-mark when Northeastern senior Ryan Burnham drilled a shot into the left side of the net off a corner kick. The ball deflected to him off a Panthers defender after the Northeastern corner kick before Burnham ended GSU s streak of 241 straight minutes without allowing a goal. We knew what to expect from Northeastern on their home field and that s exactly what we got, GSU head coach Brett Surrency said, We didn t play up to the high standards that we have this year. Credit Northeastern because they came out and played very well. Sophomore Stephen McGill nearly got his foot on a dangerous cross from junior Gimel Gordon that would ve knotted the game at one with less than three minutes left. But the Panthers couldn t capitalize on the chance and went goal-less for the first time in three matches. McGill was the Panthers leading shot taker on the day with five shots including one on goal. Sophomore forward Evan Scott and redshirt senior Ayokunle Lumpkin each had two shots in the match. Redshirt freshman CJ Cochran made four saves in the losing effort. Northeastern held a advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Northeastern ( ) has now won four consecutive matches at home against GSU and hasn t allowed a goal in those wins. Georgia State returns to Panthersville for a two-game home stand beginning this Wednesday. The Panthers will look to bounce back Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Colonial Athletic Association opponent UNC Wilmington. The fact is we have to bounce back, Surrency said, We knew that there were going to be ups and downs playing in this conference. The guys have it in them and they ll hold onto this tonight and be disappointed and tomorrow we ll turn our attention to UNC Wilmington. Visit early in the week for a preview of Wednesday s match. 78:14 - NU - Burnham, Ryan (Unassisted) GSU: 13 GSU: 4 NU: 15 NU: 4 GSU: 4 GSU: 17 NU: 6 NU: 6

Game Recaps UNC Wilmington 0 Georgia State 1 14 Drexel 2 Georgia State 4 Oct. 12, 2011 Atlanta, Ga. 6:00 p.m. ET ATLANTA--Redshirt sophomore Caleb Kernan scored his first goal of the season to lead the Georgia State men s soccer team to a 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over UNC Wilmington Wednesday night at Panthersville. Junior goalkeeper Vincent Foermer made his first start since Sept. 9 and had three saves to earn the victory. Kernan s goal came in the sixth minute and was his first in two years and two days after he missed all of last season due to injury. Freshman Bo Stroup sent in a cross from the right side that was flicked on by sophomore Stephen McGill before Kernan banged home the loose ball in front. Nice to score the first goal of the season, I ve definitely been trying, Kernan said, It s good to get that monkey off my shoulders. Kernan last scored a goal in a 3-1 win over Drexel on Oct. 10, It s great for Caleb, it s got to be a good feeling for him and now that he s got one I expect some more to come, GSU head coach Brett Surrency said of Kernan. The Panthers (9-3-1, 3-2) improved to 6-0 at home with the win over Colonial Athletic Association foe UNC Wilmington (3-9, 1-5) and notched their seventh shutout win of the season. The seven shutouts tie for the highest number in a season since the 2003 team achieved the same feat. GSU s nine wins is its most since 2004, when the Panthers also won nine. The guys maybe have a little extra at home, which is fine, Surrency said, Hopefully we can keep that going for the last two home games. Foermer, returning after he was injured in an airborne collision in a 2-1 win over Mercer, posted his third shutout of the season. It was the ninth of his career, moving him into a tie with Filipe Carvalho 08 for fourth all-time. The third shutout this season also broke a single-season best of two he set last year. Another solid day by the back line, the team defending as well and Vincent stepping back in, Surrency said, At the end of the day if we don t get scored on, we don t lose. We ll keep that defensive mentality moving forward. Georgia State is now in a three-way tie for fourth place in the CAA with VCU and Northeastern. Next up for the Panthers is a match against Drexel at 3 p.m. this Sunday at Panthersville. Close, exciting matches are a theme in the CAA this season and with GSU in recent history. The Panthers haven t won a CAA match by more than a one-goal margin since a 2-0 victory over Northeastern on Oct. 10, Everyone seems to be taking care of their business at home in the CAA, Surrency said, Hopefully the experience tonight will help us prepare for the game. We re always excited to play at home. Check for a preview of Sunday s game. Check back on Sunday for links to live stats and a recap with a box score following the important CAA match. 5:27 - GSU - Kernan, Caleb (McGill; Stroup) Oct. 16, 2011 Atlanta, Ga. 3:00 p.m. ET ATLANTA--Sophomore Evan Scott s second-half hat trick led the Georgia State men s soccer team to a 4-2 victory over Drexel on Sunday at Panthersville. Senior Ayokunle Lumpkin scored the game s first goal just 2:33 into the match for the Panthers (10-3-1, 4-2) quickest strike of the season so far. He took an outstanding back post feed from Jamal Keene who was standing just beyond the left corner of the box. Sophomore Caleb Kernan narrowly missed getting his head on the ball but Lumpkin, who was all alone in front, buried the cross for his third goal of the season. Scott s three goals each came within a 24-minute stretch in the second half. It s the first hat trick from a Georgia State player since Oct. 18, 1997 when Brian Boerstler fired in three goals in a 4-3 victory for GSU over Campbell. GSU has now separated itself from a crowded pack of Colonial Athletic Association teams and sits alone in fourth place in the conference standings at 4-2. The Panthers prepare for a big week as they travel to No. 17 Old Dominion and host James Madison, two of the three teams tied for first in the CAA. That s huge for our team right now especially because we have a young team, to continue into conference play in fourth place is a great feeling especially with five games left, Lumpkin said. Scott ran off the bench in the 71st minute for a substitution just prior to a Georgia State corner kick. After the attempt was cleared, freshman Bo Stroup sent in a long cross from the right side that met Scott s head near the far post. Scott buried the ball and knotted the game at two goals apiece. It was Stroup s second assist in as many games. Scott s second score came off a nearly identical feed, this time from junior Eric Lawrence. Scott headed home his second of the game to put GSU up 3-2 with just less than six minutes remaining. He completed the hat trick less than 20 seconds later when junior Gimel Gordon made a fantastic individual effort to spring free and played a ball through the middle of the Drexel defense to Scott. The sophomore found the ball and buried it with his left foot for his second goal in the 20-second span and third of the game. His hat trick was fantastic, the game is a lot easier when you have a guy putting the ball in the back of the net, Surrency said, If we can get one guy or a collection of guys to put the ball in the back of the net it s going to make us a dangerous team. Junior goalkeeper Vincent Foermer made two saves to earn the victory over the Dragons (3-8-2, 2-3-1). Foermer improved to 5-1 on the year with the victory. The 10 wins are the most GSU has had since 2000 when the Panthers coached by Kerem Daser went 12-9 and won the Trans America Athletic Conference championship. 15 Drexel 2 Georgia State 4 Oct. 16, 2011 Atlanta, Ga. 3:00 p.m. ET It was a come-from-behind victory for GSU as it fought back after the un-phased Drexel calmly scored two goals to answer Lumpkin s first tally. The Dragons answered the first goal just more than three minutes later when sophomore Ken Tribbett got his head on a free kick from junior Brandon Zeller and found the back of the net in the sixth minute. The Dragons held GSU scoreless the rest of the first half, but almost conceded a 38th- minute goal when Lumpkin s diving attempt at a header missed by inches. The Dragons broke out of halftime and applied steady pressure on the Panthers. It wasn t long before junior Malcolm LeBourne took a pass and dribbled from the left wing to the top of the box and rifled a low shot inside the left post past a diving Foermer to give Drexel a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute. The Panthers weathered a few more chances before the offensive attack clicked to which Scott added his scoring touch. The way we finished the game, scoring those three goals late, that s something we can hang our hat on moving forward, Surrency said, Hopefully the guys see that and see what it s going to take to win games. The Panthers held a slight 10-9 advantage in shots and the two goals Georgia State conceded tied a season high for goals allowed. GSU only allowed two goals once before in a 3-2 win over FIU on Sept. 18. Georgia State s week ahead will go a long way in determining the final standings in the CAA. GSU travels to Norfolk, Va., to face No. 17 Old Dominion on Wednesday (7 p.m.) before hosting James Madison (2 p.m.), who is receiving votes for the top 25, this Sunday. The two teams are tied for the lead in the CAA standings. All the CAA games are huge, we don t take any of them for granted, Surrency said, With where the standings are, it makes it even bigger. The CAA is a brutal conference, and we have to be ready every single game. Visit prior to both matches for previews, statistics and all news concerning Georgia State men s soccer. Sophomore Stephen McGill scored GSU s first goal in the 87th minute after being awarded a penalty kick. McGill fired the ball into the upper-right part of the net for his third goal of the season, all on penalty kicks. GSU (10-4-1, 4-3) hasn t scored three penalty kick goals in a season since Paul Schwak did in Redshirt senior Ayokunle Lumpkin knotted the game at two after sophomore Michael Nwiloh threw in a ball from the right side that was flicked on by McGill. Lumpkin met the ball with his head and directed it into the right side of the net to tie the game in the 89th minute. ODU (10-2, 6-1) sophomore Tim Hopkinson scored the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute after classmate Gideon Asante centered a ball that nearly went out for a goal kick. Asante saved it off the line and Hopkinson buried it past a diving Foermer for the victory. I m really proud of that the way we fought at the end of regulation, head coach Brett Surrency said, It s a tough loss but we can take a positive from it with the effort at the end of the game. Georgia State now sits in a tie with VCU and Delaware for fifth place in the CAA standings after the Rams and Blue Hens each recorded wins Wednesday night. The Panthers return home for senior day this Sunday to take on James Madison (2 p.m.), who beat William & Mary 1-0 on Wednesday night and are tied with Old Dominion for first in the CAA. Junior Vincent Foermer made seven saves, several of the diving variety, in the losing effort. He made some good saves, Surrency said, He s a good keeper and when he s called upon to make saves, it s almost assumed that he ll make them because he s that good. Georgia State started strong in the match with Lumpkin putting the first shot of the match on net. GSU controlled possession for a majority of the first 10 minutes, but the Monarchs turned up the pressure from that point on. The Panthers conceded a goal in the 30th minute when the nation s second-leading scorer junior Yannick Smith struck on a feed from freshman forward Ivan Militar. The Monarchs preserved the 1-0 lead into halftime. Asante added to the lead when he took a long clear from junior Alex De John and beat Foermer one-on-one in the 79th minute. 16 Game Recaps James Madison 1 Georgia State 0 16 Georgia State 2 George Mason 0 Oct. 23, 2011 Atlanta, Ga. 2:00 p.m. ET ATLANTA--The Georgia State men s soccer team dropped its final home match of the season by a 1-0 score to James Madison on Sunday at Panthersville. It was the first loss at home for the Panthers (10-5-1, 4-4) this season. GSU is 7-1 at Panthersville and is now tied with VCU for sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association standings with three road matches remaining. The Panthers and Rams face off on Wednesday, Nov. 2 in Richmond, Va. JMU (11-2-1, 7-1) senior midfielder Jimmy Simpson headed home the game s only goal off a cross from freshman Jamal Umar in the 69th minute. Umar sent in a high cross from the left that Simpson skied and headed into the right side of the net past a diving Vincent Foermer. GSU s junior goalkeeper Foermer made one save in the match while JMU s senior goalkeeper Justin Epperson made five stops for the shutout. The Dukes remain in a tie with No. 11-ranked Old Dominion atop the CAA standings. The Panthers outshot the Dukes for the match, but couldn t put one past Epperson. Redshirt senior Ayokunle Lumpkin and sophomore Evan Scott each had game-tying goals fall just wide of the goal mouth in the second half. It s the first time all season that GSU has lost two consecutive matches after a 3-2 loss in overtime on Wednesday at ODU. The Panthers honored four seniors prior to the match in Lumpkin, forward Jacob Hamilton, midfielder Tim Nixon and defender Christopher Peacos as part of Senior Day ceremony at Panthersville. Head coach Brett Surrency leads GSU into Fairfax, Va., for a 3 p.m. match against George Mason next Saturday. The matchup between the Patriots (6-6-3, 3-4-1) and Panthers pits two teams within two points of each other that are fighting for one of the final six spots in the CAA Tournament. Check for a preview of next Saturday s match. Also check the schedule page for a link to live stats from Fairfax, Va. 68:15 - JMU - Simpson, Jimmy (Umar) Oct. 29, 2011 Fairfax, Va. 3:00 p.m. ET Fairfax, Va.--On a rain and snow-soaked field, the Georgia State men s soccer team earned an important 2-0 win at Colonial Athletic Association foe George Mason on Saturday. The Panthers (11-5-1, 5-4) now sit in sixth place alone in the CAA standings pending the result of the VCU-Towson match on Sunday. The 11 wins are the most since the 2000 season for Georgia State when the team went 12-9 and won the Trans America Athletic Conference championship. This win was also the team s eighth shutout victory of the season, the most in one season since the 1983 team posted nine shutouts. Freshman Jordan Weise buried his own rebound to score the game s opening tally in the 39th minute after he took a pass from junior midfielder Alex Vivanco. It was the freshman s third goal of the season and occurred after Georgia State cleared a Mason (7-7-3, 4-5-1) corner kick at 38:38 that led to a transition opportunity for Weise and Vivanco. Vivanco sealed the victory with a beautiful unassisted score in the 60th minute, his first goal of the season. After Georgia State gained possession on an attempted through ball, Vivanco corralled junior midfielder Eric Lawrence s long clear on the right wing. Vivanco made a beautiful move to cut inside on his defender and snuck the ball past the charging goalkeeper to give GSU a 2-0 lead at 59:17. It was the midfielder s first goal since netting one in GSU s regular-season finale last year vs. Towson and the first three-point game of his career. It was a great long ball by Eric Lawrence and a great individual effort from Alex, head coach Brett Surrency said of the junior s goal. He just split the defenders and put a nice ball on goal. The weather was awful and I just wanted to free myself and try to score, Vivanco said, The defender stepped and I saw a chance to knock it around him and run and I got the ball past the keeper when he came out. Georgia State battled through steady showers in the first half in Fairfax, Va., before the rain eventually turned into a steady snow just before halftime. The snow continued through the second half and formed a white layer on the field at the George Mason Stadium that affected play in the second half. Given the weather, it took away from what we like to do, Surrency said, We played a little more of a defensive game today and didn t take a whole lot of chances. We just made sure to take advantage of the few opportunities we had. GSU goalkeeper Vincent Foermer starred in net and finished with seven saves, including several diving stops in the second half, to earn the win. The junior moved into fifth place alone on GSU s career saves list with 191, passing former Panther J.B. Wood, 03. 17 2011 Game Recaps Georgia State 2 George Mason 0 17 Georgia State 1 VCU 0 Oct. 29, 2011 Fairfax, Va. 3:00 p.m. ET the year, Surrency said, He made some absolutely huge saves. George Mason had very good opportunities and he made some world-class saves. Just before Vivanco s goal, Foermer made a diving save to preserve the one-goal lead on a shot from George Mason s Ryan Gracia at 53:11. Foermer got a piece of the ball before it hit the crossbar. After the Vivanco goal put the Panthers up two, Foermer stopped Mason forward Hugh Roberts after the forward broke in and had a clean look on net. Foermer dove to his right to stop the chance. He made one more outstanding save, this time diving to his left to stop a shot by Patriots midfielder Leo Stoltz. Stoltz, a native of Foermer s home country of Germany, rifled a high shoot on goal at the 79:03 mark that the goalkeeper fought off. With only two matches remaining in regular season, GSU plays at VCU in its next match on Wednesday (7 p.m.) with CAA Tournament spots on the line. The Rams could possibly tie GSU and William & Mary in the CAA standings with a win on Saturday. Check early next week for a preview of Wednesday s match at VCU. 38:57 - GSU - Weise, Jordan (Vivanco) 59:17 - GSU - Vivanco, Alex (Unassisted) Nov. 2, 2011 Richmond, Va. 7:00 p.m. ET Richmond, Va.--The Georgia State men s soccer team clinched its first-ever trip to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament with a 1-0 victory at VCU on Wednesday night. It s the first trip to the post season for the GSU men s soccer program since the 2004 season and the first time it qualified for the CAA Tournament since it joined the conference in It s part of a remarkable turnaround for Georgia State men s soccer (12-5-1, 6-4) under head coach Brett Surrency as the Panthers are two years removed from a four-win season. It s an unbelievable feeling to get to the CAA Tournament, Surrency said, It has been our goal all year to get there and the fact that we were able to do it this year makes me so proud and so happy for the guys. It s a big, big thing for our growing program. The CAA is one of the top three conferences in the nation this year. Nine of the CAA schools are ranked in the top 90 RPI by the NCAA (only the Big East with 10 of its 16 schools has more). Two CAA schools are in the Top 25 NSCAA poll. Sophomore forward Evan Scott of Columbus, Ga., headed in the game s lone goal off a corner kick from freshman Jordan Weise. Sophomore midfielder Jamal Keene forced the corner kick after he laced a shot from distance that forced VCU goalkeeper Josh Pantazelos to make a diving stop to his left. Scott skied above the VCU defense on the perfectly-placed boot from Weise and directed it into the top left corner of the net at the 43:04 mark. We had multiple corners back-to-back and Jordan went up to take the kick and I was unmarked, Scott said, I told Pete [Vania] to take his man out of my space and Jordan delivered the ball and I got my head on it. It was a great ball off the corner kick, Surrency said, Evan did what Evan does basically; He out-jumped everybody and got his head on the ball. He is getting a reputation for being very good in the air. GSU nursed the 1-0 lead for the rest of the match playing a man up after VCU s Nate Shiffman received a red card at the 26:20 mark. Junior goalkeeper Vincent Foermer made three saves and wasn t tested very often thanks to stellar play from GSU s defense. The effort from Foermer as well as his back line of sophomores Michael Nwiloh, Peter Vania, Chris Locandro and freshman Bo Stroup gave GSU its ninth shutout of the season which ties a school record set in Hats off to VCU, they fought hard while being down a man, Surrency said, They worked their tails off and I thought they had the better second half. We have to do a better job managing our emotions but we did enough to win the game and that s all that matters. GSU last beat VCU in The 12 wins this season tie for the best in a season since That squad coached by Kerem Daser went 12-9 and won the Trans America Athletic Conference Championship. It s an amazing feeling, Scott said on qualifying for the CAA Tournament, For me to get in it during the early part of my college career is amazing. I know for the seniors, it feels good for them because they ve never been there. Georgia State currently sits in a tie for fifth place in the CAA but owns the tiebreaker against William & Mary after a win over the Tribe on Oct. 5. The highest the Panthers could advance in the CAA standings would be third by season s end. This would occur if the Panthers win at Towson on Saturday and receive help in the form of a William & Mary win over Northeastern and a VCU win over Delaware. The Panthers wrap up their regular season at Towson this Saturday (1 p.m.). 19 Game Recaps #6 Georgia State 2 #3 William & Mary 1 Nov. 10, 2011 Harrisonburg, Va. 5:00 p.m. ET Harrisonburg, Va.-In its first Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, the Georgia State men s soccer team battled back from a second-half deficit and upset the No. 3 seed William & Mary, 2-1, on Thursday night at the JMU Soccer Complex. The poised Panthers (13-6-1) received two clutch goals from sophomores Stephen McGill and Evan Scott in the second half to earn the first CAA Tournament win in school history. It s also the first postseason win for the Panthers since Head coach Brett Surrency and GSU advance to face the No. 18-ranked team in the nation, and the second seed in the CAA Tournament, Old Dominion (11-4-1) on Friday (5 p.m.). I credit the guys, going down a goal didn t really faze the guys, Surrency said, The boys battled back and got two goals and here we stand. McGill started the comeback after he took a touch and deked around a defender from just inside 40 yards away from the net. The sophomore reared back and smashed a right-footed strike from a slight angle from 30 yards out that found the back of the net past diving goalkeeper Colin Smolinsky. McGill s drive in the 65th minute just inside the left post knotted the game at one goal apiece. Eric [Lawrence] made a heads up play and I passed the defender and I figured I would give it a go and was fortunate enough to have it go in, McGill said, I think it picked everybody s heads up and gave us the extra momentum to go and get the winner from there. GSU s intensity immediately jumped up after McGill s rocket found the net. Sophomore Michael Nwiloh nearly gave the Panthers the lead, but Smolinsky made a timely challenge to ward off the dangerous attack in the 67th minute. Nearly 10 minutes later, the Panthers earned a corner and freshman Bo Stroup delivered a perfect ball from the left flag towards the opposite post. Scott took to the air seeking yet another header goal off a corner kick. He found Stroup s cross and labeled it for the net at the 76:24 mark and GSU had the lead at 2-1 over the Tribe (10-9, 7-4). It was Scott s ninth goal of the season, but one of the only ones not to be followed by his patented backflip celebration. The sophomore later cited chilly temperatures (Mid-40 s at game time) and a hard surface for not risking his trademark celebration. On every corner kick I want the ball and I just jumped and headed in the ball, Scott said. As expected, the game was airtight on defense in the first half of a matchup that featured the top two defensive teams in the CAA. GSU and William & Mary, No. 29 in NCAA RPI rankings, traded chances as McGill and freshman Jordan Weise each had good opportunities denied in the first half. GSU goalkeeper Vincent Foermer was once again solid in net for GSU. The junior stopped two shots and cleared several other dangerous passes to earn the victory. Foermer came within inches of stopping the penalty kick goal off the foot of William & Mary senior Nicolas Abrigo in the 50th minute. The Seevetal, Germany native guessed correctly and dove to his right, getting a good piece of the ball but not enough to completely stop it. The goalkeeper smacked the grass in frustration after conceding the goal, but the Panthers weren t discouraged for long after. I thought our guys were up for the challenge. Beating [William & Mary] earlier in the year meant we did have confidence coming into the game and I think that showed, Surrency said, For the majority of the game we played some really nice soccer and we were unfortunate to go down a goal, but as I said before the guys rallied around it. The Panthers now look to avenge a regular-season loss to Old Dominion in a semifinal matchup tomorrow. Georgia State fell 3-2 in overtime after scoring two goals in the final three minutes to rally and tie the game in Norfolk, Va. After notching its first-ever tournament victory, the Panthers are anything but content heading into tomorrow s matchup. I think the win was huge, McGill said, Obviously our goal was to make the conference tournament. We check that off and we want to keep going as far as we can, but we re also hoping to get into the NCAA Tournament and seeing where we can go there. We have a really tough game against Old Dominion tomorrow night, Surrency said, They ll be a little bit fresher than we will, but we ll find a way and be ready to play. 20 Game Recaps #6 Georgia State 3 #2 Old Dominion 5 Nov. 11, 2011 Harrisonburg, Va. 5:00 p.m. ET Harrisonburg, Va.--The Georgia State men s soccer team s quest for a CAA title came to an end on Friday night in a 5-3 loss to No. 18 Old Dominion in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals. The Panthers (13-7-2, 6-5), led by head coach Brett Surrency, now await the NCAA Selection Show on Monday at 4:30 p.m. and a possible at-large bid to the tournament. GSU was the No. 40 team in the RPI earlier this week and since defeated the No. 29 team in William & Mary 2-1 on Thursday night. In their second game in less than 24 hours, the Panthers came back from a two-goal deficit in the second half, but it wasn t enough vs. Old Dominion (12-4-1, 7-3-1). Junior Gimel Gordon scored a goal in the 37th minute and assisted on senior Ayokunle Lumpkin s goal in the 62nd minute that tied the game at two. The Panthers conceded two more goals before defender Peter Vania headed home a corner kick from freshman Jordan Weise in the 87th minute that brought the Panthers within a goal with three minutes to go. Old Dominion answered with a goal in the final minute at the 89:15 mark to seal the victory and end GSU s CAA Tournament run. This was Georgia State s first CAA Tournament in school history and the first time it notched a postseason victory since The Panthers are two years removed from a fourwin season and have now posted 20 wins combined in backto-back seasons. The Panthers were picked to finish 12th in the 12-team CAA in the preseason poll prior to the 2011 season. Besides a 1-0 loss at Towson at the tail end of a three-game road trip to end the regular season, GSU has only lost to teams inside the top 60 in RPI in the latest rankings. Georgia State is No. 8 in the Nov. 8 NSCAA South Atlantic Region poll. GSU defeated the No. 7 team in that poll, William & Mary. The Panthers fell behind early tonight after junior defender Alex De John headed in a corner kick off the foot of sophomore forward Tim Hopkinson. Hopkinson later added an unassisted goal at the 35:19-mark to give Old Dominion a 2-0 lead. Junior Alex Vivanco made an outstanding individual play to spin off his defender on the left side and fire a pass across the box to the feet of Gordon. Gordon collected the ball and fired it into the net to bring GSU within one in the 38th minute. The game went to halftime with Georgia State trailing 18:45 - ODU - De John, Alex (Hopkinson) 35:19 - ODU - Hopkinson, Tim (Unassisted) 37:30 - GSU - Gimel Gordon (Vivanco) 61:42 - GSU - Lumpkin, Ayokunle (Gordon; Majluf) 74:55 - ODU - Hopkinson, Tim (Vaughan) 78:38 - ODU - LeBlanc, Jordan (Penalty Kick) 86:49 - GSU - Vania, Peter (Weise) 89:15 - ODU - Asante, Gideon (Unassisted) 2-1 before Lumpkin redirected a low cross from Gordon past ODU goalkeeper Victor Francoz. The play started when junior midfielder Yasser Majluf deked an ODU midfielder in his own end and fed Gordon on the wing. Gordon flicked a ball past a defender on the right side and evaded a slide tackle before slicing in a low cross to a wide-open Lumpkin on the doorstep. Hopkinson added his second of the game in the 75th minute when he collected an Alex Vaughan shot that rebounded to his feet off a GSU defender. ODU junior midfielder Jordan LeBlanc then converted on a penalty kick awarded to him after a hand ball in the box was called on GSU. Vania s header goal in the 87th minute avenged a narrowlymissed opportunity on a nearly identical play earlier that hit the crossbar. Weise delivered the ball and Vania skied to finish the chance. Old Dominion outshot Georgia State 21-7 for the match and held a 8-6 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Vincent Foermer made five stops in the losing effort.
