5 Los Angeles Kings Preseason Notes ROSTER TRIMMED TO 36: The Kings on Monday assigned the following players to Manchester (AHL): Center Justin Azevedo, defenseman Drew Bagnall, goaltender Jonathan Bernier, defenseman Andrew Campbell, defenseman Paul Crosty, right-winger Vladimir Dravecky, center Gabe Gauthier, left-winger Bud Holloway, defenseman Josh Kidd, center Trevor Lewis, left-winger Brady Murray, center Marty Murray, rightwinger, Scott Parse, goaltender Daniel Taylor, defenseman Eric Werner and goaltender Jeff Zatkoff. The Kings also returned defenseman Mike D Orazio to Owen Sound (OHL). That leaves the active training camp roster at 36 players. THE GOAL: CONTENDING LONG-TERM Strengthening the reserve list and building a core roster that gets progressively younger from year to year were at the top of the Things To Do list when Dean Lombardi joined the Kings as President/General Manager in April of Now entering his third season on the job, the foundation is continuing to be put in place for the Kings to contend long-term thanks to a commitment to building from the back-out, and a completely revamped scouting system and development process. SCOUTING: BUILDING FROM WITHIN Mark Yannetti and Michael Futa serve as Co-Directors of Amateur Scouting for the Kings, and they lead a group of eight amateur scouts who spend numerous hours traveling the world each season in search of young players who have both the character and the talent to someday develop into core members of the Kings. The Kings entered the 2008 NHL Entry Draft with a league-high 15 selections over seven rounds. The Kings turned quantity into quality prospects by first selecting defenseman Drew Doughty, the top defenseman at the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championships for the Gold Medal-winning Team Canada, with the second overall pick in the first round. Next, they engineered three separate trades that resulted in the Kings acquiring the 13th overall pick which they used to select defenseman Colten Teubert, an alternate captain for the gold medal-winning Team Canada at the 2008 IIHF Under-18 World Championships. The Kings continued to use their selections as valuable assets by selecting another seven players in the final six rounds of the draft before making three late round trades that resulted in more selections for what s expected to be a deep and talented 2009 NHL Entry Draft (the Kings currently have 12 selections in 2009). PLAYER DEVELOPMENT: TURNING PROSPECTS INTO PROS For the first time in the history of the franchise, the Kings now have staff members completely dedicated to Player Development. The staff features Nelson Emerson, the club s Coordinator of Player Development and Systems Integration; Mike O Connell, who oversees Pro Development and Special Assignments; and Kim Dillabaugh, who oversees Goaltender Development. All three are entrusted with helping to turn prospects into players once drafted into the system. By dedicating key resources to development, the Kings are integrating a system that will allow top prospects like Doughty, Teubert and fellow defenseman Thomas Hickey (4th overall in the 2007 draft) to grow into core, homegrown players like Dustin Brown (13th overall in the 2003 draft), Anze Kopitar (11th overall in the 2005 draft) and Alexander Frolov (20th overall in the 2000 draft). AGE DISTRIBUTION: GETTING BETTER WHILE GETTING YOUNGER To contend long-term, the Kings will need to increase their level of talent on the reserve list while at the same time getting progressively younger from season to season. For example, one can look at the June 29 trade that sent 32-year-old defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky to Edmonton in exchange for 26-yearold Jarret Stoll and 25-year-old defenseman Matt Greene. Stoll is a good fit because he can fill the hole the Kings have as a second-line center and Greene has the ability to be a top-four defenseman with the Kings. Both also are young enough to fit with the rest of the Kings young core. Of the 61 players starting training camp with the Kings 49 were 25-or-younger (Average age of all 61 players is about 23 years old).

6 AGE DISTRIBUTION AT START OF TRAINING CAMP: Mike D'Orazio Bryan Cameron Justin Azevedo Marc-Andre Cliche Drew Doughty Matt Fillier Jonathan Bernier Richard Clune Martin Jones Thomas Hickey Andrew Campbell Jack Johnson Andrei Loktionov Trevor Kidd Bud Holloway Anze Kopitar Colten Teubert Dwight King Wayne Simmonds Olivier Legault Viatcheslav Voynov Linden Rowat Trevor Lewis Geordie Wudrick Oscar Moller Alec Martinez David Meckler Jeff Zatkoff Jonathan Quick Brian Boyle Drew Bagnall Paul Crosty Daniel Taylor Dustin Brown Gabe Gauthier Matt Greene Vladimir Dravecky Matt Moulson Peter Harrold Davis Drewiske Brady Murray Eric Werner Patrick O'Sullivan* Scott Parse Jon Zeiler Teddy Purcell Joe Piskula Brad Richardson Kevin Westgarth *Unsigned restricted free agent (as of Sept. 22) HOMEGROWN KINGS Eleven former first round selections are scheduled to attend the Kings 2008 Training Camp, and nine of them are homegrown Kings. The list of homegrown Kings includes core players like Anze Kopitar (2005, 11th overall), Dustin Brown (2003, 13th overall) and Alexander Frolov (2000, 20th overall), as well as top prospects like Drew Doughty (2008, 2nd overall), Colten Teubert (2008, 13th overall), Thomas Hickey (2007, 4th overall), Jonathan Bernier (2006, 11th overall), Trevor Lewis (2006, 17th overall) and Brian Boyle (2003, 26th overall). Rounding out the first rounders are Jack Johnson (2005, 3rd overall) and Denis Gauthier (1995, 20th overall). BUILDING FROM THE NET OUT Lombardi, a strong proponent of building a team from the net out, enters the new season with three goaltenders in the Kings system that the club one day can develop into core players at the NHL level. The list includes Jonathan Bernier, Jonathan Quick and Jeff Zatkoff. Bernier, 20, was selected by the Kings in the first round in 2006 (11th overall). He opened the season with the Kings in London and recorded his first career NHL win vs. Anaheim. He appeared in a total of four games with the Kings before being re-assigned to Lewiston in the QMHL where he backstopped his team with a record of in 34 appearances while finishing second among Q netminders with a 2.73 GAA. Bernier also earned a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championships and he finished his campaign with the Manchester Monarchs once Lewiston was eliminated from the QMJHL postseason. While in Manchester, he appeared in a total of six games (including three playoff games) posting an impressive 1.63 GAA and.946 save-percentage in the three regular season contests. Quick, 22, selected by the Kings in the third round in 2005 (72nd overall), also earned his first career NHL win with the Kings vs. Buffalo at STAPLES Center on December 6, 2007 (8-2 victory). He finished the season with a record in three appearances with the Kings. He also went with three shutouts, a 2.32 goals-against-average and a.922 save-percentage in 19 games with Manchester, with many of his wins coming during the Monarchs late season playoff push that resulted in a seventh consecutive Calder Cup playoff berth for the club. Zatkoff, 21, selected in the third round in 2006 (74th overall) recently signed a multi-year contract with the Kings after finishing his junior season with Miami University (Ohio) where he finished second in the nation in both goals-against-average (1.72) and save-percentage (.933). He also finished second in the nation with 27 wins while going with three shutouts in 36 games played. Zatkoff, who competed with Team USA at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championships, finished with 55 career wins in three seasons at Miami University.

7 DEVELOPMENT CAMP REVIEW The Kings opened their annual Development Camp at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo on July 8. Nearly 40 prospects participated in the annual camp that included position-by-position on-ice workouts in the mornings followed by combined group workouts in the afternoons. The highlight of Development was the scrimmage that took place on July 14 and was broadcast live at LAKings.com. The goaltenders stole the show in the scrimmage as Jonathan Bernier, Jonathan Quick, Jeff Zatkoff, Daniel Taylor and Linden Rowat only allowed one total goal in the two 25-minute games played before a standing room only crowd. ROOKIE CAMP REVIEW The Kings kicked off their annual Rookie Camp with 29 prospects reporting to the Toyota Sports Center for a practice followed by a scrimmage on Saturday, Sep. 13. The rookies practiced and/or scrimmaged at TSC from September before leaving for Phoenix for a pair of rookie games against the Coyotes on Sept at Jobing.com Arena. The first game on Sept. 16 was also broadcast live at LAKings.com. The Kings won the first game of the tournament 2-1, before dropping the second game 3-0. Wayne Simmonds and Oscar Moller each had a goal and an assist in the tournament, while Jonathan Bernier stopped all 17 shots he faced in Game 1. REGULAR SEASON STARTS OCT. 11 IN SAN JOSE The Kings open the regular season in San Jose Saturday, Oct. 11. The Home Opener and beginning of a four-game homestand follows the next night Sunday, Oct. 12 vs. San Jose. Los Angeles will play 14 of its first 19 games at STAPLES Center.
