3 sabresgamenight Rick Jeanneret With his vast knowledge of the game and his unwavering enthusiasm for hockey, Rick Jeanneret s distinct voice has been synonymous with the Buffalo Sabres for over four decades. Jeanneret s career officially began in 1963, when he filled in for the regular announcer at a Niagara Falls Flyers game. He went on to become the color analyst for one season before moving to the play-by-play position in Jeanneret began his prolific career with the Sabres in the season as the club s radio play-by-play announcer and served primarily in that role until 1995, when he would also begin calling the action for the team s televised games. He would later become the longest-tenured play-by-play announcer in NHL history and his memorable calls became forever linked with Sabres history for generations of fans. Dale Hawerchuk Dale Hawerchuk was traded to the Sabres during the 199 NHL Entry Draft and would become one of the most productive players in team history, eventually being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1. During his five seasons with the franchise, Hawerchuk averaged over a point per game and led the Sabres in scoring for three seasons. Hawerchuk also led the team in assists in for two seasons and holds the number two and number three spots for most assists in a single season. In , Hawerchuk led the Sabres in all scoring categories: goals (35), assists (51) and points (86). Prior to his time with the Sabres, Hawerchuk played nine seasons with the Winnipeg Jets, where he also won the 198 Calder Memorial Trophy his rookie season. After the Sabres, he played for St. Louis and Philadelphia and eventually retired after 16 years in the NHL. During his career, the Toronto native amassed 518 goals, 891 assists and 1,49 points, placing him 1th on the career NHL points list at the time of his retirement. 1

7 You worked with one of the best goalies to ever put on the pads in Dominik Hasek. Did his unorthodox style make him difficult to coach? Part of the business of coaching at the pro level is that you have to recognize the established (player) and the developing (player). In Dom s case, the guy was already a Vezina and Hart Trophy winner. At that time, I believed that style wasn t the key. It looked odd because people didn t recognize what he was doing, but he was quite consistent. He anticipated what players were going to do. It wasn t about his technique, but more so the fact that he was always in the way. There s no secret. Perfect practice makes perfect. sabresgamenight Jim Corsi What has it been like to see Ryan Miller develop over the years? As you get closer to the Nirvana of excellence in all aspects of life let alone goaltending it s harder to get to the peak because the next step is that much steeper. In Millsie s case, he is constantly trying to evaluate what he s doing. His biggest strength is that he s not averse to playing outside of that comfort zone to get better. That s been the most important part of our development with him. We put a lot of things on his plate early on and established good habits. With poor footing, you could end up as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, falling over. Or you re built like the Egyptian pyramids with strong footing and those things last thousands of years. To get to the top, you ve got to put in the extra effort. That s the thing with Millsie he takes satisfaction in trying to get better everyday. That s any coach s dream. In the past, you ve been forced to fill in as a goalie during Sabres practices. How does it feel to take shots from NHL players? goaltender coach I do everything possible to get out of the way and the players do a very good job of missing me. The equipment is so much better, it s remarkable. You re really not scared. For me, it s about giving the guys enough of a challenge. Years ago, maybe five guys had hard shots and the rest shot like you and me. Today, everybody shoots hard and five of these guys shoot lasers. What was it like playing with Nazionale (the Italian national hockey team) when the team tied Canada and beat the U.S. in the 198 World Championships? It was one of the most remarkable times of my career. We had a bunch of kids that were right out of college and I only had a cup of coffee in the NHL. It wasn t just that we had won. It was the fact that these guys, many of whom would never have a chance to play in the NHL, beat their childhood heroes on the U.S. and Canadian teams. To this day, there is a connection between those old players. 5

Transitions can be tough, especially for Regehr, who had spent his entire 11-year career with the Flames. Consistency has always been Regehr s calling card, but with a fresh start this year, he decided to change his number. I actually wore 4 in juniors when I played in Kamloops for three years, he said. When I got traded here, Paul Gaustad phoned me and left me a message saying that he would be willing to give me the number if I wanted it. He s been here for years and made a name for himself with that number, so I said You know what? Don t worry about it. 4 is open. Regehr s number doesn t matter much because as the season wears on, more players around the league will remember his name. 7

15 sabresgamenight First of four meetings between the Sabres and Jets this season The Winnipeg Jets are celebrating the return of NHL hockey to the province of Manitoba after a 15-year hiatus. Despite losing their home-opener to the Canadiens, the sold-out crowd gave the team a standing ovation. So far, the Jets have compiled a 5-7- record in the 11-1 campaign. After making the switch from right wing to defense, Winnipeg s Dustin Byfuglien led all NHL defensemen with goals last season. He added 33 assists to finish with 53 points, which ranked fourth-best amongst all NHL blue-liners. Dale Hawerchuk will be enshrined in the Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame this evening. A 1 inductee of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Hawerchuk played nine seasons with the Winnipeg Jets before joining the Sabres via trade in 199. A: I was at home [in Sweden], so my younger brother and I watched it over the internet. Pretty exciting moment. It was actually on my birthday, too! Q: You made 33 saves against the Boston Bruins in your NHL debut in 9. What memories do you have from that game? A: Playing at the [TD] Garden in Boston was pretty awesome. It was too bad that we didn t win the game, but it was a big day for me. Q: Which NHL players did you admire growing up? A: Dominik Hasek and Martin Brodeur. Q: Ryan Miller has a few superstitions, do you have any? A: Yes, I do. I tap the posts a certain way and put everything on my right side on first. Stuff like that. Q: How will being the backup with the Sabres as opposed to an AHL starter help you with your game? A: I get to practice with some of the best shooters in the league and goalie coach Jimmy Corsi. Q: You signed a multi-year deal with Buffalo during the offseason. How did it feel? A: I was really happy to get my first one-way contract. Glad everything turned out well. Q: You had a record of 6--1 during last season s crucial final stretch. What was it like to help your team get into the playoffs? A: That was probably my best hockey memory. It was a lot of fun and the team played great in front of me. Q: If you had to choose, which Swedish music group do you prefer: ABBA or Ace of Base? A: Ace of Base. Q: Do you shop at IKEA? If so, do you like their famous Swedish meatballs? A: I do sometimes, yeah. The meatballs are really good, awesome actually. 19
