17 After winning just 12 matches in its first two seasons, Miami s women s soccer program, sparked by a special freshman class, turned it all around in The RedHawks opened the season with seven consecutive wins, including a 2-1 upset of arch-rival Cincinnati. Miami went on to finish third in the Mid-American Conference and advanced to its first MAC Tournament, where it fell to Eastern Michigan by penalty kicks after battling through four scoreless overtimes in an epic championship match. The 1999 RedHawks boasted the most improved record in the nation and things were just getting started. A pair of uncharacteristic home losses to Eastern and Central Michigan late in the season dropped the Red and White to a No. 4 seed for the MAC Tournament, but Miami peaked at just the right time, sweeping through the tournament without allowing a goal and capturing the program s first MAC Tournament title. Playing in their first NCAA Tournament, the RedHawks battled back numerous times before falling in double-overtime to Michigan, but the stage had been set for a return to the big dance.

18 History I n just its fifth year as a varsity program, Miami University s women s soccer team raised the bar once again, claiming a second consecutive Mid-American Conference Tournament championship and earning the league s first NCAA Tournament victory with a stunning upset of No. 19 West Virginia. After opening the season with two losses, the RedHawks reeled off wins in six of their next seven contests before a rough stretch of league play stalled their hopes of a first MAC regular-season title. A regular-season ending loss at Eastern Michigan left the Red and White with the No. 3 seed for the MAC Tournament. Miami s string of MAC Tournament dominance was barely challenged, as it cruised 7-0 over Buffalo in the quarterfinals, defeated Eastern Michigan for the first time in program history, 4-1, in the semifinals, and ousted Central Michigan, 3-1, for its second consecutive MAC Tournament title. The Red- Hawks 14 goals in three tournament games were a league record. A tough draw in the NCAA Tournament first round placed Miami versus nationally ranked West Virginia on the Mountaineers home turf in Morgantown, W.Va. Miss November herself, Danielle Berkemeier, scored a first-half penalty kick and it was all the offense the RedHawks would need in a 1-0 victory that arguably was the biggest upset of the tournament. In the second round, a sapped Miami team could not overcome an early deficit and tumbled to Dayton, 2-0. Despite the loss, the RedHawks had achieved what no MAC team before them could. 19 D espite all it had accomplished in the previous three seasons, there was still one notable absence from the Miami Soccer trophy case a MAC regular-season title. With a seasoned group of six seniors in their starting lineup, the RedHawks set out to change that in what would be a defining season for a senior class that already had accomplished so much. After splitting two matches during a season-opening road trip, the RedHawks took flight on an impressive eight-game unbeaten streak that included a Miami-Adidas Invitational title and a program-best 6-0 league start. Also included in the RedHawks impressive run was a program-record string of five straight shutouts. A narrow 3-2 loss to Central Michigan brought the RedHawks back to Earth momentarily, but nothing could deter them from their mission. Miami won seven consecutive games leading up to its season finale and clinched the MAC championship with a league-record 11 conference wins. In the regular-season finale, Miami hosted No. 13 Purdue in a nonconference tilt. The unheralded RedHawks gave the Big Ten power all it could handle in battling to a 1-1 tie before darkness set in and resulted in the game being called. In near-typical fashion, Miami breezed through the MAC Tournament field for the third consecutive season, outscoring the opposition by a combined margin of 13-2 and pushing past Ohio, 5-1, in the championship game to advance to the NCAA Tournament. After ousting Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Miami s run, which included a program-best 19 wins, ended at the hands of Michigan. 22 History T he 2012 season was one to remember for Miami, as the RedHawks had arguably their best season in program history. For just the second time ever, Miami captured the Mid-American Conference regular-season title, while also going on to win the MAC Tournament for the fourth time in school history, doing so on its home turf. The RedHawks then earned their fourth NCAA Tournament berth and made the second round for the third time in school history. Miami set a school record with 20 wins, during which the RedHawks rattled off an 11-game winning streak and a 16-game unbeaten streak, both of which are also program bests. In league play, Miami became just the second team in conference history to finish unbeaten in regular season play, going The Hawks nearly became the first team to win every MAC game, but tied Ball State in the regular-season finale, which snapped the win streak and gave Miami its only blemish in MAC play. After clinching the top seed in the MAC Tournament, the RedHawks hosted rival Ohio in the quarterfinals and dominated, despite only winning 1-0, as the 2012 senior class finished a perfect 5-0 against the Bobcats. Miami then downed Kent State in the semifinals, 3-1, leading to a showdown with No. 2 seed Central Michigan. With the game tied 1-1, sophomore Hailey Pleshakov headed home the winning goal in the second half to lead Miami to a 2-1 win and the MAC Tournament crown. In the NCAA Tournament, Miami traveled to Knoxville, Tenn. for a match-up with No. 20 Tennessee. Trailing 2-1 in the closing seconds, sophomore Kelsey Dinges booted in a goal with nine ticks left to force overtime, when junior Kayla Zakrzewski scored to lift the Hawks to the upset win. Miami then fell to No. 15 Duke, 4-1, in the second round, ending the magical season. Individually, senior Jess Kodiak was named an All-American and the MAC Offensive Player of the Year while freshman Haley Walter earned MAC Freshman of the Year honors. A total of five RedHawks were named All- MAC, including four on the first team.
