1 Ohio Softball History Nancy Schaub coached the 1975 squad to the AIAW National Championship. The 1974 team finished Mary Ann Stocker Softball has been played at Ohio University for over thirty years. Although accurate records were not kept before 1973, we do know the pioneers of Ohio softball. Coaches Ellen Gillespie, S. Jones, Jan Schmidt, Suzie Stammer and Susan Fossmeyer laid the foundation for the success of Ohio softball today. In 1972, the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) came into existence, helping coaches and universities organize softball programs with regional and national competition. Teams from 1972 to 1976 played either fast-pitch or slow-pitch, depending upon the level of competition. Initially recognized as a club sport, Ohio played slow-pitch softball until the school competed in three fast-pitch games in That first team, helmed by Head Coach Joyce King, finished undefeated at After the 1974 season, King handed the reins over to Nancy Schaub. Schaub s Bobcats remained undefeated until the middle of the 1975 season when they split a doubleheader with Ball State, losing the first game in Ohio fast-pitch history. Coach Schaub s 1975 team would not lose another game as it posted a 16-1 record and advanced to the AIAW National Championship for the first time. In 1976, the Bobcats record of 11-2 was good enough to earn a spot in the Ohio State Invitational, where they finished second to nationally-ranked Michigan State. Success continued in 1977 and 1978 as Ohio placed second in the state tournament both years with a combined overall record of The Bobcats played both slow- and fast-pitch under Schaub until 1979 when Kim Brown took over the head coaching position. Under Brown, the Bobcats went 12-8 in their very first season playing completely according to fast-pitch rules. Since 1974, Ohio has amassed a overall record with a winning percentage of.466. In 29 seasons as a member of the Mid-American Conference, the Bobcats have registered a mark (.431). In 1980, Ohio hired Karen Stadeck, who would become one of the most successful coaches in Bobcat history. In her rookie season, both the MAC and the NCAA began to embrace women s athletics. It was not until 1982, however, that either entity sponsored a tournament. In 1982, Ohio participated in the inaugural MAC Tournament, eventually finishing runner-up following a 3-1 loss to Miami. This was also the last year of the state tournament, with Ohio advancing to the finals in all five years of its history. In her six years at the university, Stadeck posted a record of to make her the second-winningest coach in school history among those with at least 100 games at Ohio. Her Bobcats made three state and two MAC Tournament appearances. After Stadeck left the program, her assistant Nanny Zirafi took over in 1986, compiling a record in her first season. Ohio would advance to the conference tournament that year, finishing fourth among all competitors. Chris Miner took over the softball program in 1989, joining the Bobcats after seven years at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. During her tenure at that school, Miner led five different teams into the national rankings.on September 16, 1993, Ohio put the program in the hands of Tracy Bunge. In her first season at the helm, Bunge put her stamp on the program. She took a team that finished in 1993 and guided it to a One percent better each day

2 record. It was the first time since 1985 that Ohio finished over.500 and had more than 24 win in one season. In 1995, just her second season, Bunge led her team to a record, the most wins ever by an Ohio softball team. The Bobcats also captured the first MAC title in Ohio softball history and their first appearance in NCAA regional play. Bunge finished her career at Ohio with a overall record. Her.578 winning percentage is the highest among coaches who have coached at least 100 games at Ohio. After serving under Bunge for three years, Roanna Brazier became the head of Ohio s softball program in late June of She stands as the first Ohio coach to have one of her players, Jen Morris, drafted into the Women s Professional Fast-Pitch Softball League. In 2002, the squad finished 29-24, including an impressive 15-4 home record. Those 29 victories tied with the 1994 group (29-21) for the third-highest win total in school history. It also marked the second consecutive season that the Bobcats finished over.500. The Cats ended up in second place in the MAC East standings with a record of In 2001, the Bobcats enjoyed their best season (32-23) under Brazier as five Ohio players were named to the All-MAC Second Team. All told, 20 Ohio players earned all-conference accolades under Brazier, including Kiersten Scrima, Kim Stinson, Tiffany Bolton and Kelli Bankert (2000 MAC Freshman of the Year) in 2002 and two-time first-team all-region pick Erin Chapman in 2003 and Jenny Tisevich was the 20th and final all-conference selection under Brazier when she was selected to the first team following her senior campaign. Brazier finished her coaching career at Ohio in 2005 with a program-high 204 wins. Jill Matyuch became the ninth coach in Bobcat history in She guided the Bobcats to the MAC Tournament two years in a row and has helped the Bobcats steadily improve their conference record each year. The Bobcats averaged 27 wins a year under Matyuch, which is the most wins for a Ohio softball team since In 2008, Matyuch guided Ohio to a record while directing the Bobcats to 10 wins in MAC play. Ohio finished the season playing arguably the best softball a Bobcat squad had in several years as the team advanced to the finals of the MAC Tournament before coming up just short of a potential NCAA berth. Individually, the Cats tallied their share of awards as Courtney Waters was named to the All-MAC First Team and Michelle Sauter garnered Second-Team All-MAC honors. Freshmen Melissa Bonner and Emily Wethington were both named to the Freshman Team. On July 17, a new chapter in Ohio softball began as Jodi Hermanek was named the 10th coach in the history of the program. Ohio finished the 2009 season and boasted arguably the best offense in the Mid-American Conference. The Bobcats hit.292 as a team and recorded a.351 on base percentage, both tops in the conference. In addition, the team posted marks that rank in the top 10 in school history in seven offensive categories, including hitting, runs scored, hits, home runs, doubles, triples and RBI. Five Cats picked up awards on the season, with freshman Alexis Zambrana being named both First Team All-MAC and First Team All-Mideast Region. In addition, Melissa Bonner, Deanna Hartsough, Brooke Morgart and Shalene Petrich all garnered Second Team All-MAC honors, with Zambrana being named to the Freshman Team. Hermanek has put together a string of solid seasons en route to a record through her first four years at Ohio. The Bobcats set multiple offensive records during the 2011 season on their way to a Mid-American Conference East Division title and a runner-up spot at the 2011 MAC Tournament. Ohio then had the best offensive season in program history, setting top marks in home runs (47), runs scored (293), and runs batted in (255). At the end of the 2012 campaign, junior catcher Lauren Gellerman was named Second Team All-Region by the NFCA and First Team All-MAC by the league office. Karen Stadek Ohio Softball 45
