2 SPECIALTY CLASSES NATIVE DRESS & COSTUME CLASSES 611. APPALOOSA NATIVE DRESS CLASS (a) The Appaloosa Native Dress Class commemorates the North American Indian and the Appaloosa Horse in period Regalia prior to the 1930 s. History tells us that the greatest numbers of Appaloosa horses in North America were owned by the Nez Perce. From their first visits into buffalo country the Nez Perce traded with the Plains tribes, notably the Crow, Blackfoot, and Sioux. Items in common use among any of these tribes a century or more ago will be considered as appropriate. (b) This class may be separated into the following separately judged classes: A Warriors, Braves, Ladies, Maidens 4 classes or B Warriors/Braves, Ladies/Maidens 2 classes provided it is so Stated in the Premium Book for the show. (c) All classes may show concurrently, but must be awarded separately. (d) Awards will be made to each category when classes are combined as in B as it is very difficult for Braves and Maidens to compete with Warriors and Women in full regalia APPALOOSA PAGEANT COSTUME CLASS (a) The Pageant Costume Class commemorates the Appaloosa Horse down through history in period regalia other than the North American Indian, ie: Chinese, Spanish, Egyptian, Kings, Queens, Noblemen or women, Conquistadors, Fur Traders, Buffalo hunters, Missionaries, Circus performers, Charros, Cowboys or girls, Pioneers, etc. (b) This Class may be divided into the following separately judged classes: A Men, Boys; Ladies, Girls 4 classes B Men all ages; Ladies all ages - 2 classes provided it is so stated in the Premium Book for the show GENERAL RULES (a) There shall be only one horse and one rider permitted per entry. (b) Exhibitors will not be allowed to use a travois or cart for safety reasons. (c) Babies or small children must be represented by dolls. (d) No Pets will be allowed as part of any entry. 3 dismissed from the arena and considered disqualified -immediately. (f) Classes should be conducted with dignity, honesty and integrity of impersonation. Any action, gesture or demeaning language will automatically disqualify the entry with loss of entry fee. (g) Competitors may ride bareback, astride or sidesaddle as fitting the period they are representing. (h) Classes will be judged on authenticity of trappings and equipment, attire of rider, markings and colorful qualities of the horse and the overall picture and presentation of the entry. (i) (j) Classes will be worked at the walk and jog only, on the rail, in both directions of the arena. Entries must complete the two required forward gaits in both directions. There shall be no work at will conducted during the class. (k) Entries may be required to back-up at the judge s request. (l) Entries will be lined up and must stand quietly while being judged on an individual basis. (m) Curb chains will be permitted but must be at least one-half inch in width, lie flat against the jaw, and meet with the approval of the judge(s). (n) Braided leather or rawhide chin straps may be less than one-half inch in the Native Dress Class only, notwithstanding rule #243, provided it is authentic to the era of the presentation. (o) War-Bridles or Mouth-Ropes may be used, provided that the rider has full control of their horse. (p) Paintings and markings made on the horse are permitted as enhancement to the authenticity of the overall picture, if the exhibitor is aware of the meaning of the symbols they use. (q) Horses will not be penalized for having metal horse shoes, having a clipped bridle path, banded mane, trimmed face, ears, and/or legs, nor should they be penalized for having none of the above. (r) Women/Ladies and Girls/Maidens may not show in Men/Warrior and Boys/Braves Classes and vice versa. (s) Women/Ladies and Men/Warriors are 19 years of age and over as of January 1 st of the current year. Girls/Maidens and Boys/Braves are 18 years of age and under as of January 1 st of the current year, as per the ApHCC General Youth Rules. (t) Refinement of entries is to be encouraged. 4 (u) Written and oral descriptions will not be used. Entries will be required to fill out a provided description form as follows: ENTRY #: REPRESENTS A [Age Category (ie: Man/Warrior, Boy/Brave, Woman/Lady, Girl/ Maiden)] FROM THE [Native Band, Group, Area, or Country represented (ie: Nez Perce, Circus, Plains Cree or Egyptian, etc.)] DURING THE [Time Era (ie: 1400 s or 1850 s, etc.)] 654. For leasing of racehorses, see ApHCC Regulations, Part 4. D For races sponsored by a provincial racing association, that portion of the race purse that is nonpublic money should be distributed to those horses racing in the race by the provincial racing association in cooperation with the race bookkeeper. The Announcer will read out the corresponding above description of each entry as they enter the arena. It is suggested that the announcer give an account of the history of the Appaloosa Horse from a time period provided by the show committee while this class is being judged DEFINITIONS ARTIFACT - an authentic historic relic REPLICA - an authentic re-creation of an artifact PSUEDO - an item made from any available material that is similar to, or, made to resemble an original piece RAWHIDE - an untanned hide, almost transparent, depending upon thickness BRAIN-TANNED (Indian Tanned) - refers to the process of scraping, stretching and tanning a hide by hand- rubbing it with a brain/ash solution. It is very porous and easily sewn by hand, is white or cream coloured. SMOKED - refers to the process of smoking a tanned hide to darken the colour and waterproof it. Length of smoking time denotes degree of colour from light gold to brown. COMMERCIAL TAN - is a chemical process which does not break down the grain leaving it nonporous, usually has a smooth and a rough side, smells like chemicals and is available in all colours. REGALIA - refers to the clothing and personal accoutrements of the Native American Indian Warrior/Brave. DRESS - refers to the clothing and personal accoutrements of the Native American Indian Lady/Maiden. TRAPPINGS - refers to the tack, saddlery and decorations the Native American Indians used on their horses. KETO - is the protector worn on the wrist/arm to protect the archer from injury by the bowstring PROHIBITED APPOINTMENTS - Hackamore Bits or mechanical hackamores, twisted wire mouth pieces, travois, carts, babies, children or pets. Use of Ladies or Girls/Maidens dress or trappings in the Mens/Warriors or Boys/ Braves class or vice versa A. LADIES NATIVE DRESS (1) BASIC Dress should include a dress (either leather or trade cloth), a belt, belt pouch, moccasins, braid decorations, a headband Page 4 of Rules - Segment 7 Page 13 of Rules - Segment 7

5 has achieved 50 points when racing against horses of other breeds. SUPERIOR CERTIFICATE OF MERIT - Awarded when a horse has achieved 100 points when racing against horses of other breeds. SUPREME CERTIFICATE OF MERIT - Awarded when a horse has achieved 200 points when racing against horses of other breeds A horse s speed index will be determined by the same method used by the American Quarter Horse Association at approved tracks and distances Speed Rating - The speed rating is a comparison of the horse s running time with the track record for the distance which was in effect at the opening of the meet. The track record receives the standard rating of 100. For each one-fifth of a second that a horse betters or runs slower than the track record, one point is added or subtracted from 100 to determine the speed rating for that particular race. No speed ratings will be given for races of less than three furlongs (a) Micro-chipping, tattooing, freeze marking and/ or branding are changes of markings and as such require a certificate change pursuant to the ApHCC Regulations Part 5 C. (b) Any Appaloosa Horse may have a microchip implant as means of identification. The owner may apply to the ApHCC and purchase a microchip from the ApHCC. Implanting by a Veterinary Doctor is mandatory. If an ApHCC horse or applicant horse is purchased with a microchip implanted, ApHCC must be informed. A statement that the horse has been microchip implanted will be recorded on the horse s certificate. (c) All race horses must be tattooed by an official representative of the ApHCC. (d) Microchip implant, tattoo, freeze mark or brands or any other identifying marking or apparatus may NOT be added, applied, or implanted or otherwise used if the description on the Certificate does not match the horse to which a marking is proposed All transfers of ownership resulting from a claiming race shall comply with the Animal Pedigree Act of Agriculture Canada and with the ApHCC Constitution, Bylaws, Rules and Regulations Notwithstanding ApHCC Bylaws, SECTION XII D. 3. F. in the event that a horse applying for an ApHCC Certificate has been raced under pari-mutual betting in a foreign country and has a name registered with a Foreign Registry, which is duplicated in the ApHCC Register of Appaloosa Horses, then the ApHCC Registrar shall insert the initials of the country of the Foreign Registry in brackets following the horse s name on the new certificate [eg. RAIL RUNNER (USA)]. Page 12 of Rules - Segment 7 with or without one or two feathers OR a basket hat OR a headscarf, necklace, handbag, a lap robe/blanket, and a quirt. (2) OPTIONAL ITEMS could include an awl case, knife and scabbard on belt, leggings, personal jewelry, ie: rings, earrings, bracelets, etc., baby board with doll. A lady could put red face paint silver dollar size on each cheek. B. MAIDENS NATIVE DRESS (1) BASIC Dress should include a dress (either leather or trade cloth), a belt, a belt pouch, moccasins, braid decorations, a headband with or without 1 small feather dangling, a lap robe/blanket and a quirt. (2) OPTIONAL ITEMS could include a doll in baby board overall combined length not to exceed twenty inches, a purse, leggings and personal jewelry A. LADIES NATIVE DRESS HORSE (1) BASIC TRAPPINGS should include a Women s frame saddle with a high front and back OR a white man s stock or cavalry saddle, saddle blanket, bridle or rawhide hackamore, breast collar/horse necklace, saddlebags cape/apishamore OR parfleches. (2) OPTIONAL TRAPPINGS could include a drinking horn, lance carrying case, furs and/ or skins, crupper, mane decoration, mask or other face decoration, gew gaws or leg decorations. B. MAIDEN S NATIVE DRESS HORSE (1) BASIC TRAPPINGS should include a Women s frame saddle, or a whiteman s stock or cavalry saddle, saddle blanket, bridle or rawhide hackamore, breast collar/horse necklace, saddlebags cape/apishamore OR parfleches. (2) OPTIONAL TRAPPINGS could include a drinking horn, furs and/or hides, or a crupper PROHIBITED APPOINTMENTS: LADIES AND MAIDENS NATIVE DRESS & HORSES (a) (b) (c) (d) Use of any Warrior s or Brave s Regalia such as any weapons, strike-a-lite bag, pipe and pipe bags, feather fans, warbonnets, roaches, dance regalia, rattles, flutes, whistles, or drums, war bridle or man s style frame or pad saddle. Horses must not be painted or wear feathers anywhere. Saddlebags, cape/apishamore should not cover horse s legs. Maidens may not use any Ladies Dress such as basket hats or scarves, face paint, dolls with baby boards over 20 inches overall length, lance carrying case, or other adult accoutrements. 6 (e) No ceremonial dance items ie: feather bustles or rattles A. WARRIORS NATIVE DRESS (1) BASIC REGALIA should include a headdress ie: feather bonnet OR roach OR feather OR fur or animal with or without horns/antlers, etc., braid-ties, hair ornaments, personal medicine bag and jewelry, choker necklace, breechcloth, belt with pouch and knife in scabbard, leggings, quirt, moccasins and face paint. (2) OPTIONAL REGALIA could include a war shirt, breastplate, necklaces, arm bands, beaded wrist cuffs, war club, a shield, tomahawk, keto, bow and arrows in case, rifle, powder horn, shot bag, guantlet gloves, sash, lance, banner, coup-stick, staff, hand drum, pipe-bag and pipe, tobacco bag, strike-a-lite bag, feather fan, flute, whistle, mirror board, drinking horn or robe. B. BRAVES NATIVE DRESS (1) BASIC REGALIA should include a headband with or without one small dangling feather, braids with ties OR long loose hair, hair ornaments, small medicine bag around neck, breechcloth, belt with pouch and knife in scabbard, moccasins and a quirt. (2) OPTIONAL REGALIA could include a keto and small bow and arrows in a case, beaded cuffs, arm bands, personal jewelry, horsehair or rawhide rope, breastplate, shirt, leggings, flute, whistle, mirror board, drinking horn A. WARRIOR S NATIVE DRESS HORSE (1) BASIC TRAPPINGS should include a pad saddle, or a men s style frame saddle, whiteman s stock or cavalry saddle and saddle blanket, bridle OR rawhide hackamore OR war bridle, horse necklace/breast collar OR bell collar, an animal hide or fur to sit on ie: wolf, coyote, buffalo or wild cat. (2) OPTIONAL TRAPPINGS could include feather decorations in any or all of the bridle, mane, tail, forelock and/or under the chin; a crupper, a face mask, painted symbols, tail tied up for war, bells OR beaded anklets, a hair rope braided into the mane near withers looping under the neck, a lap robe or blanket. B. BRAVE S NATIVE DRESS HORSE (1) BASIC TRAPPINGS should include a hair rope braided into the mane near withers and looping under the neck, bridle OR rawhide hackamore. (2) OPTIONAL TRAPPINGS could include a pad saddle, or a men s style frame saddle, a whiteman s stock or cavalry saddle and saddle blanket, horse necklace/breast collar OR bell collar. the gate allowing any Appaloosa running to receive points and awards under the ApHCC Open Point System CANADIAN APPALOOSA STAKES RACE entries are limited to Canadian Bred horses Horses with a Certificate of Registration or Certificate of Pedigree may race in futurities at the discretion of the association or committee setting conditions for such races. ApHCC points will not be awarded for these races A complete record of the results of all races run during a meet must be kept by the secretary of the operating association, or deputy, and reports of all races must be sent to the ApHCC. Race results must be submitted on forms provided by the ApHCC for that purpose along with the race programs immediately following the close of the meet, or from day to day during the progress of a meet if possible. In no event shall the report of a race be delayed more than two weeks after it is run Points will be awarded to all horses in those races which comply with ApHCC rules and regulations. Eligible races would include allowance races, derbies, maturities, and stakes races. Points will be awarded as per the following sliding scale: # In Race Placings 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th APPALOOSA HORSE CLUB OF CANADA NATIONAL RACING AWARDS - ApHCC National Racing Awards are awarded to Appaloosas entered into the Register of Appaloosa Horses earning points at ApHCC approved races as per rules #642 through #646. NATIONAL SUPERIOR RACING AWARD - This title is awarded by the ApHCC to any eligible Appaloosa horse who has earned 25 or more points. This horse must earn points in three different distances or must win at least three firsts. NATIONAL SUPREME RACING AWARD - This title is awarded by the ApHCC to any eligible Appaloosa horse who has earned 100 or more points. RACING REGISTER OF MERIT - This award can be achieved by obtaining a speed index of 80 or higher or achieving a speed rating of 98 or higher APPALOOSA OPEN POINT SYSTEM RACE AWARDS - The Open Point System will be used for the tabulation of these awards. See the ApHCC Open Point System for further information. CERTIFICATE OF MERIT - Awarded when a horse Page 6 of Rules - Segment 7 Page 11 of Rules - Segment 7

7 635. EXHIBITORS ATTIRE: Competitors should dress conservatively and neatly (not in period costumes) according to the style of the present day. Men should wear coat and tie, and a suit or dress with a hat for women. If a female driver is in a dress, she should wear a lap robe or apron. Western style or English style dress is permitted. Competitors may wear rain gear if the weather is inclement. Headers should also be suitably attired. Proper, safe footwear must be worn PROHIBITED: A. Stirrup-type carts or sulkies, or any type of racing bike or chariot. B. Pets of any kind while in the arena. C. Artificial appliances of any kind, particularly spoon cruppers. LADIES SIDE SADDLE CLASS 637. This class is conducted as a normal pleasure class with ladies only (not men) to ride, sidesaddle rather than astride. The show management has the option to offer a Western Sidesaddle Pleasure class, and an English Sidesaddle Pleasure class, or a combined English and Western class. This class shall be a specialty class and the use of a side saddle is not permitted in any class except as designated in individual class rules, or in Pageant Costume classes. If riding English, the entry may compete in Hunt Seat fashion or Saddle Seat style Horses shall be shown at the walk, jog or trot, and lope or canter, and shall stand quietly in the line-up and back readily. The Judge may ask for a collected or extended gait for any gait in this class. Horses may be asked to reverse at the walk or trot/jog only. Horses must be brought to a walk before changing gaits Horses shall be judged for their ability to perform as a pleasurable ride for a lady under the sidesaddle. Manners are of utmost importance, as are obedience and willingness to perform the gaits. Light contact with the bit is desired. Whips or crops are optional TACK AND ATTIRE A correct sidesaddle of English or Western type either old or new, but in good repair and safe. Bridle suited to the saddle type. Rider's attire: either English or Western modern attire Also refer to General Rules for English and Western Pleasure. APPALOOSA RACING REGULATIONS 642. In races that the ApHCC or a provincial racing association provide the purse money, only horses entered into the Register of Appaloosa Horses will be allowed to race and receive ApHCC National Points and Awards. If there are not enough Appaloosas which have been entered into the Register of Appaloosa Horses to fill the gate, registered horses of other breeds may be used to fill Page 10 of Rules - Segment PROHIBITED APPOINTMENTS: WARRIOR S & BRAVE S NATIVE DRESS & HORSES (a) Use of any Ladies or Maiden s Dress, such as Ladies frame saddle, saddlebags, cape/ apishamore, saddle purse or bags, female clothing or jewelry, or a baby board. (b) Braves may not use any Warrior s Regalia such as any weapons of war, warbonnets, feather headdresses, fur or animal headdresses with or without horns/antlers, pipes and pipe bags, lances, banners or coup-sticks, etc. (c) No ceremonial dance items, ie: feather bustles or rattles JUDGES INSTRUCTIONS Judging of the Native Dress and Pageant Costume Classes shall be based upon the official Rules of the ApHCC, the requirement standards for each division of these classes, and the 58 page American Indian Costume Class book by Jack R. Williams, the 2 Page Costume Classes for Appaloosas by Dr. Francis Haines, and the Costume Brochure by Dr. Francis Haines. SCORING: Items should be rated in this order: 1 - Artifacts and Accurate Replicas 2 - Pseudo 70% - Regalia/Dress and Trappings of horse and rider. Markings and colourful qualities of the horse 15% - Movement and attitude of the horse Completion of the required gaits 15% - Overall presentation and beauty Condition and placement of accoutrements The riders knowledge of his or her presentation. It is permissible to ask questions concerning the rider s knowledge about his/her presentation and era it represents. MINUS POINTS should be deducted for overdress, each article too ornate, inappropriate, or counterfeit, depending upon the degree the judge feels that they detract from the integrity or beauty of the overall presentation. BUCKBOARD DRIVING CLASS 623. The Buckboard Driving class is designed to depict the early or Frontier age of which the Appaloosa horse was a part. The class should depict the usefulness of the Appaloosa as a family horse for pleasure driving. The class shall be judged on authenticity of equipment, attire of driver and passengers, markings and colourful qualities of the horse or horses, and the overall picture and presentation. Also considered are: manners and performance of the horse(s), substance, quality and suitability to purpose, uniformity of entry, and neatness and originality Either one or two horses are to be shown in harness to a four-wheeled vehicle. The type of vehicle shall be optional, providing it portrays early or Frontier mode of transportation. All vehicles shall be of good appearance, in good repair and of safe stability. 8 625. Horses shall be shown at a flat-footed walk, normal trot and fast trot, with any extreme speed to be penalized, in both directions of the arena. Horses shall stand quietly and back readily. One header (handler) is permitted into the arena when the horses are asked to line up, and this header may be a passenger that steps down to head the entry. Headers must be aged 19 and older and must position themselves two to three feet (2-3 ) in front and to the left of the horse s head. Headers shall stand still with hands behind their back. Should it become necessary to restrain a horse prior to the completion of judging, the Judge shall penalize that entry. Judges shall also penalize an entry whose header disturbs or distracts any horse. Headers shall be neatly dressed in suitable attire The driver and any passengers shall be attired in clothing fitting to the era, keeping in mind the early or frontier theme. The type of harness is optional and must be clean and neat and in good repair. Whips must be carried and may be in the driver's hand or in the whipstock but in plain view. No pets are permitted with the entry. A snaffle bit with an overcheck, or a snaffle bit or Liverpool bit are considered proper. Spoon cruppers are prohibited on any harness. Sidechecks and/or any martingales are optional Horses in this class shall be penalized for pulling on the bit, head tossing, breaking stride, traveling sideways, excessive switching of the tail, or other indications of disobedience and/or resistance. If the entry is a team, consideration shall be given to uniformity and suitability as a well-matched pair. PLEASURE DRIVING 628. Horses are to be shown in a modern, one horse two or four-wheeled vehicle, in appropriate harness. No more than two persons will be permitted in the vehicle while the entry is in competition, and no pets are permitted. Consideration shall be given to the fact that a pleasure driving horse is just that, a horse that is pleasurable and enjoyable to drive. They should perform in a manner similar to a riding type horse CLASS CONDITIONS Horses shall enter the ring at the walk, to avoid any collision between horses entering the arena and horses already in the arena. Entries shall then show at the following gaits, walk, trot and strong trot, in both directions of the show ring at the direction of the Ring Master. Such change of direction shall be accomplished by the horses crossing the show ring while walking only. A. Walk - true and flat-footed B. Trot - relaxed and ground covering, a two-beat gait C. Strong trot - this is not an extended trot. The trot should merely be faster, with the horse reaching for more ground. A road gait. Page 8 of Rules - Segment Horses shall demonstrate each of these gaits, in both directions of the ring. Change of direction shall be made at the Ringmaster's instruction; when signaled, each competitor will be directed to cross the ring on the diagonal at the walk, until all entries have reversed direction. Any excessive speed at any required gait or any exaggerated animation will be penalized. Horses shall line up when asked, and shall stand quietly and back readily At the Judge's discretion, any gait may be collected or lengthened. Horses shall not be asked to canter or gallop and will be penalized for doing so, or for breaking from the gait requested At the discretion of the show management a single header or groom shall be permitted into the arena to stand at the entry's head while in the line-up. This person may be the passenger from the vehicle. This person must be an adult, 19 years or older, and must not interfere with any instructions the driver is asked to give the horse (ie. back). Headers must position themselves two to three feet (2-3 ) in front and to the left of the horse s head. Headers shall stand still with hands behind their back. Should it become necessary to restrain a horse prior to the completion of judging, the Judge shall penalize that entry. Judges shall also penalize an entry whose header disturbs or distracts any horse. Headers shall be neatly dressed in suitable attire Entries shall be judged: 80% on suitability for assuring a safe and pleasurable drive, using the required skills; and 20% on conformation, substance, quality, manners and the safety and appearance of the driver, the harness and vehicle. (a) A pleasure driving horse should carry himself in a natural balanced position with a relaxed head and neck. His poll should be level with, or slightly above the level of the withers. (b) Maximum credit should be given to a horse that moves straight with free movement, manners and a bright expression. (c) The horse shall be severely penalized if: - He carries his head behind the vertical - He is overflexed - Is excessively nosed-out - If the poll is below the withers (d) Horses to be penalized for pulling on the bit, tossing of head, breaking stride, going sideways and excessive switching of the tail EQUIPMENT: A modern, two-wheeled or four wheeled vehicle, drawn with a collar or breast-collar type harness, using a standard driving bridle with or without blinkers and equipped with a non-shanked snaffle bit, a Liverpool, Buxton or other normal driving bit. The vehicle used must be in sound condition. Harness must be sound, in good repair and made of leather. A proper driving whip must be carried, either in the driver's hand or in the whipstock, and must be in plain view. Check reins, side reins, overcheck, or martingales are optional equipment.
