8 4-H Exhibit Goal Write-Up Every exhibit judged during Conference Judging on Tuesday, July 17 will need a write-up attached which answer the questions below. Judges have 7-10 minutes to evaluate the total exhibit on the learning involved, workmanship, and general appearance. The information needs to be well organized and detailed. 1. What did you plan to learn or do? (What was your exhibit goal(s)?) 2. What steps did you take to learn or do this? 3. What were the most important things learned? Also If you have a Home Improvement, Visual Art or Clothing exhibit, don t forget to include your Design Elements or Art Principles in your write-up. See the fairbook for complete details. If you are using other s work of art, crafts, recipes, etc., it is important to give credit to those individuals or companies who have created materials, resources, logos, trademarks, photos, etc. in your write-ups. If in doubt...ask permission. An example of a letter requesting permission is available online at or at the Extension Office. Getting permission takes a long time don t delay. If using Pinterest for exhibit ideas, please note that you must credit the original creator not Pinterest. Pinterest is a portal, like Google. It is a virtual display board not the original source of the idea. Food & Nutrition exhibitors please read the Inappropriate Food Exhibits for Iowa 4-H Fairs publication. Copies can be found at the Extension Office, fairbook, or our webpage. Preserved food entries must include a Food Preservation Exhibit label. Only food processed after August 1, 2017 is acceptable. Labels are available at the Extension Office or visit When using the 4-H emblem, please follow the 4-H emblem guidelines. A copy of these guidelines can be obtained at the Extension Office. As you work on your exhibits, write down what you did, keep track of expenses, and what you have learned. All of these things should go into your exhibit goal write-up and 4-H record book. Design Elements & Art Principles CONFERENCE JUDGING If you are taking a Clothing, Visual Arts, or Home Improvement exhibit Design Elements Art Principles to the fair this year, don t forget to include Design Elements or Art Prin- Line Rhythm ciples that are relevant to your exhibit. Below is a list of Design Elements and Art Principles. Refer to the fair book for complete descrip- Shape Proportion tions. Please take the time to include these important pieces of information in your exhibit. See the example below of how to use the Design Element texture in a reupholstered chair exhibit write-up. Values/Color Texture Space Emphasis Balance Unity Texture is a surface characteristic that can be touched or seen. Contrasting textures add interest. In my exhibit, the chair has two textures. The upholstery is a rougher, rigid texture. The legs of the chair are smooth and follow a curve. The oversized upholstery tacks also add smooth texture. 8
