CuIIins, i 9 Oklahoma* I came to this country from Mi lam County, fexas, in 1885 to work on mo Jaybuckle ranch,owned by the Powers Company. She first year 1 worked on the Jaybuckle ranch they put me with three other men in a camp on the Worth fork of Red River at the mouth of Turkey Creek. He had to ride a line up.and down the river to k*»ep the cows out of the territory and to^keep the Indians from coming across aed stealing our cows* Several times when I started out from camp in tha morning I would strike a trail where some one had been driving the cattle* Several different times X have caught five to twelve Indians driving eight to ten head of cattle headed for. the Washita Biver* If I could catch the Indians with the cattle before th«y were butchered l*d have no trouble in getting them back* ' * Late one morning 1 struck a trail and saw seven Indians driving four head of cattle - I never caught up with them until they had reached Sandstone on the tashita River and they had just finished butchering the four head as i drove up* fhere

In the early days the Indians would come over and sell ponies for little or nothing;then in three or four days i another crowd of Indians would come back and claim that the Indians who had sold the ponies had stolen the ponies from them. So keep down trouble people would usually just let the ponies go.. I was buying cattle for George Boyd and Sam Doxle and 1 was needing a pony pretty bad and two Kiova Indians cane over with a alee little pony and wanted to sell it to me. 1 told them 1 didn't want it for I just figured it was stolen. 1 wanted it all right enough but (feorge Allen, a blacksmith, bought it and when 1 saw Allen leading the pony up the street 2 asked him what he gam for it. lie Baid,"flC.OO" I asked him what he was going to do with the pony and he said, "Sell him". Be wanted to sell the pony for fls.oo as he wanted to nake»5.00.

In three weeks four Arapaho Indians oaae over and claimed the pony, saying that a JCiowa Indian had stolen the pony from them and they Wanted me to give bim&p. I wouldn't give* the pony up. they said they*d be back 1A five "steeps" (days). About an hour after i had talked with this lowa some of the boys told me the Indians had, stolen the pony' from the place where I had him staked. Share were fltte or six horses tied to the rack in front of the saloon and 1 told John Users' to get several men and to follow ate* 1 jumped on one horse and the rest followed* we caught tip with the Indians at Sim iiiver at a palace their known as Bude Crossing - the Indian didn't want to stop. 1 was riding a big horse ao 1 let the Indian get a little bit the tart of me and I ran against him and knocked him down* I polled my gun on him and made him stand still till the others got there* ton «e took the pony and came back to Mangus. Mr. Byera thought the Indians would be back in six days to bring witnesses to prove that this was their pony. I kept the pony thirty days and traded hin for a cow and a calf; after I'd traded off the pony the Indians brougtt the United states

They caught the Jliowa Indian who was suppospd to have stolen.the pony and put him in/jail and George -a-lien and l made three trips to SI Reno yo court as witnesses., They pu$ the case off twice and the /bird time the Kiowa pleaded guilty. / / " In three days the Indian s^id that th» Interpreter had lied and before the trial c,ume up again the Indian had died. We went to Vernon, Texas, once a month for groceries and f other supplies and the lumber of my home in which Jl now live I - - was bought at Vernon, Texas, and freighted to ttangum.
