Born SUMMARY of OH 1821 This interview was recorded on October 16, 2012, for the Maria Rogers Oral History Program and Boulder County Parks and Open Space. The interviewers are Sheryl Kippen, Carol Beam, and Kevin Grady. The interview also is available in video format, filmed by Sheryl Kippen. ABSTRACT: Bud, Velma, and Dale Heil discuss the Heil Ranch including its purchase by the family in 1949, its many uses over the years, the buildings that dot the ranch land, and the sale of much of the ranch to create Boulder County open space. They describe the houses and outbuildings that the family used, many of which they moved from Boulder. Buildings include a barn built by expanding a garage, a cabin known as the outlaw cabin, and the Altona schoolhouse. They also discuss the many public events hosted by the ranch, such as hayrides, the Beer and Steer event, Christmas tree and firewood cutting, and paintball games. 2 Bud: Moved to Boulder County in Bud: How his family came to buy the Heil Ranch. Family was involved in farming and ranching even before buying the Boulder County ranch. Crops raised, cattle. Bud: Ranch was bought in the wake of his father s health problems including a heart attack. More discussion of crops raised. Quarrying. Selling firewood. Describes a year that was so difficult they had to sell off cows because they didn t have anything to feed them (1954). Porcupines: used to be plentiful, but started to disappear about ten years ago, haven t been spotted in last five years. Location where elk calved.
