Interview With U«Hays, Rt. 2, BBjenohard, Oklahoma* X was. born In Arkansas, June 24, 1879, and remained there till at the age of fourteen years, into a covered wagon and with ay parents I was loaded came to the Indian Territory, Grossing ww Arkansas Hirer near old Tamaha, Indian Territory ^ which place came near being the end of the expedition, 'Share was no bridge and we were towed across by a tug boat which was pulled across by an underwater cable. When we ware just about the middle of the stream, something went wrong with the cabjbe and the boat broke loose and down the rirer we went at the mercy of the torrent After floating mvm two miles we jammed into beck whioh happened to be the side we were trying to gain so we lost no time in raurt&g our departure fres t&s boat* We traveled along, crossing Canadian River ai the old Young Crossing known aa the old corner saloon

IHEEH7IM && finally settled In the Chickaeaw Nation, ten miles outh of wliero Ma now ia«oar home was a log cabin of which the windows and doors were of hand-made boards end opened and closed from the outside. We had little furniture end what we did have was mostly hand-made* Tin plates and bucket lids served for plates end tin cans served for oups. Everything moved along nicely; people made an easy living for game was plentiful and In meay instances a turkey or doer could be killed from the door of the cabin. My first employment here was using a pair of mules and a taty-did plow, breaking out sod. The sodtosso rery heevy when breaking that it was a continual roll of turf ffcom one end to th@ other, Tfcs lend^ hcrsrerp waa very fertile and when a crop was once planted a good narrest was assured* The principal crops grown were corn and wheat; corn yielded from fifty to seventy-five bu»h#ls per acre and wheat from twenty to thirty bushel».
5 HAJTS, & IOTEHHEW. KH95, 391 OH Roff was a «nall count 17 town and was the principal trading point of this section of the country and was located some distance east of where Hoff sow stand8} the town was moved in In 1895 the town of Ada was a ranch and ferm land, There were only two stores there, the first of which was owned by Jeff Held and the second one was owned by A* John Daggs. This place was used principally ss an exchange to trade with the Indians who were very friendly, especially the Chiekaaaw tribe. The Chickasaws were greet sportsmen, especially at bronc busting end steer riding and were good narksmen with bows and arrows* When, one of them was hunting he always relied an his bow and arrows rather than his fire arms* In 1395 bsgs.ii the fuller development of this section of the country* The railroads came through and the town of Ma was then fully established end grew et a very rapid rate until today it has become a center of this section and has many advantages*
