SCD Fat and Tenderness are usually done together. Then there is the GH Exon 5 test. These tests are described in detail on the American Wagyu Association website and I would refer you there for explanation and details. What I will say is that they are only part of the genetic picture of these wonderful cattle. This is good, accurate, information about qualitative fat and tenderness of meat, with the SCD fat and Tenderness scores; and the GH Exon 5 test gives us some specific indication of growth and marbling. Some may argue that these scores/measures do not mean much. We have few numbers of Wagyu in North America that make progeny testing difficult, but we are making progress. I think that as long as the information we receive is correct, and we use common sense in applying it, we can benefit from it. Just remember, there is much more to a Wagyu cow or bull than being AA 10 with a CC Exon 5 score. Open your eyes (and your mouths).

3 JW WAGYU BREEDING PHILOSOPHY When we step back and consider how we should approach mating and breeding these very special cows, the first thing to consider for us to do is not to mess up the wonderful meat that these cattle produce. We feel it is a good idea to keep around 50% Tajima breeding in a Wagyu male or female when possible. Then look to improve the combination with a balanced approached. We can work on size, maternal traits, and other things, but do not forget the meat! Another tool we have through the American Wagyu Association is the inbreeding coefficient monitor that can give us the inbreeding coefficient per cent of a mating or potential mating of two fullblood registered parents. We like to keep this level at 10% or below when possible. The last thing I would mention is the handling of undesirable recessive genes. JW Wagyu makes every effort to avoid the transmission of undesirable recessive genes to future generations. We recognize that there have been outstanding Wagyu that have made positive contributions to the breed that were/are carriers of these genes (068 and Itomoritaka to name two), but we have good sons of these bulls to carry on these genetics. We feel any Wagyu to be used in seedstock production should be free of undesirable recessives by pedigree or by test.

4 JW s STORY Jimmy Webb was born and raised in Central Mississippi. There he developed his first two loves; cattle and football. These two loves would drive him to great success in both fields. After a successful college football career at Mississippi State, he was named as a first team All American Defensive Lineman and was selected in the first round of the 1975 NFL Draft with the tenth overall pick by the San Francisco 49 ers. He went on to play six seasons with the 49 ers and one with the San Diego Chargers. After his second season in the NFL he was accepted into the first class of the Mississippi State Veterinary School. He went on to complete his doctorate in veterinary medicine between football seasons in Dr. Webb is one of two who have been both an active player in the NFL and a licensed veterinarian. After completing his football career, Dr. Webb has spent the last 30 years working with cattleman throughout United States to improve the performance of their herds through genetics. He has been an active member of the American Embryo Transfer Association for the past 33 years and served as president of the AETA from 1991 to He remains an active embryo transfer practitioner in Central California. Jimmy and his wife of 40 years Cindy have two sons, Josh, who resides in Dallas, Texas with his wife and two sons and Micah who resides in Houston, Texas with his wife and two children. His dam is 106A who raised a very nice calf of her own and is by, you guessed it Shigeshigetani. 500Y is her dam. This bull is AA 4 also.
