BOA 503 Work Sheet (Unit Conversions) Period Name CRS SKILL LEVEL DESCRIPTION Level 1 ALL students must BOA 403 Convert one, two- step or three- step unit attain mastery at this level conversions. BOA 503 Level 2 MOST students will attain mastery of the focus skill in isolation. Level 3 SOME students will attain mastery of focus skill with other skills Level 4 SOME students will attain mastery of focus topics covered in a more abstract way Level 5 FEW students will attain mastery of the extension skill. BOA 503 Convert units of measure (e.g. feet per second BOA 603 Solve word problems requiring unit conversion and integration of pre- algebra concepts. LEVEL 1 1. How many days are equivalent to 50,000 seconds? 2. How many cups are in 13 gallons? 3. How many inches are in 100 meters? 1

4. A mole is a unit of measurement used in chemistry. The masses of one mole of three elements are in the table. Element Mass of 1 mole Hydrogen 1.01 grams Carbon grams Oxygen grams a. A 100- gram sample of ascorbic acid contains 54.5 grams of oxygen. To the nearest tenth, find the number of moles of oxygen in the sample. b. A 100- gram sample of ascorbic acid contains 4.58 grams of hydrogen. To the nearest tenth, find the number of moles of hydrogen. c. If you have 150 grams of Carbon Dioxide how many moles do you have? Remember Carbon Dioxide molecule is one Carbon atom and two Oxygen atoms inches is equal to how many miles? LEVEL 2 6. Which is longer, a one kilometer race or a 1500 yards race? EXPLAIN! 7. The average soccer ball kicked by a profession is 60 miles per hour. How fast is that in km/second? 2

8. Convert 17 gallons/minute to pints/second. 9. Amanda reads 300 pages in 10 hours. If each page has 200 words on it, how many words did Amanda read per minute? 10. A scale model of a building has a height of 1/5 meter. The scale of the model is 1 cm = 0.5m. What is the actual height of the building in feet? 11. Marcy is making beef stew. Her recipe calls for 2 pounds of beef. She looks in the refrigerator and sees that she has 2 kilograms of beef wrapped in a package. Marcy isn t sure how much of the beef she should use. Figure out how much of the beef Marcy needs for her recipe. 12. Which is longer, a one mile race or a 1500 m race? EXPLAIN! 13. A water fountain spouts 200 liters in 50 minutes. What is that in gallons per second? 3

14. Elana Meyers, an American bobsledder, was clocked at traveling 145 km/hr. How fast is that in feet per minutes? LEVEL The average pitch in Major League Baseball is miles per hour. a. How fast is that in feet per minute? b. How fast is that in inches per second? 16. In 2008, Aja Van Hout broke the Wisconsin state record by swimming the 500 yard freestyle 4 minutes and seconds. a. How fast is that in feet per minute? b. How fast is that in inches per second? 17. Rita sprinted 77 feet in 10 seconds. How many miles per hour is this? 18. The space shuttle travels at an orbital speed of about 17,240 miles per hour. How many meters per second is this? 4

19. Shannon types 45 words per minute. Micah types 3000 words in an hour. Who types faster? Prove your answer 20. A rating of F5 is given to the most destructive of tornados. The minimum wind speed is 261 mph. How fast is that in inches per second? 21. Angelo drove 225 miles last week and used 10.7 gallons of gas. How many inches did Angelo drive for each quart of gas he used? 22. Ashley is re- carpeting her living room. Below is a schematic of her living room. If carpet costs $32 per square yard, how much would carpeting her living room cost? 5

23. Below is a graph relating Karl s time and distance jogging. a. How far can Karl jog in one hour? b. How far would you predict he could jog in four hours if he could maintain this rate? c. Is this a proportional relationship? 24. The graph at the right relates the hours Melissa works to her earnings in dollars. a. How much does Melissa make in 0 hours? b. How much does Melissa make in 10 hours? c. How much does Melissa make in a year working 40 hours each week? 6

Level In 2001, Alan Webb broke Jim Ryun s 36- year- old high school mile record by running 1 mile in 3 minutes and seconds. a. How fast is that in feet per minute? b. How fast is that in inches per second? 26. Mandi sold 208 apples at a constant rate over 6 hours. If she continues to sell apples at the same rate, how many apples will she sell in the next 2 hour and 45 minutes? 27. The average adult at rest inhales and exhales something like 7 or 8 liters (about one- fourth of a cubic foot) of air per minute. That totals something like 11,000 liters of air (388 cubic feet) in a day. The air that is inhaled is about 20- percent oxygen (O2), and the air that is exhaled is about 15- percent oxygen (O2), so about 5- percent of the volume of air is consumed in each breath and converted to carbon dioxide. Therefore, a human being uses about 550 liters of pure oxygen (19 cubic feet) per day. If 1- mole of O2 (dioxygen) is 22.4 liters, and the molecular weight of oxygen (O) is grams per mole. About how many grams of oxygen (O2) does an average adult at rest use? How many pounds is this? Level A dentist sees a patient every 20 minutes? He works an average 60 hours per week. How many patients does he see in a year? He takes 3 weeks of vacation. Round your answer down. 7

Mixed Review 29. Paul wants to go home in a taxi. He lives 7 miles away. The taxi firm charges $4 plus $1.50 per miles. a. How much will the fare be? b. Is this a proportional relationship? Why or why not? 30. The profit, in thousands of dollars that a company expects to make from the sale of a new video game is shown in the graph. What is the expected profit before any video games are sold? a. $0 b. - $150 c. - $250 d. - $150,000 8
