5 N u u s b r i e f 3 5 v a n MR G. P a g e 5 Good Day All GMilers, The year is busy winding up towards the end, and in just 50 days it will be Christmas...sheez where has they year gone! It felt like just yesterday we will still filling out forms for registration for Yes we are one year older...meaning us as athletes, but we still good looking...of course runners are very good looking people and if you a green miler even more so. So all the hype is over, this weekend we had the away weekend, as well as the Kaapsehoop 3 in 1 Race. It was my first time running this event, and I must admit I totally underestimated the downhills. I remember running past the 9km mark and thinking is this a mine shaft or a downhill! The build-up to the race was great, arriving at the stadium at around 2 o clock, going up 3 flights of stairs and low and behold I see Neil and Hentie, she at the time was biting her nails (being her first marathon) and looking somewhat excitingly nervous. Neil on the other had was as cool as a Cucumber. (long like one as well), he assured me she will make it, as he trained her very hard the last 9 weeks! I then bumped into some runners from Jeppe club, who told me Kaapsehoop route is great except KM nr 40. I did not care much, as in my mind by that time who cares, all you have to do it put your head down and run. What was also great to see is that everyone was taking photos with the stadium as a backdrop, and I wondered if the Pumas rugby team new how famous this field actually is. (tongue in check) I think the best pick is of Therese jumping in front of the stadium, taken mid air of course! So all collected their numbers the Friday and Chris and Isabel had the tent pitched at the stadium, all was ready for the big day on Saturday. Of course not all could hold the excitement and that prompted Anthonie to "trip" the electricity switch at the lodge. The morning started early, making me think it was the Comrades Marathon. So to the stadium it was at 2:30 in the morning, arriving at the tent with no one in site! so I pitched the gazebo, packed out the chairs and set up the change tent. And almost had a beer..oh but wait there was no cooler yet!! IT WAS EARLY!!!! I made my way to the bus, with fellow runners, and hooked up with Mattie, (who I think was a SANDF kernel in his previous life) with his army type hat and moustache. We got on the bus and made our way to the start. I must also admit, an enclosed bus does not have a good smell, especially if fellow runners "drop" a wind or two. Well I was thinking that some athletes "dropped" more than a wind. We arrived at the start about 1h:30m too early. It was very cold and dark and could hardly see fellow runners. My opinion of the start is somewhat poor, I would have thought more lights could work, a Marque tent maybe for runners to sit and wait in, and maybe some warm tea or coffee would help. Its not like they spending money on route markers (other than guessing what mark is the right one), water points and traffic marshals. Where was I...ahh yes getting cold! So I managed to make out the outlined bodies of other Green Mile Athletes and started to make a huddle to keep warm with them. The closer we sat the warmer it was, but Therese was not cold at all. She had a Poncho on that 2 people could fit under, and she wasn't sharing..lol...we were all literally shaking of the cold. Mattie so much so he needed to use some Vaseline to prevent chaffing...and somewhere in the Vaseline sharing and application thereof, the conversation went all array with comments. If think it had to do with the manner Mattie applied it, with his legs spread VERY far apart, and his hands going in the front and back of his running shorts. I was just hoping after he gave me back my pot of Vaseline, that my lips were not going to be dry later the day!!! As our Green Mile circle got bigger (not because of Vaseline sharing) Pierre and Rupert joined us, Pierre again showed us his calves, but this morning was going to be special as he showed us a glimpse of something resembling a bicep, and making comments that its gun powder. Rupert on the other hand was more interested to go to the toilet and kept telling us he is going to "drop" one in the race. Smitte of course countered Pierre's bicep with his own, and the conversation ended. Belinda and Francis were also chirping away and Francis was wondering is she was getting to hot in her long sleeved shirt. Moneen was taking selfies and photos (maybe for facebook or so) and Snorre was telling us about his "opsie" he had with his car sump! Dorette was "smousing" something to someone I think, and Delmarie was just looking nervous!

6 N u u s b r i e f 3 5 v a n MR G. P a g e 6 While I was sitting there, shivering, admiring this special group of Green Mile runners, it made me think what a special group of people we have in the club, and I am very happy to add to the crazy mix, but in hindsight the best was yet to come on Saturday night!!! The gun went off, and away we went, a beautiful route lay ahead and a not so warm day! everyone mostly ran a PB, and that sub 3 hours still eludes us. A special congratulations to Delmarie, Hantie, Karen, Leandri, who finished the race on their own terms and Like champions! we are super duper proud of all of you. To everyone else who ran PB's congratulations, and it shows hard work pays off. The route although down is not physically easy, as your legs take a pounding and towards the end have nothing left to run anymore. True to the saying 40km broke me down to a walk!! and did so to most of the field, Saturday evening after the race is another story altogether. So to lay rest to the most burning question! Yes the "Jammer Liefie" shirt made its appearance. So did Chris our chairman also make an appearance. This time as a male dancer (with his clothes on we chose). He was dancing in front of everyone, man or woman, thrusting his hips like a young Elvis Presley(with grey hair). He pointed out to me that consuming alcohol while thrusting your hips and keeping eye contact with the person you dance to is always the most important. I must admit the eye contact was scary, because at the time Chris really got going on the hip thrusting he already had "Baygon eyes"one eye for flying(looking up) and one eye for crawling(looking down)!!! I met some new people in our club on Saturday as well, but met him after the dance off with Chris, on a 80"s tune that in my opinion was a slow song...never the less. Michael "Porra" was born, with his gold chain around his neck and dancing to Michael Jackson hits! The more we encouraged his amazing ability not to be in rhythm of music the more his wife begged us to stop. I wonder if we played some Portuguese music if he would have clapped his hands as well. One bonus of a Portuguese guy like Michael in the club, is that we can always get veggies and fruit very cheap. So as the alcoholic beverages freely flowed into the dark night in Nelspruit, Pierre made an attempt to get all the ladies warmed up before going to bed, by pulling out his university days dance moves. At some stage Francis was willing to put R100 notes for Pierre to dance a little longer, and I was wondering how did we get here from a marathon..lol Chris did not give up his hip thrusting moves, and teamed up with Pierre and the Porra to give one last dance, to show his dominance in hip thrusting. Isabel could only smile and wave as this all played down, and she mentioned that she would have a special task for Chris in the morning..to pack the club trailer!!!( sore hip or hangover made no difference) Can someone please ask Chris how much weight he has lost, since his public heartfelt and emotional So the night drew to and end, and I can really say this was a good away weekend. The cold weather could not deter us from having a good time out and also a good run. Wherever you were and you could not make the away weekend, be sure to add it to next year and come and enjoy it with all of us. You don't need to run at all, just come and relax while Chris entertains you!! lol.. A great thank you to all involved in making the weekend as great as it was. Isabel K, Delmarie, Chris, and the whole planning Committee. Please also remember the Tom Jenkins is our club Birthday bash, and we need every person to please attend. There will be no running and mostly walking with a drinks trolley. We have a theme set and please come into contact with Yolanda as she is managing the theme preparations. We also need to defend our tittle for the last two years as the jolliest club. We can only do this with your loyal and continued support. So please keep the date open! Wishing you all a good rest week, and see you for a cooldrink (Chris) at the club on Tuesday. Kind regards MR G

11 N u u s b r i e f 3 5 v a n P a g e 1 1 Janet se Kilimanjaro storie.. I wanted to share a bit of my Kilimanjaro experience with the rest of the GM friends. I am finally back and able to use my legs and looked forward to doing my first post-kili race at Kaapsehoop this last weekend. The trip to Kilimanjaro had me doubting my sanity in more than one instance. From the first day in the rain forest where we were all laughing, joking and taking silly pictures to the day we had to scale the Barranco wall and the reality of what we were attempting finally hit us. After 5 days of 12hr hikes, sub zero temperatures in the evenings and little sleep we finally arrived at summit day. We were woken up at 11:30pm and set off for our destination at 1am. The cold hit us first as we climbed up out of the sheltered Barafu camp and were exposed to the wind, with only our headlamps and guides' feet to show us the way a sense of unreality descends over us. We lose track of time as our camel back pipes freeze at the first water break, the back up bottles are soon out and doing the rounds between those who didn't bring enough insulation. So far we have been lucky with altitude sickness. We wait and wonder if and when this will hit us and whether we will make it to the top despite it. After 2hrs the exhaustion of the past 5 days catches up with one of our group, the layers she wears is cutting of circulation to her hands and anxiety gets the better of her. As the first tears fall and the guides try to calm her down each of us look on with the dawning realisation that our own thoughts will be our worst enemy. After 5hrs of putting one foot in front of the other the sky starts lightening as the sun finally rises high enough to break through the clouds. It perks us up with a brief burst of energy and we stop to enjoy the view over Mawenzi peak. We are halfway to the top. Another 3hrs of hiking and I am on my own, having fallen behind the main group I keep my head down and my feet moving. Dixon the assistant guide is an angel on the toughest section. By now the ground is no longer frozen and the last part to reach the crater rim at Stella point is calf deep gravel that drains every ounce of my strength. The constant internal debate between giving up and taking one more step is unexpectedly interrupted when my hiking pole is taken away and replaced by a hand that accompanies me the last steps up to Stella Point. Having made it this far nothing on this earth short of a broken leg or heart attack will stop me from reaching the highest point. We rest for a while and are ecstatic when the last 2 of our group makes it to Stella Point but are physically unable to continue and are medevaced down the mountain back to camp. The final push. You have made it, you are at the top of Kilimanjaro. Exhiliration overwhelms you. You feel a tear - elation, exhaustion, you don't know why. The tear freezes on your face. You force your brain to think, to pull together the flashing sensations, stinging cold, your bucking breath. You feel alive like never before and you never want to let this moment go. Life whirls around you and in you, and you only want to rest inside this great vortex. Life means more because you made it here. It seems impossible that you did this on your own legs. Yet here you stand, limbs shaking. And if you could do this one impossible thing, then whatever else there may be for you in the world below, at that moment you know that anything is possible for you. Life lessons from the Roof of Africa 1. Sometimes life's greatest competitor is not the person next to you, but the one inside your head. 2. Support is a beautiful thing. Appreciate it when it's given and pass it on when you're able. 3. Strangers can turn into lifelong family. 4. Appreciate the journey, in ALL directions. Sometimes you need to look back to see how far you've come. 5. Water for life. 6. Sometimes it's about more than you. Your dream and goals sometimes makes you look down and not around at those sharing your journey. 7. Appreciate the people who believed in you. Rare are the people who will support your goals, don't forget to thank them for encouraging your dreams. Greetings from Uhuru Peak
