3 AZTEC SEASON OUTLOOK San Diego State enters the 2008 campaign with high hopes and expectations with the return of a veteran group, experienced newcomers and a schedule that plays into its favor. We should have a very strong team this year, assistant coach Jennifer Nanista said. We have a lot of depth, more than we have had in the past. Our freshmen have done their homework over the summer and have come back really fit. I am looking for some exciting things to happen with the depth of the grouping this year. Returning for her senior season is co-captain Kristin Glen. The Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., native was arguably one of the Aztecs most consistent runners in her first year on campus. Glen produced the team s second-fastest time on four different occasions and finished among the squad s top five in all eight meets in which she competed. For the season, she owned SDSU s second-best 6K time, the fourth-fastest 4K and the seventh-best 5K performance. In the spring, Glen enjoyed a solid track and field campaign setting a school record in the indoor 5,000-meter run (18:42.37), a record that had stood since 2004, posting the school s No. 4 all-time effort in the 3,000- meter steeplechase (11:21.16) and running a lifetime best in the outdoor 5K (17:52.71). Her success has carried over into her offseason training as she has returned to campus in the best shape of her life. Kristin Glen has really stepped up, Nanista said. She is one our team captains and worked very hard over the summer. I expect her to lead by example this season and be one of our top runners. Fellow classmate Anne Vieira is also back after a breakout year in A product of San Diego, Vieira is coming off a season in which she established personal records in the 4K, 5K and 6K, while running the first team in all seven races. She joins Glen as one of two co-captains for Another senior, Alyssa Robinson, will also be counted on to produce after contributing early in 2007 before an injury limited her availability toward the end of the year. Following the lead of the seniors will be a talented junior and sophomore group led by two-time letterwinner Stephanie Armstrong and threeyear team member Darien Buc. Armstrong, who has been a solid presence since her freshman campaign, was among SDSU s most consistent runners at any distance. Four times as a sophomore she posted the Aztecs second-fastest performance, including at the Mountain West Conference Championships. She also finished with the team s second-fastest 4K and 5K. Buc, meanwhile, made an immediate impact as a sophomore running with the first team and produced personal records in two of her final three races. She heads into 2008 after coming off a very productive track season in which she was San Diego State s top 1,500-meter runner. Stephanie Armstrong and Darien Buc will be solid for us this year, Nanista said. Both are coming off strong cross country seasons last year and Darien really flourished during the track season in the distance events. Along with aforementioned duo, the return of sophomores Sara Beyers, Michelle Martinez and Andrea Norton, along with redshirt freshman Amy Brown will be vital to the success of the team in The sophomore trio gained valuable experience in their first year on Montezuma Mesa and have been running well in preseason camp, while Brown is looking to make a name for herself after redshirting last year. Perhaps the two athletes who will have the biggest impact on the team are junior newcomers Alma Escobar and Rachel Williams, both of whom come to San Diego State from Concordia University, an NAIA school, in Irvine, Calif. Escobar enters her first year at SDSU after an All-America season that saw her finish in 19th place at the 2007 NAIA national championships. A all-region pick and two-time all-conference selection, Escobar also helped the Eagles to the 2006 combined team national title, the NAIA Region II championship and the conference crown. Williams, meanwhile, competed for Concordia in 2005 and 2006 where she helped the team to the conference title in both seasons. Unlike in recent years, this Aztec squad features depth, an aspect that Nanista believes will set this team up for great things in We should have a very strong team this year, Nanista said. We have a lot of depth, more than we have had in the past. Our freshmen have done their homework over the summer and have come back really fit. I am looking for some exciting things to happen with the depth of the group this year. I believe our success is going to be in our grouping and I think we are going to run very well as a team, which is going to place us much higher in all of our meets, Nanista said. I think if we can improve from our finish last year, both in conference and regionally, I will be very pleased with the season. The aforementioned season includes two meets in San Diego for the first time since 2004 when SDSU played host to three in America s Finest City. After opening the campaign at the Fullerton Season Opener, the Aztecs will play host to the 64th annual Aztec Invitational in Balboa Park before traveling west to Hawaii for the Big Wave Invitational. From that point forward, SDSU will stay in the state of California leading up to the MWC Cross Country Championships, which will be held at Mission Bay. Staying at sea level is something San Diego State will try to use to its advantage in order to have a strong showing in front of the home fans at the conference meet. Following the MWC Championships, SDSU will head to Palo Alto, Calif., home of the NCAA West Regionals. The Scarlet and Black, which will compete at the Stanford Invitational after the Big Wave Invite, hope the familiarity of the course will help them in their preparation to improve upon their showing from a year ago at regionals. With the personnel intact and the schedule ahead of the Aztecs, fans should expect a strong showing out of the Scarlet and Black this year. 4 AZTEC COACHING STAFF Assistant Coach Jennifer Nanista 16th Season at San Diego State San Diego State, B.S. 90, M.S. 97 Jennifer Nanista begins her 16th year as an assistant coach at San Diego State. In the fall, she heads the Aztecs cross country team, while during the track season, Nanista is in charge of the team s middle distance and distance runners. In addition, Nanista is involved with every facet of the Aztec program, including academics, recruiting, fundraising, meet management and all administrative aspects. One of the best middle distance runners to ever wear the scarlet and black, she finished second in the 800 meters at both the 1989 and 1990 Big West Conference championships. She also helped lead the Aztecs to a third-place team finish in Her career-best time of 2:11.83 in the 800 was one of the fastest times in school history. Nanista also competed at Mesa Junior College under former Aztec great Arnie Robinson, before transferring to SDSU. That competitive spirit has carried over to her coaching. For the second straight year, Nanista guided a young team through a 2007 season in which great improvement was made. Despite having just one senior, the Aztecs posted four top-10 finishes, highlighted by a runner-up effort at the Big Wave Invitational in Hawaii. Nanista coached senior team captain Lisa Naucler to SDSU s best time in each of the A team s seven races and an eighth-place performance at the Big Wave Invite. In all, Naucler finished with the Aztecs top 4K, 5K and 6K times and three of the top 10 5K and 6K marks of the season. Following the cross country slate, Nanista was a part of a coaching staff that guided the 2008 SDSU track and field team to its second straight impressive outdoor season. The Scarlet and Black qualified 15 athletes for the NCAA West Regionals, the second-most in school history, and finished in seventh place. Included in that group was all-west Region and all-conference performer Mandy Upuu, a two-time regional qualifier, who made it through the qualifying rounds and advanced to the finals. After the regional meet, San Diego State sent a group of five athletes to the NCAA Championships where it finished in a tie for 31st place, the program s best showing since the 2005 season. During the 2007 outdoor track campaign, Nanista helped Naucler and Upuu qualify for the NCAA West Regionals in the 800-meter run. The pair, who were two of SDSU s school-record 16 qualifiers, were both finalists and earned all-west Region accolades from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Upuu also was a Mountain West all-conference performer in the indoor and outdoor 800 and joined Naucler, Celeste Tyson and Priscilla Chapu to take third place in the distance medley relay at the MWC indoor meet. In 2006, she took a relatively young squad and got them to improve as the season progressed. Evidence in the team s progression can be seen on the season-best times chart as over half of the team s top 5K and 6K times combined were achieved in the last two meets of the regular season. With the help of Nanista, senior Celeste Tyson set a personal best in the 5K and held SDSU s top time in both the 5K and 6K. In addition, Tyson joined Meryl Follosco as the only Aztecs to garner MWC athlete of the week honors. In 2005, she directed SDSU to one of its finest seasons in school history as SDSU made its first-ever appearance in the cross country regional polls. During the breakthrough campaign, the Aztecs captured the Santa Clara Invite and posted a school-best seventh-place finish at the NCAA West Regionals. Under Nanista s tutelage, sophomore Lital Azulay recorded three of the school s top-10 fastest times in the 6K races and became just the second SDSU runner to garner first-team all-conference accolades after finishing fifth at the MWC Cross Country Championships. She also became just the second Aztec to earn MWC Runner of the Week honors twice in the same season and was an NCAA all-west Region selection. After a successful cross country campaign, she coached a pair of juniors, Celeste Tyson and Lisa Crampton, to the 2006 NCAA West Regionals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. During the 2005 outdoor track campaign, she helped junior Nicole Carmier set a personal best in the 800 meters with a time of 2:08.50, which qualified for the NCAA regional meet and ranked fourth on the school s all-time list. In 2004, Nanista tutored junior Christal Cuadra to a 14th-place finish at the MWC Cross Country Championships, an improvement of 28 spots from The 2004 track season, she saw Marie Nilsson post regional qualifying times in the steeplechase and the 5,000 and four school records as the Aztecs climbed to No. 14 in the national rankings. In 2003, she led the SDSU cross country team to another fine season, helping the Aztecs make improvements at both the Mountain West Conference and NCAA regional meets and finishing in the top six in seven of their 10 races. The year was highlighted by the program s first team title in three seasons, as five runners finished in the top 11 at the Long Beach State Invitational. Individually, Nanista coached Nilsson to three of the school s top-four 6K times in 2003, including an SDSU record of 21:04 at the NCAA regional meet. Nilsson was the team s top finisher in every race in which she competed, tallying five, top-seven individual finishes. Nilsson also became the first Aztec to earn MWC Runner of the Week honors twice in a season. She followed that up with a spot on the seven-runner MWC first team by placing fourth, a first in program history, and made the NCAA all-west region squad. During the 2003 track campaign, Nanista helped coach the Aztecs to their first-ever MWC outdoor track and field crown. SDSU ended BYU's streak of 21 consecutive outdoor titles, which was the longest active streak in the nation in the sport of women s track and field. Individually, Nanista guided Jamillah Titus and Jennifer Stakiw to regional qualifying times in the 800. The Aztecs also had a record six student-athletes earn All-America honors at the 2003 NCAA outdoor championships where the team placed 29th overall. San Diego State has shown dramatic improvement in the MWC since 1999, going from eighth to second in a span of only two years at the MWC indoor track and field championship and from fifth to first in just three years at the outdoor meet. In 1999, Nanista coached Sophia Hawker to an NCAA Cross Country Championships qualifying berth, becoming the first Aztec to compete at the national meet in 18 years. Hawker was also a 1999 first-team all-region selection. Nanista is a former member of the Sheffield Elite Track Club. She has won races at the Occidental Invitational, the UC San Diego Invitational and was a runner-up at the Baldy Castillo Invite. Her personal record in the 800 meters currently stands at 2: Nanista s résumé also includes a runner-up finish in the Arturo Barrios 5K Road Race in nearby Chula Vista, Calif. In October 2007, she ran the Nike Women s Half Marathon and set a personal record by completing the course in 1: A native of Golden, Colo., Nanista earned a bachelor of science in financial services in 1990 and in 1997, completed her master s of science in marketing at SDSU. 3 SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY

5 Volunteer Assistant Coach Richard Fox 12th Season at San Diego State San Diego State, B.S. 92; Boston, M.S. 04 AZTEC COACHING STAFF Richard Fox enters his 12th season as an assistant coach at San Diego State. In 1998 when the NCAA implemented the pole vault for women, Fox became a member of the Aztec staff as a volunteer coach. Since then, Fox has brought SDSU to the forefront in collegiate pole-vaulting as one of the nation's premier programs. Few programs can compare to the continued tradition of having multiple athletes provisionally qualifying for the NCAA championships. Fox is proud of the team concept he has built where the pole vaulters combine to outscore their competitors at the MWC championship meets. Teaching solid technique in the art of the pole vault along with building strength through gymnastics, the weight room and conditioning are the Aztecs strong points. Fox has coached every athlete on SDSU s top 10 indoor and outdoor pole vault list. In fall 2007, Fox completed his fifth season as an assistant cross country coach. During this time Fox has worked with three all-mountain West Conference runners, Marie Nilsson and Lital Azulay, who earned first-team all-mwc and all-district honors and Christal Cuadra who earned secondteam all-league. Fox's track and field athletes have posted tremendous success over the past 11 years. SDSU athletes have scored 57 times at conference and the school has had 53 all-conference performances, won 11 Mountain West Conference titles, provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships 40 times and sent 11 to the national meet, with five earning All-America honors. The Aztecs have also broken 11 indoor and 11 outdoor school records and have set both the MWC championship and overall conference records numerous times. At the MWC Championships, Fox helped Shayla Balentine (2005), Erin Asay (2004) and Stephanie Bagan (2007) earn the league s Outstanding Female Performance award at the indoor meet. On an elite and national level, Fox has coached his athletes as they competed at the USA Track and Field Championships a combined 12 times. Two Aztecs have competed at the 2000 Olympic Trials, placing fifth and 12th, while three of his freshman athletes have qualified for the Junior National meet. One collegiate vaulter held the top vault for the 2005 outdoor season. Under Fox, SDSU athletes post one of the strongest indoor and outdoor top-10 lists in America. During his tenure, Fox coached the just the fifth collegiate vaulter to clear the 13-foot barrier and the 14th and 16th collegiate vaulters to clear the 14-foot mark. San Diego State has produced the third-most NCAA All-Americans nationally and has the most individual indoor and outdoor pole vault champions in the MWC. The Aztecs also have the third-most vaulters (six) in the nation to clear 13 feet. SDSU is the top-ranked school in the nation for producing vaulters (three) to clear 14 feet. Prior to joining the Aztec staff, Fox coached the pole vault for one year at Torrey Pines, leading his student-athlete to the school record. Fox was a four-year track and field team member and varsity letterwinner at San Diego State from He is a 1992 graduate of SDSU with a bachelor of science in finance and a postgraduate master s of criminal justice from Boston University.
