ISSUE 4 AUG 2016 Newsletter proudly supported by Finance & Insurance made easy And sponsors PMTC Newsletter Presidents Report HI Everyone, Welcome to August edition of our newsletter. We have successfully completed Race 2 in the Midcoast Windows Duathlon series, having 38 finishers, on what was another cool morning. The results are now available on the website. There have been several members taking part in various races around NSW, including the Dungog Dash and Dawdle, and Coastal Sports and Fitness Trail running series. Great effort people! Page 1 of 9
The final duathlon will be August 28th but don't forget the King of the Mountain race on August 21st. If you re not running, then why not volunteer? Contact CHSLSC for more details. Just to clear up a couple of issues, the following applies: Junior Races Triathlon Children from 10 years can join the club. (These are RTA guidelines). They can compete in junior race triathlon (100mt swim, 2.5km ride, 1.5km run) only Children in high school may compete in adult (short course) distance until competent to compete in adult (long course) Duathlon We have not had children competing in the duathlon series in the past therefore the following will now be implemented. 1. Over 10 years and under high school - may compete in junior races only. 2. High school and above may compete in adult race, if competent. As we have had two duathlon races this year, and some 'supervised' juniors (under high school) on the adult course, they will NOT be permitted to compete in final adult race on 28th August, as it's a long ride, and this is for their safety. They can compete in junior race only. It would be nice if people could stay behind after races both duathlon and triathlon, for a debrief / presentation. We aim to start these fairly soon after the bulk of the field is in, so not to drag it out. This will allow us to cheer the stragglers in too. We appreciate everyone has busy lives, and this is not always possible, but it allows everyone to have a chat and bit of banter. Also give you bragging rights over coffee! Finally, I would like to stress that any negative comments about any previous committees, or past decisions that were made, is not needed and stops the Club moving forward. They were made in the best interests of the Club at the time. If you have anything you wish to contribute or comment on, please forward to the club address portmactriathlonclub@gmail.com and not the personal mailboxes of the committee. Best wishes David Page 2 of 9
Race Calendar The finalised race calendar is annexed at the bottom of the newsletter get the dates in your diary!! Volunteers for race season As always we would like to get the duty roster for the season filled as much as possible before we get to October. Therefore, please can you contact Rachel Sanderson via the club address or via Facebook to arrange your race duty Remember you must complete one graded race as a volunteer to be eligible for Grade Champion at the end of the season Duathlon Race 3 The final Midcoast Windows duathlon of the series will be held on Sunday 28th August at McInherney Park Registration open between 6.30am and 7.00am Race Starts at 7.15am Distances Will be announced on Race Morning Quiz Night As many people may know Isaac Sanderson is going away next year on an educational exchange to Europe, and is holding a quiz night to raise some much needed funds to finance this. Details are: 27 th August 5pm til late Hosted by: Wauchope Bonny Hills SLSC Tickets: $15 per person or $100 for a table of 7 Contact for tickets TA Membership issues Everyone will have had their Club and TA membership expire at the end of June this year. TA offer the option of an automatic renewal, however it appears that this system may not have worked correctly as a number of members report being ed by TA to stating that their payment has not gone through. If this is the case you need to login to the TA membership area and manually renew your membership before your next club race in order to be covered by insurance Club Time Trial vs PMQ Cycle Club The Club has been challenged to a time trial event against Port Macquarie Cycle Club. Before we commit please can we have an expression of interest sent to portmactriathlonclub@gmail.com by members who would like to partake in this. A great opportunity to do something a bit different. 4 Jane & Maddie Wren Wife and daughter of Ashley Wren, wanted to pass on their thanks to the club for our assistance and support a couple of year ago, when Ashley unfortunately passed away in Fiji Ironman 70.3 World Championships We have several club members who qualified and are racing at the 70.3 World Championships in Mooloolaba in a few weeks Alison Appleton Mel Cockshutt Belinda Johnson Marg Lawn Rhona Mckean Kate Pensini Maddi Roberts Brett Weick Good Luck all looking forward to the race reports! CHALLENGE ROTH 17 TH JULY 2016 I didn t intend to race Roth this year. It was always one of those will do at some point races but was never part of this year s plan until a Uni mate from Wales got a spot which happened to coincide with when I was going to be in the UK visiting family, the Mrs going away with her sister (leaving the kids with the grandparents) and Tri Travel having race entry places available; so with the stars aligned I signed up. There were a couple of considerations on top of this, firstly I had already committed to IM Australia 10 weeks prior to Roth and secondly it would mean a solid training block through the colder part of May and all of June. Also I ve never raced outside of Australia or NZ so this was a leap into the unknown, but Roth is alongside Kona for iconic reputation and most desirable Iron distance race globally, not to mention that the world records get set here and Jan Frodeno had put his hand up to have a crack at a new record this year. A few things of note about the venue; Roth is a small country town in the Bavarian region of Germany, its centuries old and evidently wasn t significant enough for the allies to bomb it to pieces in WWII, so it maintains a certain medieval mystique, it s very much in the wilds of the country (as is the whole course), and for some reason is the heart and soul of Iron distance in Europe. Ask any athlete what races they aspire to complete Roth is typically right up there with Kona. Every year this sleepy cobbled street town comes alive for one of the most incredible experiences out there. Anyway, to get to the point, I found myself on race day in transition with nearly 5000 other athletes and the enormity of Roth started to register, not just because of the amount of competitors but also the amount of spectators who came in their ten s of thousands. This place lures you into a sense of false security you start thinking about what a good fast adventure it will be rather than the endurance required. Page 4 of 9
The swim is in a shipping canal and is a one lap loop. Rather than a mass start, it is waves with 15 start groups of 200 (plus teams an hour after that last group has gone). I was in group 14. Its fresh water and because of the whirlpool effect, if you place yourself incorrectly in relation to the bank it can be like fighting a current. Personally I prefer the scenic swim of Port Macquarie and a rolling start, but having thousands of people lining the river bank as you swim is quite an experience and anyway the swim is about 10% of the whole day so no biggy. Onto the bike I was very excited about the bike leg. World records are set here so it had to be fast! The first 10km I was cruising at an average of 40kph and loving every minute, then the hills began, but we re used to hills from Pacific Drive, and Bonny s, not to mention the Lighthouse Beach neighbourhood so surely not an issue? The thing is Port s hills are short and sharp. Roth hills are long and climb consistently, so on each lap there is a category 3 climb of 9.8kms and 3 x category 5 climbs varying between 2km and 5km in length. My fast bike leg quickly became a battle against the territory, my legs were blown by 71km (after the 1 st Solar Hill climb) and a nice headwind picked up through parts of lap 2, but even though it was tougher than anything I ve undertaken on this side of the world, there were highlights that were equally better, namely: Racing the downhills, Tour de France style with switchbacks (with bales of hay on the corners in case of mishap) Burning through small villages at 45-50kph whilst hundreds of local cheer and bang steins of beer around Going up the iconic Solar Hill where a 1.5 meter gap between the crowds is the only road you have to play with Jan Frodeno cruising past on his way to a world record, with a 12 minute gap on the next pro The wonderfully smooth road surfaces that made you feel like you were floating along the course (on the flat parts that is) free from jarring and backache And overall all just being part of the whole event. I got off the bike, slightly concerned about how my legs would hold up in the run my thighs felt like someone had taken a baseball bat to them; and I realised it was going to be a slow marathon, but not one where I could relax. At Roth the cut off is 15 hours; I had a rough idea of how long the combined swim and bike had taken and knew that I shouldn t have a problem, but that pressure of cut off didn t really leave me until I had 14km to go and knew I was going to be ok. Again the run provides different challenges from our local Ironman it s mainly flat, but is also like running a big T shape, where at certain sections you can see how far away you are from the next turnaround, which does mess with your head more than a 4 loop course. The terrain is mainly gravel, which starts out as ok, but after a while I found myself longing for some asphalt. There are scenic parts though (besides running alongside the canal) through forest and small villages where locals will happily share their beer with you (if you let them). Roth allows you to listen to your ipod if you feel so inclined, however the comradery amongst the competitors is as good as any course I ve been on, but with more of an international flavour. From the start I had to adopt a run/walk strategy but on the plus side, my slow pace was consistent across the whole distance. The last section was through the Roth town square and an uphill over the cobbles towards the finish. The locals were fantastic if rather inebriated, and then there was a short lull before entering the finishing arena. Page 5 of 9
10,000 people are all going mad and waving glow sticks whilst fire blasts from numerous towers. Music blares, disco lights and cameras flash. After the trials and tribulations of the day, this is a mind blowing assault on your senses and at first fairly overwhelming. There is a 200 meter carpet around the perimeter of the arena, after the first 10 meters the pain went and I soaked up by far the best finishers reception imaginable. Seriously unbelievable. Crossing the line Belinda Granger presented me with my medal and we had a good 5 minute chat so nice to see a fellow countryman at the end! It wasn t my greatest finish time or my worst, there s a huge part of me that wants to go back to better my time now I know what the course is really like, but sometimes the uniqueness of a solitary experience makes that in itself more valuable. Roth is different in small ways, and big ones too (like logistically) and because of the size of the event, I now feel more nostalgic about our much less commercial Ironman event here at home, I just wish we had road surfaces like those in Roth.
