ISSUE 10 MAR 2017 Newsletter proudly supported by Finance & Insurance made easy And sponsors PMTC Newsletter Hi Everyone, Happy autumn everyone, though I'm not enjoying the dark mornings and finding it really difficult to get up in the dark. Well it's been great to see our members going far and wide this month from 'The Hell of the west' in Goondiwindi QLD, Mooloolaba to the BCU Coffs, and onto our local running festival in Port Macquarie. Haven't much to report but keen to get as many as possible to the team TT with the cycle club on the 26 th March, it should be a good event. Also lookout for the changes to the race calendar and we have changed and added some dates. Page 1 of 5
All those training for Port 70.3 and Ironman keep safe and hope to see you all shortly. Dave Club Race Changes and Additions Owing to the cancellation of the last race due to bad weather and the change of date for Club Champs, the Club Race Calendar has been amended to the following: 19 th March RACE 8 - Camden Haven 26 th March Team Time Trial with Port Cycle Club. 2 nd April RACE 7b - Club Long Run sponsored by Aussie Home Loans. 9 th April RACE 9 - sponsored by Nothcorp Accountants. 23 rd April Race 10 Sponsor To Be Advised Race 8 19 th March - Just a reminder that the next Club Race is The Camden Haven Championship, this is being attended by Forster as a local Club Championship due to a lack of Mid North Coast clubs travelling to Orange for the NSW Club Championships. The race is a 1km swim, 30k ride, and 8km run. As the event will be held at Dunbogan please remember local residents and take care on the roads as there will still be live traffic about. Race schedule: Duty members arrive at 615am Rego opens 6.30am Rego closes 7.15am Race starts 7.30!! Duty Personnel: Race Captain - David Craddock Rego - Jody Marson, Tanya Porto, Hayley Cook Fruit Queen - Laura Cook RTA - Lyn Gentle & Dean Cohen Bike turn around - Ron Wilson Run turn around - Ricky Taylor Spotters - Jason Trevor, Christine Lalor and other people that can help To participate in this race you need to be a TA member. PMTC members race for free and other club members pay a race fee of $20. Presentation Night - will take place on Saturday 13 th May at Town Green Inn. More details to follow in ASAP Page 2 of 5
The club AGM will take place on 6 th June at Westport club at 6pm. Please note that a number of committee members will not be standing for re-election, and of course the club cannot run without the committee, so if you are able to provide your help in running the club please consider taking one of the spots available Tony Wright Cycling accident Many members of the club know local Tony Wright who was involved in an incident with a vehicle whilst riding along Cathie straight on 4 th March. The club will make a donation of $500 in support of his situation and we all wish him a safe and speedy recovery. Professional Status - former junior member Sam Lewis has recently been granted his professional triathlon racing license. We wish Sam well in his future career as a Pro athlete. Ironman Volunteers If you are interested in volunteering at Ironman Australia this year on May 7 th there have been requests for swim leg and run leg volunteers. Swim Leg people should contact Greg Laws on Run Leg people should contact Adam Holborow on Congratulations to all our members who have been racing up and down the coast and achieving some excellent results notably in the BCU Coffs Harbour but also elsewhere. Tweed Heads Enduro (Half Ironaman Distance) Triathlon The only reason I entered the Tweed Heads Enduro event was because a triathlon magazine billed it as the fastest half IM distance course you will do. Promises of a fast point to point swim with the tide in your favour, a flat and fast bike leg and similar for the run, plus a great location seemed the ideal forerunner to IM in May without the price tag or journey of Husskisson Long Course or Geelong That said the lead up was not great, interstate travel for work disrupting training and then a bout of cold and flu in the preceding week had me considering withdrawal on the Thursday before Saturday s race. Nevertheless along we went and cometh the day I felt in reasonable condition. The water was 25 degrees insuring a non-wetsuit swim, but the official at the start line promised us it was a downhill ride; I m not sure what his downhill looks like, but the fastest time of the whole day was 32 minutes for 1.9km and needless to say I think I clocked my slowest ever swim at this distance, although I certainly wasn t alone wen exiting the water. The bike course is a 4 lap affair, basically a dog leg out and back; a southerly wind decided to turn up for the ride which whilst cooling the temperature (which was climbing to a steady 30 degrees) also provided about 40km of headwind over the 90km. On the plus side I could Page 3 of 5
cruise the return journey back to town at over 40kph without too much effort so I was going fairly well right up to the last lap when my body decided to remind me that my flu ailments hadn t fully retreated joints aching and occasional shivers, not to mention a streaming nose had me wondering how I was going to get round 21km on foot, nevermind running it but I have never pulled out of a triathlon and I wasn t about to start, so off the bike in a fairly pleasing time all things considered and onto the run course, which fluctuated between feeling weak and like absolute rubbish to feeling ok for a short spell and then repeat. You know it s not great when fellow competitors ask if you re ok, but when I d explained my strife they were both encouraging, supportive and sympathetic, and I have to say in the years of racing I ve always appreciated what a great community triathlon is for reasons such as this. I crossed the line about 5 minutes faster than my bike split, and for the fastest half ironman distance race in Australia recorded the 2 nd worse time I ve ever done. Still as a wiser and much better athlete than me once said there ll be other races sometimes you just have a bad day. Roll on IM in May!! Special mention to a number of PMTC members out there Marg Lawn for her encouragement when I saw her; Simone Plews for finishing her first race at this distance; Staff for being Staff, and Jim Sanderson for reviving me with a bidon of iced water for my last lap of the run, not to mention the crowd support from Belinda Johnson, Rachel Sanderson et al. PM Joe and Lleyton travelled to Adelaide at the beginning of February for Round 3 of the ITU Youth Series. For both boys this was their first experience of having to pack their bikes for domestic air travel. As you can imagine there was much relief when the bikes arrived intact for the race. The hot weather conditions saw the lake bloom with algae and the swim move to nearby ocean and the introduction of an extra transition as the kids ran from the swim, put on their shoes and run a full km to the bike transition. Every runners dream but not Joe's or Lleytons. Both boys had a good race and Joe finished in the top 10. The next event on the junior calendar was NSW All Schools at Penrith Regatta Centre. The first day was individual racing and Port Macquarie was well represented. Joe Begbie and Ben Heslop both came fourth in their age groups and have been selected in the NSW Triathlon team to compete at the School Sport Australia Championship in the April School Holidays. This was particularly exciting for Ben as he makes his debut at this level. A big congratulations to him. The second day was school teams relays and Port Macquarie was sensational with teams from both St Columba and Mackillop collecting medals. There wasn't another regional town that could match us. It was a show of dominance in Junior, Intermediate and Senior races with the boys from Mackillop claiming 2nd and 3rd NSW (1st and 2nd CCC) in Juniors, 2nd NSW (!st CCC) in Intermediates and 2nd NSW (2nd CCC) in Page 4 of 5
Seniors, whilst the only SCAS boys team came 6th NSW in intermediates (3rd CIS). The future of our club looks strong. Joe then travelled to Perth for the final round of the Australian Youth Championships, hoping to cement his place in the top ten in Australia. Unfortunately things did not go to plan and Joe suffered cramping pain after 5 minutes on the bike. Somehow he managed to finish bent over double for all of the run. Certainly not the race he had hoped for. On the same weekend Boyd competed in the Elite Energy event and placed outright second. Good on you Boyd, this kid can run. We wish Joe and Ben good luck for School Sport Australia and hope to see more of our promising juniors in our club races. Laura If you have competed in a race or event (of any kind) and would like to let us know or even submit a race report, or you have an opinion piece, or photographs or anything that you would like to see featured in the newsletter, don t be shy - correspondence to portmactriathlonclub@gmail.com Page 5 of 5
