2 HEAD COACHES BITS Southern Masters League In the Kent Division of this league, which provides a sporting outlet for all of us wrinklies, our Men have retained their Division 1 status and our Women have regained theirs by winning promotion from Division 2 by leading the table. Well done all of us! There has been a lot of stirring performances from both genders against some very stiff (including the joints) and determined opposition from the competing clubs, but we managed to hold our own. The opposition is getting fiercer as the men are Masters, or Veterans, at 35 now, the same as the ladies. This means that the likes of Paul Hasler are amongst our ranks so I ll have to be careful when I mention wrinklies in future! Mind you, the standard of performance among the younger masters, or smoothies I should perhaps call them, is terrific and it is nice to think that all of us could possibly raise our performances to the same standard. However, along with the term wrinkly often come the terms achy, groany or creaky and often you cannot hear the weak roar of the crowd for the creaking of joints. Mind you, the smell of the Ellerman s Rub with its distinctive aroma of ammonia does keep the nostrils open so there are some benefits. The only thing is the throws and jumps it s difficult enough at the best of times to do High Jump or Long Jump, or throw a Javelin, but what the heck do you do with the Zimmer frame? I think it s absolutely amazing how the hurdlers get over the barriers with them. What a technique! No, I m not taking the P---. This league is a wonderful occasion at every match, because there really are some tremendous athletes competing former internationals for example, who, despite their advancing years are still able to spin three times in the circle (without getting giddy or falling over) and throw a hammer over 45 metres. Those of you who have not been to a Masters League match should come along and watch (or take part) you will be amazed at some of the performances that you will see. You may even be able to help us get out of our chairs to compete. National Junior Athletics League Once again we have maintained our position in the Medway Division of this league by finishing 8 th, in other words bottom. This is purely down to lack of numbers. I don t think I had more than 5 athletes competing in any one match, usually one male and 4 females. However, when we look at the points scored by each of our athletes in any one match, they have averaged a higher aggregate of points per athlete than most of the teams who beat us in each match. We dominated the female throwing events and some of the linear jumps, sometimes scoring maximum points in A & B strings which was excellent. What a pity we never had enough for a relay team again. Many Thanks to the few athletes who turned out for me this year - your efforts have been appreciated. However, next season we should have more athletes eligible to compete. You have to be a minimum of 15 years old and a maximum of 19 to compete in this league and the competition is getting pretty hot. We meet the same 7 teams throughout the season so it s a good indicator of how each athlete compares to their opposition throughout the year. It is also the best league to compete in prior to embarking on competition in the Southern Men s League (SML) because it gives you a good indication of how good you need to be. This is because you are competing at 15, say, against 19 yearolds which some might say is unfair, but just imagine competing at 16 against a 25 year-old with much more experience and strength in the SML. You really ought to look at competing in your own peer group first. In any case you cannot compete as a first year U/17 in the SML. In the Southern Women s League there are separate age groups, but it is still possible for an U/17 to compete against Senior Women, many of whom are very experienced athletes as well. My own views are that all athletes should compete in their own age groups anyway, but that s my personal opinion. So good luck to all of you who will be U/17 s next season. If you want to try out the National Junior Athletics League I ll be handing out letters during the early part of That may well be my last year as Team Manager for this league. Accidents Do Happen How many of you saw the possible horrific accident with a javelin at a Grand Prix athletics meeting earlier this summer? This was a very high level meeting held under IAAF Rules and a Javelin thrower was in the process of warming up with a few throws. At the far end of the arena, along the back straight, but INSIDE the track, was a Long Jump event in progress. One of the competitors there was sitting on a bench provided for them when one of the others heard a warning shout and ducked out of the way. As he did so a javelin hurtled down through the glare of the floodlights and struck the one sitting on the bench in the rib cage, under his armpit. It went into his body by about 10 centimetres, pierced his liver and touched the top of his right kidney. He was rushed to hospital with the javelin stuck in him and has survived. His liver repaired itself and the kidney was undamaged. The point of this little item is that the meeting was being held under IAAF Rules which all UK: Athletics meetings have to abide by this includes League Meetings and Open Meetings as well. With regard to these latter meetings, if the track has linear jumps on the Page 2

3 INSIDE of the track, the timetable has to be rearranged so that a long throw and a linear jump cannot take place at the same time. We all know this from any match at Deangate where the Long & Triple Jumps are alongside the home straight on the inside of the track. The thrower in question, a left handed thrower, obviously got it wrong when he launched the javelin into the air and threw it a very long way, but out of the landing sector. This is precisely why the rules where introduced about locating linear jumps inside the track when building a new facility. That is why alterations were made at Tonbridge track for example, with the old Pole Vault run-up alongside but inside the back straight of the track. In moving it to the lower grass area, the decision was also made to relocate the Long & Triple Jumps to the same area, plus the Shot Putt sector. Other existing tracks have had to do similar alterations, but some, Deangate included, do not have the space to do so between the perimeter rails and the track. When we get our track the Long & Triple Jumps will be outside the track as will the Pole Vault. Since the incident there have been no recriminations in the press and no information about an enquiry into what went wrong, or what they IAAF are going to do about it. Once again the UK abides by the rules and the rest of Europe appears to get away with breaking or bending them. The main thing is, how did the meeting organiser get permission to hold a IAAF Grand Prix Meeting in a stadium where the field event layout did not comply with the IAAF s own regulations? Perhaps money talks! Star:Track 2007 Well that s the 16 th Star:Track week over. This year we played host to 135 young people aged between 5 and 14. There was some good talent on display again this year with one young 9 year-old girl showing a natural ability to do Shot Putt, some sprinters and a few potential Javelin Throwers too. We did try to beat Paula Radcliffe s 3000metre time of 8m 29.27s doing the Paula s Challenge which consists of a relay team of 9 runners doing 50metre stages continuously until the 3000metres were complete. The best time was 8m 42 seconds a remarkable time considering we had many 9 year-olds running. To be just 15 seconds outside the time was a very good effort all round. We were so lucky with the weather the rain held off each day, especially Tuesday 7 th when it really tipped down in the evening, having been threatening to pour all day, but didn t. The good news is that everybody had a good time, there were no serious injuries just the odd bruise from falling over and hurt pride. The bad news is that they all want to come back next year! so look out folks, I ll be asking for your help again. Many thanks to all the coaches and helpers who gave their time and efforts during the week. Without all of you I couldn t hope to organise it, so if you say you can t help next year I won t have to take a week off work to run it! Many Thanks Mascalls Artificial Pitch Mascalls School have secured funding via the Lottery and other sources for their much-publicised all-weather pitch on the school field. So far so good until one morning during Star:Track Week a couple of blokes with surveying equipment started measuring the field around the first bend of the track. When challenged by Janet it transpired they had the plans for the location of the artificial pitch with them and guess what? It will take all three jump pits, the Throwing Cage area (and the cage), the Shot Putt area, plus the first bend of the track, 90% of the best soccer pitch and part of the cricket pitch. They had no idea what was intended regarding any location of the athletics facilities that your club helped install and improve at its own expense. The school paid nothing towards the cage which will cost about 8000 to replace, and your club paid for and carried out the work to improve the 3 pits from about 1.5m x 3.5m dimensions to the current 3m x 9m ones plus the tarmac run-ups. We also paid fro the Shot Putt circle and sector. Isn t the consultation business wonderful? The school management have some answering to do, that s for sure. We haven t moved to Putlands yet. Athlete Registration You may be unaware, but all athletes who compete for their clubs have to be registered with UK:Athletics, or they may become ineligible to compete in Championship events. This also applies to athletes who do not belong to a club for whatever reason, this means your club has to pay a levy to UK:A on your behalf. This is on top of any affiliation fees we pay already to become a registered club. The whole country is in some turmoil over this because a lot of clubs are relatively small and have a very low membership fee, therefore they will not have sufficient funds to pay the athlete registration fees as well as any affiliation fee to SEAA or UK:A South East Region. Many clubs are up in arms over this because they see it as just another big stick being waved at the clubs to bring them into line over certain elements within the athletics modernisation scheme imposed on us by the Hutton Report which had to be accepted before the mythical 42 million pound Legacy was released to UK:A in order to provide much-needed funds for improved facilities and so on. I subscribe to this feeling somewhat, because once again the funds have gone not to those most in need, the grass roots of athletics like us, it went to the bigger clubs in order to improve their facilities while the rest of us saw Page 3

4 nothing coming to us at all. Athlete registration has been accepted without question by North of England AA & Midlands AA where there are fewer clubs but perhaps a comparable number of athletes. In the South of England there are more clubs with mostly fewer members per club. Indeed there is another new club in Kent that has affiliated to KCAA making around 44 registered athletics clubs in Kent alone. All of these already pay an affiliation fee to the Regional association but must now also pay another fee for every competing athlete. There is one club not far from us that has paid no affiliation fees to any body this season, be it county or league, yet their athletes have competed against us in the Southern Men s League, their points have been amassed and the team has been recorded as finishing 3 places below us in the league. This is not the first time they have not paid affiliation fees and probably won t be the last. Perhaps one good thing will come out of the Athlete Registration scheme if their athletes are not registered they cannot compete. How many others will fall foul of this scheme? Be thankful that your Club s Committee have been thoughtful enough to register all you track & field athletes from Club funds. Athletics Tracks in Kent Kent has a growing number of athletics tracks with more being planned. This is good you may think. But just take a moment or three to work out where the tracks are located. The list below may help: Canterbury High School Julie Rose, Ashford Tonbridge School Sutcliffe Park, Eltham Central Park, Dartford Norman Park, Bromley Catford Deangate, Hoo Erith Stadium (East Kent) (East Kent)) (West Kent) (London Borough) (North Kent) (London Borough) (London Borough) (North West Kent) (London Borough) There are more planned one at a school in Thanet, one at Sutton Valence School, one at Gravesend/Gillingham and one at Paddock Wood. Of the list above there is just one track in West Kent - Tonbridge School. Again, of the above list there are very few PUBLIC Tracks, i.e. open for the public and individuals to use (for a fee). These are Canterbury, Ashford, Bromley, Dartford, Eltham, Deangate. The list shows 4 tracks in London Boroughs, which really ought not to be counted in Kent, but are historically part of Kent. The Track at Sutton Valence School is going to be 8 lanes and Medway & Maidstone will use it as a training base. The school have 360,000 to put into the cost. The track in Gravesend/Gillingham will be 6 lanes and will be constructed at the Black Lion Leisure Centre and will replace Deangate, which is to close due to restrictions over development. Again, Medway & Maidstone will base themselves here so they will have two tracks at their disposal, Greedy, perhaps, but good luck to them if they can get the funding. That leaves NO public track in West Kent, because an individual is not able, as far as I know, to hire Tonbridge School track, even though a considerable amount of public money has been ploughed into it over the years, as well as a considerable amount from the school s foundation. The point of all this is that we also want Funding for our facility which is looking extremely low standard compared to what the others are getting. With the Olympics being hosted in London in 5 years time should we not have a proper facility and should we not be lobbying the UK:Athletics Facilities Group to give us what we ought to have a 6 lane track for public use? A Blast from the Past This may become an irregular feature within the Stop Watch Times. The other day Janet was turning out some papers and came across a lot of results from way back when the club was a mere fledgling in the athletics world. In those days we were not competing in any leagues. We competed in Open Meetings and Fun Runs and Road Races, plus Open Cross Country Meetings. The very first thing we competed in was, I think the Horsham Blue Star Harriers Open Parkland Races, held in Horsham Park. We took a coach load over with possibly more spectators than runners, but as I remember we all had a good time in my old home town. I do have the results of this meeting somewhere, but can t lay my hands on it at the moment. There are some names in the results of competitors who are still members and some who we may have forgotten ever belonged to our club. I wonder where they are now? Anyway, I though it might be a good idea to put a few of the results in from time to time just so we can compare times and distances from then with what we can show the world now. They may not be in any particular order but I will try to start with the earliest ones and gradually build up to the present day, although of course the present day results will be history by the time I get round to putting them in the SWT! So here goes: The earliest results I can find so far are for the Mascalls Fun Run on March 27 th 1988 and although a lot of those listed were actually running for Mascalls School they were still members of PWAC. Mick Duffin THE 2008 FLORA LONDON MARATHON - SUNDAY 13th APRIL How to Get an Entry The first requirement to get an entry for this event is to be completely mad!! Anyone who should want to run 26.2 miles around the streets of London, and to train for three or four months in all weathers that the British winter throws at you; well you must be totally without any marbles at all. HOWEVER! If you are a Member of PWAC and are determined to be there, do it, get the medal, and the T-shirt and maybe even the video; this is how to do it. First you must obtain an official entry form. These are available at good sports shops e.g. Christopher Hull, or the Angel Centre in Tonbridge; or branches of Sweatshop, JJB Sports, JD Sports, and Hargreaves Sports. If you have difficulty in getting one of these forms you can ring the London Marathon Help Line on Having now got a form you must fill it in following the instructions to the letter, and then post it. Entries must be in by the due date on the entry form, as the ballot closes towards the end of October. Sometime in early December you will be notified by post whether you have been successful, or have been rejected. If you are a reject don t give up hope, because PWAC receives a number of guaranteed entries. These are given as we are an affiliated Club, and because many Club members and friends help on the day of the Marathon, now at the 22 mile Water Station. These guaranteed entries are then available to any Club Member who has sent an entry and been rejected, and are given on the basis that they are offered first to people who have not run the London Marathon before, then to people who have run before but not used a club entry; Page 5

6 and finally, to anyone who wants one if there are any left. Alan Newman Don t give up training if you receive a rejection slip; let me know as soon as you get it, and if you want a guaranteed entry, I normally distribute these at about Christmas time. I hope this clarifies the situation about entry to the London Marathon. Please let me know if you have or are going to enter so that I can keep track of who is in and who isn t. If you need any more information about this, contact me by calling me at home on , or mobile on , or by at petercockcroft@btinternet.com. For those of you who are not running, remember the date 13th April, as you will all be needed to help at the 22 Mile Water Station. More details nearer the time. Peter Cockcroft PADDOCK WOOD AC SUMMER TIME TRIALS Throughout the summer, Paddock Wood athletes have been testing their fitness in a series of time trials over 800m or the classic mile, with a mile handicap race concluding the season at Tonbridge School track on Wednesday evening, August 29, writes Alan Newman. A total of 35 athletes have taken part in the series and 18 ran in the final handicap race with eight setting personal best times for the distance. First runner across the finishing line was Richard Christian who stopped the clock at 8.25 for a true 5.56 time closely followed by first woman, Alison White (8.30 / 7.17) and both were suitably rewarded for their pb s at the prize giving. Fastest athlete on the night, as he has been all summer, was James Ridger (4.35) and the fastest lady was Sarah Shepherd (6.00) who claimed the prize for the best performance with her 5.51 recorded in July. Two further prizes were awarded for improvement from 2006 and these went to Fiona Buckingham (6.18) for slicing 28 seconds off her previous best in July and to Kady Cartwright (5.59) for improving by 24 seconds also in July. The other personal bests set with the incentive of the handicap were achieved by Paul Hasler (4.43), Des White (5.30), Tom Cox (5.34), John Tolhurst (5.55) and Claire McDonald (6.35) who equalled her previous best mark.
