Set up the 4 different events Copyright in different Ann areas Moran of the field/school grounds. The Beanbag Throw should be set up by placing the starting line on the grass, before a

2 long open space for throwing into. The 1 Minute Sprint should be set up by placing the starting line on the ground, before a long open space for sprinting into. The Long Jump should be set up by placing the starting line on the grass, before a long open space for jumping into. The 1km Mini-marathon track should be set up by measuring laps around the school yard with a trundle wheel. Starting and finishing lines should be placed on the ground as markers and a sign showing the amount of laps necessary to complete the full 1km distance should be made using the A4 page and felt-tip marker and displayed by the starting line. 4. Split the class into 3 equal-sized teams of red, blue and yellow. 5. Give every member of the red team a red sticker to wear, give every member of the blue team a blue sticker to wear and give every member of the yellow team a yellow sticker to wear. 6. When all of the children are wearing their teams coloured stickers, divide the class into 4 groups of mixed colours. Each group should have approximately the same amount of children from each team. 7. Give each group a clipboard containing one of each of the 4 different events Results Sheets, a pen, a ruler, a meter stick, a trundle wheel and a stopwatch. 8. Send each group, with their equipment, to a different activity s starting point, ready to begin. How to Conduct Each Event: The Beanbag Throw The first competitor in the group fills in his/her name and team colour on the Beanbag Throw Result Sheet. He/She then takes the beanbag and either stands at, or runs up to, the starting line and throws the beanbag as far as he/she can. Another member of the group places the lollipop stick in the ground where the beanbag landed to mark the spot and the rest of the group use their various measuring tools to measure the length of the throw. The length of the throw is then filled in on the results sheet beside the thrower s name and team colour. The next competitor then takes his/her turn. When every member of the group has taken his/her turn and all results have been recorded, the group as a whole move onto the next event area, as soon as it becomes available. The 1 Minute Sprint The first competitor in the group fills in his/her name and team colour on the 1 Minute Sprint Result Sheet. He/She then takes up his/her position at the starting line while another member of the group prepares to start the timer on the stopwatch. The group member with the stopwatch blows the starting whistle and starts the 60 seconds on the clock. The runner sprints as far as he/she can until he/she hears the whistle to mark the end of the minute. Another member of the group places the marker into the ground at the point where the runner was when the whistle was blown. The rest of the group use their various measuring tools to measure the distance of the run. The distance is then filled in on the results sheet beside the runner s name and team colour. The next competitor then takes his/her turn. When every member of the group has taken his/her turn and all results have been recorded, the group as a whole move onto the next event area, as soon as it becomes available. The Long Jump The first competitor in the group Copyright fills in his/her Ann name Moran and team colour on the Long Jump

3 Result Sheet. He/She then takes a run up to the starting line and jumps as far as he/she can. Another member of the group places the lollipop stick in the ground at the point where the first part of the jumper s body first touched the ground. The rest of the group use their various measuring tools to measure the length of the jump. The length of the jump is then filled in on the results sheet beside the jumper s name and team colour. The next competitor then takes his/her turn. When every member of the group has taken his/her turn and all results have been recorded, the group as a whole move onto the next event area, as soon as it becomes available. The 1km Mini-marathon For this event all members of the group start at the same time and run around the 1km circuit (taking note of the sign showing the amount of laps necessary to complete the full 1km). The children should remember to pace themselves, as this event is a marathon and not a sprint. As each competitor arrives at the finishing line he/she fills in his/her name, team colour and finishing position on the results sheet. When every member of the group has crossed the finishing line and all finishing positions have been recorded, the group as a whole move onto the next event area, as soon as it becomes available. Start Playing: 1. Each group starts at a different event area. The children compete in each event according to the instructions above. 2. When all of the children have competed in every event, the results sheets are handed back to the teacher to calculate the overall results. 3. The children gather together in their original teams of red, blue and yellow to wait for the overall results from their teacher. 4. The teacher adds together the results for each team for each event using a calculator and fills in the Overall Results Sheet. For example, to find out the red team s total beanbag throw distance, the teacher adds together the lengths of each throw made by every member of the red team and writes it into the relevant section on the Overall Results Sheet. 5. The teacher then announces the winning teams for each of the 4 events.
