Facility: Dempsey Indoor Facility Watch: FloTrack.org Results: TBA DUCKS SET TO OPEN 2018 INDOOR SEASON AT UW PREVIEW EUGENE, Ore. The Men and Women of Oregon will open the 2018 indoor track and field season this Saturday, January 13, at the UW Preview in Seattle. Less than a week after the student-athletes arrived back on campus to begin the winter term, the UW Preview will serve as a rust-buster for the Ducks as they transition back into competition form. Lots of old faces and lots of newcomers making their debuts this weekend, said head coach Robert Johnson, so we re excited about that because we have no idea what they re going to do. We re going to go up there and just try to shake some of the rust off. Many of Oregon s student-athletes will compete in events they will not necessarily specialize in throughout the season, like triple jumper Chaquinn Cook in the 60 meters, but those are good opportunities to ease into the season without much pressure. If you look at the entries for this meet, our kids have a lot of different options, said Johnson, There s some events we don t usually run like the 1,000 and the 600. In a low-key meet like this, it will be awesome for them to go up there and build up some confidence. HOW TO FOLLOW: The UW Preview will be streamed live on FloTrack.org with a premium subscription, and a link to live results will be available on the track and field schedule on GoDucks.com. Updates will be provided during the meet on Twitter MEN S 2018 OUTLOOK: The production that 17-time NCAA champion Edward Cheserek provided over the last four years is irreplaceable, as Johnson puts it, but the Men of Oregon have a deep, young roster in 2018 and will try to make up for those points in other areas. The Ducks also lose Kyree King, the 2017 Pac-12 champion in the 100 and 200 meters, but a good crop of returners and an exciting influx of new talent will make the UO men a team to watch throughout Senior middle-distance runners Sam Prakel and Blake Haney will be counted on for leadership as much as production, and other returners like sophomore hurdler Braxton Canady, third-year sprinter Cameron Stone and redshirt sophomore distance runner Tanner Anderson will be expected to step up for the Ducks in Sprinter Julius Shellmire is also back and is looking to carve out more of an individual role for the Ducks, and young throwers Sebastian Barajas and Max Lydum will try to step up after losing a lot of leadership in that group. The Men of Oregon will have a lot of new faces in 2018, with an exciting mix of freshmen and transfers joining the squad. Freshman Joseph Anderson should prove to be a dynamic addition in the hurdles, he took bronze for Team USA in the 110 hurdles at last summer s Pan American Championships, and rookie distance runners Cooper Teare and Reed Brown will be fun to watch on the track after terrific collegiate debuts during the cross country season. Among transfers, sprinter Cravon Gillespie will be intriguing to watch after coming over from Mt. SAC, as his 200 and 100 meter personal-bests would rank first and fourth in UO history, respectively. Spenser Schmidt and Tristan James could both make an impact in the jumps right away after transfering to UO, and miler James West was a big-time transfer from England and will look to translate his international success onto the track for the Ducks. WOMEN S 2018 OUTLOOK: The Women of Oregon are coming off the greatest season any women s collegiate program has ever enjoyed, having completed the historic Triple Crown by sweeping the cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field NCAA team titles in the same academic year. Like the men, the UO women lose quite a bit of talent from last year s squad, notably 2017 Bowerman winner Raevyn Rogers and 2016 Olympian Deajah Stevens, but there is still a ton of talent returning and the Ducks have restocked in a lot of areas with dynamic freshmen and transfers with a lot of past success. Star sprinters Ariana Washington and Hannah Cunliffe are back to anchor the Women of Oregon in Both captured NCAA indoor titles last year, and both will be watched closely on the national stage throughout the year. Sophomore Katie Rainsberger has already established herself as a star in the distance events, contributing to all three phases of the Triple Crown as a freshman last year, and she is joined by Alli Cash, Lilli Burdon and Jessica Hull, among others, to make up a deep and talented distance group. In the jumps, the Women of Oregon return the defending Pac-12 champions in both the long jump (Rhesa Foster) and the triple jump (Chaquinn Cook), and Alaysha Johnson is also back as the defending Pac-12 champion in the 100 hurdles. Sophomore Makenzie Dunmore will be another name to watch in the sprints after a very productive freshman year, and Brooke Feldmeier will be counted on in the 800 with the loss of Rogers after a kicking to a thirdplace NCAA finish outdoors last year. Throwers Ronna Stone, Kiana Phelps and Maddie Rabing all had solid years last year and will now look to make more of an impact on the national scale for the Ducks. There is a ton of exciting new talent in 2018 for the UO women. Shae Anderson and Lauren Rain Williams are both highly-touted freshmen in the sprints, and Anderson should also make an immediate impact in the hurdles. Kaylah Robinson is another big addition in the hurdles as a freshman. The Women of Oregon also added a lot of talent by way of transfer, with middle-distance runners Sabrina Southerland (Georgetown), Amanda Gehrich (Utah) and Ruby Stauber (LSU) coming over to help Feldmeier replace the production lost from Rogers departure. Briyahna DesRosiers (Texas A&M) and Venessa and Kerissa D Arpino (Oregon State) will be added to the Ducks already loaded sprinting group, and returners like Ashlyn Hare (jumps) and Alexis Rigmaiden (javelin) will be new faces to watch for Duck fans after sitting out last season. UP NEXT: After opening the season at the UW Preview, the Men and Women of Oregon will take a week of rest before sending a large contingent to New York for the Columbia Challenge (Jan ) at the historic Armory Track and Field Center. 1

4 4 WHO TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND WHO TO WATCH: Three-time NCAA champion and eight-time all-american Ariana Washington was named to the preseason watch list for The Bowerman after winning the indoor 200-meter title and playing a crucial role in the Triple Crown run last season. UO WOMEN COMING OFF HISTORIC TRIPLE CROWN: The Women of Oregon will look to build off last year s magical season in 2018 after becoming the first NCAA DI women s program ever to complete the Triple Crown with national titles in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field in the same academic year. The UO women began the historic run with a thrilling one-point win in the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Championships, and then dominated at the NCAA Indoor Championships for their seventh indoor title in the last eight years with a meet-record 84 points. With history on the line, the Ducks pulled out a narrow victory over Georgia at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, with the 4x400 relay team running a collegiate record 3:23.13 to pull out a musthave victory in the final event and complete the Triple Crown. WASHINGTON NAMED TO BOWERMAN WATCH LIST: Senior sprinter Ariana Washington, a three-time NCAA champion and eight-time all-american for the Ducks, was named to the preseason watch list for The Bowerman, the most prestigious award in collegiate track and field. Washington played a major part in last year s Triple Crown run for the Women of Oregon, winning the NCAA Indoor 200 meter title while also scoring indoors in the 60 meters as well as outdoors in both the 100 and 200 meters. Fellow sprinter Hannah Cunliffe also received votes for the Bowerman preseason watch list after appearing on the list multiple times last season. LOTS OF NEW FACES IN 2018: There will be a lot of new faces for Duck fans to learn in 2018, as more than 30 newcomers have joined the Men and Women of Oregon. That is nearly triple the usual amount of new faces the Ducks welcome each year. Some of the notable newcomers by way of transfer include sprinters Cravon Gillespie (Mt. SAC) and Briyahna DesRosiers (Texas A&M), jumpers Tristan James (LCC) and Spenser Schmidt (PSU) and middle distance runners Sabrina Southerland (Georgetown), Amanda Gehrich (Utah) and Ruby Stauber (LSU). Oregon also brought in an abundance of talented freshmen, including hurdlers Joseph Anderson and Kaylah Robinson, sprinters Shae Anderson, Jasmin Reed, Lauren Rain Williams and Rocky Rainey, distance runners Cooper Teare and Reed Brown and throwers Jared Briere and Austin Glynn. DUCKS TASKED WITH REPLACING ELITE TALENT: Oregon will have to find ways to replace the production of a few all-time greats in time Edward Cheserek is now a professional, finishing his career with the most NCAA titles of anybody ever in the sport and the most of any male athlete in the history of NCAA athletics. The Ducks also lose 2017 Bowerman winner and six-time NCAA champion Raevyn Rogers and 2016 Olympian Deajah Stevens to the professional ranks, along with last year s NCAA 60-meter hurdle champion Sasha Wallace, 100 and 200-meter Pac-12 champion Kyree King and the top two Pac-12 finishers in the decathlon, Mitch Modin and Joe Delgado, among others. MEET NOTES RANKINGS: After last season s historic Triple Crown run, the Women of Oregon enter the 2018 season ranked No. 1 in the nation. The Men of Oregon enter the year at No CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW: The Men and Women of Oregon each put together solid cross country seasons during the fall, with the women finishing fifth at the NCAA Championships and the men running their best race of the year to place sixth. Katie Rainsberger continued to establish herself as a budding star with a stellar season, which she began by shattering the Springfield Golf Club course record. Lilli Burdon showed she can be UO s consistent No. 2 runner while joining Rainsberger on the all-pac-12 first-team, and Carmela Cardama Baez proved to be a big contributor after transfering from Florida State by earning second-team all-pac-12 honors. The Men of Oregon enjoyed a a great rookie season from freshman Cooper Teare, who finished eighth at the Pac-12 Championships to earn Pac-12 freshman of the year honors. Tanner Anderson also had a good year to build off last season s breakout performance on the track, leading the Ducks at the NCAA Championships in 41st overall with Teare just three spots behind. JOHNSON RANKS AMONG ALL-TIME GREAT COACHES: In just his sixth year as the Ducks head coach, Robert Johnson has already led Oregon to 13 team NCAA championships, placing him fourth on the NCAA all-time list. Only John McDonell (42), Pat Henry (35) and Ted Banks (17) have led cross country or track and field teams to more titles. Under Johnson, the Ducks have won two NCAA championships in women s cross country, four in women s indoor track and field, three in men s indoor track and field, two in women s outdoor track and field and two in men s outdoor track and field. Additionally, Johnson led the Women of Oregon to the the historic Triple Crown in Johnson has also guided his student-athletes to 48 individual national championships. ROGERS WINS 2017 BOWERMAN AWARD: In December 2017, six-time NCAA champion and eight-time all- American Raevyn Rogers became the third Woman of Oregon in the last four years to take home The Bowerman, collegiate track and field s highest honor. Rogers earned the honor after a stellar junior season in which she swept the indoor and outdoor 800 meter NCAA titles, giving her five straight at that distance, while also anchoring the Ducks in the thrilling 4x400 relay to win the Triple Crown. Rogers is the fifth UO athlete to ever win The Bowerman - joining Galen Rupp, Ashton Eaton, Laura Roesler and Jenna Prandini - the most of any team in the nation. Following the 2017 season, Rogers announced she would forego her senior season to turn professional. PRAKEL NAMED PAC-12 SCHOLAR ATHLETE FOR XC: Redshirt senior Sam Prakel continued his stellar academic career during the cross country season in the fall, winning the honor of Pac-12 men s scholar athlete of the year. The 2016 Elite 90 Award winner for indoor track and field, Prakel is a five-time Pac-12 first-team allacademic selection and a 2016 first-team academic all- America recipient while majoring in biochemistry. Trailing Georgia by 8.2 points with only the 4x400 relay remaining, the Ducks ran a collegiate record 3:23.13 to win the relay, secure the NCAA championship and become the first women s team in NCAA D-I history to complete the Triple Crown. In addition to the dramatic outdoor win, the Ducks pulled out a one-point victory at the NCAA Cross Country Championships for the first jewel of the Triple Crown, and set the stage for the dramatics in Eugene with a record-setting performance at the NCAA Indoor Championships, scoring a meet-record 84 points. Johnson also led the Men and Women of Oregon to their ninth straight sweep of the Pac-12 team titles in 2017, guiding both teams to blowout victories at Hayward Field. As a result, Johnson was named the 2017 Pac-12 coach of the year on both the men s and the women s side. Throughout the 2017 season, the Women of Oregon broke seven collegiate records (DMR(i), 60m (i), 4x100m, 4x200m, Sprint Medley Relay, 800m, 4x400m), and finished the season with at least a share of six of those records still intact. In the summer of 2017, Johnson helped guide four athletes to berths to the IAAF World Championships at the U.S. Outdoor Championships, including a U.S. title in the 200 meters by Deajah Stevens. Johnson is one of only two coaches all-time to earn a career women s triple crown national titles in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. The other coach to accomplish that is Texas legend Terry Crawford. With a national title in men s cross country, Johnson would become the only coach in NCAA history with career triple crowns for both the men and women. Under Johnson s guidance, Oregon has been honored as the national Women s Program of the Year for each of the nine years of the award s existence, while the men s program has earned the honor five times, including three straight from After a tremendously successful run as associate coach, Robert Johnson was elevated to head coach of the Oregon track and field and cross country programs in the summer of He is in his 12th season overall with the Ducks. His leadership was evident immediately upon taking the helm of the most storied programs in collegiate track and field. The Ducks followed that performance with their fourth straight women s national indoor title in Johnson then oversaw Oregon s men s and women s sweep of the Pac-12 Championships, before guiding both teams to trophy finishes at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships. In his second year as head coach, Johnson guided the Men and Women of Oregon to a sweep of the NCAA Indoor National Championships. His women became just the second team in meet history to win five consecutive NCAA indoor crowns while the men claimed their first title since Both teams followed-up with their sixth straight sweep of the Pac-12 Championships. A month later at Hayward Field the men, fueled by four individual champions, claimed their first NCAA outdoor title since 1984 by setting a meet-record 88 points and the largest margin of victory in 20 years. Year three of the Johnson era saw three national championships as the men defended their indoor and outdoor titles. The outdoor title came by 29 points, the largest margin of victory at the NCAA Championships in 21 years. The Ducks then added the crown jewel of year three when the women collected points across the board to win Oregon s first outdoor national championship in 30 years. The Ducks also added to their Pac-12 dominance with a sweep of the men s and women s track and field championships, while also claiming the 2014 women s cross country title. In , Johnson led the Ducks to a sweep of the indoor championships as the Men of

In all, Johnson coached 22 conference champions and 70 All-Americans at Oregon before becoming the head coach. Before arriving at Oregon in 2005, Johnson oversaw UCLA s highly-regarded high jump, long jump and triple jump units, and also coordinated its strength and conditioning program. In two years with the Bruins, his men and women combined for one NCAA title, one U.S. runner-up finish, two Pac-10 titles, and eight All-America honors. His star pupils included collegiate triple jump record holder Candice Baucham, the 2005 NCAA outdoor champion and U.S. runner-up, as well as 2004 Pac-10 champion and Olympic Trials triple jump qualifier Juaune Armon.
